Black & White—Next Destinies, released on February 8, 2012, is one of the most pivotal sets of the modern era — because it brought back Pokémon-EX. At 103 cards it wasn’t the largest set, but the mechanic it reintroduced would headline competitive Pokémon for the better part of a decade.
It reached beyond Unova, too. Where the Black & White series had so far stuck almost exclusively to Generation V, Next Destinies opened the doors to Pokémon from across the franchise — most famously a certain Psychic Legendary from Kanto whose card would come to define an entire format.
This is where the modern game found its shape.
Expect a Battle-Filled Destiny with Pokémon-EX!
The Pokémon Trading Card Game: Black & White—Next Destinies expansion is loaded with powerful Pokémon-EX to give you extraordinary excitement! Discover great Pokémon like Reshiram-EX and Zekrom-EX, and even Pokémon from beyond the Unova region, like Mewtwo-EX. Next Destinies delivers your destiny: Pokémon with exceptional HP, Special Energy and Trainer cards with expanded powers, and expert strategies to extend your victory streaks!
— official Next Destinies expansion blurb
The Return of Pokémon-EX
Pokémon-EX weren’t new — the mechanic had existed years earlier — but Next Destinies rebooted it for the modern game, and the new version was simple and seismic. A Pokémon-EX was a single powerful Basic Pokémon with unusually high HP and hard-hitting attacks. The catch, printed on every one: “When a Pokémon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.” Enormous power, at double the risk.
No card captured that better than Mewtwo-EX (54). With 170 HP and an attack — X Ball — that dealt 20 damage for every Energy on both itself and its target, it could hit for staggering numbers off just a couple of Colorless Energy. And because it was Psychic-weak, the best answer to a Mewtwo-EX was your own Mewtwo-EX. Nearly every serious deck ran one, sparking the legendary “Mewtwo wars” that dominated the season.
The Unova box legendaries got the EX treatment too. Reshiram-EX (22) and Zekrom-EX (51), each a beefy 180 HP, brought Fire and Lightning firepower — Reshiram’s Brave Fire and Zekrom’s Strong Volt both crashing in for 150 — reprising the game’s signature rivalry in the new format.
Mewtwo-EX (54/99)
The card that defined an era. 170 HP, and an X Ball attack that scales 20 damage per Energy on both Pokémon — off just Colorless cost. Psychic-weak, so the best counter was another Mewtwo-EX: the “Mewtwo wars.”
Reshiram-EX (22/99)
The Fire box legendary as a 180-HP Basic Pokémon-EX. Glinting Claw flips for extra, and Brave Fire crashes in for a massive 150 — a top-tier attacker of the format.
Zekrom-EX (51/99)
The Lightning box legendary, and Reshiram-EX’s rival. Also 180 HP, its Strong Volt swings for 150 (discarding two Energy) — the electric half of the era’s signature duel.
Completing the Six
Six Pokémon-EX debuted in the set. Kyurem-EX (38) completed the Unova dragon trio — its Frozen Wings stripped Special Energy, while Hail Blizzard hit for 120. Shaymin-EX (5), at a slim 110 HP, was the comeback specialist: its Revenge Blast grew by 30 for every Prize your opponent had already taken, making it deadliest exactly when you were losing.
And Regigigas-EX (82) rounded out the lineup as a Colorless powerhouse, its Raging Hammer scaling up with the damage it had taken — a Pokémon that hit back harder the more it had been hurt.
Kyurem-EX (38/99)
The third Unova dragon as a 180-HP EX. Frozen Wings peels a Special Energy off the Defending Pokémon, and Hail Blizzard delivers a chilly 120.
Shaymin-EX (5/99)
The comeback attacker. At 110 HP it’s fragile, but Revenge Blast gains 30 damage for every Prize your opponent has already taken — deadliest when you’re furthest behind.
Regigigas-EX (82/99)
A Colorless bruiser that punishes patience. Raging Hammer hits harder for every damage counter on Regigigas — the more it’s been hurt, the harder it strikes back.
Full Art Pokémon-EX
Next Destinies also raised the ceiling on rarity. Every one of its six Pokémon-EX had a second, ultra-rare Full Art version — the artwork stretched edge to edge with a textured, etched finish. These Full Art Pokémon-EX instantly became the most desirable pulls in the set, and the template they set — a powerful playable card paired with a stunning Full Art chase version — would define Pokémon TCG rarity for years to come.
Mewtwo-EX — Full Art (98/99)
The ultra-rare Full Art print of the format’s defining card — edge-to-edge art with an etched finish, and one of the most iconic chase cards of the entire Black & White era.
Print Versions
Next Destinies came in four booster arts — Mewtwo, Reshiram, Zekrom and Regigigas. Every pack was a shot at one of the six Pokémon-EX, a coveted Full Art version, and a code card for the online game.

Trainers of Note
Beyond its Pokémon, the set seeded the format with useful support. Skyarrow Bridge (91) was a Stadium that shaved a Colorless off the retreat cost of every Basic Pokémon in play — a small effect that let fragile attackers reposition freely, and a fixture of countless decklists. And Prism Energy (93), a Special Energy that could count as any single type for Pokémon with two or more types, quietly widened the kinds of decks players could build.
Skyarrow Bridge (91/99)
A quietly essential Stadium: every Basic Pokémon in play retreats for one less Colorless Energy. It kept fragile attackers mobile and earned a slot in deck after deck.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Next Destinies (BW4, Feb 2012) launched Pokémon-EX into the Black & White era, and its six Full Art secret rares (#94-99) are the set’s blue-chip chase cards — led by the format-defining Mewtwo-EX, with PSA 10 gems far outrunning raw near-mint copies.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Next Destinies reshaped the 2012 Modified format almost overnight. It debuted Basic Pokémon-EX plus the energy acceleration to abuse them, launching the ‘Mewtwo wars’ era where one splashable attacker and its enablers defined nearly every top-tier deck.
