Overview

Evolutions booster pack (Charizard)

Released on November 2, 2016, XY—Evolutions was the final XY-era expansion and the grand finale of Pokémon’s 20th-anniversary celebrations: a loving remake of the original 1999 Base Set. Its 108-card main set (plus five throwback secret rares) revisits the Kanto classics with updated artwork, modern frames, and a heavy dose of nostalgia.

The set pairs faithful reprints of old-school Pokémon and Trainers with modern power: the three Kanto starter Mega Evolutions, a handful of Pokémon-EX and BREAK cards, and cheeky throwbacks pulled straight from the earliest days of the TCG. Two theme decks — Mewtwo Mayhem (Psychic/Fighting) and Pikachu Power (Lightning/Grass) — shipped alongside it.

More than any other set of the era, Evolutions is about the feeling of opening Base Set again — right down to the artwork and card layout — for a whole new generation of Trainers.

From the official set description:

The Pokémon Legacy Evolves! All Trainers and Pokémon grow and evolve—and this expansion restores the very first Pokémon trading cards to glory! With the exhilarating power of Mega Venusaur-EX, Mega Charizard-EX, and Mega Blastoise-EX, plus some wild surprises like Dragonite-EX, Ninetales BREAK, Machamp BREAK, and Mega Slowbro-EX, the classic hard-battling Pokémon and old-school Trainers are reinvented for a new generation.

The Kanto Starter Megas

Just like Base Set, Evolutions is anchored by the three Kanto starters — only now they Mega Evolve, and they front the set’s Elite Trainer Boxes and booster art.

M Charizard-EX (#13)

M Charizard-EX (#13)

The undisputed headliner. A modern take on the most famous Pokémon card of all time, M Charizard-EX is the card everyone wanted from Evolutions — and the reason the set sold as well as it did. It fronts its own Elite Trainer Box and remains the chase of the set.

M Blastoise-EX (#22)

M Blastoise-EX (#22)

The Water-type powerhouse. M Blastoise-EX brings a heavy-hitting body and headlines the second Elite Trainer Box, completing the nostalgic starter trio.

M Venusaur-EX (#2)

M Venusaur-EX (#2)

The Grass-type of the trio. M Venusaur-EX rounds out the Kanto starters with a bulky, supportive frame — a must for anyone building the full anniversary set.

Kanto Legends & Pokémon-EX

Beyond the starters, Evolutions revives the Base Set’s biggest names with a modern Pokémon-EX twist.

Mewtwo-EX (#54)

Mewtwo-EX (#54)

The psychic icon. Mewtwo was the boss of Base Set, and its Evolutions Pokémon-EX — alongside the basic Mewtwo reprint — anchors the Mewtwo Mayhem theme deck and the set’s Psychic side.

Dragonite-EX (#72)

Dragonite-EX (#72)

A fan-favourite dragon. Dragonite-EX gives Evolutions a powerful Colorless attacker and one of the set’s more sought-after non-Charizard cards.

M Slowbro-EX (#27)

M Slowbro-EX (#27)

A surprise Mega. One of the set’s “wild surprises,” M Slowbro-EX is an unexpected Mega Evolution that gives the Base Set roster a fun modern remix.

M Pidgeot-EX (#65)

M Pidgeot-EX (#65)

Kanto skies. M Pidgeot-EX brings the classic early-route bird into the Mega era with a slick Full-Art presence.

BREAK Evolution Meets Kanto

Evolutions gave the BREAK mechanic a nostalgic send-off, applying it to four Base Set Pokémon.

Ninetales BREAK (#16)

Ninetales BREAK (#16)

Fox fire. Ninetales BREAK adds a hard-hitting Fire option and is one of the set’s most-loved BREAK cards, called out by name in the official blurb.

Machamp BREAK (#59)

Machamp BREAK (#59)

Fighting muscle. Machamp BREAK gives the classic Fighting powerhouse a modern, high-damage evolution.

Starmie BREAK (#32)

Starmie BREAK (#32)

Water spin. Starmie BREAK offers slippery Water-type utility on top of the Staryu line.

Nidoking BREAK (#46)

Nidoking BREAK (#46)

Poison power. Nidoking BREAK rounds out the quartet with a heavy Fighting/Poison hitter atop the Nidoran♂ line.

Throwback Secret Rares

The most delightful part of Evolutions is its handful of secret rares pulled straight from the earliest days of the Pokémon TCG — a wink to collectors who remember them the first time around.

Here Comes Team Rocket! (#113)

Here Comes Team Rocket! (#113)

The ultimate throwback. A modern reprint of the legendary Wizards-era Trainer, complete with its iconic full-bleed artwork — the set’s most talked-about secret rare and a nostalgia bomb for veteran players.

Imakuni?'s Doduo (#112)

Imakuni?’s Doduo (#112)

A joke card returns. The eccentric Imakuni? gets his own Doduo card, reviving one of the TCG’s quirkiest early gags.

Flying Pikachu (#110)

Flying Pikachu (#110)

Classic promo energy. Flying Pikachu brings back a beloved early-era Pikachu variant as a full-art secret.

Surfing Pikachu (#111)

Surfing Pikachu (#111)

Cowabunga. Surfing Pikachu completes the pair of throwback Pikachu secrets — pure Base Set-era joy.

Products & Print Versions

Evolutions sold in four booster pack artworks — Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur and Raichu — in booster boxes and blisters. Uniquely, it shipped with two Elite Trainer Boxes, one fronted by Mega Charizard-EX and one by Mega Blastoise-EX.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Evolutions is one of the most collected sets of its era, and — no surprise — almost all of its value orbits a single orange dragon.

M Charizard-EX — Full Art (#101)

M Charizard-EX — Full Art (#101)

The set’s crown jewel. The gold-bordered Full-Art M Charizard-EX is the most valuable single in Evolutions and one of the most desirable cards of the entire XY run — a modern grail for Charizard collectors.

Charizard-EX (#12)

Charizard-EX (#12)

Classic Charizard, modern frame. Even the regular Charizard-EX carries a premium simply for being Charizard in a Base Set-styled expansion.

Here Comes Team Rocket! (#113)

Here Comes Team Rocket! (#113)

A nostalgia chase. The reprinted Wizards-era secret rare is one of the most sought-after non-Charizard cards in the set, prized for its history and its full-bleed art.

Mewtwo-EX — Full Art (#103)

Mewtwo-EX — Full Art (#103)

The psychic secret. The Full-Art Mewtwo-EX is a strong value-holder and a favourite for fans of the original Base Set boss.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Evolutions was built for nostalgia rather than the tournament grind, so its competitive footprint is modest — but a few cards still found homes, and its reprints kept useful staples in circulation.

M Charizard-EX (#13)

M Charizard-EX (#13)

The playable Mega. Backed by Charizard Spirit Link and the set’s Fire support, M Charizard-EX gave aggressive Fire decks a huge single-prize-turn threat and was the most competitively relevant card of the set.

Mewtwo-EX (#54)

Mewtwo-EX (#54)

A flexible attacker. Mewtwo-EX remained a handy Psychic option, and the Evolutions printing kept it easy to pick up for Standard and Expanded decks alike.

Dragonite-EX (#72)

Dragonite-EX (#72)

Colorless power. Dragonite-EX anchored a fun Colorless build and was among the set’s better competitive attackers outside the Megas.

Just as important, Evolutions reprinted a stack of everyday staples — Energy Retrieval, Switch, Potion, Professor Oak’s Hint and the basic Energy cards — keeping affordable copies flowing to new players well into the Sun & Moon era.

Trivia & Points of Interest

  • A Base Set remake. Evolutions faithfully reimagines the original 1999 Base Set — same Pokémon, same Kanto flavour, updated for the modern game as the finale of Pokémon’s 20th-anniversary year.
  • Two Elite Trainer Boxes. Unusually, the set launched with two ETBs — one fronted by Mega Charizard-EX and one by Mega Blastoise-EX — a nod to the old Charizard-vs-Blastoise rivalry.
  • Wizards-era throwbacks. Here Comes Team Rocket!, Imakuni?’s Doduo, and the Flying and Surfing Pikachu secrets revive gags and promos from the earliest days of the TCG.
  • Japanese origin. The cards came from Japan’s Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary (CP6), released September 16, 2016.
  • The end of an era. Evolutions was the last XY-era expansion; the following set, Sun & Moon, launched a brand-new block and the GX mechanic.

Japanese Sets, Videos & Gallery

In Japan, Evolutions’ cards came from Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary (CP6), released on September 16, 2016 as the anniversary send-off to the XY BREAK era. As with Base Set before it, the English Evolutions leaned all the way into first-generation nostalgia — and it remains one of the most-opened, most-loved sets of its time.
