151 booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—151 is a special expansion released in English on 22 September 2023 that reimagines the original 151 Kanto Pokémon — from Bulbasaur to Mew — through the modern Scarlet & Violet card frame. Built as a nostalgic love letter to the first generation, it became one of the most popular and sought-after sets of the entire era.

Every one of the original 151 appears in National Pokédex order, headlined by the Kanto starters as Pokémon ex — Venusaur ex, Charizard ex and Blastoise ex — alongside Mew ex, the set’s elusive mascot. Beyond the numbered 165 cards, a deep run of Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares reimagines classic Pokémon in gorgeous full-scene art.

151 sold in a distinctive line-up — Booster Bundles, an Elite Trainer Box and the premium Ultra Premium Collection rather than standard booster boxes — and demand ran so high that sealed product sold out repeatedly and still holds a strong premium today.

Gotta Catch ’Em All! Team up with Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, and witness a brand-new dawn in Kanto! With this new day comes a new chance to track down old friends, make new partners, and capture every last one of the original 151. Discover the extraordinary Venusaur ex, Charizard ex, and Blastoise ex in special cards with captivating illustrations, and explore the cities and countryside of a reinvigorated land—you might even find the elusive Mew ex in your travels. New adventures will unfold and new horizons will be revealed in the Scarlet & Violet—151 expansion!

Set Highlights: The Original 151, Reimagined

151 set out to capture the first generation in a single modern set. Every Kanto Pokémon returns in Pokédex order, the three starters and Mew headline as Pokémon ex, and the set’s illustration rares turned classic Pokémon into some of the most admired card art of the era.

The three Kanto starters anchor the set as Pokémon ex, each with a hard-hitting attack and a matching Special Illustration Rare. Mew ex, numbered fittingly at 151, is the set’s mascot — its Genome Hacking attack copies a move from the opponent’s Active Pokémon, and its elusive full-art versions became instant collector grails.

What set 151 apart was its art. Dozens of the original Pokémon received brand-new Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares set in the towns and countryside of Kanto — a nostalgic, poster-quality run that drove much of the set’s enormous popularity.

151 skipped the usual booster-box release and instead arrived in a collector-focused line-up. Booster packs came in Booster Bundles of six, joined by an Elite Trainer Box, a Binder Collection, a Poster Collection, and the premium Ultra Premium Collection built around Mew and the Kanto starters. Scarcity at launch made every one of these a hot ticket.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

The English 151 is built on the Japanese set Pokémon Card 151 (sv2a), released on 16 June 2023. Both share the same idea — the complete original 151 in Pokédex order, fronted by Mew — and the English version reorders a handful of cards and adds its own secret rares to reach a 165-card main set (207 with secret rares).

The Japanese set was every bit as hard to find at launch. Collectors after the original printing chase the Pokémon Card 151 pack and sealed box.

Promos

151 was backed by a deep run of promo cards, nearly all of them original Kanto Pokémon in the SVP Black Star Promo series. They were handed out through the Elite Trainer Box, the Ultra Premium Collection, blisters, preorder campaigns and Play! Pokémon Prize Packs. The most prized are Snorlax (SVP 051), Mewtwo (SVP 052) and Mew ex (SVP 053) — the three special illustrations Japanese fans could pull from the main set, which reached English collectors only as promos (see the Trivia note below).

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Charizard ex — 199/165 (Special Illustration Rare)

Charizard ex — 199/165 (Special Illustration Rare)

The undisputed chase card of the set. Its full-art scene of Charizard over the Kanto skies made it one of the most valuable and widely chased cards of the whole Scarlet & Violet era — the card most people opened 151 hoping to hit.

Mew ex — 205/165 (Hyper Rare)

Mew ex — 205/165 (Hyper Rare)

The all-gold Mew ex sits at the very top of the set’s pull order. As the shimmering gold treatment of the set’s own mascot, it commands a serious premium and caps off the 151 rarity ladder.

Erika’s Invitation — 203/165 (Special Illustration Rare)

Erika’s Invitation — 203/165 (Special Illustration Rare)

One of the most beloved Trainer illustrations in the modern game. Its warm full-scene art made Erika’s Invitation a runaway collector favourite and one of the most valuable Supporter cards of the era.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Mew ex — 151/165

Mew ex — 151/165

The set’s standout for play. Restart refills your hand back up to three cards, and Genome Hacking lets Mew ex borrow an attack from the opponent’s Active Pokémon — a flexible, disruptive attacker that turns the opponent’s own firepower against them.

Charizard ex — 6/165

Charizard ex — 6/165

A hard-hitting Fire attacker. Brave Wing does more the moment Charizard ex is damaged, and Explosive Vortex delivers a huge 330 for three Energy — a budget-friendly finisher that gave Fire decks a heavy punch.

Blastoise ex — 9/165

Blastoise ex — 9/165

A durable Water anchor. Solid Shell shrugs off 30 damage from every attack, while Twin Cannons scales with the Water Energy attached — a tanky ex that could soak hits and hit back hard.

Trivia

  • Mew ex is numbered 151/165 — a deliberate nod to Mew’s place as #151 in the National Pokédex and to the set’s celebration of the original 151.
  • Unusually for a modern set, the cards are laid out in National Pokédex order, from Bulbasaur (1) through Mew (151), rather than being grouped by type.
  • 151 marked the return of Kadabra to the Pokémon TCG after roughly two decades — its previous card had appeared all the way back in Skyridge (2003). The long absence stemmed from a dispute with illusionist Uri Geller, who objected to the card’s likeness before relenting, and the Japanese Pokémon Card 151 finally brought Kadabra back.
  • A single pack can open a full evolutionary line — for example Bulbasaur, Ivysaur and Venusaur together — in place of its usual reverse holo and rare. Collectors nicknamed these “demigod packs.”
  • The Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese printings include mirror-holofoil cards patterned with Poké Balls and Master Balls that the English set doesn’t have.
  • At English retail the set launched without a standard 36-pack booster box, arriving instead as Booster Bundles, an Elite Trainer Box and the premium Ultra Premium Collection.
  • Demand massively outstripped supply: sealed product sold out repeatedly, chase-card prices spiked whenever fans feared it going out of print, and The Pokémon Company reprinted the set several times — a rarity for a modern release.
  • The Japanese Pokémon Card 151 (sv2a) runs to 210 cards against the English 207. The three extras are the special “Art Rare” illustrations of Snorlax and Mewtwo and the Special Art Rare Mew ex. English fans still got all three of these exact illustrations — not out of booster packs, but as SVP Black Star Promos packed with 151 products: Snorlax (SVP 051) came in the Elite Trainer Box, while Mewtwo (SVP 052) and Mew ex (SVP 053) were in the Ultra Premium Collection (both shown in the Promos section above).
