Evolving Skies booster pack

Sword & Shield—Evolving Skies soared into the Pokémon TCG on 27 August 2021 as the seventh main expansion of the Sword & Shield era — and it became one of the most beloved and valuable sets of the modern age. It brought Dragon-type Pokémon back to the game for the first time in the era, headlined by a spectacular Rayquaza VMAX, and paired them with the full family of Eeveelution V and VMAX cards.

It is the Eeveelutions — and their breathtaking alternate arts — that cemented Evolving Skies as a collector’s holy grail. Umbreon, Sylveon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon and Espeon all appear as V and VMAX, many with full-scene alternate-art illustrations that rank among the most coveted cards ever printed.

The undisputed crown jewel is the alternate-art Umbreon VMAX (215/203) — affectionately known as “Moonbreon” — which has become one of the single most expensive cards of the last several generations, regularly commanding four-figure sums in top grades. With 237 cards in total (203 in the main set plus 34 secret rares), Evolving Skies is a set defined by beauty, chase and staying power.

Dynamic Power on the Horizon! Feel the power of the shifting winds, and brace for an epic storm as mighty Dragon-type Pokémon make their triumphant return!

Sword & Shield—Evolving Skies was released worldwide on 27 August 2021. Despite an initially large print run, its extraordinary popularity — driven by the Eeveelution alternate arts — has kept sealed product in high demand and pushed prices far above most Sword & Shield sets.

English sealed products included four different booster pack artworks (Umbreon, Rayquaza, Sylveon and Gigantamax Duraludon), the 36-pack booster box, two Elite Trainer Box artwork variants splitting the eight Eeveelutions, and the Evolving Skies Build & Battle Box. Umbreon VMAX and Rayquaza VMAX League Battle Decks followed later.

Evolving Skies is now one of the most sought-after sealed products of the entire era, with the alternate-art Umbreon VMAX — “Moonbreon” — standing as its towering chase card.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

Evolving Skies is an English compilation drawn from three Japanese sets — Blue Sky Stream (S7R) and Skyscraping Perfection (S7D), both released 9 July 2021, plus the Eeveelution cards from the earlier Eevee Heroes (S6a) subset. Blue Sky Stream is built around Rayquaza VMAX, while Skyscraping Perfection centres on Duraludon VMAX.

As with the whole era, the cards were renumbered and reorganised for the West, and the English set adds a deep run of secret rares (204–237) — the rainbow, gold and alternate-art chase cards, including the fabled Moonbreon, that sit above the standard 203-card numbering.

Here are the main Japanese products this expansion draws from — the Blue Sky Stream (S7R) and Skyscraping Perfection (S7D) booster packs and boxes:

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Evolving Skies is home to some of the most valuable cards of the entire modern era, led by a card that needs no introduction among collectors.

Umbreon VMAX

Umbreon VMAX (alternate art) — #215/203

“Moonbreon.” The alternate-art Umbreon VMAX is the most famous — and most expensive — card of the Sword & Shield era, and one of the priciest cards printed in several generations. Its moonlit illustration has made it a genuine grail, regularly selling for four figures in high grades and defining the value of the entire set.

Rayquaza VMAX

Rayquaza VMAX (alternate art) — #218/203

The alternate-art Rayquaza VMAX is the set’s second great chase card — a sweeping full-scene illustration of the Sky High Pokémon that is both a competitive powerhouse and a top-tier collector’s piece.

Umbreon V

Umbreon V (alternate art) — #189/203

The alternate-art Umbreon V is a chase card in its own right, with a dramatic moonlit scene that collectors covet almost as much as its VMAX counterpart.

Sylveon VMAX

Sylveon VMAX (alternate art) — #212/203

Sylveon VMAX’s alternate art is one of the most beautiful of the Eeveelution set — a soft, ribbon-filled scene that ranks among the most popular alt arts of the era.

Leafeon VMAX

Leafeon VMAX (alternate art) — #205/203

Leafeon VMAX’s alternate art rounds out the set’s celebrated Eeveelution illustrations, prized for its lush, sunlit forest scene.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Beyond the art, Evolving Skies reshaped the competitive game — its Dragon VMAX and Eeveelution attackers dominated the format for the rest of the year.

Rayquaza VMAX

Rayquaza VMAX — #111/203

Rayquaza VMAX was the format-defining deck of its era — its Azure Pulse ability refilled your hand while Max Burst hit for massive damage using both Fire and Lightning Energy, making it one of the best decks of the entire Sword & Shield run.

Sylveon VMAX

Sylveon VMAX — #75/203

Sylveon VMAX’s Precious Touch and Max Harmony gave control decks a resilient, self-healing attacker that was a mainstay of the competitive scene.

Umbreon VMAX

Umbreon VMAX — #95/203

Umbreon VMAX’s Dark Signal ability could drag an opponent’s Benched Pokémon into the Active Spot, enabling disruptive strategies alongside strong single-prize attackers.

Espeon VMAX

Espeon VMAX — #65/203

Espeon VMAX brought a high-damage Psychic option with useful disruption, seeing play across a range of decks during the Evolving Skies era.
