Hidden Fates Elite Trainer Box

Some sets are remembered for their metagame; Hidden Fates is remembered for one card, one finish, and one very good idea. Released in August 2019, this small special set paired a compact 68-card numbered main set with something far shinier bolted on the side: the Shiny Vault.

The Shiny Vault is a 94-card subset (SV1–SV94) made up entirely of shiny Pokémon, shiny Pokémon-GX and shiny full-art Trainers — the first time the game had leaned this hard into shinies in years. And sitting at its centre is the card that launched a thousand pack-openings: Shiny Charizard-GX (SV49), arguably the single most-wanted pull of 2019 and a poster child for the collecting boom that followed.

True to the era’s specials, there was no booster box. Packs came only through the Elite Trainer Box, GX tins (Charizard, Gyarados, Raichu) and premium collections — and the Hidden Fates ETB became so sought-after that The Pokémon Company reprinted it repeatedly and it still sold well above retail for years.

Reception was enormous. Hidden Fates is the textbook “reprint/collector set done right” — small, glossy, packed with shinies, and crowned by a Charizard everyone wanted. It didn’t need to shake up the metagame; it just needed to be irresistible, and it absolutely was.

A wild set loaded with all-time favorites, the Pokémon TCG: Hidden Fates expansion is a collector’s dream and a player’s paradise!

— Official Pokémon TCG: Hidden Fates expansion description

Print Versions & Collectors Info

Hidden Fates is unusual: it was never sold as loose booster boxes at retail. Instead the English release (August 23rd, 2019) turned up only inside special products — the Elite Trainer Box, the Charizard-GX, Gyarados-GX and Raichu-GX tins, Pin Collections and the Ultra-Premium Collection. It’s a compact, curated release of 163 cards: a main set topped off with the 94-card ‘Shiny Vault’ (SV1–SV94) of shiny reprints.

How it compares to Japan and Korea. The English set is a slimmed-down cut of a far bigger Japanese release. Japan got GX Ultra Shiny (SM8b) — a high-class pack of roughly 250 cards, including around 100 secret-rare shinies, back on November 2nd, 2018 — much larger and rarer than the Western version, with its own S and SSR rarities. Korea released the very same set as Ultra Shiny GX, a Korean-language edition of that Japanese high-class pack. So while collectors in Japan and Korea chased a sprawling premium set, the English market got Hidden Fates: a tighter, more affordable ‘best of’ built around the Shiny Vault.

The English packs came in four artworks — Charizard, Mewtwo, Mew and the Legendary Birds — shown here alongside the Japanese and Korean high-class packs:

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Shiny Charizard-GX

Shiny Charizard-GX — SV49/SV94

The card. The Shiny Vault’s crown jewel and the most-chased pull of the set by a mile — a shiny black Charizard-GX that became a symbol of the whole 2019 Pokémon craze.

Charizard-GX

Charizard-GX — #9/68

The “regular” numbered Charizard-GX — still one of the most popular cards in the set, and a far more attainable way to land a Hidden Fates Charizard.

Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX

Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX — #69/68

The numbered set’s secret-rare Rainbow — a legendary-bird triple Tag Team and the headline chase outside the Shiny Vault.

Shiny Vault

The Shiny Vault (SV1–SV94)

The real draw isn’t any one card — it’s the whole subset. Ninety-four shinies, every one a premium pull, turning each pack into a lottery ticket.

A Collector’s Set — With Playable Shinies

Let’s be honest about what Hidden Fates is: a collector set first. The 68-card numbered main set is largely casual, Kanto-gym-leader-flavoured Trainers and reprinted GXs, and it never defined a competitive format. Its genuine playability lived in the Shiny Vault reprints — shiny full-art versions of premier format Supporters like Cynthia (SV82) and Guzma (SV84), plus shiny Pokémon-GX — giving competitive players a bling upgrade for cards they already ran. A great reprint set; just don’t come to it looking for a new archetype.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Hidden Fates was a collector-focused mini-set built around its Shiny Vault subset, so the 68-card main set had limited Standard impact. Its real competitive value came from one Tag Team GX attacker plus several Kanto Gym-leader Supporters that fueled 2019-2020 control and combo decks.

Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX 44/68

Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno-GX (Tag Team GX Attacker)

A 300 HP Colorless Tag Team whose Trinity Burn hit for 210 and whose Sky Legends-GX spread 110 damage across three of the opponent’s Pokémon. It was the set’s flagship competitive card, played as an attacker in spread and toolbox builds and later paired with Arceus & Dialga & Palkia.

Lt. Surge's Strategy 60/68

Lt. Surge’s Strategy (Combo / Comeback Supporter)

Lets you play three Supporters in a single turn while you have more Prize cards remaining than your opponent. It was a strong combo and comeback engine, chaining draw and search Supporters to build explosive turns or claw back from a Prize deficit.

Jessie & James 58/68

Jessie & James (Control / Mill Disruption Supporter)

Forces each player to discard two cards with the opponent discarding first, making it a repeatable hand-disruption tool. It became a core piece of control and mill decks like Doll Stall and Pidgeotto Control that grind opponents out of resources.

Bill's Analysis 51/68

Bill’s Analysis (Consistency Supporter)

Digs seven cards deep and grabs up to two Trainer cards, giving decks a reliable way to find key Items, Tools, or Stadiums. It saw play in control and toolbox lists that valued consistent access to specific Trainers over raw card draw.

Erika's Hospitality 56/68

Erika’s Hospitality (Draw / Refuel Supporter)

Draws a card for each of the opponent’s Pokémon in play, usable only with four or fewer other cards in hand. It offered strong late-hand refuel against wide boards, giving control and midrange decks a situational draw option.

Trivia & Pop Culture

  • Shinies, revived at scale. The Shiny Vault brought shiny cards back in a big way — a template The Pokémon Company would reuse for Shining Fates and Paldean Fates.
  • Shiny Charizard mania. SV49 became the era’s most-wanted pull and a major driver of the late-2019/2020 Pokémon boom.
  • The un-findable ETB. The Hidden Fates Elite Trainer Box was reprinted again and again yet still commanded well above MSRP — one of the most scalped products of its time.
  • No booster box. Packs only came through the ETB, tins and collections — scarcity that only fed the frenzy.
