Synopsis
Ash beats Sawyer in a rematch, then meets Alain for the first time and loses a fierce one-on-one battle in which his transformed Greninja falls to Alain’s Mega Charizard X. In a three-on-three rematch, Hawlucha quickly defeats Sawyer’s newly evolved Shelgon with Flying Press, and Pikachu beats his new Honedge with Iron Tail and Thunderbolt. Sawyer’s final Pokémon is Sceptile, evolved from Grovyle, and Ash answers with Greninja. Sceptile’s Leaf Storm traps Greninja in a cyclone, but when Ash calls out to it, Greninja transforms and knocks Sceptile out with a single Aerial Ace before reverting, leaving both it and Ash exhausted. Alain, who came to the area hearing of a Pokémon with Mega Evolution potential, watches in surprise as his Mega Ring fails to react. Sawyer suggests that Ash and Greninja may be becoming one another during the change, an idea that delights Ash.
At Lysandre Labs, Lysandre tells Alain that his Mega Evolution research has made no progress, and that Mairin’s Chespin, Chespie, is still in a coma. The group says goodbye to Sawyer at sunset, while on a distant island Team Flare fire a beam from a machine filled with Zygarde Cells that mutates the trees into huge red growths. The next morning, a mechanical hand smashes through the Pokémon Center window and seizes Pikachu. Ash chases Team Rocket and dodges Psybeam and Shadow Ball, until a Steel Wing blocks Gourgeist’s Dark Pulse: Alain and his Charizard have arrived. Charizard frees Pikachu with Dragon Claw, Pikachu blasts Team Rocket away, and Alain, noticing the strength of Pikachu’s attack, asks to battle Greninja. Ash, spotting the Mega Stone on Charizard, eagerly accepts.
With Clemont as referee, Charizard blocks Water Shuriken with Dragon Claw and hits Greninja with Flamethrower, then Mega Evolves into Mega Charizard X. Flamethrower burns away Greninja’s Double Team, and two super-effective Thunder Punches leave Greninja reeling, but it stands up and transforms once more. Alain is puzzled that Ash has achieved this without a Mega Stone or Key Stone. Aerial Ace and Cut clash with Thunder Punch, until Alain orders Blast Burn, which knocks Greninja out, and Ash collapses beside it. It is Ash’s first loss in a long time. Ash checks on his partner, praises the battle and introduces himself, and the two Trainers shake hands. Clemont promises to help Ash and Greninja understand their new power through science, and the narrator warns that this meeting marks the start of the greatest crisis Kalos will ever face. On the island, Xerosic reports to Lysandre as a plane descends.
