See below for a comprehensive list of all the main series Pokémon RPG games. This list covers everything from the original Game Boy titles all the way to the newest games. The ‘main’ or ‘core’ series refers to the traditional Pokémon RPG games that were released on handheld devices for their first twenty years and have lived on the Nintendo Switch since 2018, as opposed to the spin-offs on consoles, PC or mobile.
We have a page for each and every one of the games – just click its name to go to its own page to find all sorts of general, story & plot information as well as cheats, tips, information on any new Pokémon the game introduced, videos and more. The newest games are still getting their pages written, so for now those link through to their box art galleries.

Generation IIIGame Boy Advance · 2002–2005
The third generation took us into the Game Boy Advance era where we saw our favourite Pokémon games with brighter colours and better detail than we’d ever seen them before. This gen took off with the release of Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire on November 21st, 2002 when it arrived in Japan and concluded when Pokémon Emerald hit the shelves in Europe on October 21st, 2005.
In terms of sales Ruby and Sapphire netted a respectable 16.22 million between them with Emerald moving 6.8 million copies. Where Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the enhanced versions of the classic Red/Blue titles, weighed in with a further 12 million sales – and then picked up another 4 million or so when they were re-released on the Switch eShop for the 30th anniversary in February 2026.

Generation IVNintendo DS · 2006–2010
Gen four saw our Pokémon games utilise a few new features on the Nintendo DS in the form of touch screen capability and the use of a stylus as well as the obvious addition of the second screen. Although this generation follows on from the events of generation 3 it is not a direct sequel in the way that 2 was to 1 etc in the sense that no gen four games give access to the Hoenn region.
The generation spanned from September 28th, 2006 when Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were launched in Japan and had its final entries on March 26th, 2010 when HeartGold and SoulSilver arrived in Europe. Overall the novelty features of the DS resulted in an increase in sales over its predecessors in Gen 3 with Diamond & Pearl netting 17.67 million sales globally (edging out Ruby/Sapphire by around 1.5 million units) and Pokémon Platinum bringing home another 7.6 million sales (again outselling Emerald by around a million units).

Generation VNintendo DS · 2010–2012
The fifth generation of Pokémon games were all on the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DS being the first console to receive two generations of Pokémon games. This is most probably a result of the popularity gen 4 had enjoyed due to the novelty value of the DS’s new features. This gen began with the release of Pokémon Black & White in Japan on September 18th, 2010 and concluded when Pokémon Black & White Version 2 was released in Europe on October 12th, 2012.
This gen sold a total 24.16 million units – 15.64 million of which were from Pokémon Black & White (V1) and was also the first gen where instead of getting a third game version we got two direct sequel games instead. Gen 5 also introduces the Unova region; a region set far away from those of previous generations (geographically).

Generation VINintendo 3DS · 2013–2014
The sixth installment of the main Pokémon game series began with the release of Pokémon X and Y which was released globally on October 12th, 2013 and concluded on November 28th, 2014 when Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire versions arrived in Europe. This gen saw the main series of Pokémon RPG games in full 3D for the first time utilising the new technology of the 3DS.
Not only did these titles bring a return to the Hoenn region but also introduced us to the Kalos region for the first time as well as 72 new species of Pokémon. Sales wise this gen did pretty well with Pokémon X and Y moving 16.8 million units between them; outselling the fifth gen’s Black & White games by around a million copies. Remakes of the classic Ruby/Sapphire GBA titles also weighed in with a 14.68 million sales total (not a million miles behind the original versions).

Generation VIINintendo 3DS, Nintendo Switch · 2016–2018
Riding the waves of the gen six & overall 3DS platform’s success Pokémon Sun and Moon were released in Japan & the USA on November 18th 2016, the titles released in Europe one week later. The follow-up turned out not to be the rumoured ‘Pokémon Stars’ but Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, which landed on the 3DS in November 2017 – and then the generation really did give us our first core series Pokémon games on a home console when Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! & Let’s Go, Eevee! arrived on the Nintendo Switch in November 2018.
Sales wise Sun & Moon finished up on 16.34 million, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon added a further 9.28 million and Let’s Go another 15 million or so. I think a fair bit of that is down to the fact that Pokémon Go had really brought mons back to the mainstream public eye and made the series more accessible to people who may never have played a Pokémon game.

Generation VIIINintendo Switch · 2019–2022
Generation eight was the first to live entirely on a home console. Pokémon Sword & Shield arrived on the Nintendo Switch worldwide on November 15th, 2019 and took us to Galar, a region based on Great Britain, complete with the open Wild Area, Dynamax battles and football-stadium Gym fights. Instead of a third version we got something new: a paid Expansion Pass that added The Isle of Armor (June 2020) and The Crown Tundra (October 2020).
The generation was rounded off by two very different games in the space of a couple of months. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl (November 19th, 2021) were faithful remakes of the DS originals and the first core games not developed in-house by Game Freak, while Pokémon Legends: Arceus (January 28th, 2022) threw out the rulebook with an action-RPG prequel set in Hisui, the Sinnoh of old. Between them the three releases shifted around 57 million copies, with Sword & Shield’s 27 million making them the second best selling games in the series.
