XY—Flashfire brought the heat on May 7, 2014 as the second set of the XY series — and it is remembered, above all, as the Charizard set. Adapted from Japan’s Wild Blaze (ワイルドブレイズ, March 15, 2014) and expanded to 109 cards, it delivered the TCG debut of Mega Charizard in both game formae, cleverly split by type: Mega Charizard Y as a Fire-type (#13) and Mega Charizard X as a Dragon-type (#69). Seven Charizard-family EX cards in all made it a pack-opener’s dream.
Beyond the flashy holos, Flashfire quietly reshaped competitive play. It introduced Lysandre, the gust-of-wind Supporter that would dictate knockouts for years, alongside the uncrackable wall Pyroar and a deep Trainer toolbox. Its three gold-bordered secret Mega Charizards — headed by the coveted #108 Mega Charizard X — remain some of the most sought-after cards of the entire XY era.
From the official set description:
The fire rises! Mega Charizard blazes into the Pokémon TCG in two mighty formes, joined by Mega Kangaskhan and a cast of Kalos favourites. Command the flames, gust in your foes with Lysandre, and stand tall behind the wall of Pyroar — the XY Series burns brighter in Flashfire!
The Charizard Chase
Flashfire is, first and foremost, the Charizard set. It packs two base Charizard-EX (#11, #12), both Mega formae (#13 Y, #69 X), a Full Art Charizard-EX (#100), and two gold-secret Mega Charizards (#107 Y, #108 X) — seven Charizard-family EX cards in a single expansion. For the game’s enormous Charizard-collector fanbase, few pack-opening eras ever rivalled the thrill of pulling that gold #108.
X vs. Y: The Mega Roster Expands
Coming right after the XY base set introduced Mega Evolution, Flashfire doubled down by delivering the fan-favourite fire lizard in both game formae — and split them by TCG type to match the games: Mega Charizard Y as a Fire-type (#13) and Mega Charizard X as a Dragon-type (#69). Add Mega Kangaskhan (#79) and the set becomes an early showcase of how the TCG would translate the games’ Mega mechanic into distinct, collectible cards. (Note: there were still no Spirit Link Tools — Mega Evolving always ended your turn.)

Lysandre and the Trainer Toolbox
Beyond the flashy holos, Flashfire reshaped competitive play through its Trainers. Lysandre (#90) gave every deck an on-Supporter gust effect that dictated knockouts for years to come, while Startling Megaphone (#97), Ultra Ball (#99), Pokémon Center Lady (#93), Sacred Ash (#96) and Pal Pad (#92) rounded out a deep, practical support suite. This is a set whose commons and uncommons arguably mattered more to tournaments than its chase cards.
Pyroar and the Art of the Wall
Pyroar (#20) is one of the era’s cleverest tech cards — a Stage 1 whose Intimidating Mane Ability simply prevents all damage from the opponent’s Basic Pokémon. In a format ruled by Basic Pokémon-EX attackers, it was an uncrackable wall that spawned dedicated stall and mill decks and forced opponents to run Stage-1/Stage-2 attackers, Special Conditions or effect damage to answer it. The classic ‘rock’ to the format’s ‘scissors.’
Print Versions
XY Flashfire shipped in booster packs with four wrapper arts — the two Mega Charizards (X and Y), Mega Kangaskhan and Pyroar — plus two theme decks, Brilliant Thunder (Lightning) and Mystic Typhoon (Water/Dragon). The English set was built from the Japanese expansion Wild Blaze (ワイルドブレイズ), released March 15, 2014.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Flashfire is a Charizard collector’s paradise, topped by three gold-bordered secret Mega-EX. A note on values: PSA 10 populations for these 2014 cards are thin, so graded prices swing on a handful of sales — read the raw ranges as the steadier guide and the graded figures as estimates.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Flashfire’s competitive legacy lives in its Trainers and tech, not its dragons. These cards shaped the 2014–2015 metagame.
Trivia
- Two Mega Charizards, two different types. In one set you get Mega Charizard Y as a Fire-type (#13) and Mega Charizard X as a Dragon-type (#69) — a direct nod to their game typings. Collectors routinely mix up which number is which forme: X = #69 and #108, Y = #13 and #107.
- Seismitoad-EX is not in Flashfire. The infamous ‘Quaking Punch’ item-lock toad that defined 2014–2015 is from the next English set, Furious Fists (XY3) — Flashfire is frequently but wrongly credited with it.
- The three gold ‘secret prints.’ Cards #107, #108 and #109 are gold-bordered secret rares with golden attack text — reprints of the set’s three Mega-EX. The #108 Mega Charizard X gold is the single most valuable card in the set.
- Spirit Links didn’t start here. Many assume the Mega-support Spirit Link Tools arrived with the first Mega Charizards. They didn’t — Spirit Links debuted later, in Phantom Forces (XY4). In Flashfire, Mega Evolving always cost you your whole turn.
- The Japanese set was much smaller. The source set, Wild Blaze (Japanese XY2, March 15, 2014), had only an ~80-card base. English Flashfire expanded it to 106 cards plus three secret rares — a routine XY-era practice of padding Japanese sets for the international release.
