EX FireRed & LeafGreen booster packEX FireRed & LeafGreen is the sixth expansion of the EX Series, released on August 30th, 2004 and known in Japan as Flight of Legends. Tied directly to the FireRed and LeafGreen video games — the Game Boy Advance remakes of the originals — this 116-card set marks the trading card game’s big, nostalgic return to Kanto and the original Generation I Pokémon.

After three straight years of Hoenn, the old favourites came flooding back. The Kanto starters headline as Pokémon-ex — Charizard ex, Blastoise ex and Venusaur ex — joined by the likes of Gyarados ex, Clefable ex and even two different Mr. Mime ex cards. And tucked past the end of the checklist sit three secret-rare legends: the Kanto birds Articuno ex, Zapdos ex and Moltres ex.

True to its source, the set is stuffed with nods to the games, right down to Trainer cards named after FireRed & LeafGreen characters and items. Two theme decks shipped alongside it — FireRed (Fire/Water) and LeafGreen (Grass/Lightning) — and the official tagline said it best: “Brace yourself for an all-new era of battle!”

The official blurb pitched the crossover directly: collect Pokémon from Kanto and send them head-to-head against the Pokémon of Hoenn. Old region, new rules — the perfect companion to the remakes that had just landed on shelves.

Brace yourself for an all-new era of battle!

Collect Pokémon from the Kanto region and send them head-to-head against Pokémon from Hoenn.

Back to Kanto: The Set That Followed the Games

EX FireRed & LeafGreen isn’t just themed after the games — it was built to ride their wave. In 2004 Nintendo returned to where it all began with FireRed and LeafGreen, faithful Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Red and Blue. They were far more than a fresh coat of paint: the remakes added the brand-new Sevii Islands, brought back tougher Kanto Gym Leaders and Elite Four rematches, and even shipped with the Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter in the box — one of the series’ first real steps toward wireless multiplayer.

The card set answers all of that with callbacks of its own. Nowhere is that clearer than in its Trainer line-up, which reads like a FireRed & LeafGreen character sheet. Celio’s Network is named for Celio, the researcher you help on the Sevii Islands — a character who exists only in these games — while the VS Seeker card lifts its name straight from the remakes’ handy rematch gadget. Even Bill’s Maintenance tips its hat to Bill, the Kanto inventor of the Pokémon Storage System.

On the Pokémon side, the fan service is just as thick: the three iconic Kanto starters return as ex cards, the legendary birds close out the set as secret rares, and the whole release leans into the same “everything old is new again” nostalgia the games were selling. For anyone who grew up on Red and Blue, opening a FireRed & LeafGreen pack in 2004 felt like coming home — card by card, it mirrors the very games it was printed to celebrate.

Print Versions & Collectors Info

Boosters came in four artwork variants built around Kanto icons — Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur and Pikachu — each holding nine cards. Two theme decks, FireRed and LeafGreen, let players jump straight into the Kanto-versus-Hoenn clash.

Other Cards

The set’s Trainers are where its love letter to the games shines brightest — two of them are named directly after FireRed & LeafGreen characters and gadgets.

Celio’s Network (88/112)

Celio’s Network (88/112)

Named for Celio, the Sevii Islands researcher unique to FireRed & LeafGreen. In the TCG it’s a superb consistency card, searching your deck for almost any non-ex Pokémon — a staple that saw heavy competitive play.

VS Seeker (100/112)

VS Seeker (100/112)

Lifted straight from the remakes’ rematch gadget. Here it fishes a Supporter back out of your discard pile, recycling your best cards — a clever, flavourful bit of engine.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

A Kanto set lives or dies on its Kanto icons — and this one delivers, from the starter trio to the legendary birds hidden past the checklist.

Charizard ex (105/112)

Charizard ex (105/112)

The undisputed crown jewel. A Kanto-era Charizard ex from the return-to-Kanto set — endlessly chased, endlessly beloved, and comfortably the card everyone opens packs hoping to hit.

Blastoise ex (104/112)

Blastoise ex (104/112)

The water starter as an ex, complete with an Energy-loading Poké-Power — a centrepiece card and a natural partner to Charizard on any shelf.

Venusaur ex (112/112)

The grass starter rounds out the iconic trio, its Energy Trans power a nod to the classic Base Set Venusaur.

Articuno ex (114/112)

A secret-rare legendary bird — the freeze legend closes the set as one of three hidden chase cards.

Zapdos ex (116/112)

Zapdos ex (116/112)

The thunder bird, another secret rare and a favourite of collectors chasing the full trio of Kanto legends.

Moltres ex (115/112)

The fire bird completes the legendary trio — three secret-rare ex that make finishing this set a real challenge.

Gyarados ex (109/112)

The fan-favourite serpent as an ex — a popular, hard-hitting holo beyond the starters and birds.

Mr. Mime ex (110/112)

Mr. Mime ex (110/112)

One of two different Mr. Mime ex in the set — an unusual quirk that makes the barrier Pokémon a fun collector footnote.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Beyond the nostalgia, several of these Kanto ex were serious engines and attackers in the EX-era format.

Blastoise ex (104/112)

Blastoise ex (104/112)

Its Energy Rain Poké-Power pours Water Energy onto your board turn after turn — a premier accelerator that powered plenty of decks well beyond its own attacks.

Venusaur ex (112/112)

Venusaur ex (112/112)

Energy Trans lets you slide Grass Energy freely around your Pokémon — the classic flexible engine that made Grass decks tick.

Charizard ex (105/112)

Charizard ex (105/112)

A heavyweight finisher: convert its Energy to Fire and unload a huge, Weakness-and-Resistance-ignoring hit that few Pokémon could survive.

Celio’s Network (88/112)

Celio’s Network (88/112)

Not a Pokémon, but arguably the set’s most important competitive card — near-universal Pokémon search kept decks consistent for years.

Trivia

  • The set is a direct tie-in to the FireRed & LeafGreen video games, marking the trading card game’s big return to Kanto and Generation I Pokémon after three years in Hoenn.
  • Two Trainer cards are named straight from the games: Celio’s Network (after the Sevii Islands researcher who appears only in FR/LG) and the VS Seeker (the remakes’ rematch item), with Bill’s Maintenance nodding to Kanto’s PC inventor.
  • The three legendary birds — Articuno ex, Zapdos ex and Moltres ex — appear as secret rares beyond the main checklist.
  • The set contains two different Mr. Mime ex cards (110 and 111), an unusual quirk for a single expansion.
  • In Japan the set was titled Flight of Legends and served as the first main expansion of the PCG Era of the Japanese card game.
  • Its two theme decks, FireRed and LeafGreen, share their names with the games the set celebrates.
