01Overview
Meet Nidoqueen
Everything you need to know about the Drill Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Meet Nidoqueen, the Drill Pokémon – the armour-plated matriarch at the top of the Nidoran♀ family tree. Nidoran♀ grows into Nidorina at level 16, and one touch of a Moon Stone turns that gentle Nidorina into a 1.3-metre, 60-kilogram powerhouse. The change adds the Ground type to its Poison, and like the rest of its line it is always female: the stately opposite number to Nidoking.
It is built like a pocket-sized kaiju, with a blunt snout and narrow brown eyes that give it a stern, no-nonsense stare. Hard blue scales cover it from snout to tail, and when it gets excited those stiff, needle-like scales bristle outwards. A small horn sits on its brow, each big ear carries a spine and a ridge of toxic spikes runs down its back. Cream-coloured plates guard its jaw and chest, and a thick, powerful tail anchors the whole formidable package.
“The body is covered by stiff, needle-like scales. If it becomes excited, the needles bristle outwards.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed & Y · 1996
For all that armour, Nidoqueen is a protector first and a fighter second. It is better at defence than attack, plugs the entrance of its nest with its own rugged body to keep predators out, and is at its very strongest when its young are in danger. Its most tender habit is also its strangest: it soothes its little ones by tucking them into the gaps between the spines on its back – spines that never secrete a drop of poison while children are aboard.
When it does go on the offensive, it sends foes flying with heavy tackles and slams the ground hard enough to set off tremors. That raw power has made it a villain's favourite. Giovanni, the boss of Team Rocket, has trusted a Nidoqueen since the very first games, sending it out at Silph Co. and in the Viridian Gym, while in the anime Gary Oak's Nidoqueen beat Ash's Tauros at the Silver Conference.
Its great mystery is family. For a Pokémon whose Pokédex entries are so often about its children, Nidoqueen cannot breed at all: it belongs to the No Eggs Discovered group, and together with Nidorina it is the only Pokémon to lose that ability by evolving. Fans have puzzled over it for decades, and it only adds to its legend as Kanto's toughest – and most devoted – mum: a battle-hardened tank who is, at heart, a doting parent.
How big is Nidoqueen?

At 1.3 m (4′03″) Nidoqueen is about as tall as a typical eight-year-old, but at 60 kg (132.3 lb) it weighs as much as a grown adult.

The Fairy resistance applies from Generation VI, when the Fairy type arrived.

Pokémon GO
Nidoqueen has reigned in Pokémon GO since the game launched in July 2016. It never hatches from Eggs: instead, you feed a Nidorina 100 Nidoran♀ Candy, and as a buddy it finds Candy every 3 km. Its Shiny form arrived during a surprise 24-hour event for female Pokémon in October 2018, which filled the wild with Nidoran♀, Nidorina and Nidoqueen and let lucky Trainers catch a Shiny Nidoqueen outright, no evolving needed. The whole family returned to the spotlight on Nidoran Day, 28 November 2020, with event Timed Research and boosted Shiny odds for both Nidoran. Its moveset keeps growing – Earth Power joined in May 2019, Poison Fang in May 2021, and Poison Sting and Mud-Slap as Fast Attacks in 2025 – and it also comes in Shadow and Purified versions, which add Frustration and Return.
Its Jungle card – Boyfriends attack and all – can be collected and played in the handheld version of the card game.
There's no catching it on the table: evolve a Nidorina to add Nidoqueen to your Pinball Pokédex.
Stomps into 3D with its own Stadium Pokédex entry, and Giovanni brings one to his Gym Leader Castle battles.
Back in the arena, with the Pokédex showing its Gold or Silver entry depending on the cartridge you plug in.
A rare piece that turns up in Secret Storage 9, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den.
You can't recruit its directly – evolve a Nidorina instead. Its friend area is the Safari, and its motto is 'Don't you underestimate me because I'm female!'
Lurks on floors B1F–B29F of Concealed Ruins and World Abyss, waiting to join your exploration team.
Still found in Concealed Ruins and World Abyss in the expanded Explorers adventure.
A wind-up Nidoqueen can be battled and befriended in the Eternal Tower.
Exclusive to Keep Going! Blazing Adventure Squad, alongside Nidoran♀ and Nidorina.
Brawls in Verdant Plaza's Battle Royale – and, as a Drill Pokémon, in the aptly named Variety Battle 'It's Drill Time!'
Appears in Stage 2 of the Safari Jungle on Fridays; its True Strength skill boosts damage when your energy is half or less.
Clear Jungle Verde Stage 140 to catch it; its Power of 4 skill adds damage whenever you match four.
Found throughout the Shrine of Magic in the Ember Mountains.
Joins through Nidoran♀'s Connection Orb mission at Nidoran♀'s secret base, boasting 'I'm really tough, so I can take any kind of attack!'
Here since launch day, with a Shiny form since October 2018 and Shadow and Purified forms to collect.
One of the 151 cube-shaped Kanto Pokémon living on Tumblecube Island.
Patrols the Dragonite, Garchomp, Butterfree and Bulbasaur Seas.
Hatch a Nidoran♀ from an Egg and you can raise it all the way to Nidoqueen.
Turns up in Magma Cavern, the Desert Region and the depths of Wish Cave and Purity Forest, plus the Mystery House in Silver Trench.
Moves
Evolving with a Moon Stone has always meant swapping future level-ups for instant power, and Red and Green show it plainly: Nidoqueen's own list runs out at a level-23 Body Slam, with Poison Sting at 14 (Double Kick at 12 in Yellow) and little else. Its real arsenal sat in the TM case, 32 TMs and HMs strong, from Earthquake, Thunderbolt and Ice Beam to the one-hit gambles Fissure and Horn Drill. Gold and Silver brought the first Egg moves, inherited from its Nidoran♀ days, and Crystal's tutor added Flamethrower, Ice Beam and Thunderbolt.
Later games gave the queen something to grow into. FireRed and LeafGreen slipped Superpower in at level 43, then Diamond and Pearl handed that slot to Earth Power, its first Ground-type move by level-up, and saved Superpower for 58. Black and White added Chip Away, Let's Go made Body Slam its evolution move, and Sword and Shield served the whole list at level 1 alongside 71 TMs and TRs. Nidoqueen sits out Legends: Arceus, Scarlet, Violet and Legends: Z-A, so that is its latest word for now.
Signature moves
Nidoqueen's original party piece: in Red and Blue it knows Body Slam from the start and learns it again at level 23 (22 in FireRed and LeafGreen), until Black and White pushed it back to 35. In Let's Go it arrives the moment Nidorina evolves.
Yellow taught it at level 12, and from Gold and Silver onwards it is ready from level 1 in every game except Let's Go, where it has to be learnt as Nidoran♀ or Nidorina.
FireRed and LeafGreen introduced it at level 43. From Diamond and Pearl it became the level-58 finale (55 in Let's Go), and Sword and Shield make it the move Nidoqueen learns on evolving.
Diamond and Pearl's level-43 reward was Nidoqueen's first Ground-type move by level-up, and Platinum was the first game to teach it by tutor as well. In Sword and Shield it is ready from level 1.
TM26 in every generation from Red and Blue to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and still TM26 in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: the classic Ground-type finisher for a Ground-type queen.
Black and White's TM34 gave Nidoqueen a toxic tidal wave to match its Poison typing. It later became TR78 in Sword and Shield and a level-1 move in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
Complete learnsets
Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow8 level-up · 32 TM/HM
Nidoqueen comes from using a Moon Stone on Nidorina in every version. Its own level-up list is short: Tackle, Scratch, Tail Whip and Body Slam from the start, a second Scratch at level 8 and a second Body Slam at level 23. Red, Green and Blue add Poison Sting at level 14, while Yellow swaps it for Double Kick at level 12. Moves it can only pick up earlier as Nidoran♀ or Nidorina, such as Bite, Fury Swipes and Growl, are listed under prior evolutions. Its HMs are Surf and Strength. Move categories follow the old rule, where a move's type decided whether it was physical or special. The transfer moves are Generation II moves that can come back through the Time Capsule, including an event-only Lovely Kiss.

Generation II · Gold, Silver & Crystal5 level-up · 38 TM/HM · 7 egg · 3 tutor · 3 event
Nidoqueen comes from evolving Nidorina in Gold, Silver and Crystal. Tackle, Scratch, Double Kick and Tail Whip are there from the start, and Body Slam at level 23 is its only new move by level-up. Nidoqueen belongs to the Undiscovered Egg Group and cannot breed, so its Egg moves are ones a Nidoran♀ can hatch with and keep through both evolutions; Counter needs chain breeding. Crystal's move tutor teaches Flamethrower, Ice Beam and Thunderbolt, none of which are TMs in these games. Event Nidoran♀ could come with Lovely Kiss, Moonlight or Sweet Kiss, which stay with it when it evolves. Categories still follow type, Curse is ???-type, and Hidden Power's category depends on the type it rolls.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor data also covers XD)6 level-up · 39 TM/HM · 7 egg · 21 tutor
Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Colosseum and XD have no Nidoqueen of their own, so it has to be traded in; FireRed and LeafGreen let you evolve Nidorina. Tackle leaves the list, Body Slam arrives at level 23 in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald but level 22 in FireRed and LeafGreen, and only FireRed and LeafGreen add Superpower at level 43. Helping Hand, Flatter and Crunch can only come from its earlier stages. Categories still follow type, so Bite and Crunch count as special attacks while Sludge Bomb is a physical one. Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver7 level-up · 57 TM/HM · 9 egg · 15 tutor
Every game in this generation lets you evolve Nidorina, and Nidoqueen can also be brought over from the Game Boy Advance games through Pal Park. This is the first generation in which every move has its own physical or special category. Nidoqueen finally learns a Ground-type move by level-up, Earth Power at level 43, and Superpower moves to level 58. Whirlpool (HM05) and the Skull Bash Egg move are HeartGold and SoulSilver only, and the tutor moves come from Platinum and HeartGold and SoulSilver, with Headbutt and Super Fang taught only in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 28 level-up · 53 TM/HM · 13 egg · 16 tutor · 2 event
Nidoqueen cannot be found in Black; in White, Black 2 and White 2 it comes from evolving Nidorina. Chip Away joins at level 23, pushing Body Slam back to level 35. All tutor moves are Black 2 and White 2 only. Nidoran♀ from the Pokémon Dream World could know Sucker Punch (and, in Black and White, Super Fang) and kept it on evolving.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon9 level-up · 49 TM/HM · 14 egg · 21 tutor
Nidoqueen has no wild home in Alola: it reaches Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon only through Pokémon Bank. Its level-up list is the same as in Generation VI. Tutor moves, including the new Stomping Tantrum and Throat Chop, are Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon only. Dig is no longer one of its TMs, so it can only arrive with a transferred Nidoqueen.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (Version 1.3.0+ and The Crown Tundra), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl16 level-up · 122 TM/HM · 18 egg · 1 tutor
Sword and Shield: Nidoqueen arrived with Version 1.3.0, by trade or in The Crown Tundra (Expansion Pass), where it wanders around Giant's Bed, turns up in Max Raid Battles at Giant's Bed, the Frigid Sea and Ballimere Lake, and appears in Dynamax Adventures in the Max Lair. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: evolve Nidorina. Both pairs share one level-up list with every move at level 1 and Superpower on evolution, although Sludge Wave is a level-1 move only in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. TMs, TRs and Egg moves differ between the two pairs of games, Scorching Sands comes from the Expansion Pass move tutor, and some older moves it can bring along, such as Hidden Power, Return and Pursuit, were removed from Sword and Shield and cannot be used there. Nidoqueen does not appear in Legends: Arceus.

Nidoqueen in the anime
Debut M01Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back · First major role EP093Navel Maneuvers · Its appearances on screen, and 6 other trainers who raised one.
Nidoqueen has never travelled with Ash, but it has a habit of turning up on the other side of the field. Its anime story began in cinemas, with Fergus's Nidoqueen among the Pokémon Mewtwo cloned in Mewtwo Strikes Back, and reached TV in the Orange Islands, where Danny's Nidoqueen out-froze Ash's Lapras with Ice Beam. Its signature role belongs to Gary: his Nidoqueen sent Team Rocket blasting off from Professor Oak's Laboratory on its first appearance and opened his Silver Conference Full Battle against Ash by catching Tauros by the horns, before Snorlax's Ice Punch ended its run.
Elsewhere, Nidoqueen tends to come as half of a pair. Andi's Nidoqueen and Oscar's Nidoking tag-teamed Ash and May into the ground in Hoenn, Damos's Nidoqueen marched on Arceus alongside Nidoking, and in a POKÉTOON short a Nidoqueen and Nidoking go after a girl they think has kidnapped their son. Pokémon Origins finally put Giovanni's Nidoqueen on screen, beating Red's Charizard at Silph Co., and in Kalos the species even took a turn on the Showcase stage with the Performer Queenko.
Other trainers’ Nidoqueen

First seen: EP115A Tent Situation
Now: Not seen since the Silver Conference (EP270)
Gary came home from his travels with a new heavyweight. In A Tent Situation (EP115), a mysterious Trainer turned up just as Team Rocket were laying siege to Professor Oak's Laboratory, and his Nidoqueen made short work of them. It grabbed Lickitung by the tongue and swung it into Team Rocket, sent Victreebel flying with Mega Punch and shrugged off Meowth's Scratch so completely that his claws broke on its armoured hide. A Strength throw sent Team Rocket blasting off, and Nidoqueen used its horn to free everyone. The onlookers were full of admiration for such a well-trained Pokémon; Ash, unsurprisingly, was not.
Their paths crossed again in the Silver Conference's Victory Tournament, where Ash and Gary finally met in a six-on-six Full Battle. Gary led with Nidoqueen and Ash answered with Tauros (EP269). A super-effective Rock Smash sent rocks flying, and when Tauros charged in with Horn Attack, Nidoqueen simply caught it by the horns and blasted it with Hyper Beam at point-blank range. Gary then swapped it out for Magmar.
It came back in Can't Beat the Heat! (EP270) after Arcanine fainted, this time against Snorlax. Borrowing a trick from Ash's Bayleef, Nidoqueen used its tail as a springboard to leap up and land a Double Kick, but when it tried Hyper Beam, Snorlax ducked underneath it and knocked it out with Ice Punch, levelling the score. Ash went on to win the battle and knock his old rival out of the tournament, and Gary's Nidoqueen has not been seen since.

Danny's Nidoqueen gave the species its TV-series debut, and it did it with a surprise: an Ice Beam. The Navel Gym, high on a snowy mountain, tests challengers with a series of contests rather than a single battle, and in the race to freeze a hot-water geyser it beat Ash's Lapras comfortably (EP093). It then teamed up with Machoke and Scyther to carve a bobsled out of ice, but their brute-force approach lost out to Ash's team, and Ash went on to win the Sea Ruby Badge. Nidoqueen popped up again in flashbacks a few weeks later (EP098, EP111).

Pokémon Origins finally gave the Viridian Gym Leader's famous Nidoqueen a screen role, though not in his Gym. When Red stormed Silph Co. in File 3: Giovanni, the Team Rocket boss took a Poké Ball from a briefcase held by one of his Grunts and sent out Nidoqueen against Red's Charizard. A Double Kick slammed Charizard into a wall, and when its Flamethrower met Nidoqueen's Surf, the explosion cut the power and blew a hole in the side of the building, leaving Charizard knocked out. Unimpressed, Giovanni recalled Nidoqueen and left in a Team Rocket helicopter. When Red later challenged him at the Viridian Gym, he faced Rhyhorn and Rhydon instead.

Andi and her boyfriend Oscar are a lovestruck Hoenn couple who love nothing more than a Tag Battle together, so it's only right that she trains a Nidoqueen and he trains a Nidoking. When Ash and May took them on with Corphish and Skitty, Ash and May spent the battle squabbling while the Nido pair combined their attacks, finishing both opponents with a double Submission (AG072). Jessie decided the couple's hefty Pokémon would make perfect gifts for Giovanni, but twin Hyper Beams sent Team Rocket flying. Andi's Nidoqueen is also the one that finally gave the species its first anime Pokédex entry, courtesy of May.

First seen: M01Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back
Fergus, who crossed a raging sea on his own Pokémon to answer Mewtwo's invitation, proudly presents himself as a Water-type Trainer, which makes his Nidoqueen the odd one out: it is the only non-Water type on his team. It was with the rest of his Pokémon on New Island when Mewtwo captured them all and made copies, so a cloned Nidoqueen joined Mewtwo's army (M01). It plays the same role in the 2019 CGI remake, Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution (M22).

First seen: XY091A Performance Pop Quiz!
Queenko, a Performer with a fittingly regal name, brought her Nidoqueen to the Anistar City Pokémon Showcase (XY091). The pair won their group in the opening Theme Performance, a Pokémon quiz, and made it through to the Freestyle Performance, where Serena took the Princess Key. Queenko and Nidoqueen were back for the Master Class in Gloire City, but went out in the early rounds (XY112).
Ash & Nidoqueen
Ash has never caught a Nidoqueen, but he has been on the receiving end of one more than once. Danny's Nidoqueen out-froze his Lapras at the Navel Gym (EP093), Andi's teamed up with Oscar's Nidoking to beat him and May in a Tag Battle (AG072), and Gary's flattened his Tauros at the Silver Conference before Snorlax finally brought it down with Ice Punch (EP269, EP270).

Anime trivia
- Nidoqueen reached cinemas before television: Fergus's Nidoqueen appeared in Mewtwo Strikes Back in July 1998, nine months before Danny's gave the species its TV-series debut in Navel Maneuvers (EP093).
- Fergus claims every Pokémon on his team is a Water type, even though he has a Poison/Ground-type Nidoqueen with him. In fairness, Nidoqueen could learn Surf in the original games, and Giovanni's Nidoqueen uses it in Pokémon Origins.
- Nidoqueen waited a long time for its first anime Pokédex entry: May scanned Andi's Nidoqueen in The Bicker the Better (AG072), years after the species' TV debut.
- Nidoqueen can't breed in the games, yet the cloned Nidoqueen in Mewtwo Returns somehow have four young ones, which look like little Nidoqueen rather than Nidoran♀.
- Gary's Nidoqueen caught Tauros by the horns before blasting it with Hyper Beam (EP269). The commentator claimed it had needed only one attack, conveniently forgetting the Rock Smash that came first.
- Nidoqueen's cream-coloured lower jaw keeps turning blue: it happened to Gary's in Can't Beat the Heat! (EP270), to Andi's in The Bicker the Better (AG072) and to a wild one in Historical Mystery Tour! (DP140). In Mewtwo Strikes Back, Fergus's Nidoqueen was even painted in Nidoking's colours for one shot.
- In the Polish dub of Navel Maneuvers (EP093), Danny's Nidoqueen is called Nidoking.
- After Historical Mystery Tour! (DP140), Nidoqueen disappeared from the main series for 284 episodes, until Queenko's Nidoqueen turned up in A Performance Pop Quiz! (XY091).

Nidoqueen in the movies
4 films, 2 Pikachu shorts and 3 specials featuring Nidoqueen.
Nidoqueen was there from the very start of Pokémon at the cinema. On 18 July 1998 it appeared in both halves of the first double bill: Fergus's Nidoqueen, the one non-Water type in his team, is captured and cloned in Mewtwo Strikes Back, while another enjoys the Pokémon Theme Park in Pikachu's Vacation. The clone family returns, with babies in tow, in the TV special Mewtwo Returns, and Fergus's Nidoqueen meets the same fate in the 2019 CGI remake. Its biggest scene came in Arceus and the Jewel of Life, where Damos's four Nidoqueen are turned against Arceus. A wild Nidoqueen also falls under Marshadow's control in I Choose You!, and the POKÉTOON short Blossom's Dream gives the species a starring turn as a fiercely protective mum. It sits out both Detective Pikachu and Secrets of the Jungle.

Fergus's Nidoqueen; Mewtwo's clone of it
Nidoqueen's big-screen debut comes with an awkward bit of bragging. It belongs to Fergus (Umio in Japan), one of the Trainers who make it to New Island, and it's the odd one out in his team: Fergus insists all his Pokémon are Water types, yet there it is. He's right about one thing, though: they can all swim the crossing, because Nidoqueen can learn Surf.
Like the rest of his team, it is captured by Mewtwo and cloned. Sharp-eyed fans can also spot a colouring slip: when Fergus runs to his injured Gyarados, Nidoqueen is briefly painted in Nidoking's colours.

Damos's four Nidoqueen (with his two Nidoking)
Nidoqueen's meatiest film role is a villainous one, though not by choice. In the ancient past, Damos keeps a whole menagerie of Pokémon, four Nidoqueen among them, locked away. The scheming Marcus, who has Damos under hypnosis, leads them to Arceus, and they pelt the Pokémon god with Shock Wave.
When Ash and his friends travel back in time to set history right, Marcus turns the Nidoqueen on Arceus all over again.

Fergus's Nidoqueen; its clone
The CGI remake gives Fergus's Nidoqueen exactly the same fate as before. Fergus proudly shows off his Water-type collection of Gyarados, Seadra, Golduck, Tentacruel and Vaporeon, with Nidoqueen once again the one that doesn't fit. When Mewtwo starts collecting, his whole team is captured with ease, and Nidoqueen is cloned all over again.
Pikachu shorts
- PK01Pikachu's Vacation (1998) · A Nidoqueen at the Pokémon Theme Park
A Nidoqueen is one of the Pokémon enjoying the Pokémon Theme Park, the Pokémon-only playground where Pikachu and friends spend their holiday. The short opened for Mewtwo Strikes Back, so Nidoqueen appeared in both halves of that very first cinema double bill. - PT03Blossom's Dream (POKÉTOON) (2021) · A wild Nidoqueen and Nidoking, parents of Blossom's Nidoran♂
Nidoqueen gets a proper part as a furious mum in this POKÉTOON web short by Studio Colorido. Blossom saves a young Nidoran♂ from an Arbok and patches him up, but when he trails after her, an irate Nidoking and Nidoqueen give chase all the way into town, overpowering the locals' Pokémon on the way.Blossom vows not to hurt Nidoran's family and, with help from her dad's elderly Charizard, Char-ly, reassures the parents that their son is safe. Nidoran decides to stay with his new Trainer, and Nidoking and Nidoqueen happily give their blessing.
TV specials
- Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns (2000)
The clone Nidoqueen is back in Mewtwo's sequel special, and it hasn't been lonely: there are now five clone Nidoqueen, with four little ones in tow. That's a real curiosity, because Nidoqueen can't produce Eggs in the games, and the youngsters look like pint-sized Nidoqueen rather than Nidoran. The clone Rhyhorn have babies too.The family's peace doesn't last. When Team Rocket's agent Domino attacks with her crackling electric lines, the Nidoqueen and Rhyhorn clones get a nasty shock.
- Showdown at the Oak Corral (2003)
This Nidoqueen is a fake. In this side story, later shown in English as part of Pokémon Chronicles, Bulbasaur notices an odd-looking Golem and Nidoqueen at Professor Oak's Laboratory, which turn out to be Butch and Cassidy in disguise. - Oaknapped! (2003)
Cassidy evidently liked the look, because a Nidoqueen costume is back in this side story about the search for Professor Oak. Butch brings it in, supposedly as a prop for a show, with Cassidy hiding inside, and a guard later remembers two people leaving with the very same stuffed Nidoqueen.

Nidoqueen in the Pokémon TCG
28 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Nidoqueen has never had an ex, a V or a Mega Evolution card, yet for nearly thirty years it has been one of the Pokémon TCG's most devoted mothers. Its first card arrived in Japan's Pokémon Jungle expansion in March 1997 and reached English players in Jungle in June 1999: Ken Sugimori's 90 HP holo, whose Boyfriends attack grows stronger with every Nidoking in play. That love story never really ended. Giovanni's Nidoqueen in Gym Challenge needs Giovanni's Nidoking on the Bench for a full-power Love Lariat, Team Rocket's Nidoqueen in Destined Rivals hits for 180 with a Nidoking on the Bench, and TCG Pocket's Lovestrike piles on 50 for each Benched Nidoking. In between it looks after the family. It cuts their Retreat Costs, makes their attacks cheaper, heals the whole team with Maternal Comfort, evolves your Active Pokémon from the Bench and calls new Pokémon out of the deck with Queen's Call.
Because the card game has no Poison type, its colours have shifted with the rules. It was Grass in the early years and Fighting in EX FireRed & LeafGreen, then Psychic from Mysterious Treasures to Team Up and Darkness since 151, with one Metal-type Delta Species oddity in EX Dragon Frontiers. Its look has changed too, from Sugimori's clean early artwork and Mitsuhiro Arita's Skyridge painting to sui's Triumphant card with a Moon Stone in the picture. Later came PLANETA's Ω Barrage card, nagimiso's Team Up art (reused in TCG Pocket) and Teeziro's 151 Nidoqueen. Midori Harada drew it twice, for Rising Rivals and a Team Up Prerelease promo, and Pocket collectors can also chase aoki's Illustration Rare and a Shiny Nidoqueen by Souichirou Gunjima.
Cards to know

- EX Dragon Frontiers 7/101 (Nidoqueen δ) — A steel-clad Metal-type Nidoqueen from the Delta Species era, whose Invitation fetches any Basic Pokémon or Evolution card from your deck.
- Rising Rivals 30/111 — Midori Harada's caring queen: Maternal Comfort patches up your whole team between turns and made it a staple healer in tanky decks.
- Primal Clash 69/160 — The Ω Barrage Ancient Trait turns Nidoqueen into a double attacker, letting it strike twice in a single turn.
- Destined Rivals 116/182 (Team Rocket's Nidoqueen) — With a Nidoking on the Bench, Love Impact jumps from 60 to 180 damage for a single Energy.

Nidoqueen in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
On paper, Nidoqueen has been everything from a lucky accident to a hostage-taker. Its first chapter in Pokémon Adventures has Red catching one by mistake while two Nidoking fight over it, and Giovanni's Nidoqueen then hurls Snor through a wall at the Viridian Gym in a chapter named after it. Years later, Green's faithful Nido finally evolves into one in the Trainer Tower. Pokémon Zensho's Giovanni uses his Nidoqueen to hold the Silph Co. boss hostage, The Electric Tale of Pikachu puts one on Rudy's team, and in Pocket Monsters Red's Clefairy fools Giovanni's Nidoking with a Nidoqueen disguise. On the bookshelf, Scholastic's The Four-Star Challenge retells Danny's Ice Beam-firing Nidoqueen, and the Pokémon Center's Sitting Cuties range has given it a plush. Nidoqueen is also in the Wednesday verse of the English Pokérap, anime openings and endings from Kanto to Journeys, and the 2026 celebrations, where its 30th-anniversary logo appears alongside Giovanni's other Gym Pokémon.
Manga
Pika's Thunderbolt wins the battle anyway, even though a Ground type like Nidoqueen shouldn't really have felt it. It's level 65 with a Careful nature, knows Counter, Poison Sting and Scratch, and has the Ability Poison Point. It's back in the Yellow chapters (PS088, volume 7) and in later flashbacks.

Nidoqueen trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Nidoqueen such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Nidoqueen keeps the same name in English and Japanese – written ニドクイン, Nidokuin, in katakana – and most European languages leave it unchanged too. It most likely fuses nīdoru, the Japanese rendering of 'needle', with 'queen': a fair description of a monarch clad in needle-like scales. There may be a second pun hidden inside, as nido (二度) means 'twice' – and Nidoqueen has evolved twice to claim its crown. Chinese versions call it 尼多后 (Níduōhòu), where 后 means 'queen', while older Cantonese media went one better with 尼美后, slipping in 美, 'beautiful'.
Design origins
Nidoqueen was designed by Ken Sugimori, and it is a whole menagerie in one: the upright, heavy-tailed build of a kaiju, the horn of a rhinoceros, a dash of gorilla, the big ears of a rabbit and the spines of a porcupine. It was most likely conceived as a variation on Nidoking, recast as a defensive, protective guardian, and the cream plates on its chest and lower belly together look rather like a two-piece bikini. Its look has softened over the years, too: the Red & Blue artwork, the Gold & Silver and Generation III sprites and the Pokémon Stadium model all gave it visible teeth, while modern depictions usually keep its mouth closed.

Did you know?
- Nidoqueen shares its Drill Pokémon category with Nidoking, Rhydon and Rhyperior – and all four are part Ground type.
- Nidorina and Nidoqueen are the only Pokémon that can't breed even though their pre-evolution can: Nidoran♀ lays Eggs, but evolve it and that ability is gone.
- Japanese books such as the Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia and the Official Fan Book of Pocket Monsters said the evolved forms couldn't lay eggs before breeding even existed in the games.
- It is the only member of the Nidoran family whose Shiny colours don't match the normal colours of its opposite-gender counterpart.
- Japanese Red & Green list Nidoqueen's weight as 6.0 kg instead of 60.0 kg. It made no difference, as nothing in those games used weight.
- Its first trading card, Jungle's Nidoqueen, has an attack called Boyfriends that does 20 extra damage for every Nidoking you have in play. In Japanese it is the 'Lovey-Dovey Attack'.
- Trade a Nidoqueen from Red or Blue to Gold, Silver or Crystal through the Time Capsule and it arrives holding a Bitter Berry.
- Generation VI gave it a 10-point Attack boost, from 82 to 92 – the only change its base stats have ever had.
- In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Giovanni's Lv. 68 Nidoqueen defends Team Rainbow Rocket's castle with Surf, Sludge Wave, Earth Power and Flamethrower.
- Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! hide a Nidoqueen Master Trainer, Percy, on Route 23, whose Lv. 75 Nidoqueen knows Super Fang, Blizzard and Surf.
- Its Pokémon Stadium model, complete with four teeth, was reused in Stadium 2, Colosseum, XD: Gale of Darkness and Battle Revolution.
- In Pokémon Origins, Giovanni's Nidoqueen beats Red's Charizard at Silph Co., letting the Team Rocket boss make his escape.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Green's Nidorina, Nido, evolves into Nidoqueen to back up Blasty's Hydro Cannon.
- In Pokémon Zensho, Giovanni uses his Nidoqueen to hold the president of Silph Co. hostage.
- In HeartGold and SoulSilver's Pokéathlon, Nidoqueen can max out at five stars in both Power and Stamina.
