Furious Fists Mega Lucario booster packXY—Furious Fists stepped into the ring on August 13, 2014 as the third set of the XY series, built around a bold Fighting-type theme — ‘Become King of the Ring!’ Adapted from Japan’s Rising Fist (ライジングフィスト, June 14, 2014) and expanded to 113 cards, it delivered two new Megas — M Heracross-EX and M Lucario-EX — a deep Fighting-support toolbox, and, most consequentially, the debut of Seismitoad-EX.

That one card came to define an era. Its Quaking Punch attack locked opponents out of their Item cards for just two Colorless Energy — throttling a format that runs on Items — and Furious Fists is remembered as much for the control decks it unleashed as for its Fighting champions. Behind Seismitoad, the tutor Supporter Korrina, Strong Energy and the Fighting Stadium quietly rebuilt the Fighting archetype into a tier-one force.

From the official set description:

Become King of the Ring! Unleash a barrage of fighting power as Mega Lucario and Mega Heracross storm the Pokémon TCG, backed by a whole roster of hard-hitting Fighting types. Train with Korrina, stand your ground, and strike first — XY—Furious Fists brings the fight!

The Toad That Broke the Format

Furious Fists’ true legacy is Seismitoad-EX (#20) and its Quaking Punch attack. Because the modern game runs on Item cards — VS Seeker, Ultra Ball, Trainers’ Mail, Muscle Band — a repeatable item-lock for just two Colorless Energy throttled the entire format. Pairings like Seismitoad/Slurpuff (guaranteed hand advantage under your own lock), Seismitoad/Garbodor (Ability-lock stacked on top of the Item-lock) and Seismitoad/Crobat (Bench damage to finish knockouts) carried the deck to the top of 2014–2016 events. It remains a poster child for control strategy in Pokémon — and one of the most oppressive decks in the game’s history.

A Fighting-Type Renaissance

Beyond one card, the set was purpose-built to make Fighting decks tier-one. Strong Energy (#104) added a flat +20 damage, the Fighting Stadium (#90) punished opposing Pokémon-EX with another +20, and Korrina (#95) glued it all together as a tutor for a Fighting Pokémon and an Item at once. Attackers like Lucario-EX (#54) and Hawlucha-EX (#64) benefited immediately, and the arithmetic of Strong Energy + Muscle Band + Fighting Stadium became the backbone of ‘Fighting Box’ decks for years.

Mega Power Enters the Ring

The set debuted two new Mega Evolutions — M Heracross-EX (#5, gold secret #112) and M Lucario-EX (#55, gold secret #113) — the latter especially resonant as Gym Leader Korrina’s signature Pokémon. Collectors love them, but competitively they were held back: there were still no Spirit Link Tools in this set, so Mega Evolving always ended your turn — a real tempo cost that wouldn’t be solved until Phantom Forces introduced Spirit Links a few months later. Note, too, that the two Megas have no Full Art printing here — their only premium versions are those gold secret rares.

Korrina’s Toolbox

Furious Fists doubled as a Trainer-engine expansion. Korrina (#95) anchored it, supported by Fossil Researcher (#92), Battle Reporter (#88), the Kalos fossils Jaw Fossil (#94) and Sail Fossil (#98), plus utility like Tool Retriever (#101), Training Center (#102) and the survival Tool Focus Sash (#91). It’s a set that rewarded deckbuilders as much as attackers — the commons and uncommons doing quiet, heavy lifting for the whole format.

Print Versions

XY Furious Fists shipped in booster packs with four wrapper arts — Mega Lucario, Mega Heracross, Hawlucha and Tyrantrum — plus two theme decks, Dark Hammer (Darkness/Fighting) and Enchanted Echo (Fairy/Water). The English set was built from the Japanese expansion Rising Fist (ライジングフィスト), released June 14, 2014.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Furious Fists’ chase is topped by its Full Art EXs and two gold secret Megas. A note on values: PSA 10 populations for these 2014 cards are thin, so graded prices swing on a handful of sales — read the raw ranges as the steadier guide and the graded figures as estimates.

Lucario-EX

Lucario-EX (Full Art) — #107/111

By graded value, the top card in the set — a textured Full Art of the fan-favourite Fighting-type. Raw near-mint copies run roughly $50–$70, with gem-mint PSA 10 examples around $2,500–$3,000 on very few sales a year.

M Lucario-EX

M Lucario-EX (Secret Rare) — #113/111

One of only two secret rares in the set, and a top chase — the gold-bordered Mega Lucario, Gym Leader Korrina’s signature Pokémon. Expect about $45–$55 raw and roughly $2,000–$2,500 in PSA 10.

Dragonite-EX

Dragonite-EX (Full Art) — #108/111

The odd one out — a Dragon-type Full Art in an otherwise all-Fighting set — and one of the highest raw-value cards in the release at around $50–$55, with PSA 10 examples near $1,100–$1,300.

M Heracross-EX

M Heracross-EX (Secret Rare) — #112/111

The set’s other gold secret, completing the pair alongside M Lucario. More affordable raw at about $20–$30, but with a thin graded population that pushes PSA 10 examples to roughly $1,400–$1,500.

Korrina

Korrina (Full Art) — #111/111

A beloved Full Art Supporter — but a cautionary tale for value citations. It sells raw for only about $18–$30, yet PSA 10 comps can appear near $3,000+ on roughly one sale a year. Almost nobody graded a $20 Supporter, so that headline figure is statistically thin — enjoy the art, but don’t treat the graded price as a reliable market value.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Furious Fists left a huge competitive footprint — the item-locking Seismitoad-EX and a Fighting toolbox that stayed relevant for years.

Seismitoad-EX

Seismitoad-EX (#20/111) — Quaking Punch

The most format-defining card of the era. A Water-type with 180 HP, its Quaking Punch attack costs just two Colorless Energy, deals 30, and locks the opponent out of Item cards on their next turn. Because the whole game runs on Items, that cheap, repeatable lock warped 2014–2016 — headlining Seismitoad/Slurpuff, Seismitoad/Garbodor and Seismitoad/Crobat, some of the most oppressive control decks ever built.

Korrina

Korrina (#95/111) — The Fighting Tutor

Search your deck for a Fighting Pokémon and an Item card, both to hand. Korrina was the premier consistency engine of the era, turning Fighting decks into tutor machines that could grab an attacker plus Muscle Band, a fossil, or whatever the situation demanded. A near-automatic include in every Fighting build.

Strong Energy

Strong Energy (#104/111) — +20 for Fighting

A Special Energy that provides Fighting Energy and adds +20 damage to the attacks of the Fighting Pokémon it’s attached to. A near-automatic 4-of in every Fighting deck; stacked with Muscle Band and the Fighting Stadium, it let Fighting attackers reach the numbers to one-shot opposing EXs.

Fighting Stadium

Fighting Stadium (#90/111) — Punish the EXs

A Stadium that gives every Fighting Pokémon’s attacks +20 damage against the opponent’s Active Pokémon-EX. A staple of Fighting-Box and Landorus/Lucario decks — both a damage boost and a way to overwrite an opponent’s Stadium.

Lucario-EX

Lucario-EX (#54/111) — The Fighting Anchor

A cheap, hard-hitting Fighting Basic-EX that anchored dedicated Fighting decks. Leaning on Strong Energy, Muscle Band, the Fighting Stadium and Korrina, it punched well above its Energy cost — a workhorse attacker for the archetype the set was built to empower.

Trivia

  • Seismitoad-EX is a Water-type, not Fighting. Despite headlining an all-Fighting set, card #20 is a Water Pokémon (Grass Weakness). Quaking Punch’s mere two-Colorless cost — not a Fighting cost — is exactly why it splashed into nearly every archetype of the era.
  • Spirit Links did not debut here. A common misconception. The Mega-support Spirit Link Tools first appeared in the next set, Phantom Forces (XY4). The special energies people actually remember from Furious Fists are Herbal Energy (#103) and Strong Energy (#104).
  • The two Megas have no Full Art — only gold secrets. M Heracross-EX (#112) and M Lucario-EX (#113) are the set’s only two secret rares, and there is no Full Art printing of either Mega. The Full Art EX slots (#105–108) belong to the non-Mega Heracross, Seismitoad, Lucario and Dragonite.
  • Dragonite-EX is the odd one out. A Dragon-type EX (#74, Full Art #108) dropped into an otherwise 100%-Fighting-themed set — and its Full Art is one of the highest raw-value cards in the release, an outlier from the ring-fighting motif.
  • Beware PSA 10 ‘prices’ on cheap cards. Korrina Full Art (#111) trades raw for about $20 yet shows PSA 10 comps near $3,000 — a mirage created by an almost nonexistent graded population. It’s a textbook example of why single-sale graded comps shouldn’t be quoted as market value.
