By late 2007 the Diamond & Pearl era was hitting its stride, and Secret Wonders — the third English expansion of the series — leaned hard into the idea printed right there in its name. This was a set built around hidden tricks: a fresh wave of Poké-Powers and Poké-Bodies, two new Pokémon LV.X to chase, and a Trainer line-up designed to spring surprises on your opponent. At 132 cards it was one of the meatier releases of the period, blending brand-new Sinnoh Pokémon with a heavy dose of returning Kanto and Johto favourites.
Released on November 7th, 2007, Secret Wonders was the English counterpart to Japan’s darkly-themed “Shining Darkness” (ひかる闇). The roster is a nostalgia trip as much as a competitive tool box: all three Kanto starter lines are here, the Johto legendary beasts Entei, Raikou and Suicune prowl the higher rarities, and tower guardians Lugia and Ho-Oh share space with Mew. Two theme decks, Lavaflow and Powerhouse, gave newcomers a ready-made way in.
But the set’s real legacy is written on two cards that share a single family tree — and that is where we will start.
Uncover the Secret, Discover the Wonder
Make your opponents wonder what your secret power is! In Secret Wonders, you’ll discover new Pokémon that will give your battles a powerful twist. Plus, with more exciting Pokémon LV.X, more strategy-changing Poké-Powers and Poké-Bodies, and brand-new Trainer cards, your best-kept secret will be surprise! The wonders never cease when you play the Pokémon TCG: Diamond & Pearl—Secret Wonders expansion!
— official Secret Wonders expansion blurb
One Kirlia, Two Champions: The Rise of Gardevoir & Gallade
Ralts might be the most unassuming Pokémon in the whole expansion, but the little Feeling Pokémon evolves into Kirlia — and from there the family splits two ways. Take Kirlia to Gardevoir and you get one of the most cerebral cards of the era; take it to Gallade instead and you get a blade-swinging bruiser. Secret Wonders put both at the top of the same evolution line, and competitive players did the clever thing: they ran them together.
Gardevoir (7) was the brains of the operation. Its Psychic Lock attack hit for 60 and then slammed the door on your opponent’s Poké-Powers for a turn — an enormous swing in a format where so many of the best cards leaned on Powers to function. On top of that, its Telepass Poké-Power let Gardevoir reach into the opponent’s discard pile and re-use a Supporter they had already spent, effectively turning their best plays against them.
Gallade (6) brought the muscle. Psychic Cut let you flip your own Prize cards face-up for a hefty damage bonus — the more you gambled, the harder it hit — while Sonic Blade piled on damage and then forced a switch, dragging up whatever your opponent least wanted in the Active spot. One Kirlia, and you could branch into either threat depending on the match-up in front of you.
Together they became “Gardevoir/Gallade” — G&G to its fans — one of the defining decks of the 2007–2008 season and a fixture at that year’s Pokémon World Championships. The Gardevoir LV.X (131) topper only sweetened the pot: Teleportation pivoted it around the board for free, and Bring Down could outright Knock Out whichever Pokémon on the field had the fewest HP left. The LV.X mechanic itself had arrived just two sets earlier in Diamond & Pearl, and here it found one of its most iconic homes.
Gardevoir (7/132)
The engine of the legendary Gardevoir/Gallade deck. Psychic Lock shut off your opponent’s Poké-Powers for a turn, while Telepass let it re-use Supporters straight out of their discard pile.
Gallade (6/132)
Gardevoir’s aggressive twin from the same Kirlia line. Psychic Cut scaled its damage up for every Prize card you flipped face-up, and Sonic Blade forced your opponent to switch.
Print Versions
Secret Wonders boosters came in four different wrapper designs, each fronted by one of the set’s standout Pokémon — Gallade, Weavile, Honchkrow and Roserade. Whichever art caught your eye off the shelf, the pack inside had the same shot at those LV.X chase cards.

The LV.X Chase Cards
Every Diamond & Pearl set hid a pair of ultra-rare Pokémon LV.X at the very top of the rarity ladder, and Secret Wonders was no exception. These two sat at numbers 131 and 132, just beyond the main set — the cards every booster box was really chasing.
Gardevoir LV.X (131/132)
The set’s marquee chase card and the crown on the Gardevoir/Gallade deck. Teleportation pivoted it around the field for free, and Bring Down could instantly Knock Out whichever Pokémon on the board had the fewest HP remaining.
Honchkrow LV.X (132/132)
A darker finisher. Feint Attack dealt 40 to any of your opponent’s Pokémon while ignoring Weakness, Resistance and other effects, and Darkness Wing let a knockout fish any card straight back out of your discard pile.
Notable Cards
Beyond the headline evolution line, Secret Wonders quietly reshaped the Trainer landscape — and introduced a villainous team fresh from the Sinnoh games.
Team Galactic’s Mars (126/132)
Team Galactic’s TCG debut. This Supporter drew you two cards, then blindly sent one card from your opponent’s hand to the bottom of their deck — the Sinnoh villains menacing players in cards as well as on the DS.
Roseanne’s Research (125/132)
A quiet consistency staple. It let you search your deck for a flexible mix of basic Energy and Basic Pokémon, smoothing out setups for half the decks in the format.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Secret Wonders is a Legendary-heavy 132-card set whose value comes from low-population graded holos, not modern hits. Charizard, Lugia and Ho-Oh reach four- to five-figure sums in PSA 10, while its only two Lv.X cards, Gardevoir and Honchkrow, remain comparatively affordable chase pieces.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Secret Wonders reshaped 2007-2008 Modified by delivering the Gardevoir/Gallade ‘GG’ engine plus the era’s two defining search Supporters, Roseanne’s Research and Bebe’s Search. GG went on to dominate the format through the 2008 World Championships.
Gardevoir Lv.X (GG Toolbox / Lv.X)
Leveling up Gardevoir added HP and a free-repositioning ‘Teleportation’ Poke-Power, giving the GG deck the resilience and flexibility to maintain its lock.
Trivia
- Japan’s version, “Shining Darkness” (ひかる闇), launched back on July 5th, 2007 — four months ahead of the English release.
- The set leans into regional formes: both the East Sea and West Sea variants of Shellos and Gastrodon appear as separate cards.
- Burmy and its evolution Wormadam each show up in all three cloaks — Plant, Sandy and Trash.
- Six different Unown (S, K, N, O, X and Z) are scattered through the set for letter-hunting collectors.
- Team Galactic’s Mars is the first card to carry the Team Galactic name in the Pokémon TCG, with more of the team following in later Diamond & Pearl sets.
