Ash and Harrison are now at the end of their battle to see who will be going to the next round of the finals. It’s down to Harrison’s blaziken, and Charizard. Harrison has already seen Charizard battle, and blazikens are not native to Johto or Kanto. Afterwards Ash and company, Gary, and Harrison rescue a misdreavus trapped under a tree. Gary tells Ash of his decision to switch from being a pokémon trainer to becoming a pokémon researcher. Then after the conference ends, Ash, Gary, and Harrison join forces to keep Team Rocket from stealing Pikachu before going their separate ways.

Major Events

  • Ash loses to Harrison (Top 8)
  • Jon Dickson wins
  • Gary → researcher
  • Blaze Kick = first Gen III move
  • Professor Birch (flashback)

Trivia

  • The English title plays on a photo finish.
  • The screenplay is by Yukiyoshi Ōhashi.
  • This is a plot episode: it advances the Johto storyline.
  • The Who’s That Pokémon? segment features Misdreavus in Japan, where it almost always matched the episode, but Tyranitar in the US, where 4Kids picked the Pokémon at random.

Changes in the English Dub

  • 4-s Misdreavus tower shot cut
  • Team Rocket motto variations and dub-only fourth-wall jokes (“Meowth has been dropped from the rest of the season”, EP265). Move-name errors: Headbutt → “Skull Bash” (EP216–217), Take Down (EP220), Outrage → “Attack Rage” (EP253), Bind → “Wrap”, Scary Face → “Leer” (EP271), Ice Beam → “Cold Beam” (EP257). The announcer repeatedly calls Harrison “from Silver Town” instead of Littleroot (EP270, EP272).
