Crown Zenith booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Crown Zenith is the grand finale of the Sword & Shield era — a special set (SWSH12.5) released in English on 20 January 2023. In the celebration tradition of Hidden Fates, Shining Fates and Celebrations, it is a “best of” the whole era, fronted by the Sword & Shield mascots Zacian and Zamazenta, and headlined by a record-breaking 70-card Galarian Gallery.

The Galarian Gallery is the biggest alt-art gallery subset the game had ever produced — the grown-up successor to the Trainer Gallery — and its crown jewel, Giratina VSTAR (GG69), became one of the most valuable modern cards. The set continues the era’s two signature mechanics, Pokémon VSTAR and Radiant Pokémon, and was adapted from the Japanese high-class finale set VSTAR Universe (s12a), released 2 December 2022.

The English set totals 160 cards — 159 in the regular numbering plus one secret (a special-illustration Pikachu, #160) — and the separate 70-card Galarian Gallery (GG01–GG70) brings the full expansion to 230 cards. As a special set, no standard booster box was sold at retail; packs came bundled inside its many collections.

Make your way to the top! The Sword & Shield Series reaches its towering peak in the Pokémon TCG: Crown Zenith expansion. Zacian and Zamazenta lead a celebration of the whole era, a dazzling 70-card Galarian Gallery gathers its greatest artwork, and Radiant Pokémon and powerful Pokémon VSTAR shine one last time. Reach the summit!

Set Highlights: A Grand Finale

Fittingly for a send-off, Crown Zenith is themed around the Sword & Shield mascots — Zacian VSTAR (096/159) and Zamazenta VSTAR (099/159) — and closes the main set with a beloved special-illustration Pikachu (160/159). It is stacked with era-spanning favourites, from Charizard VSTAR to Rayquaza VMAX, before the enormous Galarian Gallery takes over.

Crown Zenith’s defining feature is the Galarian Gallery — a 70-card alternate-art subset (GG01–GG70) celebrating the entire Sword & Shield era. It is the grown-up successor to the Trainer Gallery: rebranded, and roughly doubled in size to become the largest gallery subset the TCG had ever made. It mixes special-illustration V, VSTAR and VMAX Pokémon with gorgeous character-focused Supporter alt arts.

Its crown jewel is Giratina VSTAR (GG69) — the set’s #1 chase and one of the most valuable modern cards — followed by Mewtwo VSTAR (GG44) and Arceus VSTAR (GG70). The character alt arts, such as Cynthia’s Ambition (GG60) and Colress’s Experiment (GG59), are collector favourites, and the gallery gathers the era’s Eeveelutions, legendary beasts and Hisui Pokémon into one show-stopping run.

Radiant Pokémon

Crown Zenith carries three Radiant Pokémon — the shiny, one-per-deck cards introduced in Astral Radiance. Radiant Charizard (020) returns (its first printing was in the Pokémon GO set), joined by Radiant Charjabug (051) and Radiant Eternatus (105), the latter a handy draw engine for control decks.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

Crown Zenith is the English adaptation of Japan’s high-class finale set VSTAR Universe (s12a), released 2 December 2022. VSTAR Universe is considerably larger — a 262-card celebration of the era — and English Crown Zenith is a curated, smaller selection of it, so a number of Japanese VSTAR Universe cards never appeared in the English release.

As a special set, neither region sold Crown Zenith the way a normal expansion is sold: in the West there was no standard booster box, and Japanese VSTAR Universe was a premium “high-class pack” product. Japanese packs hold fewer cards than the 10-card English packs.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Crown Zenith is a collector’s set, and its value is dominated by the Galarian Gallery secret-rare VSTARs. Approximate near-mint raw values are a guide only and move constantly.

Giratina VSTAR — GG69 (Galarian Gallery)

Giratina VSTAR — GG69 (Galarian Gallery)

The undisputed #1 chase of the set and one of the most valuable modern English cards, full stop. Its dramatic Distortion World artwork made it an instant grail — commonly $250–320 raw, with gem-mint PSA 10 copies far higher. It single-handedly anchors the entire set’s secondary-market value.

Mewtwo VSTAR — GG44 (Galarian Gallery)

Mewtwo VSTAR — GG44 (Galarian Gallery)

Frequently the set’s second most valuable card — a gorgeous, hugely popular Mewtwo special illustration, typically around $220–280 raw.

Arceus VSTAR — GG70 (Galarian Gallery)

Arceus VSTAR — GG70 (Galarian Gallery)

The final card of the gallery and a top-tier chase — the “Alpha Pokémon” closing out the era in style, generally $180–230 raw.

Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR — GG68 (Galarian Gallery)

Origin Forme Dialga VSTAR — GG68 (Galarian Gallery)

One of the Hisui box-legend special illustrations (its counterpart Origin Forme Palkia is GG67). A high-value gallery pull at roughly $110–140 raw, ahead of most of the rest of the subset.

Pikachu — 160/159 (Secret)

Pikachu — 160/159 (Secret)

A beloved special-illustration Pikachu that closes the main set — an iconic, era-ending card. It sits in the mid-tier at around $40–55 raw, prized more for its charm and significance than sheer scarcity.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Crown Zenith is remembered as a celebration set rather than a metagame-shaker — but it added a few fun archetypes and reprinted a stack of tournament staples cheaply.

Zacian VSTAR — 096/159

Zacian VSTAR — 096/159

The mascot of Sword. A Metal-type attacker whose VSTAR Power and hard-hitting attack anchored a fast, aggressive Metal deck. One of the set’s few genuinely constructed-relevant new cards.

Regigigas VSTAR — 114/159

Regigigas VSTAR — 114/159

A slower, control-leaning finale card that headlined a fun Water/toolbox archetype built around its powerful VSTAR Power — a favourite of players who enjoyed grindy, big-turn decks.

Zamazenta VSTAR — 099/159

Zamazenta VSTAR — 099/159

The mascot of Shield, and Zacian’s defensive counterpart. It saw fringe and tech play as a bulky Metal partner — and, together with Zacian, gives the set’s send-off its perfect Sword-and-Shield symbolism. Crown Zenith’s biggest competitive gift, though, was its cheap reprints of format staples such as Cross Switcher.

Trivia

  • Crown Zenith is the grand finale of the Sword & Shield era — the following release, Scarlet & Violet, began a brand-new era with new mechanics (Pokémon ex replacing V/VSTAR).
  • Its 70-card Galarian Gallery was the largest alt-art gallery subset ever at the time, and the point where the “Trainer Gallery” concept was rebranded and supersized.
  • Giratina VSTAR (GG69) became a phenomenon — its dark, dramatic artwork made it the single most sought-after card, and it has held high value for years, rare for a modern card.
  • The special-illustration Pikachu (#160) is a fan-favourite, era-closing secret.
  • English Crown Zenith is a curated adaptation of Japan’s huge high-class finale set VSTAR Universe (s12a, 262 cards).
  • Like other special sets, it had no standard booster box — a point of frustration for players who just wanted a plain box to open.
  • With 70 Galarian Gallery cards on top of the main-set secrets, collectors flagged the set’s pull-rate and secret-rare bloat — completing a master set (or hitting Giratina) was expensive.
  • Despite the grumbles, Crown Zenith is widely remembered as one of the best-looking sets of the era and remains a highly sought-after sealed product.
