EX Emerald is the ninth expansion of the EX Series, released on May 9th, 2005 and tied to Pokémon Emerald, the third and definitive Hoenn game. This 107-card set gathers up the region’s biggest legends — Rayquaza, Groudon and Kyogre headline the booster art — under the fittingly grand tagline “The battles that legends are made of!”
The card pool leans on Hoenn’s heavy hitters. Ten Pokémon-ex run through the back of the set, including a returning trio of legendary titans — Regice ex, Regirock ex and Registeel ex — whose attacks are designed to reward playing all three together, plus a carried-over Deoxys ex and popular ex like Milotic, Medicham and Altaria.
It’s also a set of quiet firsts and odd quirks. It was the first English EX-era expansion to sprinkle Holofoil basic Energy into packs, and — unusually for its moment — it carries no Gold Star cards at all, bucking the trend set by the expansions on either side of it.
Two theme decks shipped alongside it, Hydrobloom (Water/Grass) and Wildfire (Lightning/Fire). But the most curious thing about EX Emerald isn’t on any single card — it’s the strange story of how the set came to exist at all.
The battles that legends are made of!
Command the legendary Pokémon of Hoenn — Rayquaza, Groudon and Kyogre — in the card game inspired by Pokémon Emerald.
— Original Pokémon USA promotional copy, 2005
The Set Japan Never Got
Here’s the oddity that makes EX Emerald special: it was never released in Japan. Almost every Pokémon set is a Japanese expansion translated for the West, but EX Emerald ran the other way. There was no “EX Emerald” in Japanese — instead, Nintendo built the set specifically for the international market, stitching it together from cards that had only ever appeared in Japan as one-off oddities.
Its contents were pulled from a grab-bag of Japanese products that never got a Western release of their own: the Gift Box Emerald, the Quick Construction Packs, the Master Kit, and a scattering of PCG-P promotional cards. Bundled together into a single numbered expansion, they gave English-speaking collectors a proper “Emerald” set to go with the game — even though, in Japan, no such thing existed.
That patchwork origin explains its other quirks, too. It’s the reason the set carries no Gold Stars when the expansions on either side of it are famous for them — there simply weren’t any in the source material — and it’s why the set feels a little like a “greatest hits of leftovers,” heavy on legendaries and reprints. For all that, it remains a genuine curiosity: one of the very few main-series sets that exists only in English, a reminder that not every chapter of Pokémon’s story was written the same way twice.
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Boosters came in four artwork variants headlined by the Hoenn legends — Rayquaza, Groudon, Kyogre and Deoxys — each holding nine cards, and every third pack swapped its reverse holo for a shiny Holofoil basic Energy. Two theme decks, Hydrobloom and Wildfire, rounded out the release.

Other Cards
Two of the set’s more interesting cards aren’t ex at all — a shiny first for the game, and a cheeky secret rare hiding past the end of the checklist.
Holofoil Fire Energy (102/106)
A small landmark: EX Emerald was the first English EX-era set to seed shiny Holofoil basic Energy into packs, turning up in place of a reverse holo in every third booster. A humble card with a first to its name.
Farfetch’d (107/106)
The set’s secret rare, numbered one past the “end” of the checklist. A charming, low-key chase card for completists — and a rare splash of Kanto in a very Hoenn set.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
With no Gold Stars to chase, EX Emerald’s value lives in its ten Pokémon-ex — led by the returning legendary titans — and its lone secret rare.
Registeel ex (100/106)
The steel titan returns as an ex, its attacks built to combo with its siblings — a centrepiece of the set’s Regi trio and a collector favourite.
Regirock ex (99/106)
The rock titan, back for a second EX-era outing and just as sought-after as part of the three-card set.
Regice ex (98/106)
The ice titan completes the trio — collectors love to display all three Regis together, exactly as the cards want to be played.
Deoxys ex (93/106)
The DNA Pokémon carries over from the previous set as an ex — a marquee legendary and a natural chase card.
Milotic ex (96/106)
The tender, beautiful serpent as an ex — one of the set’s most attractive holos and a perennial fan favourite.
Medicham ex (95/106)
A disruptive psychic ex with a striking card frame — desirable both for its art and its table presence.
Altaria ex (90/106)
The cloud dragon as an ex, with a Poké-Body that shrugs off Stage 2 attackers — a lovely, collectable holo.
Farfetch’d (107/106)
The set’s secret rare and the true finish-the-set chase — scarce, and numbered beyond the main 106.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
EX Emerald’s ex were built around denial — shutting off your opponent’s options — and a legendary trio that rewarded teamwork.
Medicham ex (95/106)
Its Wise Aura Poké-Body switches off every non-ex Poké-Power on the board — a brutal answer to the power-reliant engines of the era.
Milotic ex (96/106)
Mystic Scale locks both players out of Technical Machine cards and clears the ones in play — niche, but a hard counter to TM-based decks.
Registeel ex (100/106)
Best in a trio: its Wide Laser spreads damage across the Bench, and several of its attacks get stronger when Regice ex or Regirock ex share the field.
Camerupt ex (92/106)
Immune to Sleep and Paralysis, with a big Eruption finisher — a sturdy Fire attacker that kept swinging through status decks.
Trivia
- EX Emerald is one of very few main-series sets never released in Japan — it was built for the Western market from Japanese products (Gift Box Emerald, the Quick Construction Packs, the Master Kit and PCG-P promos) that had no English release of their own.
- Unusually for its era, it contains no Gold Star cards, despite the sets on either side of it being famous for them — hence one collector guide’s nickname, “lots of variety but no gold.”
- It was the first English EX-era set to include Holofoil basic Energy, seeded into every third booster pack in place of a reverse holo.
- The legendary titans Regice, Regirock and Registeel return as ex, with attacks specifically designed to be stronger when the trio is played together.
- The set ties into Pokémon Emerald, the third Hoenn game, with Rayquaza, Groudon, Kyogre and Deoxys headlining its booster art.
- A secret-rare Farfetch’d (107/106) hides just past the end of the checklist.
- Its two theme decks were named Hydrobloom and Wildfire.
