Pokémon Card VS half-deck packPokémon Card★VS is a Japan-only expansion released on 19 July 2001, and it’s one of the most unusual sets the Pokémon TCG ever produced. It was the sole main release of the short-lived VS Era, sitting between the Neo era and the Pokémon Web / e-Card sets, and it built its entire 151-card roster around a single idea: the Gym Leaders, Elite Four and rivals of Johto and Kanto.

Every card belongs to a specific trainer and shows off that trainer’s signature Pokémon — Falkner’s Skarmory, Whitney’s Miltank, Morty’s Gengar, Jasmine’s Steelix, Clair’s Kingdra, Karen’s Umbreon and dozens more. The cards are even ordered the way you meet their owners in Gold, Silver and Crystal: the eight Johto Gym Leaders first, then the Kanto Gym Leaders, the Johto Elite Four, Team Rocket, and finally the Champion, Lance. Each leader’s cards went to a different illustrator, so the set reads like a gallery of guest artists — Atsuko Nishida, Kyoko Umemoto and Mitsuhiro Arita among them.

The Pokémon Company pitched VS as “a separate and simpler game” from the main TCG. It was sold as chunky 30-card boosters and three random Half Decks — Fighting/Psychic, Water/Fire and Grass/Lightning — the idea being that you combined two halves into a playable deck. It also brought in brand-new mechanics: Technical Machine cards that clip onto a Pokémon to grant a set attack, the Burned Special Condition, and a tidied-up classification of status conditions.

For Japanese collectors it’s a set of firsts, too: the first Japanese expansion with a proper card-numbering system, the first to include Secret cards, and the first to carry the 1st Edition stamp. A genuine one-off — a whole set that turned the region’s Gym Leaders into a card game of their own, and never left Japan.

A Separate, Simpler Game

Pokémon Card★VS turns the region’s Gym Leaders, Elite Four and rivals into a deck of their own — pick your trainers, combine two Half Decks, and battle head to head.

— Based on The Pokémon Company’s billing of Pokémon Card★VS, 2001

Print Versions & Collectors Info

VS skipped the usual booster-and-theme-deck packaging. Alongside its 30-card boosters — each holding twelve Pokémon, four Trainers, two Technical Machines, a stack of Energy and a holo Special Energy — it shipped as three random Half Decks, each pairing two types. Combine any two halves and you had a deck ready to battle.

Other Cards

VS’s big mechanical idea was the Technical Machine. Instead of learning attacks the usual way, a Pokémon could have a TM card clipped onto it and use the attack printed there for as long as it stayed attached — a neat nod to the games’ TMs, and unique to this set.

Falkner's TM 01 (103/141)

Falkner’s TM 01 (103/141)

The set’s headline mechanic in action. Attach this Technical Machine to one of your Pokémon and it gains the attack printed on the card — here, a Falkner-flavoured Flying move.

Pryce's TM 01 (115/141)

Pryce’s TM 01 (115/141)

Another Technical Machine, tied to Pryce’s ice team. Clip it on and the holder can use its listed attack until the TM leaves play.

Karen's TM 01 (125/141)

Karen’s TM 01 (125/141)

One of the Elite Four’s Technical Machines, lending a Karen-flavoured Dark attack to whichever Pokémon it’s slotted onto.

Rocket's TM 01 (127/141)

Rocket’s TM 01 (127/141)

Team Rocket’s take on the Technical Machine — the same plug-in-an-attack idea, dressed in villainous colours.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

VS is a chase-card set for collectors of vintage Japanese cardboard, and its value clusters around the Elite Four’s Karen and Team Rocket’s stolen legendaries.

Karen's Umbreon (91/141)

Karen’s Umbreon (91/141)

The most coveted card in the set. Karen’s Umbreon is a VS-era icon — a moody, beautifully illustrated holo that tops most want-lists and carries the whole set’s reputation.

Karen's Tyranitar (90/141)

Karen’s Tyranitar (90/141)

Karen’s pseudo-legendary in holo form — a heavyweight fan-favourite and one of the standout Dark-type cards of the era.

Rocket's Suicune (96/141)

Rocket’s Suicune (96/141)

One of Team Rocket’s stolen legendary beasts. A gorgeous holo Suicune that ranks among the set’s most sought-after chase cards.

Rocket's Entei (95/141)

Rocket’s Entei (95/141)

The fire beast of Rocket’s legendary trio — a striking holo and the natural partner to Raikou and Suicune.

Rocket's Raikou (94/141)

Rocket’s Raikou (94/141)

The electric beast of the trio, completing Team Rocket’s roaming-legendary set in holo form.

Jasmine's Steelix (32/141)

Jasmine’s Steelix (32/141)

Jasmine’s signature steel serpent, and one of the cleaner-looking holos in the Johto half of the set.

Bugsy's Scizor (13/141)

Bugsy’s Scizor (13/141)

An early holo and a long-time favourite — Bugsy’s Scizor is a mainstay of any VS collection.

Rocket's Wobbuffet (93/141)

Rocket’s Wobbuffet (93/141)

A quirky, popular Rocket holo that has become a surprisingly chased little card in its own right.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

VS was billed as a simpler game, but a few fully-evolved heavy hitters still stood out — most of them belonging to the Champion and the Dragon-master.

Lance's Dragonite (100/141)

Lance’s Dragonite (100/141)

The Champion’s ace. Lance’s Dragonite is one of the biggest hitters in the VS game — a fully-evolved dragon built to close out battles.

Lance's Charizard (97/141)

Lance’s Charizard (97/141)

A borrowed Kanto heavyweight in Lance’s line-up — high-powered, and exactly the kind of finisher the format was built around.

Clair's Kingdra (52/141)

Clair’s Kingdra (52/141)

Clair’s signature dragon: a tough, well-rounded attacker that anchors the Water/Dragon side of her deck.

Trivia

  • Pokémon Card★VS was released only in Japan and has no English equivalent — the sole main set of the short-lived VS Era.
  • It was the first Japanese expansion to use a card-numbering system, the first to include Secret cards, and the first to carry a 1st Edition stamp.
  • Every card belongs to a Gym Leader, Elite Four member, rival or Team Rocket, ordered by the sequence you battle them in Gold, Silver and Crystal — ending with the Champion, Lance.
  • It introduced Technical Machine cards (attach one to grant a set attack) and the Burned Special Condition, and formally classified the game’s status conditions for the first time.
  • It was sold as 30-card boosters and three random Half Decks — Fighting/Psychic, Water/Fire and Grass/Lightning — designed to be combined two at a time into a full deck.
  • Team Rocket’s cards include the roaming legendary beasts Raikou, Entei and Suicune, plus a fan-favourite Wobbuffet.
  • Each Gym Leader’s cards were handed to a different illustrator — Atsuko Nishida, Kyoko Umemoto and Mitsuhiro Arita among them — while the Technical Machine Trainer cards were drawn by “Big Mama” Tagawa.
