01Overview

Meet Ivysaur

Everything you need to know about the Seed Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Meet Ivysaur, the Seed Pokémon in full bud. It is the Grass- and Poison-type middle stage of the Bulbasaur family and the holder of National Pokédex #0002, arriving when Bulbasaur reaches level 16 and sticking around until level 32. For a great many players, that first flash of light was their very first taste of evolution.

The difference is all on its back. Bulbasaur's tidy bulb has swollen into a fat pink bud on a short brown trunk, cradled by leafy fronds like a miniature palm tree. It is heavy work: once the bulb grows large, Ivysaur can no longer rear up on its hind legs, so its legs and body have grown thick and sturdy to carry the load. Underneath it is the same frog-like quadruped, with mottled blue-green skin, pointed ears, narrow red eyes and three claws on each foot.

“There is a plant bulb on its back. When it absorbs nutrients, the bulb is said to blossom into a large flower.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed, X & Legends: Z-A · 1996

Ivysaur lives by the sun. Sunlight makes it stronger and feeds the bud, and as the big day approaches it spends more and more time stretched out in bright patches of light. It is a creature of the grasslands, and it can sit so still while it photosynthesises that researchers cannot agree whether it is awake or dozing. Sunshine matters so much that, in the anime, a whole crowd of Ivysaur and Bulbasaur once climbed an unfinished Gym tower in Vermilion City just to bask in the light they needed to evolve.

Then comes the tell-tale sign. The bud begins to swell and a sweet scent wafts from it – a fragrant early warning that the great flower is about to open and that Venusaur is not far off. In that sense Ivysaur is the family's in-between stage in every way: no longer a seedling, not yet in bloom, and soaking up every ray it can get.

Many Trainers first met one across the battlefield: choose Squirtle in the original games and your rival's Bulbasaur comes back as an Ivysaur on the S.S. Anne and in Pokémon Tower. Fans have a soft spot for it as the awkward teenager of the line, but it has had its time in the spotlight too, fighting alongside Squirtle and Charizard as part of the Pokémon Trainer's team in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Ultimate.

How big is Ivysaur?

Ivysaur silhouette
Ivysaur1 m (3′03″)
Trainer1.60 m (5′03″)

At 1.0 m (3′03″) Ivysaur stands about as tall as a four-year-old child, and at 13.0 kg (28.7 lb) it weighs about the same as a cocker spaniel – almost double Bulbasaur, which says a lot about that bud.

Spin-offs & cameos

Super Smash Bros.

Ivysaur is the Bulbasaur family's Smash Bros. headliner. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008) made it one third of the Pokémon Trainer's team, sandwiched between Squirtle's speed and Charizard's power: Bullet Seed sprays upwards, Razor Leaf sends leaves spinning across the stage, Vine Whip doubles as a tether to snag the ledge, and its part in the Trainer's Triple Finish Final Smash is a Solar Beam. Brawl kept the Trainer on his toes – each Pokémon tired the longer it stayed out, and Ivysaur took extra knockback from Fire attacks – while the Subspace Emissary has the Trainer catch it in trophy form in The Ruins. After a trophy-only spell in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, it returned in Ultimate (2018) with no stamina to manage, faster air speed and an aimable Vine Whip that no longer leaves it helpless; the Trainer can now be female, too. In Palutena's Guidance, Pit mistakes it for Bulbasaur or Venusaur before Viridi sets him straight – 'Cute and deadly!' Grab it and you grab its bulb, even from the front. With Venusaur popping up on stages and as a Poké Ball Pokémon, and Bulbasaur as a trophy, it is the only first partner family whose every member has appeared in Smash.

Pokémon GO

Ivysaur has been in Pokémon GO since launch day on 6 July 2016. It takes 25 Bulbasaur Candy to evolve one and 100 more to reach Venusaur, and as a buddy it finds Candy every 3 km. Shiny Ivysaur arrived on 25 March 2018 with Bulbasaur's Community Day, when evolving a Shiny Bulbasaur unlocked it – and Trainers who went all the way to Venusaur that day got the exclusive Frenzy Plant. Shadow Ivysaur followed with Team GO Rocket's arrival on 22 July 2019 (a Shiny Shadow became possible on 3 March 2026), and Dynamax Ivysaur has been obtainable since 10 September 2024. It has battled in raids since late 2017, including the Evolution Event Raid Day on 7 December 2019. It also has a wardrobe: a party hat for GO's 9th Anniversary Party (1–6 July 2025) and a Pikachu visor, earned by evolving a visor-wearing Bulbasaur during Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global. Its family's Mega form, Mega Venusaur, has starred in raids since Mega Evolution arrived on 27 August 2020.

Resident

Moves

In Red and Green, Ivysaur was very much the patient middle child. It knew the same nine moves as Bulbasaur but learned each one a little later – Razor Leaf at 30 rather than 27, SolarBeam at a lofty 54 – so trainers who evolved early had a wait on their hands. Gold and Silver added Sweet Scent and Synthesis, and Diamond and Pearl beefed it up with Take Down, Double-Edge and Worry Seed, though Seed Bomb stayed stubbornly out of reach unless it came from a tutor or was learned by a still-unevolved Bulbasaur.

Sword and Shield pressed fast-forward: Vine Whip and Growth became part of Ivysaur's starting kit, Seed Bomb finally landed at level 20 and Solar Beam caps everything off at 50. Scarlet and Violet swap Double-Edge for a meaty Power Whip and slip Roar into its TM list, while Legends: Z-A works in Magical Leaf, Amnesia and Sludge Wave. And for collectors, an Ivysaur evolved from one of Generation V's event Bulbasaur keeps Frenzy Plant – a move no ordinary Ivysaur can touch.

Signature moves

GrassVine Whip

The vines come out early and stay out: a level-13 move in Red and Blue, it is part of Ivysaur's starting kit in Let's Go, Sword and Shield, and Scarlet and Violet.

GrassRazor Leaf

The one attack in every Ivysaur level-up list ever made, from Red and Green to Legends: Z-A. It has crept forward from level 30 in Red and Blue to level 12 today.

GrassSleep Powder

A double helping of dust: ever since Gold and Silver, Sleep Powder has arrived at exactly the same level as Poison Powder, so Ivysaur can pick between a snooze and a sting.

GrassSeed Bomb

The late bloomer. From Diamond and Pearl to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon only Bulbasaur learned it by levelling up, so Ivysaur needed a tutor or an early lesson. Sword and Shield finally made it a level-20 move.

GrassPower Whip

A vine with real heft: an Egg Move since HeartGold and SoulSilver and a TR in Sword and Shield, it became Ivysaur's level-45 move in Scarlet and Violet, taking Double-Edge's old slot.

GrassSolar Beam

The grand finale of every Ivysaur level-up list, arriving anywhere from level 44 (Diamond and Pearl to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon) to level 56 – where, in Let's Go, it hits for 200 power.

NormalRoar

Proof that the bud is finding its voice: Ivysaur can learn Roar by TM in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A, a trick its little Bulbasaur self can't manage.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow10 level-up · 15 TM/HM

Ivysaur only turns up by evolving Bulbasaur at level 16 – and in Red and Blue, picking Squirtle means your rival's Bulbasaur grows into one too. It learns the same moves as Bulbasaur, but from PoisonPowder onwards each one arrives a few levels later (SolarBeam at 54 rather than 48).

In HeartGold and SoulSilver you can evolve the Bulbasaur Professor Oak hands over after you beat Red, while Diamond, Pearl and Platinum have no Ivysaur of their own. In Diamond and Pearl only Bulbasaur learns Seed Bomb, so it has to be taught before evolving.

Ivysaur in the anime

Debut EP047A Chansey Operation · First major role EP051Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden · Its appearances on screen, and 7 other trainers who raised one.

Ivysaur has had an unusual anime career for one of the very first Pokémon. Ash never owned one – his Bulbasaur famously said no to evolution – so the Seed Pokémon's middle stage has done most of its blooming in other people's hands. It slipped into the series as a patient at a Pokémon clinic (EP047) before its big night in Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden (EP051), where a garden full of wild Bulbasaur evolved together under a roaring Venusaur. Two decades later Pokémon Journeys staged a sequel, as a mass outbreak of Ivysaur climbed a Vermilion City building site to soak up the sun and burst into Venusaur (JN003).

Its Trainers are a wonderfully mixed bunch. Shauna's first partner grew into a Showcase star that carried her to the Master Class semi-finals; Assunta's knocked Ash's rival Ritchie out of the Indigo Plateau Conference; Crystal's helped Gary guard a revived Aerodactyl on Sayda Island; and Jimmy, Jeremy and even James – for one disastrous exam – have all had an Ivysaur at their side. Between them they show off everything the species is about: sturdy vines, a bulb that drinks in sunlight and a Solar Beam that is always ready to go off.

Other trainers’ Ivysaur

Shauna's Ivysaur
Shauna
friend and rival of Serena (XY), Pokémon Performer
Bulbasaur → Ivysaur

First seen: XY039Summer of Discovery!
Evolved: XY090Tag Team Battle Inspiration!

Shauna's first partner from Professor Sycamore spent its Bulbasaur days at the Pokémon Summer Camp and on the Showcase stage, where its bouquet-topped bulb helped win her first Princess Key (XY060). By the time she caught up with Serena in Anistar City it had quietly grown into an Ivysaur, and it showed off its new strength in a Tag Battle, cancelling Pikachu's Electro Ball with Energy Ball and diving in to save Serena's Eevee from a Thunderbolt before the girls stopped the match to go and train (XY090). At the Anistar Showcase it was the fastest Pokémon to load a basket of Berries in the quiz round, then hoisted Shauna into the air on its vines through Flabébé's sparkling Fairy Wind – though Serena took the Princess Key (XY091). In the Gloire City Master Class it carried her all the way to the semi-finals, where a vine-whipped Fairy Wind tornado and a Solar Beam meeting Flabébé's Moonblast came up just short against Serena (XY112–XY113). It later helped Lumiose City's citizens escape Team Flare's giant vines (XY132) and closed the series with a Solar Beam that burst against Braixen's Flamethrower in a shower of sparkles over the crowd (XY138).

Assunta's Ivysaur
Assunta
Indigo Plateau Conference competitor (Indigo League)
Ivysaur

First seen: EP080Friends to the End

Assunta is the Trainer who ended Ritchie's Indigo Plateau Conference – the same Ritchie who had just knocked Ash out of the tournament. Their sixth-round Full Battle came down to one Pokémon each, and Ivysaur was her closer: it charged in and flipped Sparky off its feet with Vine Whip, saw a Thunder Shock go wide, then hammered the little Pikachu with Solar Beam and finished it with Tackle. The win put Assunta into the semi-finals, and Ritchie – Ash's friend and rival – bowed out in the Top 8.

Crystal's Ivysaur
Crystal
Gary's colleague on Sayda Island (Pokémon Chronicles)
Ivysaur

First seen: HS15Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl!

On Sayda Island, where Gary now works as a Fossil Pokémon researcher, Crystal helps look after an Aerodactyl revived by Gary and her sister Dora. When Butch and Cassidy swooped in to steal it, her Ivysaur tackled Cassidy's Houndour, whipped Butch's Hitmontop and, with Gary's Umbreon at its side, fired a Solar Beam that helped Aerodactyl send the pair blasting off. Its Razor Leaf simply bounced off their metal helicopter in the rematch, leaving Gary's Dodrio to wreck it – and Tracey thanked Crystal with a sketch of her Ivysaur.

  • HS15Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl! · vs Hitmontop and Houndour Won
Jimmy's Ivysaur
Jimmy
aspiring Trainer and referee trainee on Bomba Island (Advanced Challenge)
Ivysaur

First seen: AG092Judgment Day!

Jimmy, a Trainer still waiting for his first win, was studying to be a referee at the Pokémon Battle Judge school on Bomba Island when Ash's group arrived after boarding the wrong boat. His Ivysaur joined him after helping itself to his sandwich in a forest (a rice ball in the Japanese version) and now earns its keep carrying boxes around the school. When Team Rocket's mecha locked it, Wartortle and Charmeleon in Poké Ball-shaped cages, Wartortle evolved into Blastoise to break them all free, and Ivysaur's Razor Leaf joined Flamethrower and Hydro Pump to blast the trio away. Encouraged by Professor Serena, Jimmy set off to restart his journey as a Trainer.

Jeremy's Ivysaur
Jeremy
Coordinator, businessman and former touring rocker from Silver Town (Battle Frontier)
Ivysaur → Venusaur

First seen: AG151Weekend Warrior
Evolved: AG151Weekend Warrior

Jeremy traded Pokémon training for a rock band and then an office job, but never let go of his dream of entering a Contest. A flashback to his younger days shows his partner as an Ivysaur; by the time he finally entered the Silver Town Contest it was a mighty Venusaur, which threw Razor Leaf, Vine Whip and two Frenzy Plants at May's Combusken in the final. Combusken edged it as the clock ran out, so May took the Silver Ribbon and Jeremy finished runner-up. Venusaur turns up again watching the Kanto Grand Festival on television with Jeremy's family – though, his son admits, it usually just sleeps (AG181).

James's Ivysaur
James
Team Rocket (borrowed for the Pokémon League entrance exam)
Ivysaur (the exam instructor's)

First seen: EP056The Ultimate Test

Jessie and James go undercover as students to sit the Pokémon League entrance exam, and the battle round hands James a belt holding a Pikachu, an Ivysaur and a Charizard – a sly mirror of Ash, whose belt contains Arbok, Weezing and Meowth. When the instructor's Graveler sends Pikachu flying, James panics and throws out Ivysaur and Charizard together, and is expelled on the spot for using two Pokémon at once. The trio later try to turn the borrowed Pokémon on the instructor, ordering Ivysaur to use Vine Whip, but one firm 'turn around' sends all three straight back at Team Rocket.

May's Ivysaur
May
companion (Advanced Generation) and Coordinator
Bulbasaur → Ivysaur (off-screen) → Venusaur

First seen: AG073Grass Hysteria!
Evolved: DP078Pruning a Passel of Pals!

May's Bulbasaur – the gentle child of the Forbidden Forest's guardian Venusaur – is the anime's great Ivysaur that never was. May left it at Professor Oak's Laboratory to learn from Ash's Bulbasaur (AG133), and when it next appeared, at the Wallace Cup in Sinnoh, it had evolved twice behind the scenes into a powerful Venusaur (DP078). Its Ivysaur stage happened somewhere between those episodes and has never been shown.

Ash & Ivysaur

Ash has never owned an Ivysaur. His Bulbasaur came closest – its bulb began to glow in Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden (EP051) – but it refused to evolve, and Ash backed its choice.

  • Ivysaur's anime debut is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role as a patient in A Chansey Operation (EP047), four episodes before its starring turn in Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden (EP051).
  • Ash has never owned an Ivysaur: his Bulbasaur dug in its heels at the very festival where every other Bulbasaur became one (EP051).
  • In The Ultimate Test (EP056) the League exam hands Ash Team Rocket's species and James a Pikachu, an Ivysaur and a Charizard – a mirror of Ash's own team that would have been perfect had his Bulbasaur not refused to evolve five episodes earlier.
  • The Mayor of Trovitopolis in The Mystery Menace (EP102) abandoned his childhood Bulbasaur in the sewers because it would not evolve into Ivysaur fast enough – and it grew into a giant instead.
  • Jimmy's team in Judgment Day! (AG092) is a full set of Kanto first partners in their middle stages – Ivysaur, Charmeleon and Wartortle – until Wartortle evolves into Blastoise to rescue the other two.
  • When Shauna's Ivysaur appeared in Tag Team Battle Inspiration! (XY090), it was the first Ivysaur in a TV episode for 261 episodes, since Playing the Performance Encore! (DP162).
  • May's Venusaur is the only first partner species owned by a main character to evolve twice off-screen – which is why her Ivysaur was never seen.
  • The dub title Ivysaur's Mysterious Tower! (JN003) nods to Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden – both episodes stage a mass evolution of the Bulbasaur line – and JN003 is also the first time a mass outbreak appears in the anime.

“The Seed Pokémon, Ivysaur, Bulbasaur's evolved form. The bulb on its back absorbs nourishment and blooms into a large flower.”

Ivysaur in the movies

4 films featuring Ivysaur.

Ivysaur has never had a starring role at the cinema: it is the franchise's great background artist. It made its film debut in The Power of One (1999), as one of the Pokémon that sense the trouble Lawrence III has stirred up, then joined the crowds in the opening of Destiny Deoxys (2004) and the all-species parade at the start of Kyurem vs. the Sword of Justice (2012). Its best scene is a little one in I Choose You! (2017), where a Trainer's Ivysaur ends up on the receiving end of Pikachu's pulled faces in a Pokémon Center. None of the Pikachu shorts or TV specials feature it, and it sat out Detective Pikachu and the CGI remake Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, while its evolution Venusaur got the bigger parts.

A wild Ivysaur

Ivysaur's film debut is a walk-on part in a world that's going wrong. When the collector Lawrence III starts capturing the legendary birds and the weather spins out of control, Pokémon everywhere can feel the disturbance, and an Ivysaur is among the crowd of Pokémon that sense it.

A Trainer's Ivysaur

Ivysaur's funniest film moment so far is a tiny one. While Ash is busy on the phone to his mum at a Pokémon Center, Pikachu comes nose to nose with a Trainer's Ivysaur and starts pulling faces at it.

Ivysaur in the Pokémon TCG

35 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Ivysaur has spent almost thirty years as the TCG's dependable middle child. It was in Japan's very first set, the Expansion Pack of October 1996, and reached English players in Base Set in January 1999: a 60 HP Stage 1 drawn by Ken Sugimori, with Vine Whip and a Poisonpowder to make opponents queasy. The pattern stuck. Ivysaur's attacks come straight from the plant on its back: sleep powders, poison seeds, leech seeds, sweet scents and plenty of Razor Leaf. It has never had an ex, EX, GX or V card, but it has some lovely oddities. Erika's Ivysaur has a Relaxing Scent that halves all damage. Dark Ivysaur began as a Japanese magazine card with a Game Boy symbol and became a BattleZone prize. The Supreme Victors card's Evolutionary Pollen sends the opponent to sleep as Ivysaur evolves. Its HP has nearly doubled along the way, from 60 to 110, and the Shining Legends card needs four Energy to retreat. That bulb is getting heavy.

The art has blossomed too. Sugimori's clean official style set the tone, Mitsuhiro Arita painted Japan's Intro Pack Ivysaur, and the Southern Islands card spreads one riverside scene across three cards with Togepi and Raticate. The e-Card and EX years brought new hands: Miki Tanaka, Atsuko Nishida, Hisao Nakamura, and Sumiyoshi Kizuki, whose Crystal Guardians Ivysaur joins up with a Bulbasaur. Later sets gave Ivysaur whole scenes. zig placed it by a lured PokéStop in Pokémon GO, Yoriyuki Ikegami painted the 151 Illustration Rare, and mashu made it the centrepiece of a Mega Evolution panorama between Bulbasaur and Mega Venusaur ex. Pokémon TCG Pocket keeps the garden growing: Kanako Eo's 2009 Supreme Victors art got a second life in Crimson Blaze, and Ryuta Fuse painted a Shiny Ivysaur for Celestial Guardians.

Ivysaur in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

In print, Ivysaur's finest hour belongs to Saur, Red's partner in Pokémon Adventures. Saur evolves at the gates of Celadon City in 1997 and spends a busy stretch of the story as an Ivysaur, losing a Gym battle to Erika, unmasking a hypnotised Kadabra posing as Professor Oak and cutting Lt. Surge's power lines with Razor Leaf, before evolving again in the middle of a battle with the fused legendary birds. In The Electric Tale of Pikachu, a wild Ivysaur talks a doubtful Bulbasaur into climbing a giant tree in search of its guardian Venusaur, and Bill says it was watching his own Ivysaur evolve that made him a researcher.

After that come smaller parts: Battle Frontier rentals, a Platinum chapter named after it, and a place in the decks of two Trading Card Game manga heroes. On the bookshelf you can learn to draw it or fold one out of paper. It's in the Day 1 verse of the English Pokérap, gets a pun in James's character song Lucky Lucky, and in 2026 it was one of the faces of the Pokémon x Natural History Museum range in London.

When the fight sends them tumbling, the tree's flowers open at sunrise and float them gently down, leaving Ivysaur wondering if it was luck and Bulbasaur, the former sceptic, sure it was the spirit.

Ivysaur trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Ivysaur such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Ivysaur's English name twines together 'ivy', the climbing plant that creeps up walls and tree trunks, and '-saur', the lizard suffix from Ancient Greek that turns up in so many dinosaur names. There is a sly hint of 'poison ivy' in there too – a neat nod to its Grass/Poison typing. In Japanese it is Fushigisou, built from fushigi (strange, mysterious) and sō (grass), and, just like Bulbasaur's Fushigidane, it doubles as an everyday phrase: 'Fushigi sō' – 'It seems strange'. The family's Japanese names grow up with it, from seed (tane) to grass (sō) to flower (bana).

Design origins

Ivysaur has a surprising claim to fame: it came first. Designed by Ken Sugimori, it was one of the original monsters drawn up for the Capsule Monsters pitch that grew into Pokémon – before Bulbasaur, before Venusaur, and before evolution was even part of the plan. Venusaur followed, and Atsuko Nishida then worked backwards from Venusaur to create Bulbasaur, so the middle of the family is really its root. Like the rest of the line it is a frog at heart: its short legs, stout body and ear-like bumps recall the chunky horned frogs (Ceratophrys) of South America. The bud on its back resembles a Rafflesia, the giant flower of South-East Asian rainforests, while the leaves cradling it look like the fronds of a palm tree.
