Meet Charizard

Everything you need to know about the Flame Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Meet Charizard, the Flame Pokémon: a towering orange dragon with a cream belly, two great wings lined in blue-green and a fire roaring at the tip of its tail. It is the final form of Charmander, evolving from Charmeleon at level 36 – and the moment it does, it gains the Flying type and finally takes to the skies.

Its fire is bad news for anything made of stone or ice. Charizard's breath can melt boulders and even glaciers weighing 10,000 tons, and a careless blast has been known to start a forest fire. The tail flame doubles as a mood meter: it surges when Charizard lets rip with a big attack and flares a whitish blue when it is furious. Experience stokes it too – the more hard-fought battles a Charizard survives, the hotter its fire burns – and those wings can lift it to around 1,400 metres.

“Its wings can carry this Pokémon close to an altitude of 4,600 feet. It blows out fire at very high temperatures.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed, Y, Shield & Legends: Z-A · 1996

For all that firepower, Charizard lives by a code. It roams the skies in search of strong opponents, yet it never turns its flames on anyone weaker than itself; only a feeble Charizard feels the need to show off. Wild ones make their homes among mountains, valleys and even volcanoes, where families live together with Charmander. It can swim, its tail fire somehow staying lit, and it is so sure of its strength that it dozes off in a famously relaxed sprawl. In Alola, locals ride Charizard to fly between the islands and make deliveries.

Charizard has been there from the very start. It was the fully grown form of one of Professor Oak's three first partners in Pokémon Red and Green in 1996, the fiery face on the Pokémon Red box, and the star of FireRed's in 2004. X and Y gave it not one but two Mega Evolutions – the black, blue-flamed Fire/Dragon Mega Charizard X and the sleek, sun-summoning Mega Charizard Y – and Sword and Shield went bigger still with a Gigantamax form whose wings are made of pure fire.

Few Pokémon inspire such devotion. Red, Blue, Lance and Leon have all battled with one, and Ash's headstrong Charizard taught a generation of viewers that loyalty has to be earned. In The Pokémon Company's 2020 Pokémon of the Year poll it was voted the most popular Generation I Pokémon, its Base Set card is the hobby's most famous treasure – and its own designer, Atsuko Nishida, calls it her favourite.

How big is Charizard?

Charizard silhouette
Charizard1.7 m (5′07″)

At 1.7 m (5′07″) Charizard can look a tall adult in the eye, and at 90.5 kg (199.5 lb) it weighs about as much as a heavyweight boxer – Mega Charizard X bulks up by another 20 kilos, while Gigantamax Charizard soars past 28 m, roughly the height of a nine-storey building.

Total534

Base stats have never changed: 78/84/78/109/85/100, a total of 534 – exactly the same spread as Typhlosion's. In Generation I Charizard had a single Special stat of 85; when Gold and Silver split Special in two, Sp. Atk jumped to 109 while Sp. Def stayed at 85, so it came out of the change a much stronger special attacker. Both Mega Evolutions add 100 points (634 in total) but spend them very differently: Mega Charizard X goes 78/130/111/130/85/100, piling on Attack and Defense, while Mega Charizard Y goes 78/104/78/159/115/100, with a towering Sp. Atk. Gigantamax Charizard uses Charizard's normal stats, with Dynamax boosting its HP for three turns. Base experience yield was 209 in Generations I–IV, 240 in Generations V–VII and has been 267 since Generation VIII; base friendship was 70 in Generations II–VII and has been 50 since Generation VIII. It reaches level 100 at 1,059,860 Exp. (Medium Slow). In Pokémon GO its base stats are 223 Attack, 173 Defense and 186 Stamina (Mega Charizard X 273/213/186, Mega Charizard Y 319/212/186).

Abilities

  • Blazesince Gen III
Powers up Charizard's Fire-type moves when its HP is low (a third or less).
  • Solar PowerHidden abilitysince Gen V
In harsh sunlight Charizard's Sp. Atk rises by half, but it loses an eighth of its max HP every turn.
  • Tough Clawssince Gen VI
Mega Charizard X's only Ability: it powers up moves that make direct contact by 30%.
  • Droughtsince Gen VI
Mega Charizard Y's only Ability: the sunlight turns harsh the moment it enters battle.

×½ResistsFireFightingSteelFairy
×¼Strongly resistsGrassBug
×0ImmuneGround

Generation I: Ice-type moves were 2× effective, because Fire did not yet resist Ice. The Steel resistance dates from Generation II, when Steel arrived, and the Fairy resistance from Generation VI. If Charizard is grounded – by Gravity, Smack Down, Ingrain, a Ring Target or, in Generation IV, an Iron Ball – Ground-type moves hit it for 2×. Mega Charizard Y keeps these matchups. Mega Charizard X (Fire/Dragon) is a different beast: weak to Ground, Rock and Dragon, resistant to Bug, Steel and Electric, and it takes just ¼ damage from Fire and Grass – and it loses the 4× Rock weakness.

Spin-offs & cameos

Super Smash Bros.

Charizard's Smash career is a proper glow-up. In the original Super Smash Bros. and in Melee it was a Poké Ball Pokémon, bursting out to sweep a Flamethrower from side to side across the stage, and Melee gave it a trophy that reckons its tail flame shows how powerful it is. Brawl finally made it a fighter as the heavyweight of the Pokémon Trainer's trio alongside Squirtle and Ivysaur: Flamethrower, Rock Smash and Fly were its specials, Pokémon Change swapped it out, and the team's Final Smash, Triple Finish, saw it pour on Fire Blast while its teammates fired Hydro Pump and SolarBeam. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U let it fly solo – it is the only Pokémon in the series to go from Poké Ball summon to playable fighter – with a new Flare Blitz side special, Rock Smash moved to its down special and an up throw modelled on the Seismic Toss of Ash's Charizard. Its Final Smash there, Mega Evolution, turns it into Mega Charizard X to blast foes with blue fire, and it earned three trophies, including one for its Mega form on Wii U. Ultimate sent it back to the Pokémon Trainer's team with Flamethrower, Flare Blitz, Fly and Pokémon Change, Triple Finish as its Final Smash and a Fighter Spirit of its own.

Pokémon GO

Charizard has been soaring through Pokémon GO since launch day in 2016, evolving from Charmeleon with Charmander Candy and walking a 3 km Buddy distance. Its family's first Community Day on 19 May 2018 debuted Shiny Charmander, Charmeleon and Charizard, and any Charizard evolved that day learned the exclusive Blast Burn. A second Charmander Community Day on 17 October 2020 swapped in Dragon Breath – the first time a returning Pokémon got a different exclusive move – and the Community Day Classic on 2 September 2023 offered both. Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y arrived with Mega Evolution itself on 27 August 2020, among the very first Megas alongside Venusaur, Blastoise and Beedrill; since 18 May 2026 each form has kept its own Mega Energy and Mega Level. Then on 26 October 2024 Gigantamax Charizard became one of GO's first three Gigantamax Pokémon, taking on teams of Trainers in Max Battles with G-Max Wildfire and returning for the Powerful Potential weekend (8–9 March 2025) and Replay: GO Bigger (25 April 2026). Shadow Charizard roams in GO too – purify one and it can learn Return.

A melee All-Rounder from launch day, growing from Charmander mid-match and grabbing foes for the Seismic Slam Unite Move; Mega Charizard X (24 October 2025) and Mega Charizard Y (19 December 2025) followed.

Charizard – Charizard in Pokémon Sleep
Helper Pokémon

A Snoozing-type ingredient specialist bringing Bean Sausage, Warming Ginger and Fiery Herbs, with sleep styles such as Tummy-Up and Atop-Belly Sleep.

Resident

Pokopia Pokédex #006 with the Burn and Fly specialties; it loves lots of fire, nice breezes, wooden things, exercise and a touch of luxury.

Battler

Cordy keeps a Charizard on his team in the first tutorial battle, and both Charizardites cost 2,000 VP at the Frontier Shop.

Moves

In Red and Green, Charizard's moveset was oddly earthbound for a winged dragon: Scratch, Growl, Ember and Leer, then Rage, Slash, Flamethrower and a level-55 Fire Spin, with no Flying-type move by level-up and no Fly at all until Yellow. Gold and Silver finally gave it Wing Attack at level 36, plus Scary Face, a level-up Dragon Rage and its first egg moves, such as Belly Drum and Outrage. FireRed and LeafGreen added a starting Heat Wave and the mighty Blast Burn, and Generation IV brought Fire Fang and a level-66 Flare Blitz, with Air Slash, Dragon Claw and Shadow Claw waiting right from the start.

Black and White added Flame Burst and the scorching Inferno, X and Y gave it two Mega Evolutions (Mega Charizard X turns every Dragon move into a same-type hit), and Sword and Shield streamlined the lot: Air Slash on evolving, Dragon Breath at 12, Flamethrower at 30 and Flare Blitz at 62, with Hurricane and Heat Crash on TRs. Scarlet and Violet's TM list runs to 61 entries, Blast Burn and Dragon Cheer among them, and Legends: Z-A rewrites the script again with cooldowns instead of PP, Tackle in place of Scratch, Fire Blast on evolving and Dragon Rush at level 42.

Signature moves

FireFlamethrower

Charizard's calling card has been in its level-up list in every single game, from level 46 in Red and Blue to level 30 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet, Violet and Legends: Z-A, and Crystal's move tutor taught it too.

FireFire Spin

The fiery whirlwind that capped its list at level 55 in Red and Blue has never left. Its power more than doubled from 15 to 35 in Black and White, and in Legends: Z-A it arrives as early as level 20.

FlyingWing Attack

Red and Blue's Charizard couldn't learn a single Flying move by levelling up. Gold and Silver fixed that with Wing Attack at level 36, the very level Charmeleon evolves, and it was the evolution move in Sun, Moon and Let's Go before Air Slash took over.

FlyingFly

Famously, HM02 Fly only works for Charizard in Yellow, so Red and Blue players had a dragon that couldn't take to the skies. Every game since has let it fly.

DragonDragon Claw

A TM since Ruby and Sapphire and a starting move in every level-up list from Generation IV on (Let's Go aside). For Mega Charizard X, which turns Fire/Dragon, it suddenly packs the same-type bonus.

FireFlare Blitz

Debuting at level 66 in Generation IV, this 120-power fireball charge is also an egg move a Charizard can pass on to Charmander. X, Y, Sun and Moon put it on the starting list as well, and it closes the list at level 62 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet.

FireBlast Burn (via tutor)

The ultimate Fire-type attack: 150 power, then a turn to recharge. FireRed and LeafGreen's tutor at Cape Brink introduced it, every generation since has offered it by tutor, and Scarlet and Violet made it TM153 (TM158 in Legends: Z-A).

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow10 level-up · 28 TM/HM

Charizard is what your Charmander becomes in Red, Green and Blue, evolving from Charmeleon at level 36 (in Yellow, a boy on Route 24 hands you a Charmander). Strangely for a winged dragon, it learns no Flying-type moves by levelling up, and only Yellow lets it learn Fly from HM02.

No Charizard lives in Johto, so it flies in from Red, Blue or Yellow by Time Capsule, and a Shiny Charizard was handed out at the Gotta Catch 'Em All Station! events in the US in 2002 and 2003. Wing Attack finally arrives at level 36, Crystal's move tutor offers Flamethrower, and Charmander from two special events (one in the US, one in Japan) came knowing Crunch.

FireRed and LeafGreen bring Charizard home as your evolved starter, while Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald need a trade or an event, such as the level-70 Charizard of the 2006 Journey Across America and Top 10 Distribution tours. FireRed and LeafGreen also debut Blast Burn, taught by an elderly woman at Cape Brink, and tweak the level-up list: Heat Wave and Metal Claw join the starting set, and Rage drops out.

Charizard doesn't live anywhere in Unova, so it arrives by Poké Transfer, or hatches from the Charmander Eggs given away in Japan and South Korea in 2012 and 2013, which already knew False Swipe, Block, Acrobatics and Blast Burn. Flame Burst and the scorching Inferno are new at levels 32 and 62, Fire Pledge joins Blast Burn at the tutors, and Black 2 and White 2 add a whole stack more, from Dragon Pulse to Roost.

In X and Y, Professor Sycamore offers you a Charmander at his Lumiose City lab, and Charizard gains not one but two Mega Evolutions: Mega Charizard X turns Fire/Dragon, so Dragon Claw, Outrage and friends get the same-type bonus, while Mega Charizard Y stays Fire/Flying. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire need a trade or an event, and a whole flock of 2014–16 event Charizard arrived already knowing Inferno, Fire Spin or the adorable Hold Hands.

Sun and Moon only get Charizard by trade or event, such as Ash's Charizard, given away in Japan in 2017 knowing its anime favourite Seismic Toss; Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon let you find a Charmander with Island Scan on Sundays. Wing Attack becomes the move Charizard learns the instant it evolves.

Charizard is part of Sword and Shield's base game: once you are Champion, Leon gives you a Charmander with the Gigantamax Factor at his home in Postwick, and Gigantamax Charizard shows up in Max Raid Battles at the Lake of Outrage, where its Fire-type attacks become G-Max Wildfire. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Charmander lives in the Grand Underground once you have the National Pokédex; Charizard sits out Legends: Arceus entirely.

A level-100 Dragon Tera Type Charizard starred in special Tera Raid Battles from December 2022 (with return visits in 2024 and 2026), a Dark Tera Type Charizard was given away in summer 2023, and The Indigo Disk lets you catch Charmander in the Terarium's Savanna Biome once its biodiversity is boosted. The level-up list is almost identical to Sword and Shield's, and Blast Burn is now TM153.

04Ash's Charizard & friends

Charizard in the anime

Debut EP017Island of the Giant Pokémon · First major role EP046Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon · Ash’s loyal Charizard, its battle record, and 11 other trainers who raised one.

Charizard has been one of the anime's headline acts since the very first Japanese opening. Its story begins with Ash's own Charmeleon, which evolved into a magnificent but famously disobedient Charizard before becoming one of his most trusted partners and finding a second home among the wild Charizard of the Charicific Valley. Ever since, the Flame Pokémon has been the anime's go-to symbol of raw power – the Pokémon you send in when the battle really matters.

Plenty of other Trainers agree. Alain's Mega Charizard X beat Ash-Greninja to win the Lumiose Conference; Leon's Gigantamax Charizard ruled the World Coronation Series until the Masters Eight final; Kiawe's laid-back Ride Pokémon unleashed Z-Moves in Alola; and Friede's Charizard, a Dark-type Terastallizer that can also become Mega Charizard Y, leads the Rising Volt Tacklers in Pokémon Horizons. Add Red's Mega Evolution against Mewtwo in Pokémon Origins, Trevor's Mega Charizard Y, Liza's Charla and a Team Rocket that keeps borrowing one, and few species can match Charizard's résumé on screen.

How it joined
Abandoned on a rock by its Trainer, Damian, the Charmander was rushed through a rainstorm to a Pokémon Center by Ash – and when Damian came back for it, it chose Ash instead.

Personality

Ash's Charizard is pride with wings. Freshly evolved, it treated most battles as beneath it: a fellow Fire-type such as Blaine's Magmar or Ritchie's Zippo was worth its time, a little Pikachu was not, and its usual answer to Ash was a Flamethrower to the face. The night Ash nursed it back from the brink in the Orange Islands turned that arrogance into fierce loyalty, though the hunger for strength never faded – it picked a fight with every Charizard in the Charicific Valley and lost every one. Years of Liza's training made it a steadier veteran who could play peacemaker between squabbling Dragonite, fight side by side with Pignite and pal around with Ash's other Fire-types at Professor Oak's lab – yet the scorching hello stayed a running joke until Pokémon Journeys.

Before the wings and the swagger, Ash's Charizard was a frightened Charmander left on a rock by its Trainer, Damian. Ash raced back through a downpour when he learned Damian never meant to return, and when the boy finally showed up the little lizard turned its back on him (EP011). Evolving into Charmeleon (EP043) brought a sneer and a short fuse, and in Grampa Canyon wounded pride finished the job: knocked flat and taunted by a revived Aerodactyl, Charmeleon evolved mid-chase and took to the sky as Charizard. Ash believed it had come to save him, but it really wanted a rematch – though as Jigglypuff's song sent the canyon to sleep, it still caught the falling Ash before dozing off itself (EP046).

What followed was one of the anime's most famous sulks. At the Cinnabar Gym it flew out of the ring for a nap and got Ash disqualified (EP058), yet a fiery rival was another matter: in the rematch inside the volcano it shrugged off a dunk in lava and floored Blaine's Magmar with its first Seismic Toss to win the Volcano Badge – then flamed Ash for good measure (EP059). At the Indigo Plateau Conference it saw off Ritchie's Zippo, decided his Pikachu, Sparky, wasn't worth fighting and lay down to sleep. The referee disqualified it, and Ash's run ended in the fifth round (EP079).

Glimpses of the partner underneath kept surfacing. In Mewtwo Strikes Back it flew at Mewtwo before Ash could stop it, lost its duel with a clone Charizard and wept when Ash was turned to stone (M01). Back in Pallet Town it seemed more interested in the buffet than in Ash, but still plucked Pikachu from Team Rocket's balloon (EP081). The Orange Islands tested everyone's patience: it torched Ash before carving the winning ice sled at the Navel Gym (EP093), respected only Tracey's Scyther (EP098) and, after flattening a boy's Tauros, rampaged until Prima's Slowbro pinned it with Disable (EP099).

Everything changed on Cleopatra Island. Ignoring Ash against Tad's Poliwrath, Charizard was frozen solid by Ice Beam. Ash sat up all night by the fire, rubbing warmth back into it until his own hands were raw, and by morning the bond was back. Charizard tore Pikachu free from Team Rocket's drill, unleashed its first Dragon Rage and won the rematch with Seismic Toss – fighting with Ash at last, not just near him (EP105).

The reformed Charizard became Ash's ace. In The Power of One it teamed up with Pikachu to free Moltres from Lawrence III's cage (M02); at the Kumquat Gym it learned to share a battlefield with Pikachu in the anime's first official Double Battle (EP108). In the Orange League final it burned through Drake's Electabuzz, then traded Dragon Rages with his Dragonite. Charizard fell, but it left Dragonite reeling for Pikachu to finish, and the whole team entered the Hall of Fame (EP112).

In Johto it was almost too good. It shrugged off new Trainer Casey's entire team (EP118), wrestled a feisty wild Chikorita to a standstill (EP126) and, after a Whirlwind threw its own fire back in its face, won Ash's first Johto badge from Falkner's Pidgeot with Fire Spin and Seismic Toss (EP131). Then came the Charicific Valley, where Liza looks after wild Charizard that grow strong by battling one another. They flattened Ash's every time, and Liza's partner Charla pitched it into a lake – but it held its post at the gates all night and blasted Team Rocket's mecha at dawn to earn its place. Ash told it coldly that he had no use for a weak Charizard, pointed it towards the valley and ran, crying silently, so he couldn't change his mind; a Flamethrower into the sky was its goodbye (EP134).

It never stopped being his. Seeing Entei carry off Ash's mother on the news, it flew to Greenfield and battled Entei with Ash on its back (M03). Liza brought it – Charla, by now its constant companion, at its side – to the Dragon Holy Land, where it helped calm a raging Dragonite (EP253) and won the Blackthorn Gym's final round by boiling away Dragonair's pool and finishing with a flaming Seismic Toss for Ash's Rising Badge (EP254). Summoned by Brock's late-night call to Liza (EP269), it beat Gary's Scizor, Golem and Blastoise one after another to win the Silver Conference's most personal match (EP270), before falling to Harrison's Blaziken in a gruelling quarter-final (EP271–EP272).

Two Battle Frontier cameos showed how far it had come. Called from the valley to face Noland's Articuno at the Battle Factory, it thawed a frozen wingtip with a brand-new Overheat and caught Articuno mid-Steel Wing for a Seismic Toss – the first time a non-Legendary beat a Legendary one-on-one in the anime (AG135–AG136). Brandon's Dusclops was a different story: trapped by Mean Look, confused and burned, Charizard watched its Seismic Toss pass through the Ghost-type before a Shadow Punch ended its day (AG189). Its teammates finished the job, and it flew home to the valley.

Its longest comeback began when a Kanto fair stirred Ash's memories in Unova. Professor Oak sent Charizard over in exchange for Unfezant, and it promptly gave Iris's Dragonite a run for its money until N called the fight off – and Ash used his Pokédex to show Iris it isn't a Dragon-type at all (BW116). It held off Colress's mind-controlled Dragonite (BW117), gave a blocked-up Pignite a dizzying spin through the sky (BW119) and drilled Ash and N out from under the White Ruins with a spinning Dragon Tail (BW121).

Across the Decolore Islands it was Ash's scout and enforcer: tracking pirates to their hidden cove (BW129), knocking down a treasure-guarding Ninetales (BW135), trying in vain to keep the peace between Clair's and Iris's Dragonite (BW136) and sending Team Rocket packing (BW139, BW141). Back in Pallet Town its Flamethrower joined one last team blast, and this time it stayed – no more valley, just Professor Oak's Laboratory (BW142).

Pokémon Journeys found it waiting at the lab, and for once it greeted Ash without a Flamethrower (JN068). It helped Gengar learn Will-O-Wisp and watched Ash's Masters Eight run from home; in the final against Leon, Pikachu saw it among the friends cheering it on in a vision (JN132). An old squabble with Squirtle flared up and fizzled out as they fought a warehouse fire alongside the Squirtle Squad (JN141), and in Ash's last Journeys adventure it joined the search for a missing Charmander (JN147).

Why didn’t it evolve?

No first partner of Ash's grew up faster. Charmander became Charmeleon in The March of the Exeggutor Squad (EP043) and Charizard just three episodes later (EP046) – a full evolution only 35 episodes after joining Ash. Neither evolution came from careful training: each arrived in the heat of the moment, and each made it prouder and harder to handle, until Charizard would only fight opponents it considered worthy. It remains Ash's only Kanto first partner to evolve – Bulbasaur and Squirtle never did – and it has never Mega Evolved or Gigantamaxed on screen; those forms belong to Alain's and Leon's Charizard.

Ash’s Charizard trivia

  • It is Ash's only Kanto first partner to evolve – and it reached its final stage in just 35 episodes (EP011 to EP046), quicker than any of his other first partners.
  • Its Dragon Rage in Charizard Chills (EP105) was the first Dragon-type move used by any Pokémon in the anime.
  • Beating Noland's Articuno (AG136) made it the first non-Legendary in the anime to defeat a Legendary Pokémon one-on-one.
  • Before Charizard Chills, the only opponents it would battle properly for Ash were fellow Fire-types – Blaine's Magmar, Mewtwo's clone Charizard and Ritchie's Zippo.
  • Greeting Ash with a Flamethrower to the face was a running gag for years; their reunion in Advice to Goh! (JN068) was the first time it didn't torch him.
  • Japanese dialogue in Charizard's Burning Ambitions (EP134) confirms it is male – the first time a first partner Pokémon's gender was confirmed at its final stage.
  • No Pokémon of Ash's went longer between capture and settling at Professor Oak's lab: 788 episodes, from EP011 to BW142.
  • It used Tackle (EP108) at a time when no Charizard could learn that move in the games.

Other trainers’ Charizard

Alain's Charizard
Alain
rival (XYZ), Lumiose Conference winner
Charmander → Charmeleon → Charizard (Mega Charizard X)

First seen: XYS01Pokémon: Mega Evolution Special I

Alain met his partner as a Charmander while working as one of Professor Sycamore's assistants, and the two set off together to hunt down Mega Stones. By the Mega Evolution Specials it is a proud, battle-hungry Charizard that Mega Evolves into Mega Charizard X and signs off with Blast Burn – though its first big test ended in defeat by Elite Four member Siebold's Mega Blastoise (XYS01). It then swept a gauntlet of Mega Evolution Trainers set up by Lysandre, finishing with Elite Four member Malva's Houndoom (XYS04). In XYZ it became the wall Ash could not climb: it beat Greninja on their first meeting (XY106), won Alain his eighth Badge against Korrina's Mega Lucario (XY123) and, in the Lumiose Conference final, outlasted Ash-Greninja after a colossal Blast Burn–Water Shuriken collision to hand Alain the title (XY131). After helping to topple Lysandre and the Megalith Zygarde, it returned for the Masters Eight Tournament, where it knocked out Leon's Rillaboom before falling to Leon's own Charizard (JN115).

Leon's Charizard
Leon
Galar Champion and World Coronation Series Monarch (Pokémon Journeys)
Charmander → Charmeleon → Charizard (Gigantamax)

First seen: JN012Flash of the Titans!

Leon's very first Pokémon was a Charmander that set out with him and Sonia, and it became the first member of his team to evolve. By Pokémon Journeys it is the unbeaten ace of the Galar Champion: it Gigantamaxes at the first opportunity, ferries its famously directionless Trainer from place to place and celebrates every win with a Flamethrower into the sky. It took the World Coronation Series crown from Lance's Gyarados with G-Max Wildfire (JN012), beat Ash's Gigantamax Pikachu in an unofficial match (JN013), fought rampaging Gigantamax Pokémon and Eternatus itself on the Darkest Day (JN042–JN045), and saw off Raihan, Flint, Alain and Diantha. Its reign ended only in the Masters Eight final, where Ash's Pikachu outlasted it in a last head-on collision and Ash was crowned World Champion (JN132).

Kiawe's Charizard
Kiawe
companion (Sun & Moon), Trial Captain of Wela Volcano Park
Charizard (Ride Pokémon, inherited from his grandfather)

First seen: SM001Alola to New Adventure!

Kiawe's Charizard once belonged to his grandfather, and of all the first partner Pokémon owned by the main cast it is the only one that was already fully evolved when it debuted. It was the sight of it flying overhead that led Ash to Kiawe in the first place – where it promptly snoozed through Team Skull's challenge (SM001). Laid-back, tireless and unusually fond of a long bath, it is Kiawe's Ride Pokémon: it flies him between Akala and Melemele for school, helps deliver his family's dairy produce and carries him on Ultra Guardians missions. Its finest hour came when Kiawe needed Tapu Lele's scales to save his friends: battered by the guardian deity, it climbed back into the sky with Aerial Ace, won the scales and earned Kiawe a Flyinium Z from Tapu Fini for its first Supersonic Skystrike (SM107). That Z-Move clinched Kiawe's Manalo Conference quarter-final against Sophocles's Vikavolt (SM134), and in a last battle at the Ruins of Life its Inferno Overdrive was overpowered by Ash's Lycanroc (SM145).

Friede's Charizard
Friede
Captain of the Rising Volt Tacklers (Pokémon Horizons)
Charmander → Charizard (Dark Tera Type, Mega Charizard Y)

First seen: HZ001The Pendant That Starts It All (Part One)

Friede's very first Pokémon was a Charmander that dreamed of flying. He rescued it after one attempt ended in injury, caught it with a Poké Ball from Lucca, and the pair even built a hang-glider to share the sky. As a Charizard it is the Rising Volt Tacklers' powerhouse and the peacemaking co-leader of the Brave Olivine's Pokémon, flying to Liko's rescue in the very first episodes (HZ001). It Terastallizes into a Dark type (HZ014), and that Dark Tera Blast has seen off Amethio's Ceruledge (HZ025) and Spinel's Beheeyem (HZ086), though Black Rayquaza twice knocked it out of the sky (HZ045, HZ082). After Roy's Skeledirge beat it in a fiery one-on-one, Friede revealed one more trick: Mega Evolution into Mega Charizard Y (HZ122).

Red's Charizard
Red
protagonist of Pokémon Origins
Charmander → Charmeleon → Charizard (Mega Charizard X)

First seen: PO01Pokémon Origins – File 1: Red
Evolved: PO03Pokémon Origins – File 3: Giovanni

The hero of Pokémon Origins picked Charmander as his first partner, lost his very first battle to Blue's Squirtle, and saw it grow through Charmeleon into Charizard after beating Koga. Charizard's first clash with Giovanni at Silph Co. ended in a crushing defeat by Nidoqueen, but at the Viridian Gym rematch it grabbed Rhydon and slammed it down with Seismic Toss (PO03), then won Red the Champion title by trapping Blue's Blastoise in Fire Spin and finishing it with Fire Blast. In Cerulean Cave, the last Pokémon standing against Mewtwo, it reacted to the mysterious stone Mr. Fuji had given Red and became Mega Charizard X – the first Mega Evolution ever animated – weakening Mewtwo enough for Red to catch it (PO04).

Trevor's Charizard
Trevor
Kalos friend and rival of Ash (XY)
Charmander → Charmeleon → Charizard (Mega Charizard Y)

First seen: XY039Summer of Discovery!
Evolved: XY125A League of His Own!

Trevor, the camera-toting member of Ash's Kalos circle, set out with a Charmander from Professor Sycamore (XY039) – an energetic, battle-loving partner that he was still struggling to calm down as a Charmeleon (XY086). Its final form was saved for the big stage: at the Lumiose Conference, Trevor opened against Alain with a Charizard that promptly Mega Evolved into Mega Charizard Y, its Drought Ability supercharging Heat Wave. Alain's Mega Charizard X answered with a tail-slapped wall of water and a knockout Flamethrower, then swept Trevor's Aerodactyl and Florges as well (XY125).

Liza's Charizard
Liza
caretaker of the Charicific Valley (Johto)
Charizard (♀), nicknamed Charla

First seen: EP134Charizard's Burning Ambitions

Liza looks after the Charicific Valley, a Johto reserve where wild Charizard come to train and grow stronger, and her partner Charla – raised from a Charmander – is the only Charizard there that isn't wild. Charla gave Ash's Charizard a frosty welcome, outflying it on the way in and later pitching it into a lake at the valley gates, but the newcomer's stubborn courage, and its demolition of Team Rocket's Charizard-catching mecha, won Liza over, and Ash left his partner there to train (EP134). Charla and the valley's Charizard are watching the news from Greenfield when Ash's Charizard flies off to help him (M03), and she appears again in flashback when it rejoins Ash in Unova (BW116). In time, Charla became the love interest of Ash's Charizard.

Clark's Charizard
Clark
Ever Grande Conference competitor (Advanced Generation)
Charizard

First seen: AG128Shocks and Bonds

Clark reached the Ever Grande Conference's third and final Double Battle qualifying round with two Fire types, Charizard and Quilava, against Ash's Grovyle and Glalie. Once Grovyle had knocked out Quilava, Charizard took Grovyle down with Steel Wing – but Glalie raised a forest of ice pillars to block its Flamethrower, ricocheted between them at speed and ended the match with a critical-hit Headbutt, sending Ash through to the Victory Tournament (AG128).

Jessie and James
Team Rocket
Charizard (borrowed or delivered by mistake – never kept)

First seen: EP056The Ultimate Test

Team Rocket have never kept a Charizard, but they keep getting their hands on one. At the Pokémon League Admissions Exam, James drew a Charizard from a belt of mystery Poké Balls and was expelled for sending it out alongside Ivysaur – and when the trio tried to set it on the head instructor, it turned on them instead (EP056). Jessie borrowed one of the Battle Park's Charizard, which surprised everyone with Dig before Ash's Totodile brought it crashing down with Water Gun; the park's Pokémon then blasted their 'handlers' away (EP248). Best of all, a Team Rocket Delibird once delivered a Charizard to Jessie and an Aggron to James, and the pair held their own against Brock's Steelix and Ash's Donphan at Pewter Gym – until Delibird took both back, because they had been meant for Butch and Cassidy all along (AG177).

Mewtwo
antagonist of Mewtwo Strikes Back
cloned Charizard

First seen: M01Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back

Among the clones Mewtwo created to prove its superiority was a Charizard – not a copy of Ash's, but grown from a Pokémon Mewtwo had obtained by other means. In the battle between original and cloned Pokémon it overpowered Ash's Charizard with ease – in the Japanese version Mewtwo orders a Seismic Toss – and Ash's partner was swept into one of Mewtwo's own Poké Balls (M01). The clone is seen again in Mewtwo Returns, and it wins again in the CG remake Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution (M22).

Corey Demario's Charizard
Corey Demario
Electabuzz baseball pitcher (Pokémon Chronicles)
Charizard, nicknamed Don

First seen: HS17Those Darn Electabuzz!

Corey Demario, star pitcher of Casey's beloved Electabuzz, raised a Charizard called Don – a nickname that plays on Charizard's Japanese name, Lizardon. After a shoulder injury drove Corey from the game, Don lost its confidence along with its Flamethrower and its ability to fly, and was left in the care of Corey's younger brother Benny. Casey set about coaching them both: Don lost a test battle against Shigeo's Ampharos, but during a storm it conquered a fear of water dating back to its Charmander days, rescued Corey and Casey and rediscovered its flight and its fire. It ends the story soaring over the stadium as Corey makes his comeback (HS17).

Mega & Gigantamax Charizard on screen

Charizard is the anime's Mega Evolution poster child: Red's Mega Charizard X was the first Mega Evolution ever animated, Alain made the form his trademark, and Trevor and Friede brought Mega Charizard Y to the battlefield. In Pokémon Journeys, Leon's Gigantamax Charizard performed the anime's first G-Max Move and reigned unbeaten until the Masters Eight final.

Anime trivia

  • Charizard is the first species in the anime to use every major battle gimmick: Mega Evolution (XYS01), a Z-Move (SM107), Gigantamax (JN012) and Terastallization (HZ014).
  • Charizard is the very first Pokémon to appear in the anime's original Japanese opening – outside Japan, Mewtwo took that honour.
  • Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl is the only animated series in which no Charizard appears at all.
  • Leon's Charizard used 20 different moves by the end of the Masters Eight Tournament – more than any other single Pokémon in the anime, spread across eight types.
  • Both of Alain's Charizard's on-screen defeats in Trainer battles came against a fully evolved Kanto first partner using Dragon Pulse: Siebold's Mega Blastoise (XYS01) and Leon's Charizard (JN115).
  • Alain's Charizard was the first non-Champion's Pokémon in the anime to defeat an Elite Four member's Pokémon, and in JN115 it became the first Pokémon to knock out one of Leon's in an on-screen Trainer battle.
  • Kiawe's Charizard is the only Ride Pokémon ever to battle in a Pokémon League Conference.
  • Friede's Charizard first Terastallized into a Dark type in July 2023, one week before the Darkness-type Tera Charizard ex arrived in Japanese card shops.

Charizard in the movies

13 films, 2 Pikachu shorts and 5 specials featuring Charizard.

Charizard has been a big-screen regular since the very first film. Ash's famously stubborn Charizard lunges at Mewtwo in Mewtwo Strikes Back, helps free Moltres in The Power of One, and then gets its finest film moment in Spell of the Unown, flying all the way from the Charicific Valley to catch Ash in mid-air and duel Entei. It returns for Genesect and the Legend Awakened, gets a brand-new origin story in I Choose You!, where Cross abandons it as a Charmander, and reprises its 1998 role in the CGI remake Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution. Elsewhere there are Mega Charizard cameos, Alain's Mega Charizard X opening Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, and a snarling live-action Charizard brawling in Detective Pikachu's underground arena. On TV it is the star of Alain's four Mega Evolution Specials, and its funniest outing is still Pikachu's Vacation, where it spends half the short with its head stuck in a climbing frame.

Ash's Charizard; Mewtwo's clone Charizard

Ash's Charizard was still in its 'won't listen to anyone' phase when the first film was made, and it shows: it lunges at Mewtwo before Ash has given a single order. In the stadium showdown with Mewtwo's clones, Ash tells it to rely on speed instead of power, but the clone Charizard wins anyway, and Charizard is swallowed by one of Mewtwo's capture balls along with Corey's Venusaur and Neesha's Blastoise. Once Ash sets the captured Pokémon free, it goes after its clone again, and the fight only stops when Ash throws himself between Mew and Mewtwo. In the Japanese version Mewtwo tells the clone to finish it off with Seismic Toss; the dub simply says 'finish it'.

Ash's Charizard

Charizard gets some fresh air on Maren's boat, lets off a burst of flame and is promptly recalled. Things heat up aboard Lawrence III's flying fortress, where its Flamethrower joins Pikachu's electricity and Squirtle's Water Gun to break Moltres out of its cage. When the legendary birds clash, it trades fire with Moltres alongside Pikachu and Squirtle, until a rift and a wall of ice cut Ash off from Ice Island and Charizard is forced back into its Poké Ball. Eagle-eyed fans spotted that it obeys Ash throughout, even though the film opened in Japan before Charizard Chills, the episode where it finally starts listening to him, had aired.

Ash's Charizard; Liza's Charizard (Charla)

Charizard's finest hour on the big screen. Training in the Charicific Valley, it sees news footage of Entei carrying off Ash's mum and flies all the way to Greenfield, arriving just in time to catch Ash and Pikachu as they tumble from the crystal-covered Hale mansion. With Ash on its back it trades Flamethrowers with Entei (in the Japanese version Ash also calls for a Fire Spin that briefly sends Entei flying), while Molly's Unown-fuelled imagination throws up crystal spikes to block its flight. Pinned down and facing a point-blank Fire Blast, it is spared only when Molly begs Entei to stop. Charizard then helps break through the Unown's barrier before flying home to the valley, where Liza and her Charizard Charla had watched the drama unfold on the news.

Ash's Charizard

Back on Ash's team after its Unova return, Charizard lands its first film role since Spell of the Unown. In the climax over New Tork City's Pokémon Hills, Mewtwo and the Red Genesect come plunging out of the sky, and Ash sends out Charizard while Iris sends out Dragonite. The two fliers try to hold up the net of threads the Genesect weave to catch them, but it's too much, and in the end a giant cushion of water conjured with Psychic-type moves breaks the fall.

Ash's Charizard (evolves from Charmander); Cross, its first Trainer

The anniversary retelling of Ash's journey rewrites Charizard's backstory. Its original Trainer is Cross, who leaves it out in a rainstorm for being weak; Ash and Verity rescue it and nurse it back to health in a cave with Sorrel, and it soon evolves into Charmeleon. After a crushing defeat by Cross's Incineroar, Charmeleon gets its rematch at Mount Tensei, evolves into Charizard in the middle of the battle and wins. When Marshadow turns the wild Pokémon and Cross's Lycanroc against everyone, Charizard shields Cross from an attack and helps free Lycanroc, and, unlike its TV self, it listens to Ash the whole way through.

Ash's Charizard; Mewtwo's clone Charizard

The CGI remake gives Charizard the same role as in 1998 but tones down its rebellious streak: it gets more screen time (including a new lunch scene) and mostly responds well to Ash. A little of the old attitude survives, though. It greets the messenger Dragonite with a Flamethrower, and when it yawns its way out of its Poké Ball on New Island it fires another at Mewtwo, who calls it ill-mannered. It still loses to its clone and gets captured, but this time Ash leaps after the ball as it is carried away.

Sebastian's Charizard

The live-action Charizard is a fight-club bruiser. In the Roundhouse, an illegal underground battle arena, Sebastian demands a rematch, because Pikachu's shocks scarred his prized Charizard (and tore his coat) in an earlier fight. He secretly doses Charizard with R and it goes berserk, and when Tim leaps in to protect Pikachu, the vials hidden in Sebastian's coat break and send every Pokémon in the place into a frenzy. A freshly evolved Gyarados finally knocks Charizard out with Hydro Pump, flooding the arena.

Pikachu shorts

  • PK01Pikachu's Vacation (1998) · Ash's Charizard
Charizard is the short's big comic victim. Pikachu and Raichu, racing each other round the Pokémon park, stomp on its tail; it chases them down and blasts them onto a sleeping Snorlax, then careers out of control and gets its head stuck in a climbing frame. A tug-of-war with a rope ends with everyone flying backwards, and Charizard bursts into tears until Pikachu talks the bullies into saying sorry and lending a hand. Once it's free, it flies off with Psyduck and lands right on top of Meowth. The short premiered with Mewtwo Strikes Back, and in a number of countries it reached cinemas before Ash's Charmander had evolved on TV, giving away its final form early.
  • PT03Blossom's Dream (POKÉTOON) (2021) · Char-ly, Blossom's father's Charizard
Blossom dreams of becoming Champion with her dad's elderly Charizard, Char-ly, but when she shows off by ordering Fly and Flamethrower it is far too worn out to obey. When a tremor throws the town into panic, Char-ly flies her up into the sky, where its Flamethrower and Fire Blast calm the raging Nidoking and Nidoqueen, and Blossom's parents finally give her their blessing to start her journey.

TV specials

  • Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns (2000)
A clone Charizard is among the Pokémon Mewtwo created, now living quietly with it on Mount Quena.
  • Mega Evolution Special I (2014)
Alain and his Mega Charizard X tear through Kalos's Mega Evolution users: they beat Astrid's Mega Absol, finishing with Blast Burn, and Remo's Mega Garchomp, before Elite Four member Siebold's Mega Blastoise finally stops them with Dragon Pulse. A Mega Charizard Y appears in the intro.
  • Mega Evolution Special II (2014)
Mega Charizard X's duel with Steven's Metagross is cut short by Lysandre's Pyroar. A flashback shows how Alain, then training a Charmeleon, was given his Charizardite X by Lysandre. Later Charizard and Metagross take on Mega Rayquaza, which shrugs off its Flamethrower and blasts them with Draco Meteor.
  • Mega Evolution Special III (2015)
Mega Charizard X flies straight at Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, dodging Solar Beam and Ice Beam and using Steel Wing to keep Groudon from reaching the Giant Rock, until Precipice Blades brings it down on the ice and Alain has to dig it out.
  • Mega Evolution Special IV (2015)
Charizard battles its way through ten straight matches against Mega Evolved opponents, among them Mega Venusaur, Mega Alakazam, Mega Scizor and Mega Pinsir, and seals the run against Elite Four member Malva's Mega Houndoom, which falls to Blast Burn.

Charizard in the Pokémon TCG

140 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Charizard's first dozen years in the English TCG read like a greatest-hits album. Mitsuhiro Arita's Base Set holo turned it into the hobby's ultimate pull in 1999. Then the variations rolled in: Ken Sugimori's snarling Dark Charizard for Team Rocket, Blaine's Charizard, and a black Shining Charizard hidden in Neo Destiny. The e-Card era added e-Reader Charizards and a Colorless Crystal Charizard, and the EX years brought Charizard ex with a 200-damage Burn Down, a Lightning/Metal Charizard δ and a Shiny Darkness-type Charizard ☆. The Diamond & Pearl years closed the decade with Arita redrawing his own classic for Stormfront, Cyrus's Charizard G and its LV.X, and Kagemaru Himeno's Arceus card. Japan collected some extras along the way, including two Ken Sugimori promos and Lance's Charizard.

From 2012 onwards Charizard stopped being one famous holo and became the showcase for every new trick the TCG learned. The Black & White sets gave the same card three different illustrations, including a black Shiny Secret Rare, before Flashfire (2014) delivered Charizard-EX and both Mega Evolutions, whose 300-damage attacks were a first for the game. Each era since has added its own twist: Charizard-GX and its Shiny Hidden Fates recolour, TAG TEAMs with Reshiram and Braixen, Gigantamax Charizard VMAX and its Rainbow Rare (a tournament prize in Japan), Charizard VSTAR, a Shiny Radiant Charizard, Lance's Charizard V, a Dark-type Terastal Charizard ex, and Mega Charizard X ex and Y ex for the Mega Evolution era. The art kept pace too, moving from the glossy CG of 5ban Graphics and PLANETA to scene-setting Special Illustration Rares by AKIRA EGAWA, miki kudo and danciao, with Mitsuhiro Arita's Base Set original reprinted for the 20th, 25th and 30th anniversaries. Since 2024 TCG Pocket has made Charizard a star all over again, from Genetic Apex's Crown Rare Charizard ex to Shiny Mega Charizard X and Y ex.

Cards to know

  • Base Set 4/102 — The card that made the hobby. Mitsuhiro Arita's roaring Charizard with its 100-damage Fire Spin was every playground's most wanted card in 1999, and 1st Edition copies are still the grail of collecting.
  • Neo Destiny 107/105 (Shining Charizard) — A secret rare starring the black Shiny Charizard from Gold and Silver, which you could play as a Basic. Its White-hot Flame hits for 100, and the card has a glossy metallic finish.
  • EX Dragon Frontiers 100/101 (Charizard ☆ δ) — Charizard Star: a Shiny Darkness-type Charizard you could drop straight onto the Bench, with a 150-damage Dark Swirl that also mills your opponent's deck.
  • Flashfire 69/106 (M Charizard-EX) — Mega Charizard X's first card turned the Fire icon into a Dragon type with Fairy Weakness. Its Wild Blaze and Mega Y's Crimson Dive were the first attacks in the game to hit for 300 base damage.
  • Champion's Path 074/073 (Charizard VMAX) — The Rainbow Rare Gigantamax Charizard.
  • Obsidian Flames 125/197 (Charizard ex) — A Terastallised Charizard with the Dark Tera Type, so the world's favourite Fire Pokémon became a Darkness-type card. Infernal Reign powers it up the moment it evolves, and Burning Darkness hits harder with every Prize your opponent takes.

Charizard in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

Charizard's manga career began almost as soon as the games came out. In Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters, which started in spring 1996, Green's Charmander skips Charmeleon altogether and keeps devolving and re-evolving to comic effect, while Pokémon Adventures has given the species three big roles: Blue's loyal partner (later a Mega Charizard Y), X's dozy Salamè (a Mega Charizard X) and Leon's Champion Charizard. The Electric Tale of Pikachu shows the darker side of Ash's disobedient Charizard, which savages Ritchie's in the Indigo finals, and Pokémon Zensho gives Satoshi a Charizard that wins him the title. On the bookshelf it has its own Scholastic chapter book, Charizard, Go!, plus a Golden Books retelling of its first evolution. It's in the English Pokérap, flies Ed Sheeran home in the Celestial video, topped the Generation I vote in the 2020 Pokémon of the Year poll, and in 1999 even turned up as a gold-plated card in a Burger King promotion.

Manga

Pokémon Pocket MonstersGreen · PM001 'Introducing the Pokémon Clefairy!!' / volume 1 (as Charmander); a Charizard from PM005 'Search For The Mirage Pokémon Mew!!' · 1996In Kosaku Anakubo's slapstick comedy, Green's Charmander can't be bothered with Charmeleon: it jumps straight to Charizard during the hunt for Mew. It is a sly, scrappy rival to Red's Clefairy (it scorched Clefairy's tail during its very first test at Professor Oak's lab), and Clefairy's gag moves even beat it at the Pokémon League. It also holds the series record for devolving, shrinking back into a Charmander more often than any other Pokémon in the manga.
Pokémon Adventures PS027, 'Kalling Kadabra', the first chapter with Blue's Charizard
Pokémon AdventuresBlue · PS001 'A Glimpse of the Glow' / volume 1 (as Charmander); first seen as Charizard in PS027 'Kalling Kadabra' / volume 2 · 1997Red's rival has had his Charmander since the very first chapter, where it takes on Mew. By the time it is first seen as a Charizard, it is flying Blue over the walls into Saffron City, and it is Blue's first pick for his Pokémon League showdown with Red, where Saur narrowly beats it. Later arcs see it master Blast Burn on Ultima's training course (PS276), get turned to stone by Sird and, in the X & Y arc, Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard Y (PS589) to defeat Xerosic alongside X's Mega Charizard X.
Pokémon Adventures PS589, 'Charizard Transforms'
Pokémon AdventuresX (Salamè) · PS552 'They Have a Flare for a Li'l Kanga-Napping' (as Charmander); evolves in PS589 'Charizard Transforms' / volume 61Salamè starts out as Professor Sycamore's runaway Charmander, which naps in a flowerbed and accidentally sets it alight, before ending up with X, who names it after Charmander's French name, Salamèche. Dozy, easy-going and full of self-doubt about Mega Evolution, it finally evolves into Charizard in PS589 and Mega Evolves into Mega Charizard X, keeping its Charizardite X safe at the tip of its tail, to beat Xerosic together with Blue's Mega Charizard Y.
Pokémon Adventures (Sun & Moon arc)Kiawe · PASM37 'Finale!! The Battle Against the Other Dimension!'Kiawe's Ride Charizard has a cameo in the Sun & Moon finale, carrying Kiawe as he waves goodbye to Sun after a day of delivering packages.
Pokémon Adventures (Sword & Shield arc)Leon · PASS02 'Crackle!! Practice Battle'The Champion's partner makes its entrance in the humblest way possible, helping Leon herd a flock of Wooloo. On the Darkest Day it battles rampaging Dynamax Pokémon and then joins other Galar Trainers' Pokémon against Eternatus itself (PASS26), which beats it easily, and does so again in PASS41.
The Electric Tale of PikachuAsh · ET08 'You Gotta Have Friends' / volume 2 (as Charmander); a Charizard by ET12 'Welcome to the Big Leagues' · 1998Toshihiro Ono's grittier take on the anime. Ash's Charmander debuts by setting him on fire, and by the 88th Pokémon League it is a Charizard that will only obey with the help of a special flare. In The Indigo Finals (ET13) it goes berserk against Ritchie's Charizard, so savagely that Ash recalls it and forfeits the match. Back on side by the Orange League final (ET18), it battles Drake's Dragonite bravely but loses.
Pokémon ZenshoSatoshi · PZ01 'Prologue: Pallet Town' / volume 1 (as Charmander); evolves into Charizard in PZ08 'Cinnabar Island' · 1998Satoshi's Charmander saves him from an angry Pidgey and becomes his first partner, beating Shigeru's Squirtle in its very first battle. It evolves after defeating Blaine's Arcanine, flies Blaine to the Seafoam Islands to catch Articuno, and at the Indigo Plateau beats Lance's Dragonite and Shigeru's Blastoise to make Satoshi Champion.
Mirage Pokémon: Lugia's Explosive Birth (movie manga)AshIn the manga of The Power of One, Ash sends Charizard out with Squirtle and Bulbasaur to free the legendary birds from their prisons.
Genesect and the Legend Awakened (movie manga)AshCharizard is back in the team Ash sends out in Pokémon Hills.
I Choose You! (movie manga)AshHere Cross gets his Charmander from Professor Oak, then abandons it, and Ash and Verity find it in the rain. With Ash it beats a Jigglypuff and evolves into Charmeleon, loses to Cross's Incineroar, and then evolves into Charizard in the rematch to win. When Marshadow's army attacks, it shields Cross from a Lycanroc.
Pocket Monsters the Movie: I Choose You! RemixAsh · ICYR3Ash's Charmeleon drives off three Nidoking with Flamethrower at Mount Tensei, then evolves into Charizard on the brink of defeat against Cross's Incineroar and wins with Seismic Toss.
Ash & PikachuAsh · SP33 'Off To The Battle Frontier!!' / volume 6Charizard, away training, is thrilled to see Ash again and takes on Noland's Articuno. Outpaced at first, it learns to read where Articuno will strike next and wins, earning Ash the Knowledge Symbol.
Pokémon Battle FrontierRald · CBF3 'Battle Between Student and Master!'Former Champion Rald, mentor to the hero Enta, uses Charizard to beat Mitsuki's Shroomish without taking a scratch and Enta's Zangoose in their last practice battle, though a Milotic gets the better of it.

Charizard trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Charizard such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Charizard is fire-starting wordplay at its simplest: char, to scorch something black, welded to lizard – a neat fit for a creature whose design leans on the reptiles that inspired Europe's dragon legends. The Japanese name Lizardon (Rizādon) grows that same lizard into something mightier, adding either 'dragon' or -don, the ending of so many prehistoric animals' scientific names, from the Ancient Greek for 'tooth'. Abroad, the dragon is never far away: French Dracaufeu joins the Latin draco to the alarm cry 'Au feu!' ('Fire!'), German Glurak blends Glut (embers) and Drache with possibly a dash of Rakete (rocket), Korean Rizamon is a 'lizard monster' and the Chinese Pēnhuǒlóng is simply the 'fire-breathing dragon'.

Design origins

Atsuko Nishida designed Charizard along with Charmander and Charmeleon – and, years later, Mega Charizard X – and she has named it her favourite Pokémon. The big influence is the European dragon, the winged, fire-breathing beast of folklore, blended with real lizards, dinosaurs and the mythical salamander that the whole family draws on. Mega Charizard X leans all the way into the dragon idea, finally making it a Dragon type, with a black hide, blue flames and blue-tipped shoulder spikes, while Mega Charizard Y goes for sleek speed: three horns, little wings on its wrists and a longer tail flame. Gigantamax Charizard swaps its wings for sheets of fire and walks on its toes, a diamond pattern blazing across its belly. One early English name for the Flame Pokémon was 'Charizr', and in Red and Green it appears to be holding a fireball, a hint that it can shape flames with its hands.

  2. Charizard and Typhlosion have identical base stats – the same 534 total, spread exactly the same way – and so do their pre-evolutions.
  3. Like Mewtwo, Charizard has two Mega Evolutions – and both pairs follow the same pattern: the X form changes type and hits physically, while the Y form keeps its type and leans on special power.
  4. It was the first fully evolved first partner to get a Gigantamax form, and the only one available in Sword and Shield's base game.
  5. In the base game of Sword and Shield, Charizard is the only first partner from outside Galar to make the Galar Pokédex.
  6. No Pokémon is used by more Champions: four of them battle with a Charizard.
  7. Charizard is the only Pokémon outside the Alola Pokédex to serve as a Ride Pokémon in Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon – Charizard Glide flew you between islands anyway.
  8. Unova's Driftveil Drawbridge is nicknamed 'Charizard Bridge' for its beauty and elegance.
  9. Until Generation VI, Charizard shared its cry with Rhyhorn. The old cry was updated and handed to Mega Charizard Y.
