01Overview
Meet Blastoise
Everything you need to know about the Shellfish Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Blastoise is where Squirtle's story ends – and it ends with a bang. Evolving from Wartortle at level 36, the little pond turtle grows into a hulking, two-legged tortoise: blue skin, a cream underbelly, a heavy brown shell ringed with white and, the part everyone remembers, two water cannons jutting out over its shoulders, ready to slide out for battle or tuck safely away.
Those cannons are no party trick. The jets they fire can punch through thick steel and pierce concrete walls, yet they are precise enough to knock over an empty can from more than 50 metres away. Firing that hard comes with serious kick, so Blastoise deliberately makes itself heavy and plants its feet before it shoots – and the same bulk lets it simply flatten an opponent beneath its body.
“It crushes its foe under its heavy body to cause fainting. In a pinch, it will withdraw inside its shell.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed, X, Sword & Legends: Z-A · 1996
Turn the jets around and they become rocket boosters: Blastoise can charge at a foe with all the force of a rocket and even launch itself into the air, which is quite a feat for an 85-kilogram turtle. Away from battle, though, it is a creature of calm freshwater ponds and lakes, where a single Blastoise may watch over a whole crowd of Squirtle and Wartortle. In a pinch it retreats into its shell – which is also where it sleeps most soundly.
Two special forms crank the firepower even higher. Mega Blastoise swaps its twin cannons for one enormous back cannon said to rival a tank gun, plus a cannon on each arm, while Gigantamax Blastoise turns its shell into a battleship of 31 cannons. It is not much of a marksman in that form – but when you have that many guns, aiming is optional.
Blastoise has been part of Pokémon from the very start, the final form of one of the three Kanto first partners in Red & Green, and it became the face of Pokémon Blue, staring out from the box in Japan and around the world. Red, the hero of those first games, still keeps one on his team. For many fans it is the steady, armour-plated anchor of the original trio: less flashy than Charizard, perhaps, but built like a tank and every bit as iconic.
How big is Blastoise?

At 1.6 m (5′03″) Blastoise can look plenty of adults straight in the eye, and at 85.5 kg (188.5 lb) it weighs about as much as a burly grown man – shell, cannons and all. Gigantamax Blastoise, at 25 m or more, stands as tall as an eight-storey building.

Capture Styler (Pokémon Ranger series)
Generation VII

The cannon on its back is as powerful as a tank gun. Its tough legs and back enable it to withstand the recoil from firing the cannon.
Let's Go Pokédex
Generation VIII
It's not very good at precision shooting. When attacking, it just fires its 31 cannons over and over and over.
Water fired from this Pokémon's central main cannon has enough power to blast a hole into a mountain.
Generation IX

It deliberately increases its body weight so it can withstand the recoil of the water jets it fires.
Rotom Phone (Scarlet & Violet)

It has jet nozzles on its shell. This impressive Pokémon uses these jets to charge toward foes with all the force of a rocket.

Sprites through the ages
Spin-offs & cameos
Super Smash Bros.
Blastoise has never been a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros., but it has been part of the furniture since the very first game. In the original it bursts out of a Poké Ball to fire Hydro Pump in one direction – each blast shoves Blastoise backwards a little, so anyone standing behind it is in danger too – and it did the same in Melee, which also gave it a trophy hailing it as the ideal Water type. It came close to more: for Brawl it was considered as a fighter alongside Charizard and Ivysaur, but director Masahiro Sakurai picked Squirtle instead to spread the Pokémon Trainer's team across the evolutionary stages. Since then Blastoise has been a background star of the Kalos Pokémon League stage in Smash for Wii U and Ultimate, splashing about in the Flood Chamber with Wailord, Piplup and Clawitzer. The 3DS and Wii U games gave both Blastoise and Mega Blastoise trophies – the American text reckons it would make a better firefighter than a fire truck – and Ultimate turned it into a Spirit, whose battle pits you against a giant Squirtle on Delfino Plaza. Squirtle, meanwhile, fights on as part of the Pokémon Trainer's team in Brawl and Ultimate.
Pokémon GO
Blastoise has been in Pokémon GO since launch day in 2016, and as a buddy it earns Candy every 3 km. Its big day came on 8 July 2018, when Squirtle Community Day debuted the Shiny forms of the whole family, any Wartortle evolved into Blastoise during the event learned the exclusive Hydro Cannon, and event Field Research rewarded sunglasses-wearing Squirtle that keep their shades all the way to Blastoise. A Community Day Classic on 9 July 2023 (with a make-up day on 23 July after login problems) brought Hydro Cannon and the sunglasses back, and the move also turned up on clone Blastoise raid bosses. Skull Bash joined its move pool in July 2019 and Rollout in March 2025. Mega Blastoise arrived with Mega Evolution itself on 27 August 2020 – its first Mega Evolution costs 200 Mega Energy, with later ones much cheaper – and Gigantamax Blastoise debuted alongside Gigantamax Venusaur and Charizard in the GO Bigger event of 26–27 October 2024, as a six-star Max Battle boss at Power Spots that takes a team of up to 40 Trainers to bring down, with a chance of a Shiny. You can meet Blastoise as a Shadow Pokémon, too.
You won't catch one on the tables – Blastoise only joins your Pokédex when you evolve a Wartortle.
Bursts out of a Poké Ball to fire Hydro Pump in one direction – and each blast nudges Blastoise backwards, so fighters standing behind it aren't safe either.
Blastoise fights in full 3D and gets its own Stadium Pokédex entry, describing shell spouts that spray water hard enough to pierce concrete walls.
Its Pokédex entry switches between the Gold and Silver texts depending on which cartridge you plug in.
Back in a Poké Ball with Hydro Pump, and honoured with a trophy that hails it as the ideal Water type.
A rare piece that turns up in Endless mode (Level 73), Forever mode (Level 23) and Mr. Who's Den.
Hot-headed Blastoise leads Team Hydro and joins the mission to save Team A.C.T. from Magma Cavern. Recruit one deep in Western Cave (B89F–B98F) and it settles in Turtleshell Pond.
Fiore Browser #078 turns up in Fall City; once captured, it lends a hand with its Soak field move.
Wild Blastoise wait on the lower floors of Lake Afar (B17F–B24F).
Almia Browser #013 lives in Vien Forest, attacking with water blasted from the cannons on its back.
Still waiting at Lake Afar in the expanded Explorers adventure.
Blastoise used to guard the Granite Zone before moving to the Beach Zone to train – and it does best of all on Empoleon's Snow Slide.
Oblivia Browser #294 waits at Silver Falls, spitting bubbles that slow Pokémon down; its field move is Soak.
Win it as a reward from the Dream Gate's Wet and Wild Battle, or meet it in the Variety Battle 'A Battle in the Tower'.
Found in Stage 5 of the Blade-and-Shield Path; its True Strength skill hits harder when your energy is down to half or less.
Splashes about in the background of the Kalos Pokémon League stage's Flood Chamber, and both Blastoise and Mega Blastoise get trophies.
Found in Expert Stage EX8. With Blastoisinite it Mega Evolves, and Mega Blastoise's effect erases every Pokémon within two spaces of a match.
Found at Pearl Marsh, and lurking as the back boss at Pearl Lake.
Complete Blastoise's Connection Orb mission to recruit it – 'Count on my water spouts!' – and Mega Blastoise appears in the game too.
Solve Area 21, Stage 08 to catch it; its Blue Force skill turns hint numbers blue, and Mega Blastoise returns as a tougher Hyper-rank puzzle.
In from launch day, with a Squirtle Community Day, sunglasses-wearing Blastoise, Mega Blastoise raids and Gigantamax Blastoise Max Battles.
A downloadable Battle Pokémon on Switch that fights with Water Gun, Rapid Spin, Water Spout and Hydro Pump – then Mega Evolves in Synergy Burst to fire its Burst Attack, Destructive Cannon.
Still splashing about in the Kalos Pokémon League background, and a Spirit whose battle pits you against a giant Squirtle on Delfino Plaza.
Turns up across many Seas, from the Charizard, Gengar, Garchomp and Mewtwo Seas to the Bulbasaur Sea.
Hatch it from an Egg, or scout it as a sync pair: Blue teams up with a Blastoise that can Mega Evolve, and Leaf has a Blastoise sync pair too.
Wild Blastoise wait high up on Mt. Faraway (50F–59F).
Photodex #100: find it on Blushing Beach by day or at Maricopia Reef in the evening – and keep your camera ready for when it rockets into the air on its water jets.
A ranged Defender that starts every match as Squirtle, evolving into Wartortle at Lv. 5 and Blastoise at Lv. 7.
A Slumbering-type ingredient specialist that brings back Moomoo Milk, Soothing Cacao and Bean Sausage, with sleep styles from Sheltered Sleep to Atop-Belly Sleep.
Cordy's Blastoise is your opponent in the very first battle tutorial, and the 2026 Pokémon NAIC Blastoise was handed out online in June 2026.
Pokopia #009 has the Water and Trade specialties, loves humid habitats, sour flavours and lots of water – and has a soft spot for a little luxury.
Moves
In Red and Green, Blastoise's moveset was compact: just eight moves by level-up, from Tackle, Tail Whip, Bubble and Water Gun through Bite, Withdraw and Skull Bash to a level-52 Hydro Pump, plus 27 TMs and HMs ranging from Ice Beam and Earthquake to Surf and Strength. Gold and Silver added Rapid Spin, Protect and Rain Dance (and made you wait until level 68 for Hydro Pump), FireRed and LeafGreen brought the mighty Hydro Cannon, and Diamond and Pearl put Flash Cannon, Water Pulse and Aqua Tail into the level-up list.
X and Y gave it Mega Blastoise, whose Mega Launcher turns Water Pulse, Dark Pulse, Dragon Pulse and Aura Sphere into heavy artillery, and Sword and Shield streamlined the lot: Flash Cannon on evolving, Rapid Spin at 9, a daring Shell Smash at 35, plus G-Max Cannonade for Gigantamax Blastoise. Scarlet and Violet swap the closing Skull Bash for the 120-power Wave Crash and stretch the TM list to 53 entries, while Legends: Z-A rewrites the script once more with cooldowns, Hydro Pump on evolving and a level-45 Liquidation finale.
Signature moves
The cannon blast that capped Red and Blue's list at level 52 is in every Blastoise level-up list ever made: Gold and Silver kept you waiting until level 68, Sword and Shield bring it at 49, and in Legends: Z-A it comes the moment Blastoise evolves. In 3D games before X and Y, Blastoise was the only Pokémon to fire Hydro Pump as two streams, and The Indigo Disk brought the double blast back.
A head-first charge since Red and Blue (level 42, or TM40). X and Y beefed it up to 130 power, it closes the list in Let's Go (level 75) and Sword and Shield (56), and Legends: Z-A turns it into a 150-power TM.
Gold and Silver added this spinning-shell trick at level 25. Sword and Shield moved it right up to level 9 and more than doubled its power, from 20 to 50.
Fitting for a Pokémon with two cannons, this Steel-type beam joined Blastoise's starting set in Diamond and Pearl, and from Sword and Shield onwards Blastoise learns it the instant it evolves.
Blastoise's boldest trick, learnt at level 35 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet: it cracks open its own defences in exchange for a big boost to power and speed.
A TM in Ruby and Sapphire and a level-up move from Diamond and Pearl to Scarlet and Violet (Let's Go aside), this ring of water gets a 50% power boost from Mega Blastoise's Mega Launcher, just like Dark Pulse, Dragon Pulse and Aura Sphere.
The ultimate Water-type attack: 150 power, then a turn to recharge. FireRed and LeafGreen's tutor at Cape Brink introduced it, every generation since has offered it by tutor, and Scarlet and Violet made it TM154 (TM159 in Legends: Z-A).

Blastoise is what your Squirtle grows into in Red, Green and Blue, evolving from Wartortle at level 36 (in Yellow, Officer Jenny hands you a Squirtle in Vermilion City). Its starting set includes Bubble and Water Gun; it learns Withdraw at 31 and Skull Bash at 42 and saves Hydro Pump for level 52. Bite is still a Normal-type move here, and in Generations I to III an attack's category follows its type, so every Water-type attack is special. The transfer list shows Gold and Silver moves a Blastoise can carry back to Kanto through the Time Capsule.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (plus Pokémon XD move tutors)14 level-up · 27 TM/HM · 8 egg · 19 tutor
FireRed and LeafGreen bring Blastoise home as your evolved Squirtle, while Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald need a trade or an event, such as the level-70 Blastoise of the 2006 Journey Across America tour and the Party of the Decade in the US. The level-up list is the same as in Gold and Silver, but FireRed and LeafGreen debut Hydro Cannon, the ultimate Water-type attack, taught by a move tutor at Cape Brink. Emerald and Pokémon XD add tutors of their own, and Water Pulse and Dive arrive as TM03 and HM08.

Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver18 level-up · 43 TM/HM · 13 egg · 13 tutor
In HeartGold and SoulSilver you can raise one from the Squirtle Professor Oak gives you after you defeat Red; Diamond, Pearl and Platinum have no Blastoise of their own, so it comes across through Pal Park. From this generation every move has its own physical or special category. Flash Cannon joins the starting set, fitting for a Pokémon with two cannons, Water Pulse and Aqua Tail arrive at 28 and 32, and Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver slot Iron Defense in at level 46, pushing Rain Dance and Hydro Pump back to 53 and 60. Hydro Cannon is taught in all five games, and Water Spout is an egg move in HeartGold and SoulSilver only, chain-bred through Remoraid.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire18 level-up · 43 TM/HM · 16 egg · 14 tutor · 1 event
In X and Y, Professor Sycamore offers you a Squirtle at his Lumiose City lab, and Blastoise gains a Mega Evolution. Mega Blastoise's Mega Launcher boosts pulse and aura moves by 50%, so Water Pulse, Dark Pulse (new as TM97), Dragon Pulse and Aura Sphere, a new egg move passed down from Clawitzer, suddenly hit much harder. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire need a trade or an event, such as the level-100 Pokémon Scrap Blastoise given away online in Japan in 2016. Water Gun and Bubble swap places, Skull Bash rises to 130 power and Hydro Pump drops to 110. TM94 is Rock Smash in X and Y but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Rock Smash and Dive return as HM06 and HM07.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon18 level-up · 37 TM/HM · 16 egg · 15 tutor
Sun and Moon have no Blastoise of their own, but in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon an Island Scan on a Monday can turn up a Squirtle to raise. From Bite onwards each level-up move arrives one level later than in X and Y, so Iron Defense comes at 47 and Rain Dance at 54, while Hydro Pump stays at 60. With HMs gone, Surf and Waterfall become TM94 and TM98, and the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon tutors add the hard-hitting Liquidation.

Wild Squirtle live on Routes 24 and 25 and in the Seafoam Islands, and there is a one-off Squirtle to collect in Vermilion City; Blastoise itself only comes from evolving Wartortle. This Blastoise starts out knowing Flash Cannon, Fake Out and Aqua Jet as well as the family basics, learns Bubble Beam at 33 and Headbutt at 54, then finishes with Hydro Pump at 65 and Skull Bash at 75. There is no breeding and there are no move tutors in these games.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl16 level-up · 94 TM/HM · 22 egg · 4 tutor
Blastoise joined Sword and Shield with Version 1.2.0, by trade, through Wild Area News (a Gigantamax Blastoise raid ran in February 2022) or by raising a Squirtle; the Expansion Pass offers a Squirtle with the Gigantamax Factor at the Master Dojo, and Blastoise also turns up in Max Raid Battles in the Workout Sea and Stepping-Stone Sea. Gigantamax Blastoise turns its Water-type attacks into G-Max Cannonade. The level-up list is streamlined: Flash Cannon on evolving, Rapid Spin at 9 with 50 power, Shell Smash at 35 and Skull Bash as the finale at 56. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Squirtle lives in the Grand Underground once you have the National Pokédex. Blastoise does not appear in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Generation IX · Scarlet & Violet (Version 3.0.0+ / The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero)15 level-up · 53 TM/HM · 9 egg
Blastoise reached Scarlet and Violet with Version 3.0.0: it can be traded in, and in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero you can raise one from the Squirtle in the Terarium's Canyon Biome once its biodiversity has been boosted. The Indigo Disk even brought back its special two-stream Hydro Pump animation. The level-up list follows Sword and Shield's, except that Flash Cannon is learnt only on evolving and the 120-power Wave Crash replaces Skull Bash at 56. Hydro Cannon is now TM154 and Water Pledge TM145. Poké Portal News has also brought Blastoise the Unrivaled, a level-100 Steel Tera Type, to Tera Raid Battles in March 2024 and January 2026.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A · Legends: Z-A (incl. Mega Dimension)12 level-up · 45 TM/HM
Mable at the Pokémon Research Lab in the Vert District gives you a Squirtle during Side Mission 22, wild ones live in Wild Zone 20, and the Mega Dimension expansion adds wild Blastoise to the 4★ and 5★ Water-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose. Moves run on cooldowns instead of PP, so the tables show the level at which a move is learnt, the level at which it becomes a Plus Move, its power and its cooldown. Blastoise learns Hydro Pump and Flash Cannon the moment it evolves, picks up Bubble Beam, Icy Wind, Aqua Ring and Aqua Jet along the way and ends with Liquidation at 45. Skull Bash returns as a 150-power TM and Hydro Cannon is TM159.

Blastoise in the anime
Debut EP017Island of the Giant Pokémon · First major role EP060Beach Blank-Out Blastoise · Its appearances on screen, and 10 other trainers who raised one.
Blastoise has never travelled with Ash – his Squirtle stayed a Squirtle – yet the Shellfish Pokémon has been one of the anime's great heavyweights from the very start. Its first proper starring role was as the snoozing king of an island of Squirtle and Wartortle, with a Jigglypuff wedged in one of its cannons (EP060). It carried Cissy through the surf in an Orange Islands Gym race, and its finest hour came at the Silver Conference, when Gary's long-secret first partner was revealed as a Blastoise and flattened Heracross and Bayleef before Ash's Charizard finally brought it down in one of the most personal battles of the series.
Away from that famous rivalry, Blastoise has been a dancer, a firefighter and a Mega-Evolved powerhouse. Tierno's light-footed Blastoise grooved its way to the Lumiose Conference quarter-finals, Captain Aidan's Team Blastoise tackled the biggest blazes, and Elite Four member Siebold's Mega Blastoise handed Alain a rare defeat. Neesha's Shellshocker faced Mewtwo's cloned Blastoise in Mewtwo Strikes Back, Jessie borrowed one to ambush Pikachu, and in the game-inspired series Blue's and Green's Blastoise battle for the Champion title and against Mewtwo – while Gary's faithful partner was still going strong in Journeys, taking on Moltres and helping catch Regidrago.

Evolved: EP269The Ties That Bind
Gary kept his first partner under wraps for the whole of Kanto and Johto, so when he sent out a Blastoise in his Silver Conference Full Battle with Ash, Misty and Brock quickly realised what they were looking at – this was the Squirtle he had picked at Professor Oak's lab (EP269). His strongest Pokémon lived up to the billing: Hydro Pump smashed straight through the boulder Heracross was hiding behind, Rapid Spin batted away Sludge Bomb and Razor Leaf, Muk had to be recalled and Bayleef was sent flying (EP270). Only Charizard could stop it, heating the rocky field until Blastoise's Hydro Pump hissed into steam, then getting in too close for its cannons and finishing it with Seismic Toss – Ash's first win over Gary in a traditional battle. When Gary swapped battling for research, Blastoise stayed at his side: it sliced Pikachu free of a Team Rocket net (EP272), took on Pokémon Hunter J's Salamence with Hydro Cannon (DP045), and in Journeys it rescued Ash and Goh from an Onix, went toe-to-toe with a wild Moltres (JN068) and teamed up with Goh's Cinderace on a Project Mew mission that ended with Gary catching Regidrago (JN113).

Tierno chose Squirtle as his first partner from Professor Sycamore, and the pair love to dance their way through a battle – as a Squirtle it out-stepped a hulking Conkeldurr and finished it with Skull Bash (XY039). By Kalos Quest it was a full-grown Blastoise with its rhythm intact: in a Tag Battle alongside Pikachu its battle dance was so catchy that Serena's Eevee started copying it, slipping past Water Gun and landing Swift before Serena called time to rehearse (XY090). At the Lumiose Conference quarter-finals Blastoise shrugged off Slurpuff's Attract and washed it away with Hydro Cannon, then survived Sceptile's Leaf Blade before Frenzy Plant hurled it skywards – it summoned Rain Dance as it fell to give Raichu a fighting chance, though Sawyer won through (XY126). It later helped stand up to Team Flare when they seized Lumiose City (XY132).

Siebold, the Elite Four's resident chef, welcomed Alain and Mairin into his restaurant and led them from the kitchen straight to his battlefield. Blastoise's opening Hydro Pumps couldn't catch Alain's Mega Charizard X, so Siebold touched his Key Stone and served up Mega Blastoise. Powered by Mega Launcher, its Dragon Pulse knocked Charizard out of the sky, and its Power-Up Punch met a Flamethrower head-on; Charizard clung to its shell for a close-range Dragon Claw, but one last Dragon Pulse finished the battle (XYS01). It was a rare defeat for Alain, and Siebold came away impressed by his young challenger.

Cissy, the first Orange Crew Gym Leader Ash faced, set two water-based tests for the Coral-Eye Badge. After Squirtle and Seadra tied the Water Gun shooting gallery, it came down to a Wave Ride: each Trainer rode their Pokémon out round a buoy and back to the beach, Cissy on Blastoise and Ash on Lapras. Blastoise had already helped Pikachu blast Team Rocket away with Hydro Pump before the start, and it rounded the flag first – but Ash had Lapras freeze a track with Ice Beam and skate home for the narrowest of wins (EP085). Cissy's Blastoise is remembered in flashbacks later in the Orange Islands (EP098, EP111, EP113).

Neesha braved the storm on her Dewgong to answer Mewtwo's invitation, and her Blastoise, Shellshocker, became one of the three fully evolved first partners matched against Mewtwo's clones. Mewtwo's clone Blastoise won with Rapid Spin, and Shellshocker was swept up in Mewtwo's Poké Balls with the rest of the Trainers' Pokémon until Ash broke them out of the cloning machine (M01). It plays the same part in the 2019 remake (M22). In the alternate world of I Choose You! a Blastoise of Neesha's froze Corey's Gengar solid with Ice Beam before trading blows with his Venusaur (M20).

In Pokémon Origins, Blue's Wartortle has grown into a Blastoise by the time Red challenges him for the Champion title. It anchored his team, knocking out Red's Persian and Jolteon and shrugging off a point-blank Mega Punch from Charizard before a super-effective Hydro Pump left the Fire-type barely standing. Red answered by trapping it in Fire Spin; Blastoise swatted the flames aside, only for Fire Blast to finish it and crown Red Champion (PO04). In Pokémon Generations it was Blastoise's Hydro Pump and Skull Bash against Lance's Dragonite that carried Blue to the Champion's seat – just in time for Red to walk in (PG03).

In the final chapter of Pokémon Evolutions, Green rode her Blastoise across the underground lake of Cerulean Cave, brushing aside a wild Poliwhirl and Poliwrath on the way. When she finally met Elaine and her newly caught Mewtwo, she Mega Evolved Blastoise and opened fire with volley after volley of Hydro Pump – all stopped by Protect. Mewtwo's Psychic hurled Mega Blastoise into a rock, forcing it back to normal, and an Aura Sphere finished it; Green admitted defeat and offered Elaine the Mega Stones (PE08).

Posing as staff at a Battle Park closed for repairs, Team Rocket lured Ash into a three-round challenge against the park's rental Kanto heavyweights – a line-up the Japanese title proudly spells out. After James's Venusaur beat Cyndaquil and Jessie's Charizard fell to Totodile, Jessie sent Blastoise in against Pikachu. It hid behind Withdraw and fired back with Hydro Pump and Bubble, but Pikachu broke free and split the ground with Thunder, and the knocked-out Blastoise toppled onto Jessie (EP248). The rentals, it turned out, only obeyed inside the park – and once Team Rocket's real plan was exposed, Blastoise joined Venusaur and Charizard in blasting them off.

Sid came to LaRousse City's Battle Tower with his friends – and a soft spot for May – and Blastoise was his go-to battler. Teamed with Rafe's Blaziken, it helped beat Ash's Pikachu and Tory's borrowed Torkoal in a Battle Tower Double Battle. When Deoxys's clones swept through the city, Sid was captured shielding May; once he was rescued, Blastoise's Hydro Pump set the city's windmills spinning to bring the power back (M07).

Ash & Blastoise
Ash has never owned a Blastoise – his Squirtle never evolved and went on to lead the Squirtle Squad – but the Shellfish Pokémon has stood in his way at some big moments. He beat Cissy's Blastoise in a Wave Ride on Lapras for the Coral-Eye Badge (EP085), Pikachu thundered past Jessie's Battle Park rental (EP248), and his Charizard finally toppled Gary's Blastoise to win their Silver Conference Full Battle (EP270) – the same Blastoise that later saved Ash and Goh from an attacking Onix (JN068).
Mega & Gigantamax Blastoise on screen
Mega Blastoise has one proper anime battle – Siebold's victory over Alain's Mega Charizard X in the first Mega Evolution Special – plus cameos, and Green's Mega Blastoise takes on Mewtwo in Pokémon Evolutions. Gigantamax Blastoise has yet to appear on screen; G-Max Cannonade remains a games-only spectacle.

Anime trivia
- Can't Beat the Heat! (EP270) wears its showdown on its sleeve: the Japanese title translates as 'Rival Confrontation! Kamex VS Lizardon!!' – the Japanese names of Blastoise and Charizard.
- Mid-battle in EP270, Gary complains that Charizard is too close for Blastoise to aim its 'hydro cannons' – before Hydro Cannon existed as a move. It arrived in Generation III, and Gary's Blastoise finally used it in Sinnoh (DP045).
- Blastoise's voice in the Super Smash Bros. series has anime roots: the Japanese Smash Bros. and Melee use its cry from the Japanese Who's That Pokémon? in EP060, while the English Melee uses its line from Cissy's Gym battle (EP085).
- In Japanese, Gary's Blastoise was voiced by Unshō Ishizuka – also the voice of Gary's grandfather, Professor Oak. After Ishizuka's death, Tsuguo Mogami took over the role from Advice to Goh! (JN068).
- VIZ Media named Volume 5 of its Pokémon All-Stars DVD line after Blastoise; it includes both The Ties That Bind (EP269) and Judgment Day! (AG092).
- Both of the anime's best-known Blastoise began as a Squirtle given out by a regional Professor – Gary's by Professor Oak and Tierno's by Professor Sycamore – and both evolved twice off-screen.
- Tierno's Blastoise was immune to Sawyer's Slurpuff's Attract at the Lumiose Conference for a simple reason: both Pokémon are male (XY126).
- Blastoise's jaw is a recurring colouring slip: its cream lower jaw has been mistakenly painted blue in EP269, EP270, XY090, SM027 and the GOTCHA! music video – and even the robot Blastoise of EP017 has a miscoloured jaw.
“Blastoise, the Shellfish Pokémon. The evolved form of Wartortle. Blastoise's strength lies in its power, rather than its speed. Its shell is like armor and attacks from the hydro cannon on its back are virtually unstoppable.”

Blastoise in the movies
8 films, 1 Pikachu short and 1 special featuring Blastoise.
Blastoise was cast in the very first Pokémon film, and its debut went badly. Neesha's Shellshocker is spun into submission by Mewtwo's clone Blastoise in Mewtwo Strikes Back, then carried off in one of Mewtwo's Poké Balls, and it has the same rotten luck in the 2019 CGI remake, where at least it gets a Skull Bash in first. The alternate timeline of I Choose You! gives Neesha's Blastoise a better day, freezing Corey's Gengar in a League final that Ash watches on TV. Elsewhere Blastoise is a loyal heavy-lifter: Sid's Blastoise helps force open doors for fleeing crowds in Destiny Deoxys, and Brock's mum Lola has one to fish her husband's Golem out of the water. Its biggest TV moment is the first Mega Evolution Special, where Elite Four member Siebold's Mega Blastoise stops Alain's Mega Charizard X with a Mega Launcher-boosted Dragon Pulse. There are also cameos in The Power of One, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew and Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction, and a photorealistic Blastoise brawling with a Gengar in Detective Pikachu's underground fight club.

Neesha's Blastoise (Shellshocker); Mewtwo's clone Blastoise
Neesha (Sweet in Japanese) is one of the few Trainers who brave the storm to reach New Island, and her Blastoise, Shellshocker, is sent out against Mewtwo's own Blastoise. It's no contest: the clone pulls into its shell and spins into Shellshocker with Rapid Spin, a move the games didn't even have yet, and wins easily. Mewtwo then snatches Shellshocker in one of its own Poké Balls along with Ash's Charizard and Corey's Venusaur, and it stays a prisoner until the cloning machine blows apart and frees every captured Pokémon. Once Mewtwo wipes everyone's memories, Neesha and her team find themselves back at Old Shore Wharf.

Neesha's Blastoise (on TV)
The anniversary retelling of Ash's first journey brings Neesha back for a cameo. Ash watches on TV as she battles Corey in the final round of a Pokémon League Conference, and her Blastoise freezes Corey's Gengar with Ice Beam, and Corey recalls it. Out comes Venusaur, and the two slug it out (Blastoise's moves include Hydro Pump and Skull Bash) with both still standing when the film moves on, so the winner is never revealed. Nobody says whether this Blastoise is still called Shellshocker in the new timeline.

Neesha's Blastoise (Shellshocker); Mewtwo's clone Blastoise
The CGI remake gives Shellshocker the same bad day as in 1998, but lets it put up more of a fight. Neesha, Corey and Ash send out Blastoise, Venusaur and Charizard against Mewtwo's clone trio, and this time Shellshocker meets the clone head-on with Skull Bash before the same Rapid Spin knocks it out. When Mewtwo's Poké Balls swoop in, the Trainers no longer stand frozen in shock: Neesha and Corey try to block the balls and snatch their partners back, and Ash leaps after his. Team Rocket later spot the clone Blastoise, Venusaur and Charizard waiting in Mewtwo's hidden cloning lab.

Blastoise in the Pokémon TCG
63 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Blastoise has been firing on all cannons since day one. It was a holo rare in Japan's very first Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reached English players in Base Set in January 1999, where its Rain Dance power (attach as many Water Energy as you like, every single turn) fuelled 'Raindance', one of the defining decks of the early game. The idea keeps getting reloaded: Energy Rain on Blastoise ex in 2004, Waterlog, Deluge in the Black & White era, Powerful Squall and Giant Geyser-GX. Along the way Blastoise has tried on almost every special card type going: a Team Rocket Dark Blastoise, a Fighting- and Metal-type Delta Species, Pokémon-ex and Pokémon-EX, one of the very first Mega Evolution cards, a GX, a TAG TEAM with Piplup, Blastoise V and Gigantamax Blastoise VMAX, a Shiny Radiant Blastoise and Blastoise ex in 151, with its HP more than tripling from 100 to 330.
The art tells the same story of growing up. Ken Sugimori's clean official artwork defined the Base Set card (and a Japan-only mail-in promo), Mitsuhiro Arita drew its villainous Dark twin, and the e-Card and EX years brought a parade of illustrators from Kimiya Masago to Kouki Saitou, with Japan adding curiosities such as Clair's Blastoise and a movie-pack Blastoise belonging to Sid. The XY era switched to glossy CG from Eske Yoshinob and 5ban Graphics, Full Arts let Blastoise fill the whole card, and Shiny versions popped up in Plasma Storm and Pokémon GO. Arita came back for 151's Special Illustration Rare, and TCG Pocket keeps the cannons busy with Mega Blastoise ex, a Special Illustration Rare by Kazumasa Yasukuni and a welcome return for Hitoshi Ariga's Team Up art.

- Base Set 2/102 — Ken Sugimori's original holo and the engine of the legendary 'Raindance' deck. It was also the very first card ever test-printed for the English game, a secret that only came out in 2020.
- Team Rocket 3/82 (Dark Blastoise) — Mitsuhiro Arita's villainous twin, a Level 28 brute whose Hydrocannon swells with every spare Water Energy. It came back as an oversized box topper in Legendary Collection boxes.
- XY 30/146 (M Blastoise-EX) — History in a single card: with M Venusaur-EX, one of the first two Mega Evolution cards the TCG ever printed.
- Plasma Storm 137/135 — A Secret Rare that repaints the Deluge Blastoise as a Shiny, in Ayaka Yoshida's art.
- SWSH103 (Blastoise VMAX) — Gigantamax Blastoise's only English card: a 330 HP colossus whose G-Max Bombard hits for 220 and splashes the Bench too.
- 151 200/165 (Blastoise ex SIR) — Mitsuhiro Arita, who drew Dark Blastoise in the Team Rocket days, returns for the Special Illustration Rare, one of the three Kanto starter chase cards of the hugely popular 151 set.

Blastoise in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
Blastoise has been a manga star since the earliest days. In Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters, Blue's swaggering Blastoise is forever being outwitted by Red's Clefairy, which once beat it by jamming its cannons, while in Pokémon Adventures Green's tricky Blasty flies on its own water jets, learns Hydro Cannon and finally Mega Evolves beside Red's Saur against Maxie and Archie. Pokémon Zensho makes Blastoise the Champion's partner in the final battle, Magical Pokémon Journey gives Squirtle two Blastoise big sisters, and The Golden Boys has a rampaging Blastoise that has ruled the Whirl Islands for a hundred years. On the bookshelf it rides the waves for Cissy in The Four-Star Challenge and joins Gary's team in Talent Showdown, about two years before the anime gave him one. It's in the English Pokérap (played by a robot, as it happens), squares up to Ethan's Ampharos in the GOTCHA! video, shared the finale of the 30th-anniversary countdown in 2026, and has been turning up in fast-food toy boxes since Burger King's water-squirter of 1999.

Blastoise trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Blastoise such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Blastoise does exactly what it says on the shell: it is 'blast', for the water cannons that are its trademark, plus 'tortoise'. Its Japanese name, Kamex (Kamekkusu), joins kame – tortoise or turtle – with makkusu, borrowed from the English 'max': the maximum turtle, a fitting title for the final stage of the Squirtle line. Other languages lean into its firepower just as hard. French players know it as Tortank, from tortue (tortoise) and tank; Korea calls it Geobugwang, the 'turtle king'; and in Chinese it is Shuǐjiànguī, the water-rocket turtle.
Design origins
Blastoise is a turtle crossed with a tank: the shell is the armour plating and the two shoulder cannons are the guns – a pairing its French name, Tortank, spells out. Ken Sugimori is credited with the design, and an early Capsule Monsters sketch of his shows the idea already taking shape: a cannon-less, Blastoise-like creature called 'Karabajio' squaring off against a Staryu-like 'Mimī'. Its later forms push the war-machine theme even further. Mega Blastoise's single, huge back cannon is likened to a tank gun, while Gigantamax Blastoise's shell becomes a battleship bristling with 31 cannons – a look that may also nod to Leonardo da Vinci's design for an armoured fighting vehicle, itself inspired by a turtle's shell.

Did you know?
- Blastoise's anime debut wasn't even real: in The Ghost of Maiden's Peak, Ash sends out Squirtle and Bulbasaur, and a Gastly answers by conjuring up a Blastoise and a Venusaur – then fusing them into one creature.
- Blastoise shares the Shellfish Pokémon category with Kabuto and Kabutops – odd for a turtle, though its Japanese category is closer to simply 'Shell'.
- Mega Blastoise is the only Mega-Evolved first partner Pokémon with a single type.
- In Generation II, Blastoise and its pre-evolutions were the only Pokémon that learned Skull Bash naturally; other Pokémon could only get it through breeding.
- In the 3D games before X and Y, Blastoise's Hydro Pump had its own animation, with water gushing from both cannons. X and Y dropped it, but it came back in Scarlet and Violet's The Indigo Disk.
- The Base Set Blastoise card was the first Pokémon to appear on the test prints for the English Trading Card Game.
- Mega Blastoise and Mega Venusaur, from the XY expansion, were the very first Mega Evolution cards in the Trading Card Game.
- Blastoise was considered as a fighter for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but Masahiro Sakurai picked Squirtle so the Pokémon Trainer's team would cover every evolutionary stage.
- Red, the hero of the original games, brings a Blastoise to almost every battle you fight against him – a nod to its place on the Pokémon Blue box.
- Its flight in New Pokémon Snap, rocketing into the air on its water jets, may be a nod to Gamera, the flying giant turtle of Japanese monster films.
- Gigantamax Blastoise's 31 cannons include 12 around the main cannon that can each be aimed in any direction – and legend says the main cannon can blast holes through mountains.
- Mega Blastoise's main cannon is said to rival a tank gun, with a range of more than 10 km (6 miles); its strengthened legs and back soak up the recoil.
- In Pokkén Tournament DX, Mega Blastoise pins itself to the ground with Ice Beam from its arm cannons before unleashing its Burst Attack, Destructive Cannon.
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team, Blastoise leads Team Hydro – and it is so quick to anger that Charizard of Team A.C.T. uses its temper to fire up the troops.
- In Pokémon Sleep it normally dozes tucked safely inside its shell; catching one asleep belly-up is rare, and means it feels completely secure.
- In Pokémon Champions, the very first battle tutorial pits you against Cordy's Blastoise.
