Team Up booster box

Team Up is the set where the Sun & Moon TCG changed gears. Released in February 2019, SM9’s headline act was a brand-new mechanic that would run all the way to the end of the era: the TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX.

The idea was simple and enormous. Take two Pokémon, staple them onto one card, and hand it a huge HP pool and a format-warping GX attack. The catch: knock one out and your opponent takes three Prize cards instead of two. It was high-risk, high-reward deckbuilding distilled into a single card, and it defined competitive Pokémon for the next year.

The debut class was a strong one: Pikachu & Zekrom-GX (the “PikaRom” that instantly became a top-tier aggro deck), plus Celebi & Venusaur-GX, Gengar & Mimikyu-GX, Latias & Latios-GX, Eevee & Snorlax-GX, and the gloriously silly 270-HP Magikarp & Wailord-GX. Away from the Tag Teams, the quiet MVP was Jirachi (99/181) — a consistency engine so good it went into nearly everything.

Reception was big and lasting. Team Up is remembered as a genuine turning point — the set that gave the era its signature mechanic, handed collectors a run of gorgeous rainbow-rare Tag Teams, and produced one of the most-played support cards the game has ever seen.

Assemble an amazing deck from the many powerful cards in the Sun & Moon—Team Up expansion, including exciting new TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX and loads of strategic Trainer cards! The phenomenal power of every TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX makes them worthy of designing a whole deck around.

— Official Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Team Up expansion description

Set Highlights: Tag Team GX Arrive

A brand-new kind of card. Team Up’s whole identity is one big idea: Tag Team Pokémon-GX. These cards put two Pokémon on a single sheet with enormous HP and a devastating GX attack — but the catch was steep, handing your opponent three Prize cards on a knockout instead of the usual two. Six led the launch, from Celebi & Venusaur-GX (1/181) to Eevee & Snorlax-GX (120/181) and Magikarp & Wailord-GX (160/181).

PikaRom runs the show. One Tag Team defined the era: Pikachu & Zekrom-GX (33/181). Its Full Blitz attack loaded three Lightning Energy straight from your deck in a single turn, setting up the huge Tag Bolt-GX — and “PikaRom” became one of the defining decks of 2019, a fixture right through to the World Championships. The set’s Tapu Koko ◆ (51/181) Prism Star gave those Lightning decks even more speed.

Risk versus reward. Tag Team GX kicked off a real debate about power creep. A 240-plus HP attacker that could swing a game in one turn was undeniably fun — but surrendering three Prizes if it fell meant a single bad trade could hand over half the game. That tension became the defining strategic question of the whole Tag Team era, and it started right here.

The chase. With 196 cards all told (181 plus 15 secret rares), the hunt was on for the rainbow and full-art Tag Teams — the Pikachu & Zekrom-GX rainbow (184/181) chief among them, a card that has stayed a fan favourite long after the format moved on.

SM9 booster pack

Team Up is the set that changed how Pokémon-GX worked. Japan got it first as Tag Bolt (SM9) on December 7th, 2018 — a 109-card expansion — and it reached the English market on February 1st, 2019, grown to 196 cards (181 numbered plus 15 secret rares). Both regions share the same landmark: this is where TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX debuted, pairing two Pokémon on a single card for enormous HP and powerful combined attacks.

Pikachu & Zekrom-GX — the deck better known as ‘PikaRom’ — headlines in every language, joined by Celebi & Venusaur-GX and Gardevoir & Sylveon-GX. The bigger English number is the usual story: extra secret rares and full-art TAG TEAM alternates layered on top of the leaner Japanese set.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Pikachu & Zekrom-GX

Pikachu & Zekrom-GX — #33/181

The marquee chase and the face of the set’s new mechanic. Between the Full Art (162) and Rainbow Rare (184), “PikaRom” is the card everyone wanted — a knockout on looks and on the battlefield.

Magikarp & Wailord-GX

Magikarp & Wailord-GX — #160/181

The beloved “joke” Tag Team — 270 HP of pure comedy. Rarely competitive, endlessly collectible, and a fan favourite whose Rainbow Rare (183) is a binder must-have.

Gengar & Mimikyu-GX

Gengar & Mimikyu-GX — #53/181

A spooky control-deck engine with a beautiful Rainbow Rare (186) — equally prized by players and collectors.

Celebi & Venusaur-GX

Celebi & Venusaur-GX — #1/181

Card #1 of the set and a legitimate Grass toolbox attacker, with a Full Art (159) and Rainbow Rare (182) collectors chased hard.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Jirachi

Jirachi — #99/181

Maybe the most-played consistency card of the entire era. Its Stellar Wish ability digs your deck for Trainers, and it slotted into nearly every competitive list for years.

Pikachu & Zekrom-GX

Pikachu & Zekrom-GX — #33/181

The core of “PikaRom,” a dominant early-2019 aggressive Lightning deck that ramped Energy fast and swung for huge one-shots with Full Blitz into Tag Bolt-GX.

Gengar & Mimikyu-GX

Gengar & Mimikyu-GX — #53/181

Enabled control and mill strategies — its Horror House-GX locks the opponent out of drawing for a turn while spreading damage across their board.

Trivia & Pop Culture

  • The Tag Team debut. Team Up introduced TAG TEAM Pokémon-GX — the mechanic that would run right through to Cosmic Eclipse at the end of the era.
  • 270 HP of fish. Magikarp & Wailord-GX carried one of the highest HP totals in the game at the time, purely as a comedic “for fun” card.
  • Three-Prize gamble. Every Tag Team gives up three Prize cards when knocked out — the deliberate downside that balanced their enormous power.
  • Small in Japan, huge in the West. The Japanese base set (Tag Bolt) was only 95 cards; the English Team Up ballooned to 181 by folding in cards from other Japanese releases.
