Vivid Voltage booster pack

Sword & Shield—Vivid Voltage electrified the Pokémon TCG when it launched on 13 November 2020 as the fourth main expansion of the Sword & Shield era. Built around the Electric type and headlined by a Gigantamax Pikachu VMAX, the set fused cards from Japan’s Amazing Volt Tackle with the debut wave of Amazing Pokémon from Legendary Heartbeat to create one of the most visually striking releases of Generation VIII.

Vivid Voltage’s biggest claim to fame is that it was the first English-language set to feature Amazing Rare cards — a brand-new rarity showing Legendary and Mythical Pokémon painted in vivid watercolour rainbows, each marked with a distinctive “A” symbol. Six Amazing Rares appear in the set: Celebi, Raikou, Zacian, Zamazenta, Jirachi and Rayquaza. Alongside them, collectors chased a deep lineup of Pokémon V and VMAX, full-art Trainers, rainbow rares and gold secret rares.

The full English set runs to 203 cards — 185 in the main numbering plus 18 secret rares (186–203). The undisputed chase card is the secret rare Pikachu VMAX (188/185), the beloved Gigantamax Pikachu whose oversized, rotund artwork earned it the affectionate nickname “Chonkachu.” From beginner-friendly theme decks to the Pikachu-VMAX-branded Elite Trainer Box, Vivid Voltage gave players and collectors alike plenty of reasons to charge up.

Prepare to discover new Pokémon V and Pokémon VMAX alongside vibrant Amazing Pokémon in Sword & Shield—Vivid Voltage! A colossal Pikachu VMAX brings the lightning, while a startling new kind of card — Amazing Pokémon — lights up the expansion with Legendary and Mythical Pokémon in vivid, rainbow-hued art.

Set Highlights: A Colossal Charge

Vivid Voltage is stacked with powerful Pokémon VMAX, from the set’s Electric mascot to a rainbow-splashed Amazing Rare. Here are some of the cards that defined the expansion:

Vivid Voltage launched worldwide on 13 November 2020 and was printed in enormous quantities, making sealed product widely available and generally affordable compared with earlier Sword & Shield sets. English booster packs came in several different pack artworks, and the set was sold through the full range of Sword & Shield product types.

Core sealed products included single booster packs, the 36-pack booster box, the Pikachu VMAX Elite Trainer Box, the Build & Battle Box, and two theme decks — a Fire-type Charizard deck and a Water-type Drednaw deck. Blister packs, tins and multi-pack collections rounded out the retail lineup.

The set was later supported by special collections built around its chase cards — including Pikachu VMAX-themed boxes and the Vivid Voltage Fall Collector Chest — keeping the Electric mascot front and centre throughout the 2020 holiday season.

Because it was printed so heavily, Vivid Voltage remains one of the more accessible Sword & Shield sets to open today, with the secret rare Pikachu VMAX being the standout exception on the secondary market.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

Vivid Voltage is an English compilation drawn mainly from Japan’s Amazing Volt Tackle (S4), released 18 September 2020, with the Amazing Rare cards imported from the earlier Legendary Heartbeat (S3a) subset. As with every English set of the era, the cards were renumbered and reorganised into a single 185-card main set with an additional run of secret rares.

Its headline distinction is historic: Vivid Voltage was the first English-language expansion to include Amazing Rare cards. The Amazing Pokémon mechanic had debuted in Japan a few months earlier in Legendary Heartbeat, and Vivid Voltage brought it West. Six Amazing Rares feature Legendary and Mythical Pokémon rendered in vivid watercolour rainbows and marked with a distinctive “A” rarity symbol:

Celebi
Celebi (Amazing Rare) — #9/185
Raikou
Raikou (Amazing Rare) — #50/185
Zacian
Zacian (Amazing Rare) — #82/185
Rayquaza
Rayquaza (Amazing Rare) — #138/185

Beyond the Amazing Rares, the English set’s secret rares (186–203) collect the rainbow rares, gold Trainers and full-art alternates — including the famous “Chonkachu” Pikachu VMAX at 188/185 — that sit above the standard 185-card numbering.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Vivid Voltage was printed heavily, so most cards are affordable — but a handful of chase cards command real money, led by one of the most iconic Pikachu cards ever printed.

Pikachu VMAX

Pikachu VMAX (Secret Rare) — #188/185

The crown jewel of the set and one of the most recognisable cards of the entire Sword & Shield era. This secret rare Gigantamax Pikachu VMAX — affectionately nicknamed Chonkachu for its rotund, oversized artwork — was the card everyone wanted to pull, and it remains Vivid Voltage’s most valuable card by a wide margin.

Pikachu VMAX

Pikachu VMAX — #44/185

The standard full-art Pikachu VMAX is a striking card in its own right and one of the set’s most popular pulls. Far more common than its secret rare counterpart, it stays in steady demand thanks to Pikachu’s enduring appeal.

Charizard

Charizard — #25/185

A fan-favourite Charizard that anchors the Charizard theme deck. It isn’t the rarest card in the set, but Charizard’s popularity means clean copies — especially the holo — are always sought after by collectors.

Rayquaza

Rayquaza (Amazing Rare) — #138/185

The pick of the Amazing Rares for many collectors, Rayquaza’s swirling watercolour-rainbow artwork makes it a centrepiece card. As one of only six Amazing Pokémon in the set, it carries both aesthetic and historical appeal.

Zacian

Zacian (Amazing Rare) — #82/185

Zacian’s Amazing Rare pairs the Legendary wolf of Sword with the same vibrant rainbow treatment. It’s one of the harder Amazing Rares to pull cleanly and a favourite among Galar-era collectors.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

During its time in Standard, Vivid Voltage supplied several competitively relevant cards, from an aggressive Electric attacker to a reliable VMAX draw engine and useful support tools.

Pikachu VMAX

Pikachu VMAX — #44/185

An aggressive Electric attacker whose G-Max Volt Crash hits hard while disrupting the opponent’s board. Backed by Electric acceleration, Pikachu VMAX saw genuine competitive play during the Vivid Voltage era.

Orbeetle VMAX

Orbeetle VMAX — #21/185

Orbeetle VMAX and its supporting Orbeetle line provided a strong draw-and-setup engine, making it a popular consistency piece across a range of decks.

Snorlax

Snorlax — #131/185

A single-Energy wall that could stall opponents behind a big body, Snorlax found a home in control-oriented builds looking to slow the game down.

Telescopic Sight

Telescopic Sight — #160/185

A Pokémon Tool that added damage to attacks against Pokémon V — a cheap, effective tech that helped aggressive decks push through the era’s V and VMAX attackers.
