EX Dragon Frontiers is the fifteenth expansion of the EX Series, released on November 8th, 2006 and known in Japan as Offense and Defense of the Furthest Ends. A dragon-themed 101-card set set on “a far-away island where Delta Species Pokémon thrive,” it is almost entirely δ Delta Species — the type-bending gimmick’s grand finale — under the tagline “Beyond the horizon lie the Dragon Frontiers.”
The ex line is a dragon-lover’s dream, every one a Delta Species: Altaria, Dragonite, Flygon, Gardevoir, Kingdra, the Eon duo Latias and Latios, Rayquaza, Salamence and Tyranitar all appear as Pokémon-ex δ.
But everything here orbits two shiny grails. Charizard ★ (100) — the Gold Star Charizard — is one of the single most coveted cards in the entire hobby, joined by a companion Mew ★ (101). Between them, they turn a Dragon Frontiers box into one of the most exciting — and nerve-wracking — rips in vintage Pokémon.
Two theme decks shipped alongside it, Shadow Blaze (Fire/Psychic) and Power Wave (Lightning/Fighting). This was the last full outing for Delta Species — and it made sure to go out with a roar.
Beyond the horizon lie the Dragon Frontiers.
Sail to a distant island where Delta Species Pokémon run wild — and chase the rarest dragons of all.
— Original Pokémon USA promotional copy, 2006
Chasing the Charizard ★: A Grail of the Delta Species Era
Some cards are chase cards. Charizard ★ is a legend. Take the most famous Pokémon in the world, print it as a shiny Gold Star — the EX era’s rarest pull, roughly one per booster box — and wrap it in striking δ Delta Species artwork, and you get one of the most coveted cards the hobby has ever produced. For a lot of collectors, the Dragon Frontiers Charizard Star sits at or near the very top of the want-list.
It isn’t alone, either. Card 101 is a Mew ★, its Mimicry attack copying any move on the board — a lovely, versatile companion grail to close the checklist. Two Gold Stars in one small set, one of them the Charizard, is a big part of why Dragon Frontiers boxes are opened with such trembling hands.
The setting earns it. Picking up the Delta Species baton from EX Crystal Guardians, this set goes all-in on the gimmick — nearly every card is a δ Pokémon in an off-type, and the whole thing is themed around dragons on a distant frontier. It was the last full hurrah for Delta Species, and giving it a Charizard Gold Star send-off feels exactly right: the boldest idea of the era, bowing out on its most beloved face.
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Boosters came in four artwork variants — Latias, Salamence, Tyranitar and Nidoking — each holding nine cards, with the famous Gold Stars falling at roughly one per booster box. Two theme decks, Shadow Blaze and Power Wave, rounded out the release.

Other Cards
With nearly every card a Delta Species, even the commons and non-ex holos are worth a look — familiar Pokémon in unfamiliar colours.
Feraligatr δ (2/101)
The Johto water starter recast as a Delta Species — a striking off-type holo that captures the whole set’s “that’s not the right colour” charm.
Nidoking δ (6/101)
A Delta Species Nidoking, one of the set’s beefier non-ex attackers and a favourite for players building on the dragon-frontier theme.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
This is a chase-card heavyweight: two grail Gold Stars leading an all-dragon line of Delta Species ex.
Charizard ★ (100/101)
The grail. A shiny Gold Star Charizard in Delta Species dress — one of the most coveted and valuable cards in all of vintage Pokémon, and unquestionably the card of the set.
Mew ★ (101/101)
The set’s second Gold Star — a shiny mythical whose Mimicry attack copies any move on the board. A superb companion grail to the Charizard Star.
Rayquaza ex δ (97/101)
The sky-serpent as a Delta Species ex, hitting harder when you’re behind on Prizes — a dragon-set centrepiece.
Latias ex δ (95/101)
Half of the Eon duo as a Delta Species ex — a fan favourite, forever collected alongside its brother.
Latios ex δ (96/101)
The other Eon legend, sharing free retreat with Latias — the pair are a highlight of the set’s ex line.
Dragonite ex δ (91/101)
The beloved pseudo-legendary dragon as a Delta Species ex — a natural chase card in a dragon-themed set.
Salamence ex δ (98/101)
The Hoenn dragon as an ex, and one of the set’s booster-art headliners — a striking, desirable holo.
Kingdra ex δ (94/101)
The sea-dragon as a Delta Species ex, rounding out a deep and dragon-heavy ex roster.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Under the shiny surface, Dragon Frontiers gave the format some genuinely sharp attackers.
Flygon ex δ (92/101)
Sand Damage quietly drops a counter on each of your opponent’s Benched Basics every turn — passive, relentless spread that set up multiple knockouts.
Rayquaza ex δ (97/101)
Its Rage Aura makes its big attacks cheaper whenever you’re behind on Prizes — a comeback threat that punished opponents for pulling ahead.
Tyranitar ex δ (99/101)
Hyper Claws hits even harder against Stage 2 Pokémon, and its marker attack sets up follow-up damage — a heavy hitter tuned to beat the format’s big evolvers.
Latios ex δ (96/101)
Link Wing gives your whole Latias/Latios line free retreat, and Ice Barrier walls off attacks — a slippery, defensive engine for an Eon deck.
Trivia
- The set is home to Charizard ★ (100/101) — the Gold Star Charizard — one of the most famous and valuable cards in all of vintage Pokémon, joined by a second Gold Star, Mew ★.
- Almost every card is a δ Delta Species, making Dragon Frontiers the last full outing for the type-bending gimmick — here in single-type form, following EX Crystal Guardians.
- Its entire Pokémon-ex line is dragon-flavoured and Delta Species — Altaria, Dragonite, Flygon, Kingdra, Latias, Latios, Rayquaza, Salamence, Tyranitar and Gardevoir.
- The set is themed around “a far-away island where Delta Species Pokémon thrive,” concluding the long-running Holon storyline.
- Its Japanese title translates to Offense and Defense of the Furthest Ends, and it shipped with two theme decks, Shadow Blaze and Power Wave.
