XY Xerneas booster packXY—commonly called the XY Base Set—launched the sixth generation of the Pokémon Trading Card Game in English on February 5, 2014. Built from Japan’s twin Collection X (コレクションX) and Collection Y (コレクションY) sets released on December 13, 2013, this 146-card expansion was a genuine reset: a redesigned card frame, the first wave of Kalos Pokémon, and two era-defining new mechanics that changed how the game was played and built.

Its headline was Mega Evolution, arriving as M Pokémon-EX, alongside the debut of the brand-new Fairy type. Framed around the Xerneas-versus-Yveltal rivalry of the X & Y video games, XY set the template for a series that would run for three years — and gave collectors a set of striking Full Art legendaries to chase from the very first pack.

From the official set description:

A new generation of Pokémon takes the stage! Discover Mega Evolution, meet the mysterious Fairy type, and choose your champion — the radiant Xerneas or the shadowy Yveltal. The Pokémon TCG: XY Series begins here, in the Kalos region!

Mega Evolution Arrives

XY Base Set brought the video games’ headline Generation VI mechanic into the TCG as M Pokémon-EX — the biggest rules addition since Pokémon-EX themselves. Just two Megas appear here: M Venusaur-EX (2/146) and M Blastoise-EX (30/146), both boasting enormous HP and damage. But there was a catch: Mega Evolving ends your turn on the spot, with no Mega Stone required and — in this set — no way around the drawback. (The Spirit Link Tools that later softened that downside wouldn’t arrive until the Furious Fists era.) It was a genuine risk-reward gamble that reshaped deck-building.

The Fairy-Type Debut

For the first time ever, the TCG gained an entirely new Energy type. Fairy arrived with its own basic Fairy Energy card (140/146) and a starter cast — Spritzee and Aromatisse, Swirlix and Slurpuff, and the legendary Xerneas line (96 and 97). Fairy’s type matchups, strong into Dragon and Dark, rewired the game’s color wheel and laid the groundwork for the Fairy decks that would dominate later in the series. (One myth to bust: Sylveon, the ‘face’ Fairy Eeveelution, is not in this set — it debuted later in Furious Fists.)

A New Era, A New Look

This is the ground floor of the XY series: a redesigned card frame, updated EX styling, a new set symbol, and the first main-set wave of Kalos Pokémon. The game even lowered its recommended age from 10+ to 6+ starting here. Part of the story is its dual origin — the English set was stitched together and expanded from two separate Japanese releases, Collection X and Collection Y, mirroring the two versions of the video games it was named after.

Xerneas vs. Yveltal — the Legendary Clash

The set’s marquee legendaries mirror the X and Y games themselves: the Fairy-type Xerneas-EX (97/146, Full Art 146/146) against the Dark-type Yveltal-EX (79/146, Full Art 144/146). Xerneas became the collector’s darling — the ‘146/146’ Full Art is the set’s flagship pull — while Yveltal became the competitive titan of the 2014 season. The same rivalry, playing out on two very different battlefields.

Print Versions

XY Base Set shipped in booster packs with four wrapper arts — Xerneas, Yveltal, Venusaur and Blastoise — plus two theme decks, Resilient Life (Xerneas/Fairy) and Destruction Rush (Yveltal/Dark), and a pair of Elite Trainer Boxes fronted by the two cover legendaries.

The set’s Japanese origins are worth a look too: XY was assembled from the dual Collection X and Collection Y sets, sold in these matching version boxes — the same X-versus-Y split as the video games.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

XY Base Set’s chase is a run of six borderless Full Art Pokémon-EX (#141–146), led by the Kanto starters and the flagship Xerneas. A note on values: PSA 10 populations for these 2014 Full Arts are tiny, so graded prices swing on a handful of sales — the raw ranges below are the steadier guide, and headline graded figures should be read as estimates.

Blastoise-EX

Blastoise-EX (Full Art) — #142/146

By raw price, frequently the set’s most valuable card — a textured Full Art of the Kanto starter with strong nostalgia demand. Expect roughly $70–$160 for a clean raw copy. Graded gem-mint examples are extremely thin (roughly one recorded sale a year), so headline PSA 10 figures are volatile outliers; a PSA 9 in the mid-hundreds is the more grounded benchmark.

Venusaur-EX

Venusaur-EX (Full Art) — #141/146

The companion starter Full Art and a close second in value, with the same nostalgia pull. Raw near-mint copies generally run $70–$100, with PSA 10 examples in the low thousands on a very thin graded population — treat graded prices as estimates rather than fixed quotes.

Xerneas-EX

Xerneas-EX (Full Art) — #146/146

The set’s iconic ‘last card’ and its true flagship chase — the Fairy legendary that fronts the whole XY era. Raw copies typically sell for $50–$105, with PSA 10 examples around $3,000+ (again, on a handful of sales a year).

Skarmory-EX

Skarmory-EX (Full Art) — #145/146

A sleeper Full Art with a small graded population, so gem-mint copies punch above their modest raw price. Around $15–$45 raw, with PSA 10 examples reaching roughly $900–$1,000.

M Blastoise-EX

M Blastoise-EX — #30/146

The most valuable of the two Mega cards (note: the Megas are standard bordered Mega-EX, not Full Arts). Its big-HP artwork keeps demand steady at about $20–$32 raw and roughly $300+ in PSA 10.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

XY Base Set seeded two of the 2014 season’s defining decks — Yveltal and Fairy — and supplied Trainer staples that lasted the whole era.

Yveltal-EX

Yveltal-EX (#79/146) — The Signature Attacker

The defining attacker of the 2014 season. Evil Ball scaled its damage with the total Energy in play, letting it hit huge numbers cheaply for a single Dark Energy, while Y Cyclone moved Energy as it attacked. It anchored the dominant Yveltal decks that ran the format all year.

Yveltal

Yveltal (#78/146) — Fright Night

The single-Prize ‘baby Yveltal’ and one of the most impactful non-EX cards of the format. Its Fright Night Ability shut off the effects of all Pokémon Tools in play — a hard counter to Muscle Band-boosted attackers — while it still hit hard with Evil Ball of its own.

Professor Sycamore

Professor Sycamore (#122/146) — The Draw Engine

The premier draw Supporter of the era — discard your hand and draw seven — and a near-universal 4-of. A reprint of Professor Juniper, it defined deck consistency for essentially every archetype in the format.

Muscle Band

Muscle Band (#121/146) — +20 Everywhere

A Pokémon Tool granting +20 damage to attacks against the opponent’s Active Pokémon. Cheap, universal and a staple for the entire XY era, it pushed EX attackers over crucial knockout thresholds — until an opposing Yveltal #78 turned it off.

Xerneas-EX

Xerneas-EX (#97/146) + the Fairy Engine

The seed of the Fairy archetype. Non-EX Xerneas (#96) used Geomancy to load Fairy Energy from the deck, Aromatisse (#93) shuttled that Energy freely with Fairy Transfer, and Xerneas-EX (#97) did the attacking. The engine grew into a top-tier deck as the XY series expanded.

Trivia

  • Only two Megas — and neither is Kangaskhan. XY Base Set contains exactly two Mega Pokémon-EX: M Venusaur-EX (2/146) and M Blastoise-EX (30/146). The famous M Kangaskhan-EX belongs to the next set, XY—Flashfire — it’s one of the most common miscredits.
  • Mega Evolving ends your turn. In this set there was no way around it: Mega Evolving your Pokémon immediately ended your turn, with no Mega Stone required. The Spirit Link Tools that later removed that drawback didn’t exist yet.
  • Fairy arrives, but Sylveon doesn’t. The Fairy type debuts here with its own Energy card and the Xerneas line — but Sylveon, the definitive Fairy Eeveelution, wouldn’t appear until XY—Furious Fists (72/111).
  • No secret rares, no Full Art Supporters. The set caps cleanly at 146/146 — there are no cards numbered above the total. The six Full Art EX (#141–146) are the top pulls, and unlike later XY sets, XY Base has zero Full Art Supporter cards.
  • Staples that aren’t here. Lysandre (XY—Flashfire), Battle Compressor and VS Seeker (both XY—Phantom Forces) are all XY-era icons often miscredited to this set — but Muscle Band (121) and Professor Sycamore (122) genuinely are in XY Base.
