01Overview

Meet Ninetales

Everything you need to know about the Fox Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Few Pokémon look as if they stepped straight out of a fairy tale quite like Ninetales. The Fox Pokémon is what a Vulpix becomes when it touches a Fire Stone: its six curly tails turn into nine long, flowing ones tipped with pale orange, and its russet coat gives way to thick, golden-white fur, with a soft mane at the neck and a long, fluffy crest sweeping back from its head. Slender legs, pointed ears and glowing red eyes finish off one of the most elegant silhouettes in the whole Pokédex.

Ninetales comes wrapped in legend. One story says nine noble saints were united and reborn as this Pokémon; another credits nine wizards with sacred powers. Each tail is said to hold its own mystical power, and the energy stored in all nine is believed to let it live for a thousand years – a long-lived Ninetales is said to have fur that shines like gold.

“It has nine long tails and fur that gleams gold. It is said to live for 1,000 years.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed, X, Violet & Pokopia · 1996

It is also very, very clever. Ninetales can understand human speech, its bright red eyes are said to cast a sinister light that seizes control of a foe's mind, and the flickering flames it breathes leave opponents hypnotised. Just don't grab its tails: this proud fox is famously vengeful, and anyone who does risks a curse lasting 1,000 years – one that, some say, falls on their descendants too. Treat it kindly, though, and you'll find a fastidious companion that licks its paws clean and sleeps curled up in its own tails like a living blanket.

That mix of beauty and menace has made Ninetales a star since Red and Green, where it was a version exclusive and the fiery counterpart to Arcanine – both are Fire Stone evolutions, but where Arcanine is mostly male, three in four Ninetales are female. Blaine sends one out against Ash in the anime's Cinnabar Gym, Kabu battles with one in Sword and Shield, and in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Team a legend about Ninetales's curse drives the whole story.

Then Sun and Moon reimagined it as Alolan Ninetales, an Ice/Fairy guardian of snowy Mount Lanakila once worshipped as a mountain deity. Designed by Atsuko Nishida and rooted in the many-tailed kitsune of Japanese folklore, both forms are perennial fan favourites – proof that a fox with nine tails has at least nine ways to win you over.

EvolutionEvolves from Alolan Vulpix when exposed to an Ice Stone.

High on Alola's snow-capped Mount Lanakila – a peak some people regard as holy ground – Ninetales traded fire for frost. Its golden coat became a pale, icy blue, its fur grew long, flowing and wispy, and its crest lengthened, with snow-white tips on its crest, its tails and the lower halves of its legs. Large blue eyes and little tufts of fur in front of its ears complete a look so ethereal that, for generations, people revered it as a deity incarnate – until it was finally identified as a regional variant of Ninetales. Its Ice/Fairy typing is still unique to it today.

For all the reverence, Alolan Ninetales is gentle and calm. It guides lost travellers all the way down to the foot of the mountain – partly out of kindness, and partly because it wants them out of its territory as fast as possible. Cross it, though, and you'll be frozen stiff in an instant: it grows ice crystals in its fur that can serve as a shield or be fired like bullets with enough force to shatter rock, and it punishes anything that threatens its pack of Vulpix or harms nature. Even asleep it is magical, sparkling as it dusts the ground around it with powdery snow.

Base stats total 505. In Generation I Ninetales had a single Special stat of 100; when Gold and Silver split Special in two, Sp. Def kept the 100 but Sp. Atk dropped to 81, so it came out of the change a bulkier, less explosive special attacker. Its other stats (73 HP, 76 Attack, 75 Defense, 100 Speed) have never changed. Alolan Ninetales has the same 505 total but trades 9 points of Attack for Speed (67 Attack, 109 Speed). Spin-offs & cameos

Super Smash Bros.

Ninetales itself has never set paw in a Super Smash Bros. arena – no fighter slot, Poké Ball appearance, trophy or spirit – but its family finally got the call in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Vulpix and Alolan Vulpix both debut as Poké Ball Pokémon: Vulpix shoots out four pillars of fire with Ember, while its Alolan cousin fires Powder Snow that can freeze opponents solid. Each is also a Novice-class support spirit – Vulpix equips a Fire Flower and is fought as a tiny red Fox on Saffron City, while Alolan Vulpix equips a Freezie and hides in fog as a tiny purple Fox on the Battlefield form of Summit.

Pokémon GO

Ninetales has been in Pokémon GO since it launched in July 2016: catch a Vulpix and feed it Candy to evolve it, and as a buddy the line earns Candy every 3 km. Its moveset has been reshuffled several times – Ember, Fire Blast and Flamethrower gave way to Fire Spin, Overheat and Solar Beam in February 2017, Psyshock arrived in February 2019, Weather Ball in January 2021 and Scorching Sands in September 2023, alongside Feint Attack and Heat Wave. Alolan Ninetales brings Powder Snow, Charm (added September 2019), Dazzling Gleam, Ice Beam, Blizzard, Psyshock and an Ice-type Weather Ball, with base stats of 170 Attack, 193 Defense and 177 Stamina (Ninetales: 169, 190 and 177). Both foxes shared a Community Day on Sunday 1 February 2026: evolving a Vulpix during the event, or within four hours of it, produced a Ninetales knowing the Grass-type Energy Ball, while an Alolan Vulpix became an Alolan Ninetales with Chilling Water, a Water-type move that also lowers the opponent's Attack in Trainer Battles.

Card

Ninetales appears on two collectable cards in the handheld version of the card game – though the American release spells it 'Ninetails' on both, a typo fixed for Europe.

Battler

Ninetales fights in full 3D and gets its own Stadium Pokédex entry, warning that pulling its tail as a joke could earn you a 1,000-year curse.

Evolution

There's no catching one outright: evolve a Vulpix on the table to add Ninetales to your Pinball Pokédex.

Battler / Gym Leader's Pokémon

Blaine brings a Scope Lens-holding Ninetales to Round 1 of the Kanto Gym Leader Castle – one that knows Sunny Day, Fire Blast, Dig and Quick Attack.

Evolution

Once again Ninetales can only be added to the Pokédex by evolving a Vulpix.

Puzzle piece

A rare piece that turns up in Endless Levels 6 and 11, Forever Level 55 and Mr. Who's Den.

Key story character

An old legend of a human cursed by Ninetales drives the plot: blamed for the world's natural disasters, the hero travels to Ninetales's home atop Mt. Freeze to learn the truth. Later, Ninetales gives Gengar the 9-Tail Crest when he seeks to atone for what he did to Gardevoir – and, the game reveals, once Ninetales lays a curse, not even it can lift it.

Moves

For most of its history Ninetales was a Pokémon you evolved with care. In Red and Green it arrived with just Ember, Tail Whip, Quick Attack and Roar and never learned another move by levelling up, so Flamethrower, Fire Spin and Confuse Ray had to be taught to Vulpix before the Fire Stone came out. Gold and Silver gave it Confuse Ray and Safeguard from the start and a lone Fire Spin at level 43, Diamond and Pearl added Nasty Plot, and X and Y finally let it begin with Flamethrower, while the TM case filled up with Fire Blast, Overheat, Will-O-Wisp, Dark Pulse and Calm Mind.

Sun and Moon then split the family in two. Alolan Ninetales, an Ice/Fairy fox evolved with an Ice Stone, trades flames for Ice Beam, Blizzard, Dazzling Gleam and Aurora Veil, with Moonblast and Freeze-Dry waiting among its egg moves. Sword and Shield handed both forms their whole Vulpix move pool from level 1, Legends: Arceus gave them proper levelling curves topped by Fire Blast and Blizzard, and Scarlet and Violet tucked most of those old moves behind the Move Reminder while the TM list took in Burning Jealousy, Scorching Sands, Play Rough and Triple Axel.

Signature moves

FireFlamethrower

Ninetales's trademark blaze. In Red and Blue it had to be learned as a Vulpix, from Ruby and Sapphire it was TM35, and since X and Y Ninetales has known it from the moment it evolves (in Legends: Arceus it arrives at level 37).

FireFire Spin

A fiery whirlwind that traps its target. It was Ninetales's only level-up move after evolving in Gold and Silver (level 43) and Ruby and Sapphire (level 45), and it jumped from 15 to 35 power in Black and White.

GhostConfuse Ray

An eerie light for a mysterious fox. It was one of Ninetales's level-1 moves from Gold and Silver to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and again in Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Scarlet and Violet keep it as TM017.

DarkNasty Plot

A scheme fit for a clever fox, sharply raising its Special Attack. Ninetales has known it from level 1 in every main game from Diamond and Pearl to Sword and Shield (Alolan Ninetales too, ever since Sun and Moon), and both forms learn it at level 9 in Legends: Arceus.

FireWill-O-Wisp

Ghostly flames that burn the target. Vulpix first learned it in Ruby and Sapphire, it was TM61 from Diamond and Pearl to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and in Sword and Shield Ninetales knows it from level 1.

Dazzling Gleam (Alolan Ninetales)

The snowy fox's Fairy-type calling card: Alolan Ninetales learns it the moment an Ice Stone evolves it in Sun and Moon, Sword and Shield, and Scarlet and Violet, and at level 29 in Legends: Arceus.

Aurora Veil & Blizzard (Alolan Ninetales)

Snowstorm and shield in one. Aurora Veil, a screen that only goes up in hail or snow, was TM70 in Sun and Moon and a level-1 move in Sword and Shield, while Blizzard sits on Alolan Ninetales's starting list in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow4 level-up · 16 TM/HM

In Red and Blue, Ninetales belongs to Blue: Blue players evolve a Vulpix with a Fire Stone, Red players have to trade for one, and Yellow lets you evolve a Vulpix too. Ninetales arrives knowing Ember, Tail Whip, Quick Attack and Roar and never learns another move by levelling up, so Confuse Ray, Fire Spin and Flamethrower have to be learned as a Vulpix before the stone comes out. Its 16 TMs include Fire Blast, Dig (a hefty 100 power in these games), Reflect, Swift and Hyper Beam. In the first three generations a move's category follows its type, so Fire attacks are special and Normal attacks physical. Disable, Headbutt and Hypnosis can be carried back from Gold, Silver and Crystal through the Time Capsule.

Silver players can evolve a Vulpix, while Gold and Crystal have no Ninetales of their own and need a trade. Ninetales now starts with Ember, Quick Attack, Confuse Ray and Safeguard, and Fire Spin becomes its one level-up move after evolving, at level 43. Tail Whip has to be learned as a Vulpix, and so does Flamethrower in Gold and Silver, while Crystal's move tutor teaches Flamethrower to Ninetales directly. Roar moves into the TM case, which grows to 21 with Sunny Day, Iron Tail, Hidden Power and Curse (which has its own mystery type in these games). Breeding arrives too, bringing five egg moves: Disable, Faint Attack, Flail, Hypnosis and Spite. Nine Red, Blue and Yellow TM moves, from Body Slam and Reflect to Skull Bash, can only come from Generation I.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (plus Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness)5 level-up · 19 TM/HM · 8 egg · 9 tutor

Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, LeafGreen and Pokémon XD all mean evolving a Vulpix, while FireRed and Colosseum have no Ninetales at all. The level-up list is the same as in Gold and Silver, with Fire Spin now at level 45. Flamethrower becomes TM35 and Overheat arrives as TM50, while three brand-new moves, Will-O-Wisp, Imprison and Grudge, have to be learned as a Vulpix, and Charm comes only from the Shadow Vulpix of Pokémon XD. Heat Wave, Howl and Psych Up bring the egg moves to eight, and the move tutors of FireRed and LeafGreen, Emerald and Pokémon XD teach up to nine moves (Body Slam, Double-Edge, Mimic and Substitute in all three). Categories still follow type, so the Dark-type Faint Attack counts as special. These games cannot receive Pokémon from Gold and Silver, so there is no transfer list.

Diamond, Pearl, Platinum and SoulSilver let you evolve a Vulpix, HeartGold players need a trade, and Pal Park's Field area can bring a Ninetales over from a Game Boy Advance game. This is the first generation in which every move has its own physical or special category. Nasty Plot joins Ember, Quick Attack, Confuse Ray and Safeguard at level 1, but Fire Spin goes back to being a Vulpix move, alongside Tail Whip, Imprison and Grudge. The TM case grows to 33 with Calm Mind, SolarBeam, Will-O-Wisp, Dark Pulse, Payback and Dream Eater; Energy Ball, Extrasensory, Flare Blitz and, in HeartGold and SoulSilver only, Power Swap bring the egg moves to 12; and the Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver tutors teach Heat Wave, Ominous Wind, Zen Headbutt, Snore, Spite and Swift, with Headbutt, Pain Split and Role Play in HeartGold and SoulSilver only.

Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 all hide Ninetales in the rustling grass of the Abundant Shrine, and in May 2012 a Japanese event handed out a Powerful Tag Ninetales that knows Heat Wave. The level-1 list is unchanged. Psyshock, Flame Charge, Incinerate, Energy Ball and Round are new among its 31 TMs; Hex, Tail Slap and Secret Power (which only Smeargle can pass down) join the egg moves; and the Black 2 and White 2 tutors teach 11 moves, from Foul Play and Dark Pulse to Heat Wave and Iron Tail. From Vulpix it can bring Fire Spin, Flame Burst, Inferno, Captivate and Extrasensory, plus Faint Attack and Hex in Black 2 and White 2, and Dark Pulse from a Dream World Vulpix in Black and White.

X and Y have Ninetales in Fire-type Friend Safaris, and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire go back to evolving a Vulpix. Imprison and Flamethrower join the level-1 moves, so Ninetales now starts with its signature flame, and Faint Attack is respelled Feint Attack. Flamethrower drops to 90 power, Fire Blast to 110 and Overheat to 130, while Incinerate climbs to 60. Its 35 TMs add Sleep Talk, Dark Pulse, Confide and, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only, Secret Power; Captivate becomes a fourteenth egg move; and the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire tutors teach nine moves, among them Foul Play, Heat Wave and Iron Tail. Vulpix's new Baby-Doll Eyes, along with Ember, Fire Spin, Hex and Inferno, can be learned before evolving.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon6 level-up · 32 TM/HM · 14 egg · 10 tutor · + Alolan Ninetales

Alola gives Ninetales an icy twin: in Sun and Ultra Sun, an Alolan Vulpix evolved with an Ice Stone becomes the Ice/Fairy Alolan Ninetales, while the Fire-type original only reaches Alola through Pokémon Bank, or by trade in Moon and Ultra Moon. Kantonian Ninetales keeps the six starting moves of X and Y. Dig is no longer a TM, and its 32 TMs lean on Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Overheat, Will-O-Wisp, Dark Pulse and Solar Beam. Its 14 egg moves are unchanged, and the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon tutors add Laser Focus to old favourites such as Foul Play, Heat Wave and Iron Tail (Sun and Moon have no move tutors). Seventeen older moves, from Rage and Skull Bash to Ominous Wind and Incinerate, can only come from earlier games.

Alolan NinetalesIceFairy

Alolan Ninetales starts with Dazzling Gleam, Imprison, Nasty Plot, Ice Beam, Ice Shard, Confuse Ray and Safeguard, and learns Dazzling Gleam again the moment it evolves. Its 31 TMs swap fire for ice and fairy power, with Ice Beam, Blizzard, Hail, Frost Breath, Dazzling Gleam and Aurora Veil, a protective screen that can only be raised in a hailstorm. Its 14 egg moves include Moonblast, Charm, Encore, Agility and Freeze-Dry (which has to be chain-bred), the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon tutors add Icy Wind, Aqua Tail, Heal Bell and Wonder Room, and from Alolan Vulpix it can bring Powder Snow, Icy Wind, Mist, Aurora Beam and Sheer Cold, plus Celebrate from an event Vulpix.

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!6 level-up · 18 TM/HM · + Alolan Ninetales

Let's Go, Eevee! has wild Ninetales on Routes 7 and 8 and lets you evolve an Alolan Vulpix into Alolan Ninetales; Let's Go, Pikachu! has no wild Ninetales. Ninetales starts with Hypnosis, Nasty Plot, Tackle, Tail Whip, Ember and Quick Attack and learns nothing else by levelling up, so Confuse Ray, Roar and Fire Spin have to be learned as a Vulpix. Its 18 TMs include Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Will-O-Wisp, Dark Pulse and a 200-power Solar Beam. There is no breeding and there are no move tutors in these games.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl17 level-up · 73 TM/HM · 20 egg · 2 tutor · + Alolan Ninetales

Sword has wild Ninetales at the Lake of Outrage, and both games have it in Max Raid Battles: at Giant's Cap in Shield, and at Giant's Cap, Dusty Bowl, Hammerlocke Hills, Stony Wilderness and the Lake of Outrage in Sword, whose Expansion Pass adds raids on the Isle of Armor and in the Crown Tundra. Alolan Ninetales comes by trade or, in Sword with the Expansion Pass, by evolving an Alolan Vulpix. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Shining Pearl players evolve a Vulpix, Brilliant Diamond players need a trade, and Alolan Ninetales cannot be obtained. One level-up list covers all four games: Ninetales now knows all 17 of its moves from level 1, everything from Ember, Tail Whip and Disable to Will-O-Wisp, Inferno and Fire Blast, so nothing has to be learned as a Vulpix any more. Sword and Shield teach 23 TMs and 21 TRs, Mystical Fire, Shadow Ball and Flare Blitz among them, and the Expansion Pass tutor adds Burning Jealousy and Scorching Sands; Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl go back to a Sinnoh-style list of 29 TMs. The egg moves are listed separately for each pair of games (seven and 13). Moves flagged in the transfer list can't be used in Sword and Shield.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus8 level-up · 14 tutor · + Alolan Ninetales

Ninetales lives in the Cobalt Coastlands, where an Alpha prowls Firespit Island, and appears in massive mass outbreaks there and in the Alabaster Icelands; Alolan Ninetales is evolved from Alolan Vulpix. Moves work differently here: each has a level at which it is learned and a higher level at which it is mastered, so it can be used in strong or agile style, and PP totals are lower. Both forms finally get a proper levelling curve, Ninetales running from Ember through Flame Wheel, Hex, Extrasensory and Flamethrower to Fire Blast at level 47. There are no TMs and no breeding; the move tutor offers 14 moves, including Mystical Fire, Shadow Ball and Ominous Wind. Power is listed for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style.

Ninetales in the anime

Debut EP038Electric Soldier Porygon · First major role EP058Riddle Me This · Its appearances on screen, and 7 other trainers who raised one.

Ninetales made its name in the anime as a creature of mystery. Its first real role was a shock, as Blaine's elegant fox knocked out Ash's Squirtle with a single Fire Spin at the Cinnabar Gym, but its finest hour came in Johto, when a Ninetales that had waited more than 200 years for its master conjured a whole mansion out of the fog and tried to keep Brock as its new Trainer. Years later, another Ninetales was still faithfully guarding a pirate's treasure on a deserted island, long after the pirate himself had vanished.

Ash has never owned one, so the species' other big moments belong to the people around him: Zane, who evolved his Vulpix for its golden coat and teamed it with Suzie's Vulpix against Team Rocket; Neesha, whose Ninetales was cloned by Mewtwo; and, from Alola onwards, the snowy Alolan form. Cerah's Ninetales inspired Lillie to teach Snowy Aurora Veil at the Pokémon Sled Jump Games, and Goh's very first Project Mew test was winning the trust of a stolen Alolan Ninetales on Mount Coronet so it could go home to Mount Lanakila.

Other trainers’ Ninetales

Blaine's Ninetales
Blaine
Gym Leader of Cinnabar Island (Indigo League)
Ninetales

First seen: EP058Riddle Me This

Blaine's Ninetales gave the species its first big moment in the anime. The riddle-loving Gym Leader opened his three-on-three battle with Ash by sending it out against Squirtle, a match-up that looked like a gift for Ash, until a single Fire Spin knocked Squirtle out cold. Blaine only swapped it for Rhydon when Ash sent out Charizard, and Ninetales never returned to the field: the battle came down to Magmar, and Ash finally won the Volcano Badge with Charizard in a rematch (EP059).

Goh's Ninetales
Goh
companion (Pokémon Journeys)
Ninetales (Alolan Form)

First seen: JN071Leaping Toward the Dream!

Goh's first assignment from Project Mew turned out to be a test in disguise. Pokémon hunters had stolen this Alolan Ninetales from Mount Lanakila, and when their plane crashed it was left stranded on the icy slopes of Mount Coronet in Sinnoh, deeply distrustful of humans. It froze Goh's Scizor solid with Ice Beam and whipped up a Blizzard, then held off Cinderace with Dazzling Gleam and Aurora Veil, until Goh walked up to it with no Pokémon out and, pressed against its barrier, promised to take it home. Ninetales lowered its Aurora Veil and let him catch it, which made Goh an official Project Mew challenger, and Project Mew's Chasers returned it to Mount Lanakila soon afterwards (JN080).

Cerah's Ninetales
Cerah
PokéSled Jumper (Sun & Moon: Ultra Adventures)
Vulpix → Ninetales (Alolan Form)

First seen: SM060Getting a Jump on the Competition!

Cerah is Alola's best PokéSled Jumper, and her Alolan Ninetales has been at her side since it was a little Alolan Vulpix. The pair make their entrance by shielding Lillie and Snowy with Aurora Veil, which gives Lillie the idea of teaching Snowy the same move. As guest stars of the Pokémon Sled Jump Games, they put on an exhibition in which Frost Breath launches Cerah's sled skywards before a combined Dazzling Gleam and Aurora Veil, a jump the Games' veteran master compares with his own from 90 years earlier. Cerah also tells Lillie how a bad fall with Vulpix once left her too scared to jump, and how her partner helped her find her nerve again. This was the anime debut of Alolan Ninetales.

Zane's Ninetales
Zane
Pokémon stylist (Johto League Champions)
Vulpix → Ninetales

First seen: EP169Beauty and the Breeder

Zane, Suzie's rival since nursery school, raised his Ninetales from a Vulpix and evolved it for the sake of its golden fur. Convinced that looks are everything, he entered it in the Pokémon Beauty Contest in Bonitaville as contestant number 38, right after Brock and the Vulpix Suzie had entrusted to him. When Team Rocket, disguised as doctors, made off with the contestants' Pokémon, Ninetales and Vulpix teamed up to scorch Victreebel with Flamethrower and send the trio flying with Fire Spin. Watching them work together, Zane admitted a Pokémon should be beautiful inside and out and proposed opening a salon with Suzie, and Brock bowed out, leaving Vulpix with its original Trainer.

Neesha's Ninetales
Neesha
Trainer summoned to New Island (Mewtwo Strikes Back)
Ninetales

First seen: M01Pokémon: The First Movie — Mewtwo Strikes Back

Neesha's Ninetales travelled to New Island with the rest of her team, including Shellshocker the Blastoise, Vileplume, Rapidash, Wigglytuff and Dewgong. Like the others, it was caught in one of Mewtwo's Mewtwo Balls and copied, giving Mewtwo a cloned Ninetales, before Mewtwo wiped everyone's memories and sent the Trainers home. The clone turned up again among Mewtwo's band of clones in the TV special Mewtwo Returns, the original flashed by in the montage of earlier films in The Rise of Darkrai, and Neesha's Ninetales played the same part in the 2019 remake, Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution.

Green's Ninetales
Green
Rival in Pokémon Evolutions (Kanto episode)
Ninetales

First seen: PE08The Discovery

In the Kanto chapter of Pokémon Evolutions, Green goes looking for Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave, only to learn that Elaine has already caught it. Frustrated at being beaten to the prize, she challenges Elaine, and after her Clefable falls to a single Zippy Zap from Pikachu, Ninetales hits back by overwhelming Elaine's Rapidash with Flamethrower. It is not enough to turn the tide, and Green still loses the battle.

  • PE08The Discovery · vs Rapidash Won
Rudy
Gym Leader of Trovita Island (Orange Islands)
Ninetales

First seen: EP103Misty Meets Her Match

Rudy, the Trovita Island Gym Leader, counts a Ninetales among the Pokémon at his Gym. It never saw any action, though: when Ash challenged him, Rudy battled with Electabuzz, Exeggutor and Starmie.

Ash & Ninetales

Ash has never caught a Ninetales, and his first meeting with one stung: at the Cinnabar Gym, Blaine's Ninetales flattened his Squirtle with a single Fire Spin (EP058). He got a measure of revenge in Unova, when Charizard brought down the pirate's Ninetales guarding a treasure on a deserted island (BW135). Before that, on a foggy night in Johto, a Ninetales that had waited centuries for its master held Totodile and Pikachu fast with its telekinesis, until Brock – the image of that long-lost master – called it back into its old Poké Ball (EP232). In Journeys he was right beside Goh on Mount Coronet when Goh won over a wary Alolan Ninetales and caught it (JN071).

Featured episodes

  • EP232Just Waiting On a FriendLost in the fog on the way to Mahogany Town, the gang are welcomed into a grand mansion by a young woman called Lokoko and her Ninetales, but Lokoko is an illusion: the Ninetales has waited over 200 years for a master who promised to be back in a month, and it wants Brock, the spitting image of his portrait, to take his place. Once the truth is out, Ninetales saves Brock from Team Rocket's Victreebel, its old Poké Ball shatters in the fall, and the freed fox sets off to see the world.
  • BW135Mystery on a Deserted Island!Alexa's treasure map leads the gang to a deserted island in the Decolore Islands, where the long-vanished pirate's Vulpix, now a Ninetales, still guards his hoard. It sends Team Rocket flying and fires Flamethrower and Energy Ball at the group until Ash's Charizard knocks it down, and the treasure turns out to be a chest of evolution stones in a hidden chamber marked by a Ninetales statue.
  • SM042Alola, Kanto! On the class trip to Kanto, Lillie's Snowy wanders up to a Ninetales in the woods at Professor Oak's Laboratory, and the big fox greets the little Alolan Vulpix by licking the top of its head.

Anime trivia

  • Ninetales's on-screen debut came in Electric Soldier Porygon (EP038), which has never been broadcast outside Japan, so English-speaking fans first saw one in The Battling Eevee Brothers (EP040).
  • The Pokémon League exam in The Ultimate Test (EP056) originally asked whether the saying 'a Ninetales lives for 1,000 years, a Wartortle for 10,000' was true; the English dub swapped it for a question about evolving Vulpix with a Fire Stone.
  • Riddle Me This (EP058) calls Fire Spin Ninetales's most powerful attack, then later calls Fire Blast the most powerful attack a Fire-type has. The next episode's recap muddles things further, crediting Ninetales's win over Squirtle to Ember.
  • In Beauty and the Breeder (EP169), Zane's Ninetales wears the number 38 and Brock's Vulpix the number 37, matching their National Pokédex numbers.
  • Just Waiting On a Friend (EP232) draws on Japanese kitsune folklore, the inspiration for Ninetales itself. In the English dub, Brock even claims he once owned a Ninetales, which his Vulpix never became, though his game counterpart does use one in Pokémon Stadium.
  • In Japan, Professor Oak's lecture on Ninetales (EP181) ended with a punning senryū: 'Kyūkon ga kaze wo hītara seki konkon', roughly 'when Ninetales catches a cold, it coughs kon kon', where kon kon is both a cough and a fox's cry.
  • When Snowy meets a Ninetales at Professor Oak's Laboratory in Alola, Kanto! (SM042), the fox stands in a shaft of sunlight just like the Ninetales of Just Waiting On a Friend, while an instrumental of 'Aim to Be a Pokémon Master -20th Anniversary-' plays.
  • Goh's Alolan Ninetales (JN071) was the first time the anime showed a regional form being caught outside its native region: an Alolan Pokémon caught in Sinnoh.

“Ninetales, the Fox Pokémon, is the evolved form of the Fire Pokémon Vulpix.”

Ninetales in the movies

2 films and 1 special featuring Ninetales.

Ninetales has never had a starring film role, but it has a habit of slipping on to the big screen. Its biggest part comes in the very first film, Mewtwo Strikes Back: the Trainer Neesha brings one to New Island, only for Mewtwo to capture it and clone it. The clone resurfaces in the TV special Mewtwo Returns, and the whole scene is replayed in the 2019 CGI remake. Elsewhere it has only had passing cameos.

Neesha's Ninetales; Mewtwo's clone Ninetales

Ninetales is one of the six Pokémon the Trainer Neesha brings to New Island, alongside Dewgong, Wigglytuff, Vileplume, Rapidash and her Blastoise, Shellshocker. When Mewtwo unleashes its Mewtwo Balls, Neesha tries in vain to protect her team: Ninetales is swallowed up and copied for the clone army. It never gets a battle of its own, but its clone returns in the TV special Mewtwo Returns. In the English dub it is voiced by Rachael Lillis.

Neesha's Ninetales; Mewtwo's clone Ninetales

The CGI remake brings back Neesha's whole team, Ninetales included, and hands it the same fate: Mewtwo's Balls capture most of her Pokémon, and the clone army gains a Ninetales of its own. This time Neesha and the other Trainers try to block the Balls and snatch them back instead of freezing in shock, which makes the moment a touch more desperate.

Ninetales in the Pokémon TCG

79 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Ninetales has been part of the card game from the very first booster. Ken Sugimori's holo came out in Japan's original Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reached English players in Base Set in January 1999. It paired Lure, which drags a Benched Pokémon into the Active spot, with an 80-damage Fire Blast, and that trickster streak has stuck ever since. Brock's Ninetales could shapeshift into other Pokémon, Light Ninetales guided spirits home with a festival flame, a Delta Species Ninetales turned Psychic, and card after card has hexed, confused, burned or lulled opponents to sleep. The big-rule versions came in waves: Ninetales ex in EX Hidden Legends (2004), Ninetales-EX in Generations, Ninetales BREAK in Evolutions, Ninetales V in Rebel Clash, and a 260-HP Ninetales ex in the 151 set that went on to lead its own Deluxe Battle Deck.

Sun & Moon brought a second fox. Alolan Ninetales arrived in 2017 as a Water-type GX before switching to Fairy, and its run includes Mitsuhiro Arita's Burning Shadows card, Full Arts, Rainbow Rares and a Shiny GX in Hidden Fates. The art has come a long way too. Ken Sugimori's early poses gave way to a parade of artists, from Atsuko Nishida and Kagemaru Himeno in the e-Card years to 5ban Graphics' glossy CG and, in the Scarlet & Violet era, full-scene Illustration Rares such as SIE NANAHARA's in Obsidian Flames. TCG Pocket has since brought old pictures back into play, including the art of the Game Boy-only Ninetales, and added a brand-new Alolan Ninetales ex.

Cards to know

  • Base Set 12/102 — Ken Sugimori's original holo: Lure drags a Benched Pokémon into the firing line, then Fire Blast scorches it for 80.
  • Gym Challenge 3/132 (Brock's Ninetales) — A shapeshifter so slippery that Japanese players combined it with Dark Vileplume, and it needed an erratum before it reached English players.
  • Neo Destiny 50/105 (Light Ninetales) — Its Guiding Flame is named after mukaebi, the fire lit to welcome spirits home at Obon. It's a gentle fox for a ghostly legend.
  • Guardians Rising 22/145 (Alolan Ninetales-GX) — The icy Alolan form's first card, later reissued as a Shiny Full Art in Hidden Fates.
  • Obsidian Flames 029/197 — Nine-Tailed Dance drops exactly nine damage counters, one for every tail.
  • TCG Pocket Everyday Wonders 009/069 — The Ninetales that only ever existed in the Game Boy game finally became a playable card in 2026, its coin-flipping Dancing Embers reborn as Ember Dance.

Ninetales in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

In print, Ninetales has been a manga regular since 1997. Pokémon Adventures introduced it with a tug-of-war between Red and Blue, and Blue's prize went on to scorch Red's Poliwrath in the Pokémon League final. Team Magma's Courtney later made one her signature partner, firing nine fireballs at once, and in Pokémon Battle Frontier Enta's oldest friend evolves from a Vulpix just in time to fight a Frontier Brain to a draw. Fittingly for a Pokémon whose tails carry a curse, the Mystery Dungeon manga Ginji's Rescue Team is built around that very legend, with the ancient Ninetales stepping in to clear the hero's name. More recently, Goh catches an Alolan Ninetales in the Journeys manga. On the bookshelf, a hungry Snorlax mistakes Ninetales for a bunch of bananas in the picture book Snorlax's Snack, and in the ebook Detective Pikachu: Episode 0 a wealthy client's Ninetales is away on a cruise while the mystery unfolds. It's in the Day 4 verse of the English Pokérap, and on the Pokémon Christmas Bash album it naturally owns the ninth day of Christmas.

Manga

Pocket Monsters PM019, 'Aim to be the No. 1 Pokémon!!'
Pokémon Pocket MonstersKoga · PM019 'Aim to be the No. 1 Pokémon!!' / volume 3 · 1997In Kosaku Anakubo's slapstick series, Koga enters his Ninetales in the No. 1 Pokémon Contest, a competition that Red's Pikachu ends up winning.
Pokémon Adventures PS018, 'A Tale of Ninetales': Red and Blue's tug-of-war over a wild Ninetales
Pokémon AdventuresBlue · PS018 'A Tale of Ninetales' / volume 2 · 1997Pokémon Adventures' first Ninetales starts a row. A wild one fends off Pikachu (with Blue giving the orders) and charges at Red in a burst of flame, until Red sends out Blue's Machoke, which evolves into Machamp and pins it down. Red's Poké Ball makes the catch, but Blue claims it because his Machamp did the weakening. It becomes one of Blue's aces: in the Pokémon League final its Fire Blast traps Red's Poliwrath in a column of superheated air and slams it into the ceiling (PS040), it takes on Agatha's Gengar on Cerise Island (PS077), and it's still on his team when he runs his own Gym in the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc.
Pokémon AdventuresTeam Rocket Grunts; the International Police · PS110 'Piloswine Whine' / volume 9 · 2001Outside the Tin Tower in Ecruteak City, Team Rocket Grunts set a Ninetales on Gold, along with a Cubone, a Drowzee and a Ledian. Much later, a Ninetales appears in a flashback among the International Police's Pokémon in the Black 2 & White 2 chapter 'Innocent Scientist' (PS528).
Pokémon AdventuresCourtney (Team Magma) · PS199 'Adding It Up with Plusle & Minun II' / volume 16 · 2003Team Magma's Courtney raised her Ninetales from a Vulpix, and a flashback (PS262) reveals she once used it in contests with Daisy Oak. On the Abandoned Ship it takes on Sapphire's Rono and Chic and burns away a Double Team decoy made with Plusle and Minun, and in Rusturf Tunnel it keeps Ruby on the back foot by firing nine fireballs at once (PS220). At the Cove Lily Motel, after Courtney forces Gym Leader Roxanne to surrender by taking hostages, Ninetales beats Nosepass to free Groudon from Block (PS248). In the final battle in Sootopolis City, it fights alongside Ruby's Mumu to grab the attention of Groudon and Kyogre (PS261).
Pokémon AdventuresWild (Alolan Ninetales) · PASM32 'Shock!! Father in the Pendant!' / Sun & Moon volume 6Alolan Ninetales makes its Pokémon Adventures debut in the Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc, where several are seen on Mount Lanakila along with Alolan Vulpix.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu ET16, 'You Bet Your Wife', set at Rudy's Trovita Gym
The Electric Tale of PikachuRudy · ET16 'You Bet Your Wife' / volume 4 · 1999In Toshihiro Ono's take on the Orange Islands, Trovita Gym Leader Rudy has a Ninetales among his Pokémon, just like his anime counterpart. It doesn't battle in the chapter, which first ran in the August 1999 issue of Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special.
Pokémon: Yeah! I Got Pokémon! chapter 29, where a Vulpix evolves into Ninetales
Pokémon: Yeah! I Got Pokémon!GDZ29 'Shinji Coming Back' / volume 2Ninetales arrives in Miho Asada's comedy series the hard way: a Vulpix evolves into one in chapter 29.
Pokémon Battle FrontierEnta · CBF1 'Enta Arrives at the Battle Frontier!' (as Vulpix); evolves in CBF6 'Final Battle: Versus The Salon Maiden' / volume 1 · 2005In Shigekatsu Ihara's Emerald-era manga, Enta's oldest partner starts out as a sensitive Vulpix: blamed for a lost Multi Battle, it runs off, and Enta wins it back by training alongside it, copying its moves, until its Flash Fire carries it to a better rematch. In the finale it touches the Fire Stone that Rald gave Enta and evolves. Ninetales then takes on Salon Maiden Anabel in the Battle Tower, beating her Snorlax with Hyper Beam before it and her Entei knock each other out for a draw.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue TeamThe legendary Ninetales (wild) · GRT3 'Goodbye to a Peaceful Village!' / volume 1 · 2006Makoto Mizobuchi's six-chapter Mystery Dungeon manga is built around Ninetales's most famous legend. Gengar spreads the tale of a human who touched a Ninetales's tail, whose Gardevoir took the curse in his place only to be abandoned by him, and claims that Ginji, a boy turned into a Torchic, is that human reborn. In GRT5 the legendary Ninetales itself arrives to clear Ginji's name and point the finger at Gengar for the disasters, and in the final chapter Gengar admits he is the cursed human. The story ran in English in Nintendo Power from September 2006.
Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution (movie manga)Neesha · Single volume, 12 July 2019 · 2019Machito Gomi's manga of the CGI remake keeps Neesha in the same role as on screen, and her line-up of Pokémon includes Ninetales. VIZ Media published it in English on 11 August 2020.

Sharp-eyed readers will spot a slip in the English print, which spells it 'Ninetails'.

Ninetales trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Ninetales such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

'Ninetales' does exactly what it says on the tin – nine tails – but swaps 'tails' for 'tales', a wink at the fairy tales and legends this mystical fox springs from. It may even nod to the cat o' nine tails, a whip, which suits a Pokémon that punishes anyone who grabs its tails. Beta versions of Red and Green called it 'Ninetai' and 'Nine Tales' in English. Its Japanese name, Kyukon, blends kyū ('nine') or kyūbiko ('nine-tailed fox') with kon, the cry a fox makes in Japanese, and may also hide kyūkon ('an old grudge') – perfect for a Pokémon whose curses last a millennium – and konro, a gas stove. Many languages took the same nine-tailed route: German Vulnona (from Vulpes, the fox genus, and Latin nona, 'ninth'), French Feunard (feu, renard and neuf – fire, fox and nine) and Chinese Jiǔwěi ('nine tails').

Design origins

Vulpix and Ninetales were designed by Atsuko Nishida, and their inspiration is no secret: a fox – most likely the red fox, filtered through the kitsune of Japanese legend. Kitsune are said to have many tails, to live for centuries and to command supernatural powers such as breathing fire, and the oldest take on spirit forms – which may be why Ninetales picks up Ghost- and Psychic-type moves like Confuse Ray, Hex and Extrasensory. Its look matches the kyūbi no kitsune in particular, whose fur is said to turn a white-gold when it gains its ninth tail after a thousand years. Alolan Ninetales swaps in the Arctic fox and its snowy winter coat, and its deity-like life on a sacred peak may echo Poliʻahu, the Hawaiian snow goddess of Mauna Kea. It could also draw on the tulikettu, a Finnish fire fox whose radiant fur is said to spark the northern lights – a neat fit for Aurora Veil, especially as the Finnish word for the aurora, revontulet, literally means 'fox fires'. Concept art of Alolan Ninetales from the development of Sun and Moon has been released too.
