Summer of Discovery! is the 38th episode of Pokémon the Series: XY, the seventeenth season of the Pokémon anime, and the 833rd episode of the English dub overall (Japanese episode 839, Bulbapedia code XY039). It first aired in Japan on 14 August 2014 and in the United States on 11 October 2014. It falls within the season’s Pokémon Summer Camp stretch (EP39–EP42).
Synopsis
At Professor Sycamore’s Pokémon Summer Camp the group meet three new rivals, Shauna, Tierno and Trevor, and Serena, after losing her first battle, begins to wonder what her own dream is. Team Rocket sneak in as the camp’s chefs under the watchful eye of the custodian, Madame Catherine, and Sophie assigns the group to the Froakie cabin.
Tierno’s dancing Squirtle beats a Conkeldurr with Skull Bash; Shauna, who has watched Serena’s Pokévision video, introduces her standoffish Bulbasaur; and Trevor arrives with a hyperactive Charmander that sets Chespin on fire. Trevor wants to see every Pokémon in the Pokédex and Ash to become a Pokémon Master, leaving Serena unsure of her own goal. Sycamore explains that teams will earn points and that the winners enter the camp’s Hall of Fame.
In first-touch practice battles, Shauna’s Bulbasaur overpowers Fennekin’s Flamethrower to beat Serena, and Tierno’s Squirtle touches Froakie first to beat Ash. At dinner Shauna says she wants to be a Pokémon Performer and Tierno a dancer, Team Rocket earn a raise for their cooking, and Serena brushes Fennekin on the dock, wondering what she wants to do.
