EX Crystal Guardians is the fourteenth expansion of the EX Series, released on August 30th, 2006 and known in Japan as Miracle Crystal. A tight 100-card set, it heads to a mysterious crystal-strewn island near Holon under the wonderfully dramatic tagline “Only the best shall pass the Crystal Guardians!”
It’s a Hoenn-heavy set with a strong ex line: the region’s starters return as Blaziken ex, Sceptile ex δ and Swampert ex, joined by the weather legends Groudon ex and Kyogre ex and a nifty Jirachi ex. Two Gold Stars crown the chase — the shiny Alakazam Star and Celebi Star.
And it’s a genuinely important set for one quiet reason: it was the last hurrah for dual-type δ Delta Species, the boldest version of the type-swapping gimmick. Fan favourites like Charizard δ turn up recast in strange new colours one final time.
Unusually, it shipped with three theme decks — Green Cyclone, Storm Surge and Earth Shower. Small but well-formed, Crystal Guardians is a satisfying set with a real place in the timeline — as we’ll see next.
Only the best shall pass the Crystal Guardians!
Journey to a mysterious island of living crystal and prove your team against its guardians.
— Original Pokémon USA promotional copy, 2006
The Last of the Dual-Type Deltas
A year earlier, EX Delta Species introduced one of the game’s cleverest ideas: δ Delta Species Pokémon, familiar creatures given completely unexpected types by the experiments of the Holon region. At its boldest, the gimmick let a single Pokémon carry two off-types at once — a Charizard that was suddenly Lightning and Metal, say — and EX Crystal Guardians is where that dual-type version of the idea took its final bow.
It sends the concept off in style. The Kanto favourites are back in disguise one last time — here Charizard δ arrives recoloured as a Lightning type, alongside a recast Blastoise and a Psychic-typed Sceptile ex δ — a final parade of “wait, that’s not the right colour” double-takes that made Delta Species so much fun.
Delta Species itself wasn’t quite finished — the very next set would keep the δ branding going — but never again would a card wear two off-types at once. That makes Crystal Guardians a quiet little milestone: the closing chapter of the most experimental type-bending the classic card game ever tried, wrapped up on a glittering crystal island. Only the best shall pass, indeed.
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Boosters came in four artwork variants — Delcatty, Jirachi, Charizard and Blaziken — each holding nine cards. Unusually, three theme decks shipped alongside the set: Green Cyclone, Storm Surge and Earth Shower.

Once during your turn (before your attack), you may search your discard pile for 3 Energy cards and attach them to your Pokémon in any way you like. If you do, your turn ends. This power can’t be used if Swampert ex is affected by a Special Condition. Ultra Pump 60+ |

Other Cards
The Delta Species send-off shows up beyond the ex slots too — recast Kanto icons and handy support cards fill out the set.
Blastoise δ (2/100)
The Kanto water starter, recoloured as a Fighting type in one of the set’s dual-type Delta Species — exactly the kind of “that’s the wrong colour!” twist the gimmick was built on.
Delcatty ex (91/100)
A support-focused ex whose draw power kept decks flowing — unglamorous, but a genuinely useful engine that saw plenty of play.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
The chase is topped by two Gold Stars, with the beloved Charizard δ and a strong Hoenn ex line close behind.
Alakazam Star (99/100)
A Gold Star of the psychic master — shiny, scarce, and a headline chase card of the set.
Celebi Star (100/100)
The mythical time-traveller as a Gold Star, closing the checklist — collected as a pair with Alakazam Star.
Charizard δ (4/100)
The fan-favourite Delta Species Charizard, recast as a Lightning type — one of the most sought-after δ cards and a highlight of the whole experiment.
Groudon ex (93/100)
The continent Pokémon as an ex, tougher the less Energy it carries — a marquee Hoenn legendary.
Kyogre ex (95/100)
Groudon’s rival, retreating for free when lightly loaded — the other half of the weather duo and a natural pair.
Jirachi ex (94/100)
The wish-granting mythical as an ex, discounted against big evolved threats — popular and playable.
Blaziken ex (90/100)
The Hoenn fire-fighter returns as an ex — a perennial starter favourite and a strong pull.
Swampert ex (98/100)
The mud-fish starter rounds out the Hoenn ex trio alongside Blaziken and Sceptile.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Crystal Guardians leaned on anti-ex tech and efficient legendaries — cards built to punish the format’s biggest threats.
Sceptile ex δ (96/100)
Its Extra Liquid Poké-Body switches off your opponent’s Pokémon-ex Poké-Powers and taxes their attacks — a brutal answer to the ex-heavy decks of the day.
Jirachi ex (94/100)
Star Light makes its attacks cheaper whenever the opponent fields an ex or a Stage 2 — a cheap, disruptive attacker that punished greedy boards.
Groudon ex (93/100)
Hard Rock shaves damage off every hit while Groudon runs light on Energy — a resilient wall that was awkward to knock out.
Kyogre ex (95/100)
Free retreat plus a discard-fuelled Hydro Shot made it a slippery, hard-hitting legendary that could reposition at will.
Trivia
- Crystal Guardians was the last set to feature dual-type δ Delta Species — Pokémon carrying two off-types at once. Delta Species branding continued one more set, but never again with dual typing.
- The Kanto starters return recast, headlined by the beloved Charizard δ as a Lightning type.
- Two Gold Stars crown the chase: the shiny Alakazam Star and Celebi Star.
- Unusually, the set shipped with three theme decks — Green Cyclone, Storm Surge and Earth Shower — where most sets have two.
- It’s set on a mysterious crystal-strewn island near Holon, giving the “Crystal Guardians” name its dramatic, gatekeeping tagline.
- Its Japanese title translates to Miracle Crystal, and the Hoenn starters all appear as Pokémon-ex (Blaziken, Sceptile δ and Swampert).
