Don’t let the size fool you. Stormfront, the seventh and final main expansion of the Diamond & Pearl era, was a compact 100-card set — but it packed a competitive wallop that echoed through tournament halls for years. Released in November 2008, it arrived with five new Pokémon LV.X, a fistful of soon-to-be-staple attackers, and a couple of surprises tucked into its secret slots.
The English release drew from Japan’s “Intense Fight in the Destroyed Sky,” and true to that name, its Pokémon hit hard. Two theme decks, Raging Sea and Dark Rampage, gave newcomers a way in, while the rare slots held some of the most influential cards the format would ever see.
For a small set, it left an outsized mark — so let’s talk about the cards that did the damage.
The Sky Darkens… The Earth Trembles… The Storm Is Coming!
A turbulent force is approaching, and it’s on a collision course with everything you thought you knew about the Pokémon TCG! In Diamond & Pearl—Stormfront, you are met head-on by powerful Pokémon unrestrained and never holding back! In this frenzy, you’ll find new Pokémon LV.X, Trainer cards that power up when played together, and the dramatic entrance of some of the most popular Pokémon ever! The time has come to enter the storm, and witness this awe-inspiring spectacle first hand!
— official Stormfront expansion blurb
A Small Set That Shaped a Metagame
Stormfront’s reputation rests on a handful of Pokémon that went on to anchor top-tier decks well into the following seasons. Chief among them was Machamp (20). Its Take Out attack cost a single Fighting Energy and did something brutal: any Defending Pokémon that wasn’t an Evolution was Knocked Out outright, no damage calculation required. In a metagame increasingly built on powerful Basic Pokémon, that was a death sentence — and “Machamp” became a defining counter-deck.
Gengar (18) offered a very different menace. Its Poltergeist attack dealt 30 damage for every Trainer, Supporter and Stadium card in the opponent’s hand — punishing exactly the resource-hoarding that good players relied on — while Shadow Room sniped the Bench and its Fainting Spell Poké-Power threatened to drag an attacker down with it. The “Gengar” control deck was born here.
And then there was Sableye (48), a humble Basic that quietly became one of the most important opening plays in the game. Its Overeager Poké-Body guaranteed you went first, and Impersonate let it fetch and fire off a Supporter card for free on turn one. For years, decks opened by leading with Sableye — a card whose entire job was to hand you a flying start.
Machamp (20/100)
The Basic-killer. Take Out costs one Fighting Energy and Knocks Out any non-Evolved Defending Pokémon outright, no damage roll needed — the anti-Basic tech that spawned a whole counter-deck.
Gengar (18/100)
A control engine. Poltergeist deals 30 damage for every Trainer, Supporter and Stadium in the opponent’s hand, Shadow Room snipes the Bench, and Fainting Spell can drag an attacker down on a coin flip.
Sableye (48/100)
The perfect opener. Overeager guarantees you go first, and Impersonate fetches a Supporter from your deck and fires it off for free — a turn-one head start that defined how decks were built.
Print Versions
Stormfront came in four booster designs, fronted by Dusknoir, Infernape, Regigigas and Torterra. Each pack held a shot at the set’s five Pokémon LV.X — and, if you were lucky, one of its hidden secret cards.

Five Pokémon LV.X
Stormfront handed out five Pokémon LV.X — Dusknoir, Heatran, Machamp, Raichu and Regigigas — and two of them stood out for just how strange, and how strong, they were.
Dusknoir LV.X (96) had one of the weirdest effects of the whole era. Its Ectoplasm Poké-Power let a Knocked-Out Dusknoir return as a Stadium card, sitting on the field and dropping a damage counter onto every one of your opponent’s Pokémon between turns — a slow, inevitable grind that kept working after the Pokémon itself was “gone.”
Regigigas LV.X (100) hit like a truck. Sacrifice let it consume one of your own Pokémon to reload Energy from the discard and heal itself, and Giga Blaster answered for 100 damage while stripping cards from the opponent’s deck and hand — devastating, if you could live with the fact that it couldn’t attack again the next turn.
Dusknoir LV.X (96/100)
One of the era’s strangest cards. When Knocked Out, Ectoplasm brings it back as a Stadium that quietly drops a damage counter on each of your opponent’s Pokémon every turn.
Regigigas LV.X (100/100)
A heavy hitter. Sacrifice burns one of your own Pokémon to reload Energy and heal, while Giga Blaster deals 100 and mills the opponent’s deck and hand — at the cost of skipping its next attack.
A Charizard and Three Shinies
The set’s official blurb promised “the dramatic entrance of some of the most popular Pokémon ever,” and it delivered with a nostalgic flourish: the Charmander line returned as secret rares, capped by Charizard (103/100) — a lovingly redrawn tribute to the legendary Base Set card, right down to its Energy Burn ability and Fire Spin attack.
Tucked even further back were three Shiny Pokémon — alternate-coloured versions of Drifloon, Duskull and Voltorb, numbered SH1 through SH3. These glittering secret cards were pure collector bait, a shiny-hunter’s dream slipped into an otherwise combat-focused set.
Charizard (103/100)
A secret-rare love letter to the Base Set classic. Redrawn in a modern frame, it keeps Energy Burn and the four-Energy Fire Spin that made the original the most coveted card of the 1990s.
Shiny Voltorb (SH3)
One of three Shiny secret cards — alternate-coloured Drifloon, Duskull and Voltorb — hidden at the very end of the set for the dedicated collector.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Stormfront (DP7, Nov 2008) is a chase-heavy 106-card set headlined by its secret-rare Charizard line (#101-103) and five Lv.X cards, with a three-card Shiny ‘SH’ subset (Drifloon, Duskull, Voltorb) and the fan-favorite Gengar #18 rounding out the hits. Gem-mint PSA 10s are genuinely scarce and command steep premiums.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Stormfront reshaped the 2008-2010 Modified metagame as the great counter to the dominant Pokemon SP decks. Machamp punished Basic-heavy SP builds, Gengar anchored a top-tier disruption deck, and its Lv.X cards powered damage-control and aggressive archetypes.
Trivia
- Stormfront was the final main expansion of the Diamond & Pearl series before the Platinum series began.
- Despite being a small 100-card set, it produced an unusually high number of tournament staples — Machamp, Dusknoir, Gengar and Sableye all trace back here.
- The Charmander, Charmeleon and Charizard secret rares (101–103) are modernised tributes to their iconic Base Set originals.
- Three Shiny Pokémon — Drifloon, Duskull and Voltorb (SH1–SH3) — hide at the very end of the set as alternate-coloured secret cards.
- The English release was based on Japan’s “Intense Fight in the Destroyed Sky” (破空の激闘), the last set of the DP era in Japan.
