Every so often the Pokémon TCG steps off the main-expansion treadmill and drops a themed “special set” — and in September 2018, Dragon Majesty was exactly that. Seventy cards built almost entirely around one of the game’s most beloved and most awkward types: Dragons. It’s small, focused, and to this day one of the more charming detours of the Sun & Moon era.
The quirk everyone remembers is how you actually got the cards. Dragon Majesty famously never received a standard booster box. Packs were tucked exclusively into special products — the Elite Trainer Box, Latias and Latios pin collections, premium boxes and GX figure boxes — which handed the set a slightly boutique, collector’s-item feel right out of the gate.
Inside, the theme is unashamedly dragon-forward: Reshiram-GX, Salamence-GX, Dragonite-GX, Kingdra-GX, Altaria-GX and White Kyurem-GX all turn up, most with gorgeous Rainbow Rare alternates. There’s even a cheeky nod to the old days — a non-GX Charizard at #3, riding in on its history with Gym Leader Blaine rather than any dragon credentials (Charizard has never actually been a Dragon-type, a joke the set leans into with the “Blaine’s Last Stand” Supporter).
Reception was warm rather than rapturous. Most players file Dragon Majesty as a fun, affordable, nicely-themed filler set — easy to complete at only 70 base cards, light on competitive impact, and carried at the top end by one genuinely great chase card. It was a set for dragon fans and set-collectors more than tournament grinders, and that’s exactly how it’s remembered.
Dragons in Majestic Flight! Noble Pokémon of wing and claw, flying high above the changing world! The Pokémon TCG: Dragon Majesty expansion brings a mighty horde of draconic Pokémon: Reshiram-GX, Salamence-GX, Dragonite-GX, and over a dozen more—including Charizard!
— Official Pokémon TCG: Dragon Majesty expansion description
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Dragon Majesty shipped in four different booster-pack artworks — Charizard, Dragonite, Reshiram and Salamence. As a special set it never got its own standalone booster box; instead the packs were folded into collector products like the Elite Trainer Box, the Latias and Latios Pin Collections and the Super-Premium Collection.
Variations between the Japanese and English language releases
Dragon Majesty is a special, Dragon-themed set rather than a numbered main-series expansion — and its roots are Japanese. It grew out of Dragon Storm (SM6a), a compact 59-card release that landed in Japan on April 6th, 2018. When the idea came West on September 7th, 2018 it was expanded to 78 cards (70 numbered plus 8 secret rares), pulling the whole thing together as a one-off Dragon showcase.
Because it’s a special set, there were no accompanying theme decks in either region. The headliners made the trip intact: a striking Charizard, Dragonite-GX and White Kyurem-GX anchor the Dragon roster, Zinnia gets a gorgeous Full Art nod to the Hoenn games, and Ultra Necrozma-GX returns as the set’s gold-bordered chase card.

Sky-Scorching Light-GX — You can use this attack only if the total of both players’ remaining Prize cards is 6 or less. Put 6 damage counters on each of your opponent’s Pokémon. (You can’t use more than 1 GX attack in a game.) Pokémon-GX rule: When your Pokémon-GX is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards. |

Other Cards & Promos
Dragon Majesty didn’t just live in booster packs. Because the set was sold almost entirely through special products, a whole run of SM Black Star Promos rode along inside its collection boxes, pin tins and blisters. None of these count toward the 70-card set, but they’re very much part of the Dragon Majesty family — and a fun little sub-hunt for collectors.
The two Pin Collections each shipped with a matching foil promo: Latias (SM135) in the Latias Pin Collection and Latios (SM136) in the Latios Pin Collection. The premium Dragon Majesty Super-Premium Collection was the showpiece, packing Rainbow Rare versions of Dragonite-GX (SM156) and Kingdra-GX (SM155) next to an oversized jumbo Ultra Necrozma-GX. Rounding out the range, Ultra Necrozma-GX (SM126), Naganadel-GX (SM125), Reshiram-GX (SM137) and Zekrom-GX (SM138) all turned up as foil promos across the various Dragon Majesty blisters and boxes.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Ultra Necrozma-GX — #78/70 (Gold Secret Rare)
The undisputed crown jewel of the set. Based on “the Blinding One” from Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, this gold Secret Rare is the card everyone chased — and, unusually, it was also the set’s best competitive card, making it a rare double threat for collectors and grinders alike.
The Rainbow Rares — #71–74
Reshiram-GX, Altaria-GX, Salamence-GX and White Kyurem-GX round out the textured Rainbow “Hyper” Rare tier. These pastel, sparkle-finished alternates are the visual highlight of any Dragon Majesty binder page.
Zinnia — #70/70 (Full Art)
The full-art Supporter closing out the numbered set. Zinnia — the dragon-obsessed antagonist of the Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire Delta Episode — is a fan-favourite pull and one of the prettier trainer cards of the era.
Charizard — #3/70 (Rare Holo)
Not a GX, not a Dragon-type, and yet perennially in demand simply because it’s Charizard. Its inclusion (via Blaine) is half the reason casual buyers remember Dragon Majesty at all.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Dragon Majesty was never built to reshape the metagame, but a few cards pulled real weight:
Lance ◊ — #61/70 (Prism Star)
A powerhouse Supporter that let you drop Stage 2 Dragons straight from your deck after a Knock Out, smoothing over the type’s notoriously clunky set-up. The engine that made Dragon decks actually function.
Dragonite-GX — #37/70
A bulky Stage 2 attacker that hit hard for its cost, especially once Dragon-type support smoothed out its mixed Energy requirements. The closest thing the set had to a reliable heavy hitter.
Beyond those, Ultra Necrozma-GX (above) paired with Malamar’s Energy acceleration to become one of the defining Psychic decks of the 2018–19 season, and Victini ◊ (#7) found a home in Expanded Fire builds.
Trivia & Pop Culture
- A rare “no booster box” set. Dragon Majesty is one of the few English expansions never sold as a traditional booster box — packs came only through Elite Trainer Boxes, pin collections and premium boxes, which shaped its collector aura.
- The set symbol is a dragon. The little expansion symbol is the letter “D” stylised into a dragon — a one-off flourish to match the theme.
- A Charizard that isn’t a dragon. Charizard headlines a Dragon set despite never being a Dragon-type in the games, sneaking in through its long association with Gym Leader Blaine.
- Dragon-master fan service. The set stacks its Trainer line-up with legendary Dragon specialists: Lance, the Kanto/Johto Champion, as a Prism Star, and Zinnia from the Hoenn remakes.
- A chase card that was also a deck. Ultra Necrozma-GX became both the most wanted collectible and the heart of a top-tier tournament deck — a combination most special-set headliners never manage.
