Overview

Pokémon TCG: XY—BREAKthrough launched on November 4, 2015 as the eighth XY expansion and the start of a brand-new era. At 162 cards plus two Secret Rares (164 total), it’s one of the biggest sets of the run, built from two Japanese sets at once — 青い衝撃 (Blue Shock) and 赤い閃光 (Red Flash), both released September 26, 2015. Its headline act: Mewtwo, in both its X and Y Mega forms.
BREAKthrough’s legacy is its brand-new mechanic. It introduced Pokémon BREAK — a whole new kind of Evolution — and delivered the format-defining Mega Mewtwo Y, alongside staple Trainers like Parallel City and Brigette that shaped competitive play for years. Two theme decks, Burning Spark (Lightning/Fire) and Night Striker (Psychic/Darkness), rounded out the launch, backed by a pair of Mega Mewtwo Elite Trainer Boxes.
Pokémon BREAK: A New Evolution
BREAKthrough’s signature innovation is Pokémon BREAK — an entirely new type of Evolution. A BREAK card is printed sideways in gleaming gold and stacks on top of its matching Pokémon: it keeps every attack and Ability of the Pokémon underneath while adding a big HP boost and a powerful new attack of its own. It was a fresh, flashy twist that gave classic Pokémon a second wind.
Mega Mewtwo: X and Y
Mewtwo headlines the set in both of its Mega forms — a nod to the X and Y games — and one of them went on to define the competitive season.
Other Mega Evolutions
Trainers That Shaped the Format
BREAKthrough’s Trainers are every bit as important as its Pokémon — several became long-term staples:
Products & Print Versions
BREAKthrough launched with booster packs in four artworks — Mewtwo X, Mewtwo Y, Houndoom and Zoroark — plus two theme decks, Burning Spark and Night Striker. Two Elite Trainer Boxes (Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y), a collector’s chest, blisters and portfolios rounded out a huge product line.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
BREAKthrough is a big set with big chase cards — almost all of them Mewtwo. Values reflect near-mint singles and shift with the market.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
BREAKthrough reshaped the competitive game on two fronts: a dominant Mega and a suite of Trainers that stuck around for years.
Trivia & Points of Interest
- The dawn of BREAK. BREAKthrough introduced Pokémon BREAK — sideways, all-gold cards that stack on a Pokémon and keep its attacks and Abilities while adding a new one. It kicked off the entire XY BREAK era.
- Two sets in one. The English release was assembled from two simultaneous Japanese sets, 青い衝撃 (Blue Shock) and 赤い閃光 (Red Flash) — which is why it’s so large at 162 main cards.
- Mewtwo times two. The set printed both Mega Mewtwo X (Fighting) and Mega Mewtwo Y (Psychic), each with its own Elite Trainer Box — a nod to the X and Y games.
- Mega Mewtwo Y ruled. Psychic Infinity’s Energy-scaling, Weakness-ignoring damage made it one of the defining decks of its season.
- Staples for years. Parallel City, Brigette, Judge and Float Stone became long-term Expanded staples straight out of this set.
- Six gold firsts. BREAKthrough debuted six Pokémon BREAK cards — Chesnaught, Raichu, Marowak, Zoroark, Florges and Noivern.
Japanese Sets, Videos & Gallery
In Japan, BREAKthrough’s cards came from two sets released the same day (September 26, 2015): 青い衝撃 (Blue Shock) and 赤い閃光 (Red Flash). Below is the Japanese packaging, the full 162-card gallery (click any card to view it full size), and a selection of videos.
