Great Bowls of Fire! is the 43rd episode of Pokémon: Master Quest, the fifth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 252nd episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 255, Bulbapedia code EP253). It first aired in Japan on 20 June 2002 and in the United States on 14 June 2003. It falls within the season’s Blackthorn City: the Rising Badge stretch (EP251–EP255).
Synopsis

It’s Charizard!! and he brought Liza with him. Team Rocket, not satisfied with the ancient dragon fang, also try to steal the golden bowl containing the Prayer Flame. They drop it and start a fire that quickly spreads. Defiling the prayer flame makes the dragonite realize their true nature and it goes berserk. He then goes into Attack Rage [Dragon Rage], a state of confusion where it cannot stop attacking, and will attack anything that moves. Now Claire, Liza, Ash, Misty, Brock, and the caretaker have their hands full putting out the fire, saving the pokémon, and calming the dragonite down. It takes the combined efforts of the dratini, Charizard and Pikachu to return the dragonite to its senses. Team Rocket is sent packing, and the ancient dragon fang is recovered.
Now that everything is restored to order as much as possible, Claire and Ash must start their battle over again… in the morning after a well-deserved rest.
Major Events
- Charizard returns
- Dragonite’s Outrage
Trivia
- The English title plays on Jerry Lee Lewis’s "Great Balls of Fire".
- The screenplay is by Atsuhiro Tomioka.
- This is a plot episode: it advances the Johto storyline.
- The Who’s That Pokémon? segment features Dragonite in Japan, where it almost always matched the episode, but Chinchou in the US, where 4Kids picked the Pokémon at random.
Changes in the English Dub
- Team Rocket motto variations and dub-only fourth-wall jokes (“Meowth has been dropped from the rest of the season”, EP265). Move-name errors: Headbutt → “Skull Bash” (EP216–217), Take Down (EP220), Outrage → “Attack Rage” (EP253), Bind → “Wrap”, Scary Face → “Leer” (EP271), Ice Beam → “Cold Beam” (EP257). The announcer repeatedly calls Harrison “from Silver Town” instead of Littleroot (EP270, EP272).
