HeartGold & SoulSilver did more than start a new series — it rebooted the game. Released in February 2010 to accompany the Johto remakes of the same name, the set retired the Pokémon LV.X mechanic that Arceus had carried and replaced it with two brand-new kinds of card.
Those were Pokémon Prime — powerful holo Evolutions marked by gold name text and jagged, art-spilling borders — and Pokémon LEGEND, legendary Pokémon so grand they were split across two cards you had to assemble on your Bench. The set was steeped in Johto nostalgia, from its largely Johto-native Pokémon to booster art fronted by the region’s mascots.
For a generation of players returning to Gold and Silver, it felt like coming home.
Journey to the Johto Region to Reveal HeartGold & SoulSilver!
Pokémon are the heart and soul of any great Pokémon Trainer, and now is your chance to catch some of the greatest Pokémon of all time! With new kinds of cards that will change the way you play—like Pokémon Prime and the astonishing Pokémon LEGENDs Ho-Oh and Lugia—plus lots of Trainer cards that will accelerate your game and select Energy cards with a brand-new look, the HeartGold & SoulSilver expansion will get you started on your journey to greatness!
— official HeartGold & SoulSilver expansion blurb
A New Era: Prime and LEGEND
The headline was the arrival of two mechanics. Pokémon Prime were single, especially powerful Evolution cards — you could tell one at a glance from the gold foil of its name and the artwork bleeding past its borders. Typhlosion Prime (110) was a perfect example: its Afterburner Poké-Power pulled Fire Energy straight out of the discard pile and onto your team, fuelling a fast, aggressive Fire deck.
Pokémon LEGEND went further still. A single legendary Pokémon was printed across two separate cards, and you had to play both halves together to bring it into being. Ho-Oh LEGEND (111 and 112) assembled the rainbow bird on your Bench, where its Sacred Rainbow Poké-Body turned all its Energy into Fire and Bright Wing hit for 100 — and, unusually, it gave up only a single Prize when Knocked Out.
Between them, Prime and LEGEND closed the door on Pokémon LV.X for good — the cleanest mechanical break the game had taken in years, a fresh slate to match a fresh, nostalgic setting.
Typhlosion Prime (110/123)
A showcase of the new Prime cards. Afterburner drags Fire Energy out of your discard pile and onto your team each turn, powering a fast, aggressive Fire deck — gold name text and border-spilling art included.
Ho-Oh LEGEND (111 & 112/123)
Half of a two-card Pokémon LEGEND — you play both halves together. Sacred Rainbow turns all its Energy into Fire, Bright Wing hits for 100, and, uniquely, it surrenders just one Prize when Knocked Out.
Print Versions
HeartGold & SoulSilver came in four booster arts led by the two games’ cover legendaries, Ho-Oh and Lugia, alongside the Primes Ampharos and Donphan. Every pack held a shot at a Pokémon Prime, a piece of a Pokémon LEGEND, or the set’s shining secret rare.

The Pokémon Prime
Six Pokémon Prime debuted in the set — Ampharos, Blissey, Donphan, Feraligatr, Meganium and Typhlosion — and several went straight into competitive decks.
Donphan Prime (107) was a wall on legs. Its Exoskeleton Poké-Body shaved 20 damage off every attack it took, while a one-Energy Earthquake swung for 60 — cheap, durable and relentless, it anchored some of the era’s most stubborn decks.
Feraligatr Prime (108) revived a classic engine. Its Rain Dance Poké-Power let you attach Water Energy from your hand as many times as you liked each turn, powering huge attackers in a heartbeat — a direct callback to the beloved Base Set Blastoise.
Donphan Prime (107/123)
A tank of an attacker. Exoskeleton reduces every hit it takes by 20, while a single-Energy Earthquake deals 60 — cheap, sturdy and a fixture of the era’s grindiest decks.
Feraligatr Prime (108/123)
A Water-acceleration engine reborn. Rain Dance attaches Water Energy from your hand as often as you like each turn — a modern echo of Base Set Blastoise — feeding huge attackers fast.
Staples and the Red Gyarados
HeartGold & SoulSilver also seeded the format with foundational Trainer cards. Chief among them was Pokémon Collector (97), a Supporter that fetched up to three Basic Pokémon from your deck at once — a setup engine so essential it appeared in nearly every deck for years.
And at the very back of the set, as card 123/123, sat its shining trophy: a secret-rare Gyarados depicting the famous Red Gyarados of the Lake of Rage — the Shiny Pokémon every Gold and Silver player remembers. It remains one of the most iconic chase cards of the era.
Pokémon Collector (97/123)
The setup Supporter of a generation. It searches your deck for up to three Basic Pokémon and puts them straight into your hand — a first-turn staple in nearly every deck for years.
Gyarados (123/123)
The set’s shining secret rare: the Red Gyarados of the Lake of Rage, the Shiny every Gold and Silver player chased. Thrash and Heavy Storm back up one of the era’s most iconic chase cards.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Released February 2010, HeartGold & SoulSilver (HS1) revived Johto and debuted the coveted ‘Prime’ rarity, gold-spiked holos that became instant chase cards. Collector value centers on the four Johto-starter Primes and the set’s crown jewel, the two-part Lugia LEGEND, especially in PSA 10.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
HGSS base launched the HGSS-on Modified format, and its Trainers and Primes became that era’s backbone. Consistency engines like Collector, Communication and Cleffa appeared in nearly every deck, while Feraligatr Prime headlined a new wave of energy-acceleration archetypes.
