Silver Tempest Lugia booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest is the twelfth and final numbered main expansion of the Sword & Shield era, released in English on 11 November 2022. Its 215-card set is fronted by Lugia VSTAR, and it carries on both of the era’s signature features — Pokémon VSTAR and Radiant Pokémon — along with the third and final Trainer Gallery.

Where earlier SWSH sets leaned into the Hisui region, Silver Tempest turns nostalgic: the Johto legendary Lugia headlines, joined by Ho-Oh V, for a deliberately classic, end-of-era feel. On the competitive side, the set gave the game one of its most iconic decks — Lugia VSTAR / Archeops. The Japanese counterpart, Paradigm Trigger (s12), had arrived on 21 October 2022.

The English set totals 215 cards — 195 in the regular numbering plus 20 secret rares (196–215) — and a separate 30-card Trainer Gallery (TG01–TG30) brings the full expansion to 245 cards. Crown Zenith, the special set that closed out Sword & Shield, followed in January 2023.

An ominous rumble echoes in the distance, and Lugia VSTAR emerges from the ocean’s dark depths to answer its call! Alongside Radiant Pokémon, powerful Pokémon VSTAR, and a dazzling new Trainer Gallery, the Sword & Shield—Silver Tempest expansion brings the winds of change — discover the storm and the calm at its heart.

Set Highlights: The Return of Lugia

Silver Tempest is built around Lugia VSTAR (139/195) — but the card collectors chase hardest is its counterpart, the breathtaking Lugia V alternate art (186/195), widely considered one of the best illustrations of the whole era and the set’s undisputed money card. The nostalgic Johto theme is completed by Ho-Oh V (187/195), and the set is rounded out by six VSTARs and three Radiant Pokémon.

The Lugia VSTAR & Archeops Engine

Lugia VSTAR gave the format one of its most iconic and powerful decks. Its VSTAR Power, “Summoning Star,” lets you put up to two Colorless Pokémon that don’t have a Rule Box from your discard pile straight onto your Bench — and the deck is built to abuse it. You deliberately discard two copies of Archeops (147/195) early, then use Summoning Star to drop both onto the Bench at once, skipping the slow Stage-2 setup entirely.

From there, each Archeops’ “Primal Turbo” Ability searches out and attaches up to two Special Energy every turn — enormous, repeatable acceleration that powers Lugia’s 220-damage “Tempest Dive” and cheap single-prize partners alike. Lugia VSTAR / Archeops became a top-tier deck across the 2022–2023 season and a fixture of the 2023 World Championships. Alongside it, Regidrago VSTAR (136) anchored its own popular Dragon toolbox archetype.

Radiant Pokémon Continue

The shimmering Radiant Pokémon introduced in Astral Radiance return here with three new cards. As ever, you may include only one Radiant Pokémon in your entire deck. Radiant Alakazam (59) saw the most competitive play, joined by Radiant Tsareena (16) and Radiant Jirachi (120).

Silver Tempest carries the third and final Trainer Gallery — 30 character-art cards, TG01–TG30. Its standout is the Rayquaza VMAX (TG20) “Character Super Rare” alternate art, a spectacular illustration that became one of the set’s biggest chases (and, tellingly, is worth far more than its own gold-rainbow version at TG29). Duraludon VMAX (TG21) and Blaziken V/VMAX round out the V-Pokémon, and the subset closes with full-art Trainers.

Those Trainers — Gordie (TG24), Judge (TG25), Professor Burnet (TG26), Raihan (TG27) and Sordward & Shielbert (TG28) — are collector favourites.

Silver Tempest shipped with the full Sword & Shield retail range. Booster packs held 10 cards each (plus a Pokémon TCG Live code card) and came in four wrappers — Lugia, Alolan Vulpix, Regieleki and Regidrago. A booster box held 36 packs. The Elite Trainer Box was themed around Alolan Vulpix VSTAR (a wintry look to match the November release), with 8 packs, 65 Alolan-Vulpix sleeves, 45 Energy, dice, a VSTAR marker and accessories. Build & Battle boxes, a Build & Battle Stadium and Lugia V / VSTAR collections completed the line-up.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

The core of Silver Tempest comes from the Japanese set Paradigm Trigger (s12), released on 21 October 2022 with Lugia VSTAR as its headline card. As with every late-Sword & Shield set, English localisation folded in extra cards left over from other Japanese products, plus additional secret rares and the Trainer Gallery, to reach the larger 245-card English release.

Japanese Paradigm Trigger boosters hold 5 cards per pack rather than 10, so collectors chasing the same Lugia artwork can buy either the English or the Japanese product.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Silver Tempest is a genuine high-ceiling chase set, but its value is top-heavy on one card. Approximate near-mint raw values are a guide only and move constantly.

Lugia V — 186/195 (Alternate Art)

Lugia V — 186/195 (Alternate Art)

THE card of the set, and the definitive chase by a wide margin. The “Lugia rising from the water” illustration is regarded as one of the finest alternate arts of the entire era — regularly $300–500 raw, with gem-mint PSA 10 copies well into four figures. More than any other card, this is what people are hunting when they open Silver Tempest.

Rayquaza VMAX — TG20 (Trainer Gallery)

Rayquaza VMAX — TG20 (Trainer Gallery)

The set’s #2 chase: a stunning “Character Super Rare” alternate art of Rayquaza in flight. Typically $150–200 raw. Notably, this illustrated version is worth far more than its own gold/rainbow secret at TG29 — collectors want the art.

Serena — 207/195 (Secret Rare)

Serena — 207/195 (Secret Rare)

One of the most beloved and most-searched Trainer arts of the whole Sword & Shield era. It was a marquee launch chase; while its price has since cooled to around $15–20, its popularity stayed sky-high — a perfect example of an “art headline” card versus a “money headline” card. (The Full Art version at 193/195 shares the same illustration.)

Regidrago V — 184/195 (Alternate Art)

Regidrago V — 184/195 (Alternate Art)

A striking alternate art of the Dragon legendary and a solid secondary chase, generally around $20–30 raw, with graded copies well beyond.

Lugia VSTAR — 211/195 (Gold Secret)

Lugia VSTAR — 211/195 (Gold Secret)

The gold “hyper rare” version of the set’s mascot VSTAR and the top-numbered card in the set — a premium collector chase (roughly $20–30 raw), joined by the rainbow Lugia VSTAR at 202/195.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Silver Tempest gave the competitive game one of its signature decks and reinforced several archetypes heading into the final stretch of the Sword & Shield format.

Lugia VSTAR — 139/195

Lugia VSTAR — 139/195

The engine behind one of the era’s most iconic decks. Its VSTAR Power “Summoning Star” puts up to two non-Rule-Box Colorless Pokémon from the discard onto the Bench — famously two Archeops at once — and its attack “Tempest Dive” hits for 220 while clearing a Stadium. A powerhouse that was a top-tier deck all the way to the 2023 World Championships.

Archeops — 147/195

Archeops — 147/195

The perfect partner. Its “Primal Turbo” Ability searches out and attaches up to two Special Energy each turn — and because Lugia drops it straight from the discard, you get two of them online early for up to four Special Energy per turn. This relentless acceleration is what made Lugia so explosive.

Regidrago VSTAR — 136/195

Regidrago VSTAR — 136/195

A flexible “toolbox” attacker. Its VSTAR Power “Legacy Star” digs for two cards from the discard, while “Apex Dragon” copies an attack from any Dragon-type Pokémon in your discard pile — letting one Regidrago threaten a huge range of attacks. It anchored a long-running competitive archetype.

Trivia

  • Silver Tempest is the final numbered main expansion of the Sword & Shield era — only the special set Crown Zenith (January 2023) followed before Scarlet & Violet began.
  • Its greatest legacy is the Lugia VSTAR / Archeops deck — one of the most iconic and powerful archetypes of 2022–2023 and a fixture of the 2023 World Championships.
  • The set leans hard into Johto nostalgia: both legendary birds, Lugia and Ho-Oh, appear, giving the era a deliberately classic send-off.
  • The Lugia V alternate art (186) is one of the most admired illustrations of the whole era and the set’s runaway money card — notoriously hard to pull.
  • The Serena card (Full Art 193 / Secret 207) became one of the most beloved and searched-for Trainer arts of the era — a textbook “popularity vs. market value” story, since its price cooled while its fame did not.
  • It carried the third and final Trainer Gallery, whose Rayquaza VMAX (TG20) alt art is worth far more than its own gold-rainbow version — proof that collectors prize illustration over rarity tier.
  • Japanese Paradigm Trigger boxes were part of the era’s famous “God Pack” phenomenon — a rare pack in which every card is a holo or secret rare.
  • Late-SWSH secret-rare bloat is on full display here: many Trainers were printed as both a Full Art and a Rainbow secret, on top of a 30-card Trainer Gallery.
