Synopsis
Ash wins his quarterfinal with a single Flying Press, Sawyer defeats Tierno in a hard-fought battle that ends with a newly revealed Mega Sceptile, and Ash’s old friend Goodra returns to join his team for the semifinals. Malva’s League report recaps the early rounds, in which Ash, Alain, Sawyer, Tierno and the strong Trainers Astrid and Remo have advanced. In the quarterfinals, Astrid’s Mega Absol fires Psycho Cut, but Hawlucha dodges and knocks it out with Flying Press, sending Ash to the semifinals. Alain also wins, and Sawyer tells Ash he has a secret weapon ready before they part, while Team Rocket are kept too busy by Malva’s demands to steal anything. Remo becomes the third semifinalist, and Shauna arrives in time to watch the last quarterfinal, Tierno against Sawyer.
Sawyer’s Honedge has evolved into Aegislash. Tierno’s dancing Ludicolo summons a downpour with Rain Dance, gaining speed through its Swift Swim Ability, but Aegislash raises its Attack with Swords Dance and King’s Shield, cuts through Hydro Pump with Sacred Sword, and slices through Solar Beam to win. Tierno’s Raichu dodges Slash with Dig and knocks Aegislash out from below, but Sawyer’s Slurpuff infatuates her with Attract. Tierno recalls her and switches to Blastoise, which is immune to a second Attract because it is male, and Hydro Cannon knocks Slurpuff out. Against Sawyer’s final Pokémon, Sceptile, Blastoise’s Ice Beam is countered by Leaf Storm and a Leaf Blade lands, and when Blastoise charges with Skull Bash, Sawyer orders Frenzy Plant, whose vines hurl it into the sky. As it falls, Blastoise uses Rain Dance once more before fainting on impact.
Tierno’s battle-ready Raichu prepares a Thunder that cannot miss in the rain, but Sawyer reveals a Key Stone and Mega Evolves Sceptile. Its new Ability, Lightning Rod, makes Thunder useless, and Mega Sceptile slices Focus Blast apart with Dragon Claw and knocks Raichu out, making Sawyer the fourth semifinalist. The draw sets Alain against Remo and Ash against Sawyer in the semifinals. At sunset, Ash’s friends point out that the semifinals are six-on-six Full Battles, while Ash has only five Pokémon with him. Ash runs outside, saying he is expecting someone, and a truck pulls up with Keanan at the wheel and Goodra riding in the back. A flashback reveals that during his recent visit to the wetlands, Ash asked Goodra to help in the semifinals, and Goodra agreed. Ash calls out his full team, and all six cheer as he vows to beat Sawyer.
