Plasma Storm Lugia booster packBlack & White—Plasma Storm hit English shelves on February 6, 2013 as the eighth main expansion of the Black & White series, a 138-card set that brought the villainous Team Plasma to the Trading Card Game for the first time. Adapted from the Japanese expansion Plasma Gale (プラズマゲイル), it wrapped the faction from Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 in a distinctive blue-and-silver card frame and built an entire block around them.

Beyond the story hook, Plasma Storm is remembered for two things: a pair of stunning Shiny secret-rare reprints of Charizard and Blastoise, and a Trainer line-up — Colress, Colress Machine, Hypnotoxic Laser and Virbank City Gym — that reshaped competitive play for years.

From the official set description:

Team Plasma storms into the Pokémon Trading Card Game! The mysterious organization arrives with a chilling new plan and a set full of powerful Pokémon-EX — including Lugia-EX, the Kyurem-EX pair, and the Legendary birds — plus game-changing Trainers and the debut of Team Plasma’s signature blue-and-silver cards. There can be no calm before this storm!

Enter Team Plasma: A Faction Becomes a Format

Plasma Storm marked the English TCG debut of Team Plasma, the villains from Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, here led by the scientist Colress. Team Plasma cards received a distinctive blue-and-silver border, and Team Plasma Pokémon were shown wrapped in a blue aura. The set seeded the archetype’s engine — Plasma Energy, Colress Machine, the Plasma Frigate Stadium and the Team Plasma Grunt — alongside Team Plasma Pokémon such as Lugia-EX and the Kyurem-EX pair. The faction wouldn’t fully take over the metagame until Plasma Freeze expanded the toolbox, but Plasma Storm framed the entire three-set block around it.

The Shiny Secret Rares

The set’s headline chase cards are the Shiny secret rares Charizard (#136/135) and Blastoise (#137/135) — alternate-colored versions of the Boundaries Crossed cards, given brand-new illustrations by Ayaka Yoshida. Shiny Charizard appears in a striking dark coloration and Shiny Blastoise in purple, and both keep their tournament-viable text, Blastoise’s Deluge Ability chief among them. They are frequently miscalled Base Set reprints, but the artwork and colouring are entirely their own. The blend of beloved species, shiny rarity and secret-rare scarcity makes them the most sought-after cards in the set by a wide margin.

The Full Art Lineup and Chase Cards

Above the standard Ultra Rares sit five borderless Full Art cards, #131–#135. Four are Pokémon-EX — Victini-EX (#131), Articuno-EX (#132), Cobalion-EX (#133) and Lugia-EX (#134) — while #135 is a Full Art of the Team Plasma Supporter Colress, not an EX. Lugia-EX is the standout, doubling as a defining Plasma-deck attacker and the priciest Full Art in the set; Articuno-EX sits close behind among collectors. The textured Full Art frame, with blue Team Plasma styling on the relevant cards, made this lineup the primary pull-driven pursuit alongside the two Shiny secrets.

The Trainer Engine That Shaped a Metagame

Plasma Storm delivered some of the most format-defining Trainers of the era. Colress became a universal draw Supporter, scaling with every Pokémon in play and rewarding wide boards. Hypnotoxic Laser — an Item that Poisoned and sometimes put the Defending Pokémon to Sleep — paired with the Virbank City Gym Stadium to double Poison to 20 damage per checkup, warping knockout math across the whole XY era. Colress Machine accelerated Plasma Energy onto Team Plasma Pokémon, and staples like Eviolite and Scramble Switch rounded out an engine that long outlived the set.

Print Versions

In English, Plasma Storm shipped in booster packs with four wrapper arts — Articuno, Lugia, Infernape and Liepard — plus two theme decks: Plasma Claw and Plasma Shadow, and a Plasma Storm Elite Trainer Box. The English set was based on the Japanese expansion Plasma Gale (プラズマゲイル), which introduced the Team Plasma cards at the heart of the release.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Plasma Storm packs some serious chase power. The two Shiny secret rares tower over everything else, but the Full Art EXs and the gold Random Receiver round out a rewarding master set. Prices below are approximate market ranges and move over time — treat them as a guide rather than a quote.

Charizard

Charizard (Shiny Secret Rare) — #136/135

The crown jewel of Plasma Storm: a Shiny, dark-colored Charizard secret rare with all-new art by Ayaka Yoshida. It marries the hobby’s most popular species with secret-rare scarcity, and prices have climbed hard in recent years. Expect roughly $250–$500 for a clean raw copy (higher on live listings), with gem-mint PSA 10 examples in the $3,500–$6,500 range depending on population and timing.

Blastoise

Blastoise (Shiny Secret Rare) — #137/135

The companion Shiny secret rare, a purple Blastoise that also happens to carry the tournament-relevant Deluge Ability. It trails only Charizard in the set’s value chart. Raw near-mint copies generally run $140–$300, with PSA 10 examples around $1,500–$3,000.

Lugia-EX

Lugia-EX (Full Art) — #134/135

The most valuable Full Art in the set and a card that ties collector and competitive demand together — it was also a defining Team Plasma attacker. Raw copies typically sell for $120–$250, with graded PSA 10 examples reaching $1,000–$2,500.

Articuno-EX

Articuno-EX (Full Art) — #132/135

A legendary-bird Full Art with strong crossover appeal, consistently the runner-up Full Art behind Lugia-EX. Expect roughly $80–$200 raw and $700–$2,000 for a PSA 10, a wide band reflecting a thin graded population.

Random Receiver

Random Receiver (Gold Secret Rare) — #138/135

The set’s gold-bordered Trainer secret rare and the third card needed to complete a master set. Far more affordable than the two Shiny Pokémon secrets but still a completionist’s target, at about $30–$55 raw and $300–$500 in PSA 10.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Plasma Storm’s real legacy is its Trainer engine. Several cards from this set defined the 2013 metagame and lived on for years in the Expanded format.

Colress

Colress (#118/135) — Universal Draw Supporter

Colress shuffles your hand into your deck and draws a card for every Pokémon in play — yours and your opponent’s. It rewarded wide, bench-heavy boards and became one of the most-played draw Supporters of the entire BW/XY Expanded era, seeing play far beyond Plasma decks. A defining consistency engine of the 2013 format.

Hypnotoxic LaserHypnotoxic Laser

Hypnotoxic Laser (#123/135) + Virbank City Gym (#126/135) — Status & Damage Engine

Hypnotoxic Laser is an Item that Poisons — and, on a coin flip, puts to Sleep — the Defending Pokémon. Paired with the Virbank City Gym Stadium, also in this set, Poison dealt 20 per checkup instead of 10, letting decks reach exact knockout numbers they otherwise couldn’t. The Laser-plus-Virbank combo warped competitive damage math for years.

Colress Machine

Colress Machine (#119/135) — Plasma Energy Acceleration

Colress Machine attaches a Plasma Energy from the discard pile onto a Team Plasma Pokémon, giving the emerging archetype the speed to power up attackers a turn early. Combined with the Deoxys-EX and Thundurus-EX added in Plasma Freeze, it became a core piece of the dominant Plasma decks of mid-to-late 2013.

Black Kyurem-EX

Black Kyurem-EX (#95/135) — Heavy-Hitting Attacker

Its Black Ballista attack dealt 200 damage — enough to one-shot most EXs — by discarding Energy. It became the finisher in the top-tier Blastoise deck, where Blastoise’s Deluge Ability flooded it with Water Energy. That Blastoise / Black Kyurem build was one of the defining decks of the 2013 Standard format.

Lugia-EX

Lugia-EX (#108/135) — Plasma Attacker

A Team Plasma EX whose Plasma Gale attack hit harder when powered by Plasma Energy, giving early Plasma builds a flexible, hard-hitting anchor and pointing toward the archetype that would take over once Plasma Freeze arrived. It’s also the set’s most valuable Full Art, tying competitive and collector interest together.

Trivia

  • Not Base Set reprints. Charizard #136 and Blastoise #137 are often called Base Set artwork reprints, but they’re actually Shiny (alternate-color) secret rares with all-new art by Ayaka Yoshida.
  • Team Plasma’s Western debut. Plasma Storm was the first English expansion to feature Team Plasma cards, complete with unique blue-and-silver borders and a blue aura around Team Plasma Pokémon.
  • An English/Japanese number mismatch. Plasma Storm adapts the Japanese expansion Plasma Gale — it’s the eighth Black & White set in English but only the seventh in Japan. (The later Spiral Force and Thunder Knuckle sets became the next English set, Plasma Freeze.)
  • A gold secret. Random Receiver #138 is the set’s gold-bordered Trainer secret rare — the third and most affordable of the three secrets needed to complete a master set.
  • A poison-math engine. Hypnotoxic Laser paired with the Virbank City Gym Stadium — both debuting here — doubled Poison to 20 damage per checkup, a combo that warped competitive knockout calculations well into the XY era.
