01Overview

Meet Raichu

Everything you need to know about the Mouse Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Raichu is what happens when Pikachu's spark grows into a storm. Touch a Thunder Stone to the famous Electric Mouse and it shoots up to 0.8 m, its fur deepening to a rich orange-brown over a white belly, its ears curling at the tips and its tail stretching into a long, whip-thin cord that ends in a lightning bolt. Brown patches tip its paws, two stripes cross its back, and the yellow circles on its cheeks mark the pouches where all that electricity is stored.

And what electricity. Raichu can unleash bursts of more than 100,000 volts – enough to floor a foe several times its size – and carries so much charge that its whole body gives off a faint glow in the dark. Its tail doubles as a lightning conductor: planted in the ground, it earths Raichu's own current so it never shocks itself, and when its pouches run low it raises the tail to pull power straight out of the air.

“Its electric charges can reach even 100,000 volts. Careless contact can cause even an Indian elephant to faint.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996

All that stored energy comes at a price. The more charge builds up, the twitchier its muscles and the shorter its temper; its ears stand bolt upright, and even its own Trainer is wise to keep a respectful distance. One theory is that the build-up simply stresses it out. To calm down, Raichu plants its tail and discharges into the earth – which is why patches of scorched ground are a tell-tale sign of a Raichu nest nearby.

For a Pokémon that has been around since Red and Green, Raichu is surprisingly rare. It is hardly ever found in the wild, and so many Trainers prefer Pikachu's looks that a fully evolved one is an unusual sight. Its most famous example is a cautionary tale: Lt. Surge's Raichu, evolved too early to learn speedy moves, which flattened Ash's Pikachu in the anime – only for Pikachu to refuse a Thunder Stone and win the rematch on sheer speed.

Yet Raichu has quietly become one of the most varied Pokémon of all. In Alola it turns into a dreamy Psychic-type surfer, and the Mega Dimension expansion for Legends: Z-A gave it not one but two Mega Evolutions, Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, each borrowing a little of Pikachu's look. For fans who always stood up for the bigger mouse, it was a long-awaited moment in the spotlight.

How big is Raichu?

Raichu0.8 m (2′07″)

At 0.8 m (2′07″) Raichu stands about as tall as a dining table, and at 30.0 kg (66.1 lb) it weighs about as much as a Labrador – five times as heavy as Pikachu, while its surf-loving Alolan cousin is a lighter 21.0 kg (46.3 lb).

Mega Raichu X official artwork
Mega Raichu XLegends: Z-A – Mega Dimension DLC (from 10 December 2025); Pokémon Champions (from version 1.1.0, 17 June 2026); Pokémon GO (from 18 July 2026) — Mega Evolves with the Raichunite X. It keeps Raichu's body but takes Pikachu's colours – bright yellow fur, red cheeks – and its tail splits into two Pikachu-shaped tails, while its bigger ears turn black with golden tips and a pair of fangs pokes out. The twin tails generate an electromagnetic force that lets it float and zip through the air, it fights by packing electricity into its fists, and in flight its silhouette makes the letter X. Base stats 60/135/95/90/95/110 (585). In Legends: Z-A, both Raichunites are the prize for beating the Raichu Duo, Tracie and Griddella, in Side Mission 139, 'The Dauntless Raichu Duo', in Hyperspace Lumiose.

Mega Raichu YLegends: Z-A – Mega Dimension DLC (from 10 December 2025); Pokémon Champions (from version 1.1.0, 17 June 2026); Pokémon GO (from 18 July 2026) — Mega Evolves with the Raichunite Y. This time the body is Pikachu's while the colours and tail stay Raichu's: lighter orange-brown fur, blue eyes, an oversized lightning-bolt tail tip and two horn-like yellow tufts on its head, shaped like lightning bolts. Amplified electricity zigzags between its tail and horns, and it fires bolts from both that form the letter Y. Built for short, decisive battles, it is wild and combative and prefers a straight brawl to clever tactics. Base stats 60/100/55/160/80/130 (585). Its Raichunite Y comes from the same Raichu Duo battle as the X stone; in Pokémon Champions each stone costs 2,000 VP at the Frontier Shop.

EvolutionEvolves from Pikachu with a Thunder Stone in Alola (Sun & Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon) – every Pikachu evolves into this form there, wherever it came from.

Nobody was quite sure at first why Pikachu turn into something so different in Alola. Islanders like to joke that the culprit is pancakes – above all the ones made to a secret Alolan recipe, which Alolan Raichu adores – while researchers point more soberly to its diet, together with the islands' weather and climate. Whatever the cause, the result is an Electric- and Psychic-type that uses psychokinesis to steer its electricity, strikes with star-shaped thunderbolts and gathers psychic energy into its tail so it can hop aboard and float along on it like a surfboard.

It looks the part of a beach bum, too: rounder and softer than a Kanto Raichu, with lighter fur, big blue eyes, huge yellow ears with a spiral at the base, white stripes on its back and creamy white paws. It is a keen surfer that practises on the beaches and rides the waves on psychic power – though, as it surfs on its own tail rather than a board, it has picked up a cheeky nickname: 'hodad', surfers' slang for a poser who isn't the real deal. Rub its cheeks and a sweet scent wafts out – along with a mild electric shock. It is the only Pokémon that can use the Z-Move Stoked Sparksurfer and the only one with the Ability Surge Surfer.

Raichu is one of the Pokémon that got faster with age. In Red, Green, Blue and Yellow it had 60 HP, 90 Attack, 55 Defense, 100 Speed and a single Special stat of 90; when Gold and Silver split Special in two, Sp. Atk kept the 90 and Sp. Def was set at 80. X & Y then raised its Speed from 100 to 110, taking its total from 475 to 485. Alolan Raichu has the same 485 total but trades 5 points of Attack and Defense for 5 extra Sp. Atk and Sp. Def, while Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y both jump to 585 – X piling on Attack and Defense, Y on Sp. Atk and Speed. Base friendship was 70 in Generations II–VII and has been 50 since Sword & Shield; its base experience yield was 122 in Generations I–IV, 214 in Black & White, 218 in Sun & Moon and is 243 today. It reaches level 100 at 1,000,000 Exp. (Medium Fast), and its catch rate of 75 has never changed.

Spin-offs & cameos

Super Smash Bros.

Raichu itself has never stepped into the ring – for years its only Smash Bros. presence was a name-check in Pikachu's trophy descriptions in Melee and Brawl, and in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U's Palutena's Guidance, where Viridi chats about Pikachu's evolutionary family. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finally let the family's surfer join the fun: Alolan Raichu is a Poké Ball Pokémon that rides its tail around the stage, hopping and shocking anyone in its path for 8% damage. That made it the first Poké Ball Pokémon from the same evolutionary line as playable fighters – in this case Pichu and Pikachu. It is also a two-star support spirit with Bury Immunity, earned by beating a female Pikachu on an electrified Tortimer Island – a Pikachu who starts the fight holding a Poké Ball with Alolan Raichu inside.

Pokémon GO

Raichu has been in Pokémon GO since launch day on 6 July 2016, evolving from Pikachu for 50 Pikachu Candy, and its Shiny form arrived on 9 August 2017 during the Pikachu Outbreak event. Because it evolves from Pikachu, it has worn an entire wardrobe over the years – festive, party and witch hats, Original and World Caps, flower crowns, a beanie, cherry blossoms, holiday outfits and a detective hat among them. Alolan Raichu landed in three-star raids on 19 July 2018 and got its Shiny on 23 November 2018 at the Let's Go Celebration, and both forms learned Surf on 1 June 2025 and Volt Tackle on 8 September 2026. The biggest moment came on 18 July 2026, when Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y debuted in Super Mega Raids on Raichu Super Mega Raid Day – Shiny from day one, with Volt Tackle+ and Zap Cannon+ as their special Mega moves – before returning for the Mega Ascension event at the end of August.

Battler

Raichu was an early-download bonus, and both Mega Evolutions arrived in version 1.1.0 on 17 June 2026; the Raichunite X and Y cost 2,000 VP each at the Frontier Shop.

Moves

For most of its history Raichu was the Pokémon that stopped learning. In Red and Green it knew three moves and never learned another by levelling up, so savvy trainers kept their Pikachu unevolved until Quick Attack and Agility were in the bag before reaching for the Thunder Stone. Gold and Silver handed it Thunderbolt from the start, and each generation after that filled the gaps from the outside instead: Pichu's Egg Moves, TMs from Zap Cannon to Volt Switch, and move tutors from FireRed and LeafGreen onwards.

Alola then gave the family a second branch. Alolan Raichu kept the electric kit but added Psychic, Psyshock, Calm Mind and its own surf-riding Z-Move, Stoked Sparksurfer. Since Sword and Shield the old rule has flipped: Raichu now inherits almost all of Pikachu's list at level 1 and learns Thunder Punch (or Psychic, for the Alolan form) the moment it evolves. Legends: Arceus and Legends: Z-A finally give it a real levelling curve, and Z-A keeps Volt Tackle waiting until level 99 for the truly patient.

Signature moves

ElectricThunderbolt

Raichu's calling card. Red and Blue only offered it on TM24; Gold and Silver made it a starting move, and it stayed one right up to Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (Let's Go aside). Scarlet and Violet oddly make it wait until level 5, and Alolan Raichu turns it into Stoked Sparksurfer.

ElectricThunder Punch

The move Raichu learns the instant the Thunder Stone touches Pikachu in Let's Go, Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Scarlet, Violet and Legends: Z-A. Before that it was a Gold and Silver TM, an Egg Move from Ampharos and a move tutor favourite.

ElectricThunder

The big storm: TM25 from Red and Blue to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, a starting move from Sword and Shield to Scarlet and Violet, and the end of the road at level 47 in Legends: Arceus and level 40 in Legends: Z-A.

Psychic (Alolan Raichu)

The move that shows this Raichu is half Psychic: Alolan Raichu learns it on evolving in every game it appears in, from Sun and Moon to Legends: Z-A.

Stoked Sparksurfer (Alolan Raichu, Z-Move)

Alolan Raichu's very own Z-Move in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. With Aloraichium Z, Thunderbolt becomes a 175-power surf ride that never misses and paralyses the target.

ElectricVolt Tackle

For years only a Pichu or Pikachu could learn it and bring it along: a Light Ball Egg Move since Emerald and a Pikachu tutor move in Sun and Moon. Legends: Arceus finally lets Raichu learn it from the move tutor, and Legends: Z-A makes it wait until level 99.

WaterSurf

Fitting for a Pokémon whose Alolan form rides its own tail. For two decades a surfing Raichu meant evolving a Pikachu that had picked Surf up from an event or a Pokémon Stadium prize; since Sword and Shield every Raichu can learn it by TR or TM.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow3 level-up · 23 TM/HM

In Red and Blue, Raichu comes from touching a Pikachu with a Thunder Stone, and a few wild ones lurk deep in Cerulean Cave. Yellow is the odd one out: its only Pikachu is your partner, which flatly refuses the stone, so a Raichu has to be traded in. Evolving came at a price in this era. Raichu knows just three moves, all from the start (ThunderShock, Growl and Thunder Wave), and never learns another by levelling up, so Quick Attack and Agility have to be picked up as a Pikachu first (Yellow adds Tail Whip, Slam and Light Screen to that list). The TM case does the heavy lifting, with Thunderbolt, Thunder, Hyper Beam, Submission and Seismic Toss. Every Electric attack is special and every Normal attack physical, and moves keep their original spellings (ThunderShock, ThunderPunch, DoubleSlap). The transfer list shows Generation II moves a Raichu can carry back through the Time Capsule.

Gold, Silver and Crystal have no wild Raichu, so it is Thunder Stone time again. Its own list grows to four starting moves: ThunderShock, Tail Whip, Quick Attack and, best of all, Thunderbolt, while Growl and Thunder Wave now have to be learned as a Pikachu or Pichu. Pichu's debut gives Raichu a family to breed, with Egg Moves such as Encore, Present and Reversal and Pichu's own Charm and Sweet Kiss carried over by evolving. Crystal's Odd Egg Pichu brings Dizzy Punch, and Crystal's move tutor teaches Thunderbolt. New TMs add Zap Cannon, Iron Tail, DynamicPunch and ThunderPunch. Hidden Power's type, and so its category, depends on the Pokémon; Curse is ???-type.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (plus Pokémon XD tutor moves)4 level-up · 24 TM/HM · 8 egg · 19 tutor

Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen all make you evolve a Pikachu, while Colosseum and XD have no Raichu of their own; XD's move tutors will still teach one brought over from a Game Boy Advance game. The level-up list is unchanged. Charge and Wish join the Egg Moves, and in Emerald a Pichu hatched while a parent holds a Light Ball already knows Volt Tackle. Move tutors arrive in FireRed and LeafGreen, Emerald and XD (the games column shows which), and Thunder Wave, Body Slam and Double-Edge are now tutor moves. Physical or special still depends on a move's type, so Volt Tackle counts as special here. These games cannot receive Pokémon from Gold and Silver, so there is no transfer list.

All five games have you evolve a Pikachu, and Pal Park's Forest area can bring a Raichu over from a Generation III game. This is the first generation where each move has its own physical or special category, so Volt Tackle and ThunderPunch are finally physical. New TMs include Focus Blast, Charge Beam, Grass Knot and Giga Impact, and Fake Out, Tickle and ThunderPunch join the Egg Moves (Flail only in HeartGold and SoulSilver). Tutor columns: Diamond and Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver; Headbutt is a HeartGold and SoulSilver tutor only. Pikachu's new Feint and Discharge, and Pichu's Nasty Plot, can be learned before evolving.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire4 level-up · 36 TM/HM · 16 egg · 11 tutor

X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire all let you evolve a Pikachu again. Thunderbolt and Thunder drop to 90 and 110 power. TM94 is Rock Smash in X and Y but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Rock Smash becomes HM06, and Confide arrives as TM100. Disarming Voice joins the Egg Moves, and the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire tutors add Electroweb, Focus Punch and Shock Wave. Pikachu's Play Nice and Nuzzle (and Spark in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) can be learned before evolving.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon4 level-up · 30 TM/HM · 17 egg · 12 tutor · + Alolan Raichu

Alola changes everything: a Pikachu evolved here becomes Alolan Raichu, an Electric/Psychic surfer, so the classic Raichu can only be traded into Sun and Moon. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon add one loophole: a Pikachu evolved in Ultra Space becomes a Kantonian Raichu. Its own list is still the same four starting moves, and every tutor move is Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon only. Both forms share the Egg Moves (Electric Terrain is new) and the moves from Pichu and Pikachu, including Volt Tackle, which a Pikachu can now learn from a move tutor instead of needing a Light Ball Egg.

Alolan RaichuElectricPsychic

A Pikachu that evolves anywhere in Alola becomes Alolan Raichu. It starts with Psychic and Speed Swap and learns Psychic again the moment it evolves. Its TMs add Psyshock, Calm Mind, Psychic, Reflect and Safeguard, and the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon tutors add Ally Switch, Magic Coat, Magic Room, Recycle and Telekinesis. Egg Moves and moves from Pichu and Pikachu are the same as Raichu's. Older moves can only reach it on a Pikachu that was brought into Alola and evolved there. Holding Aloraichium Z, it turns Thunderbolt into its own Z-Move, Stoked Sparksurfer.

A Thunder Stone turns any Pikachu into Raichu here, apart from the Partner Pikachu, which never evolves. Raichu learns Thunder Punch the moment it evolves and starts with Encore and Fake Out alongside Pikachu's opening moves. There is no breeding and no ordinary move tutor, so the lists stop at level-up and TM moves, and Pikachu's Double Kick, Slam and Agility can be kept by evolving later.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl22 level-up · 83 TM/HM · 20 egg · 1 tutor · + Alolan Raichu

Sword and Shield have wild Raichu at Giant's Cap and in Max Raid Battles on the Motostoke Riverbank, and the Isle of Armor adds the Forest of Focus, the Soothing Wetlands and more raids; Alolan Raichu arrives by trade or as the Isle of Armor reward for finding at least 40 Alolan Diglett, and both forms appear in the Crown Tundra's Max Lair. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl go back to evolving a Pikachu. One level-up list serves both pairs: Raichu now gets Pikachu's whole kit at level 1, 21 moves from Play Nice and Nuzzle to Thunder, and learns Thunder Punch on evolving. TM and TR rows are tagged SwSh or BDSP, and Surf is open to every Raichu at last (TR04, or TM95 in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl). The Expansion Pass tutor teaches Rising Voltage. Older moves that no longer exist in Sword and Shield are flagged in the transfer list.

Alolan RaichuElectricPsychic

Sword and Shield only: Alolan Raichu cannot be obtained in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. It shares Raichu's starting moves but learns Psychic instead of Thunder Punch on evolving, and its TM and TR list adds Magic Room, Psychic, Psyshock, Future Sight, Calm Mind, Stored Power and Ally Switch (but not Eerie Impulse or Brutal Swing). The Expansion Pass tutor teaches it Expanding Force as well as Rising Voltage. Transfer rows marked as Pikachu-only are moves a Pikachu learned in an older game before evolving in Alola.

Raichu turns up in the Obsidian Fieldlands' massive mass outbreaks, as an Alpha in the Crimson Mirelands' Golden Lowlands and in space-time distortions in the Alabaster Icelands; Alolan Raichu is not in this game. Moves work differently here: each has a level at which it is learned and a higher level at which it is mastered, so it can be used in strong or agile style, and PP totals are lower. Raichu finally has a proper levelling curve, from Thunder Shock to Thunder at 47 with Iron Tail at 37, and the move tutor offers 14 moves including Volt Tackle and Play Rough. There are no TMs or breeding. Power is listed for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style.

Scarlet and Violet have wild Raichu in the West Province (Area Two), on the North Province's Socarrat Trail and in Area Zero, plus 4★ and 5★ Tera Raid Battles. Almost the whole list is learned at level 1, Iron Tail now included, except Thunderbolt, which oddly waits until level 5, and Thunder Punch still comes on evolving. Wish can be passed down only from Vaporeon or Leafeon, because a wild Terastallized Vaporeon at Casseroya Lake and a Terastallized Leafeon in South Province (Area Four) know it. Wild Terastallized Raichu in the North Paldean Sea know Focus Blast, Grass Knot and Surf. There are no move tutors.

Raichu in the anime

Debut EP014Electric Shock Showdown · Its appearances on screen, and 11 other trainers who raised one.

Raichu's anime career began with a beating. In Electric Shock Showdown, Lt. Surge's Raichu flattened Ash's Pikachu and set up one of the series' defining choices: Pikachu swatted away a Thunder Stone and won the rematch on speed and nerve alone. Ever since, Raichu has been the show's favourite mirror for Pikachu, the bigger, brawnier 'what if' that Ash's partner keeps refusing to become, from Sho's Hyper Beam-happy Raichu in Sinnoh to the Volt Tackling Raichu of Visquez, the Vermilion Gym's stand-in leader.

It is far more than a sparring partner, though. Gym Leaders Lt. Surge and Volkner both rely on one, Tierno took his all the way to the last eight of the Lumiose Conference, and Goh's Raichu became the Berry-sharing heart of Cerise Park after evolving to rescue her friends from Team Rocket. Alola added a floating, psychic twist with Nina's Pancake Race star and Hau's Manalo Conference battler, and Pokémon Horizons went one better, unveiling Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y in a single episode.

Other trainers’ Raichu

Lt. Surge's Raichu
Lt. Surge
Gym Leader (Vermilion Gym, Kanto)
Raichu

First seen: EP014Electric Shock Showdown
Now: With Lt. Surge, who has left the Vermilion Gym in Visquez's care so the two of them can train

Lt. Surge's Raichu is the anime's original Raichu and, for a while, the scariest thing in Vermilion City. Surge evolved it the moment he caught it, which gave it crushing power but left it without a single speed move. It flattened Ash's Pikachu in their first meeting, then lost the rematch when Agility left it swinging at thin air and its own electricity ran dry (EP014). It returns in flashbacks over the years, and in Pokémon Journeys Surge hands the Gym to Visquez so he and Raichu can go away and get even stronger (JN018).

Personality

Raichu mirrors its Trainer: brash, powerful and openly scornful of an unevolved Pikachu, it sends Pokémon after Pokémon to the Pokémon Center. Losing changes its tune, and by the end of the rematch it has come to respect the little Pokémon that outran it.

Goh's Raichu
Goh
main character (Pokémon Journeys)
Pikachu → Raichu

First seen: JN035Gotta Catch a What?!
Evolved: JN035Gotta Catch a What?!
Now: At Cerise Park in Kanto, where she helps feed Goh's other Pokémon

Goh's Raichu began as a female Pikachu in a mountain outbreak of Pikachu digging for Thunder Stones, and she caught Goh's eye by sharing Pecha Berries with Ash's Pikachu. Like her new friend she was happy as she was, so she handed her Thunder Stone to Goh for safekeeping, until Team Rocket's vacuum started swallowing the Pikachu. Calling for the stone as she was being sucked in, she evolved, burst the machine's nozzle and joined the other Raichu to free everyone (JN035). Since then she has been the kindly caretaker of Cerise Park, gathering Berries for an injured Suicune (JN053), calming a squabbling Greedent and Morpeko (JN070) and lending her spark to Molayne's Ampharos to signal a space probe (JN096).

Personality

Gentle, friendly and endlessly generous, she offers Berries to everyone she meets, keeps offering when they say no, and has a special soft spot for Ash's Pikachu. She was the first to welcome Goh's new Lilligant with a Berry (JN094), and she rounds up and motivates Goh's team when friends are in trouble (JN073).

Key battles

Volkner's Raichu
Volkner
Gym Leader (Sunyshore Gym, Sinnoh)
Pikachu → Raichu

First seen: DP165Flint Sparks the Fire!

Volkner's Raichu was his very first Pokémon: as a Pikachu, its childhood win over Flint's Chimchar started the two boys' lifelong rivalry, and it evolved before Volkner took charge of the Sunyshore Gym. It is plainly his closest partner, bounding up to hug Flint the moment he arrives (DP165). Volkner never sent it out against Ash; instead it starred in the Sunyshore Tower crisis, where Team Rocket's machinery soaked up its Thunder to power the stolen tower, before Raichu, Pikachu and Luxray gave Volkner the power to steer it back into place (DP166). It also pops up beside him in the end credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Tierno's Raichu
Tierno
rival (Pokémon the Series: XY)
Raichu

First seen: XY065Good Friends, Great Training!

Tierno caught his Raichu after the Pokémon Summer Camp with his Lumiose Gym challenge in mind, and showed her off to Ash in a Double Battle alongside Wartortle. Team Rocket's machine mistook her electricity for Pikachu's and carried her off, but once rescued she traded Charge Beam and Focus Blast with Pikachu until Ash's newly evolved Goodra knocked her out with Dragon Pulse (XY065). Her big moment came in the Lumiose Conference quarterfinal against Sawyer: she dived underground with Dig to take out Aegislash, was recalled when Slurpuff's Attract left her lovestruck, then returned for a last stand against Mega Sceptile, whose Lightning Rod swallowed her Thunder before Dragon Claw cut straight through her Focus Blast (XY126).

Hau's Raichu
Hau
rival (Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon)
Alolan Raichu

First seen: SM129Battle Royal 151!

Hau battles with an Alolan Raichu, which made its debut in the free-for-all Battle Royal of the Manalo Conference and helped him into the Top 16 (SM129). In the first round it out-sped Samson Oak's towering Alolan Exeggutor, slipped past Dragon Hammer with Quick Attack and toppled the giant with Focus Blast (SM130). Hau turned to Decidueye for his next match, against Ash (SM132).

Visquez's Raichu
Visquez
stand-in Gym Leader (Vermilion Gym, Pokémon Journeys)
Raichu

First seen: JN018Destination: Coronation!

With Lt. Surge away training, the Vermilion Gym is in the hands of Visquez, whose Raichu was trained by Surge himself. It finished off a challenger's Hypno with Volt Tackle, then gave Ash's Pikachu a tough World Coronation Series battle, trading Thunderbolts, catching and flinging Pikachu with its tail and blocking Iron Tail with Reflect. Ash switched to Gengar, whose Psychic stopped a Volt Tackle dead and slammed Raichu into the wall (JN018).

Sho's Raichu
Sho
Trainer (Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl)
Raichu

First seen: DP074Pika and Goliath!

Sho, a slang-slinging collector, already owned a Pichu and a Raichu and wanted Ash's Pikachu to complete his 'full-power Evolution set'. When Ash turned down every trade, Sho's Raichu shrugged off Thunderbolt, met Volt Tackle head on and finished Pikachu with a point-blank Hyper Beam, sending it to the Pokémon Center and reviving the old question of evolution. Pikachu stayed a Pikachu, and the next day a spinning Iron Tail dodged Hyper Beam and won the rematch (DP074).

Nina
Pancake Race champion (Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon)
Alolan Raichu

First seen: SM013Racing to a Big Event!

Alolan Raichu's anime debut belongs to Nina, a café waitress who won the previous Pokémon Pancake Race with her Raichu and is the face on this year's poster. Her floating, psychic-powered Raichu breezed through practice, snubbed Pikachu and kicked off a rivalry that ran all the way to the finish line, where the two tied for second behind Samson Oak's Komala. Nina, who races for fun rather than glory, cheered up her sulking partner with the promise of another go next year (SM013).

Kay
Showboat actress (Adventures in the Orange Islands)
Raichu

First seen: EP090Stage Fight!

Kay is a young actress on the Pokémon Showboat whose Raichu would not perform. When they first met, the excited Raichu nearly shocked her and she flung it into some crates, and it had sensed her fear ever since. With Team Rocket attacking the paddle steamer, Kay finally told Raichu she was no longer afraid of its sparks, and together they blasted the villains off the boat (EP090).

Katrina
Trainer (Indigo League)
Raichu (Raichie)

First seen: EP069Lights, Camera, Quack-tion

Katrina challenged Ash to a Pikachu-versus-Raichu battle at a campsite, but Team Rocket's net scooped up her Raichu, Raichie, before it could begin. Raichu broke free and floored the trio with Thunderbolt and Mega Kick while a film producer captured every second, and it went on to audition for Cleavon Schpielbunk's all-Pokémon film Pokémon in Love, though the lead went to Psyduck (EP069).

Raichu ×2: Chū-cha (Mega Raichu X) and Raio (Mega Raichu Y)

First seen: HZ138The Fake Rising Volt Tacklers Appear!? (translated Japanese title)

A family dressed as the Rising Volt Tacklers, touring in a camper van disguised as the Brave Olivine, were being credited online with rescues the real crew never made. The mother, dressed as Liko, battles with a female Raichu called Chū-cha; the father, dressed as Dot, with a male Raichu called Raio. When the real team caught up with them, the four-on-four battle exploded as both parents used Mega Rings to unleash Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, who knocked out Quaquaval and Sableye before Meowscarada and Skeledirge turned the tables (HZ138).

Ash & Raichu

Ash has never owned a Raichu, yet one shaped his bond with Pikachu almost from the start. Lt. Surge's Raichu flattened Pikachu at the Vermilion Gym, and when Nurse Joy offered a Thunder Stone, Pikachu knocked it away with its tail, determined to win as a Pikachu. In the rematch, Agility kept it out of reach, its tail grounded Raichu's window-shattering Thunderbolt, and once the drained Raichu went for Take Down, Quick Attack and a crack of Pikachu's tail won Ash the Thunder Badge (EP014). Ash kept that unused stone until Team Rocket stole it in Pika and Goliath! (DP074), the episode where Sho's Raichu raised the same question all over again, and his only time training a Raichu himself was with a shy loan Pokémon at the Pokémon Summer Academy (DP088).

Mega Raichu on screen

Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y made their anime debut together in Pokémon Horizons, Mega Evolved by the parents of the Fake Rising Volt Tacklers. There is no Gigantamax Raichu, and the same episode's Mega Study quiz turns that into a trick question.

  • HZ138The Fake Rising Volt Tacklers Appear!? (translated Japanese title)Chū-cha becomes Mega Raichu X and Raio becomes Mega Raichu Y; Raio's forked Thunder and Chū-cha's Wild Charge knock out Quaquaval and Sableye before Meowscarada and Skeledirge beat them both.

Anime trivia

  • Ash held on to the Thunder Stone that Pikachu refused in Electric Shock Showdown (EP014) for 523 episodes, until Team Rocket stole it in Pika and Goliath! (DP074), an episode that replays the whole Raichu-versus-Pikachu dilemma, complete with clips from the original.
  • Lt. Surge's Raichu lost because it grew up too fast: it evolved as soon as it was caught, so it never learned the speedy moves that might have let it keep up with Pikachu.
  • In the original Japanese version of EP014, Ash's Pokédex compares Raichu's shock to one that could knock out an Indian elephant; the English dub swapped the elephant for a Dragonite.
  • Pokémon Yellow tips its hat to the anime: Lt. Surge's Raichu there knows Mega Punch and Mega Kick, the same combination it used to batter Pikachu in EP014.
  • Goh's Raichu is the first female Raichu in the anime drawn with the species' female tail. Tierno's female Raichu originally had a male tail, which was corrected in the Japanese Hulu version.
  • Goh's Raichu was the first Pokémon belonging to a main character to evolve with an Evolution stone in 741 episodes, since Brock's Lombre became Ludicolo in Once in a Mawile (AG105).
  • Kay's tale of stage fright in Stage Fight! (EP090) was retold in the Pokémon Junior book Raichu Shows Off.
  • The Mega Study quiz in HZ138 asks which Raichu form has yet to be discovered: Alolan Raichu, Mega Raichu X or Gigantamax Raichu. The answer is Gigantamax Raichu.

“Raichu, a Mouse Pokémon of the Electric element. Raichu is the evolved form of Pikachu. It can shock with more than 100,000 volts, enough to render a Dragonite unconscious.”

Raichu in the movies

2 films, 1 Pikachu short and 1 special featuring Raichu.

Raichu has never headlined a film, but it has been turning up on cinema screens since day one. Several Raichu feel the world wobble in The Power of One, and Volkner's partner takes a bow in the closing credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions. Its best big-screen work came in the short shown before the very first film: in Pikachu's Vacation, a swaggering Raichu picks a fight with Pikachu, and their cheek-to-cheek race across the theme park is a gag that later Pichu, Pancham and Chespin would all pay homage to. On TV, a plucky wild Raichu takes on Team Rocket's Miracle Crystal in the special The Legend of Thunder!

Several wild Raichu

When the collector Lawrence III starts capturing the legendary birds and the weather goes haywire, several Raichu are among the Pokémon that sense something has gone badly wrong with the world. It's a fleeting cameo in a film that belongs to Lugia and the legendary birds.

Volkner's Raichu (closing credits)

Raichu gets a curtain call in the closing credits, which catch up with the Sinnoh Gym Leaders Ash battled, most of them with one of their Pokémon. Sunyshore's Volkner, Sinnoh's eighth and final Gym Leader, appears with his Raichu, the very first Pokémon he ever had.

Pikachu shorts

  • PK01Pikachu's Vacation (1998) · A rowdy Raichu and its friends Snubbull, Marill and Cubone
Raichu's meatiest film role is as the troublemaker of the Pokémon Theme Park. With Snubbull, Marill and Cubone it makes such a racket that baby Togepi wakes up, and when Pikachu asks the older Pokémon to set a better example, the sparks literally fly. The two electric mice lock cheeks in a crackling shoving match, then tear across the park, waking a napping Arbok, Weezing and Meowth and treading on Charizard's tail, until Charizard sends them flying and they end up squashed under a Snorlax. In the end the gang say sorry and pitch in, and the day finishes with everyone friends.

That cheek-to-cheek race became a classic: two racing Pichu copy it in the animation for the Japanese Diamond & Pearl ending Get Fired Up, Spiky-eared Pichu!, and Pancham and Chespin recreate it in the 2015 short Pikachu and the Pokémon Music Squad. The short premiered with Mewtwo Strikes Back.

TV specials

  • The Legend of Thunder! (2001)
This Johto TV special gives a wild Raichu a moment of real courage. Team Rocket's Attila and Hun are using the Miracle Crystal to draw in Electric-type Pokémon and snatch them with their mecha's claws, and a Raichu fires off an attack to stop them. The crystal turns its own power back on it and it is quickly beaten, one of many Electric types overwhelmed before Jimmy, Marina and Vincent step in to protect Raikou.

Raichu in the Pokémon TCG

92 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Raichu has been part of the game since day one. It was in Japan's very first Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reached English players as a Base Set holo in January 1999, where a stray prerelease print turned it into one of the most sought-after cards ever made. Since then it has been a dependable Stage 1 Lightning Pokémon with a big Thunderbolt-style finisher, and it has tried on almost every gimmick the game has had: Dark Raichu (the first Secret card), Lt. Surge's and Jasmine's Raichu, Shining Raichu, two Raichu ex, a Metal-type δ Species Raichu, Raichu LV.X, Volkner's Raichu GL, a Prime, a BREAK, two Raichu-GX and a Raichu V. Alolan Raichu joined in 2017 and teamed up with its Kanto cousin on the Raichu & Alolan Raichu-GX TAG TEAM in 2019. Every Alolan Raichu card so far is Lightning-type, so its Psychic side shows up in attacks such as Psychic. There's still no Raichu VMAX, VSTAR or Scarlet & Violet-style ex in the main game, but Pokémon TCG Pocket has added both Raichu ex and Alolan Raichu ex.

The art has travelled just as far. Ken Sugimori's clean official drawings and Mitsuhiro Arita's painterly Fossil and Team Rocket cards set the tone. The e-Card era brought Atsuko Nishida and Yuka Morii, and the EX and Diamond & Pearl years added a parade of new hands, from Ryo Ueda's Raichu ex and Raichu LV.X to Kagemaru Himeno's Stormfront holo. From BREAK onwards, 5ban Graphics gave Raichu a glossy CGI look on its biggest cards, while recent sets let artists paint whole scenes: Arita's Evolving Skies Raichu shares its world with a Sewaddle and a Rotom, Toshinao Aoki drew the Paldea Evolved Illustration Rare, and Sanosuke Sakuma redrew the 151 card in Shiny colours. Pokémon TCG Pocket mixes the two eras, bringing back art from Cosmic Eclipse, Lost Origin, Silver Tempest, Crimson Invasion and POP Series 9 alongside new pieces, such as Yoshimi Miyoshi's Alolan Raichu ex sharing the spotlight with Alolan Exeggutor.

Cards to know

  • Base Set 14/102 — Ken Sugimori's original holo, and the reason for the hobby's most famous error: a few copies with a Prerelease stamp that Wizards of the Coast denied for years. Collectors call it the Holy Grail.
  • Team Rocket 83/82 (Dark Raichu) — The TCG's very first Secret card, numbered past the end of the set. Wizards of the Coast made it themselves, and it reached English players before Japan.
  • Gym Heroes 28/132 (Lt. Surge's Raichu) — The Vermilion City Gym Leader's partner, the Raichu that gave Ash's Pikachu so much trouble, with a 100-damage Thunderbolt.
  • Neo Destiny 111/105 (Shining Raichu) — Raichu in its Shiny colours. It plays as a Basic and, oddly, needs Water Energy to fire off Thundersquall.
  • Crimson Invasion 31/111 (Alolan Raichu) — Alolan Raichu's first Ability card: Surge Surfer, straight from the games, lets it retreat for free whenever a Stadium is in play.
  • BW78 / BW-P 152 — The promo that never was. Planned for English blister packs and briefly shown on Pokémon.com in 2014, it vanished the same day and only ever existed in Japan and online.

Raichu in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

On paper, Raichu has led a surprisingly busy life. Lt. Surge's Raichu is a Pokémon Adventures regular, bulldozing into the Masked Man's hideout and powering a submarine laser at the Lake of Rage, while Pokémon Zensho's Satoshi does what Ash never would and lets his Pikachu evolve for good, and in Pocket Monsters Red's Pikachu tries life as a Raichu for all of one chapter. The most touching story belongs to Magical Pokémon Journey, where a ghostly Raichu waits 150 years to learn it was never abandoned. On the bookshelf, Kay's stage-shy Raichu headlines the Pokémon Junior reader Raichu Shows Off, and Lt. Surge's Raichu fights Pikachu all over again in several retellings of Electric Shock Showdown. Off the page it is rapped in the Pokérap's Wednesday verse, dodged by Pikachu in the dub's opening titles and even, in its Alolan form, flown around Japan in the livery of a passenger jet.

Manga

Pokémon Pocket MonstersRed (his Pikachu, briefly); Blue · PM023 'Clefairy Evolves… At Last?!' / volume 4Kosaku Anakubo's slapstick comedy gives Raichu a very short career: in 'Clefairy Evolves… At Last?!', Red's Pikachu evolves into a Raichu, and it is back to being a Pikachu before the chapter is over. Red's rival Blue has a Raichu of his own when the two clash in 'The Pokémon Banana League (Part 1)' (PM054, volume 8).
Pokémon AdventuresLt. Surge · PS029 'Go for the Golbat' / volume 3Lt. Surge's Raichu first turns up when Red runs into the Vermilion Gym Leader at Silph Co., in a fight where Pika's electricity fizzles out against Surge's insulated gear. It really comes into its own in the Gold, Silver & Crystal chapters. In 'Raising Raichu' (PS139, volume 11) it smashes through the floor of a Mahogany Town shop into the Masked Man's secret factory and holds off his Houndour, drawing electricity from the air, until a pack of wild Houndour freeze Surge and Raichu with their howls and Surge escapes with the help of some self-destructing Electrode. Afterwards Surge uses Raichu's electricity to power his submarine's laser at the Lake of Rage, and it stands at his side when the Kanto and Johto Gym Leaders gather (PS154).
Pokémon Adventures (Diamond & Pearl)Volkner · PS404 'Encountering Elekid' / volume 36Sunyshore's Gym Leader brings his Raichu to the Diamond & Pearl chapters. It debuts in the chapter that introduces Volkner, who has rerouted the city's electricity to run his elaborate gadgets, and it is part of the team he takes into battle against Platinum.
Pokémon AdventuresVarious (Battle Frontier rental, Pokéathlon competitor and others) · PS179 'The Last Battle XIII' / volume 14Raichu pops up all over the series in smaller roles: among the Pokémon thrown into the final battle in Ilex Forest (PS179), at the Battle Pike (PS309), as a Battle Tower rental that the mysterious Guile Hideout steals ('The Final Battle VII', PS334), and with a competitor at a Pokéathlon ('Out-Odding Oddish', PS442).
Pocket Monsters Film ComicLt. Surge · volume 4 ('Electric Shock Showdown! Vermilion Gym') · 1997Shogakukan's comic version of the anime retells Electric Shock Showdown in its fourth volume, published on 25 December 1997, so Lt. Surge's Raichu gets to relive both of its battles with Pikachu on paper. The same volume covers the Squirtle Squad, Bill's lighthouse and the St. Anne.
Magical Pokémon JourneySandy · PPPB14 'Raichu's Best Friend' (bonus chapter)Yumi Tsukirino's gentle manga gives Raichu its most moving story. Sandy and her Raichu are ghosts: around 150 years ago, after one shocking incident too many, Sandy's parents left Raichu in a box by the sea, and Sandy promised to come back for it, but both were lost in a tidal wave before they could meet again. Believing it had been abandoned, Raichu grew bitter and quick to shock, until Pikachu and friends helped it learn the truth and the pair could finally move on together. Much later they are reborn as a little girl and a Pichu, and become friends all over again. In English the story first appeared in VIZ's monthly comic issue Raichu's Best Friend (February 2002).
Pokémon ZenshoSatoshi · PZ10 (as Pikachu: PZ02)Satoshi finds a shy Pikachu in Viridian Forest, and before he takes on the Elite Four it chooses to evolve with a Thunder Stone. That makes him the only one of Red's manga counterparts to keep his Pikachu and turn it into a Raichu for good, the very road Ash's Pikachu refused to take. At the Indigo Plateau the new Raichu knocks out Lorelei's Cloyster.
Pokémon Journeys (manga)Visquez; Lt. Surge · JNM09 'Destination: Coronation!' / volume 2Visquez's Raichu debuts in the manga's version of Destination: Coronation!, the chapter in which Ash enters the World Coronation Series, and Lt. Surge's Raichu appears in an imagined scene. Visquez's Raichu is back in a flashback in the next chapter, 'Toughing It Out!' (JNM10).

Raichu trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Raichu such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Raichu's name is a little thunderclap of a word: 雷 rai means 'thunder' in Japanese, and chū comes from chūchū, the Japanese sound of a mouse's squeak – the same squeak that ends Pikachu's name. English kept the Japanese name exactly, and so do French, German, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese, which makes Raichu one of the few Pokémon that answers to the same name almost everywhere. Chinese spells it 雷丘 Léiqiū, putting the 'thunder' character right at the front.

Design origins

Raichu was designed by Atsuko Nishida, the artist behind Pikachu, and its long legs and long, thin tail recall a jerboa or kangaroo rat. It very nearly wasn't the end of the line: early on it had an evolution of its own, Gorochu, with two horns and fangs. Ken Sugimori has said there was nothing wrong with the design – the team simply felt the game was better balanced without it, and limited space meant some planned three-stage families were cut short. When Alola came along, Sugimori asked Nishida to design the new form because she had drawn the original; the idea for Alolan Raichu came from Masafumi Nukita, who also wrote its Pokédex entries. Nishida felt Raichu was cuter than people realise and leaned into that with a bread motif – which may explain its sweet-smelling cheeks and paws that look like cream puffs – while the pancake lore was added later. Its surfing nods to Hawaii, the birthplace of the sport and the model for Alola, and to the famous surfing Pikachu – its Psychic type may even owe something to Puka, a psychic, blue-eyed surfing Pikachu from the anime. The two Megas are shaped like their letters and swap features with Pikachu: Mega Raichu X has Raichu's body with Pikachu's colours and tails, Mega Raichu Y the reverse, and Mega Y's lightning-bolt horns may owe something to the jackalope – or to the long-lost Gorochu.

Did you know?

  1. The Base Set Raichu has a legendary cousin: a handful of 'Prerelease' Raichu cards – thought to be about eight to ten – that Wizards of the Coast denied existed for years until a staff member posted a photo in 2006. Collectors call it the Holy Grail of Pokémon cards.
  2. Raichu is the only electric rodent with a Mega Evolution or a regional form – and, with Slowbro, the only Pokémon to have both.
  3. It was the first Pokémon since X & Y to be given two Mega Evolutions, and its Megas were the first ones shown in trailers for the Mega Dimension expansion.
  4. The Raichu family is the only evolutionary line with Mega Evolution, its own exclusive Z-Moves and a Gigantamax form (Gigantamax Pikachu).
  5. Raichu is #026 in both the National Pokédex and the Alola Pokédex of Sun & Moon.
  6. Its Pokémon Stadium entry claims 10,000 volts rather than the usual 100,000 – most likely a slip in translating the way Japanese counts large numbers.
  7. FireRed and Sun say a Raichu shock can knock out an Indian elephant; Legends: Arceus swaps the elephant for Copperajah, the only Pokédex entry in that game to mention a Pokémon you can't find in Hisui.
  8. In Pokémon Yellow your partner Pikachu refuses to evolve, just like Ash's Pikachu in the anime, so the only way to get a Raichu is to trade one over from Red or Blue.
  9. In Red and Blue, a scientist on Cinnabar Island trades you a Raichu and later says it has evolved – impossible for Raichu, and a leftover from the Japanese Blue version's different trade.
  10. Lt. Surge's Yellow version Raichu knows Mega Punch and Mega Kick, the same moves his anime Raichu used to beat Pikachu.
  11. Raichu turns up on more rivals' teams than any other Pokémon – five different rivals have used one.
  12. Long before Alolan Raichu existed, Raichu was already a surfer: in the Stadium games, Colosseum, XD and Battle Revolution it rides its own tail when it uses Surf.
  13. Alolan Raichu is the only Pokémon with its Electric/Psychic type combination, the only one with the Ability Surge Surfer and the only one that can use the Z-Move Stoked Sparksurfer.
  14. Raichu, Pikachu and Pichu are the only Pokémon that can learn Volt Tackle.
  15. Mega Raichu X's Shiny form looks like an ordinary Raichu, while Mega Raichu Y's Shiny looks like Pikachu.
  16. In Legends: Z-A it is the only Pokémon whose Alolan form can be obtained without the Mega Dimension DLC.
  17. When Pokémon Champions launched, Raichu was the only Mega-capable Pokémon whose Megas were missing despite appearing in promotional material; they arrived in version 1.1.0 on 17 June 2026.
  18. Dark Raichu from the Team Rocket expansion was the first Pokémon card printed as a secret card, numbered 83 in an 82-card set.
