Paldea Evolved Chien-Pao booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet—Paldea Evolved is the second main expansion of the Scarlet & Violet era, released in English on 9 June 2023. Following the era-opening base set, it is a huge 193-card expansion (279 with secret rares) that deepened the new format — adding the final Paldean starter evolutions as Pokémon ex, the legendary Treasures of Ruin quartet, and one of the most important Trainer cards of the era.

Where the base set laid the foundation, Paldea Evolved built the era’s first great decks. Chien-Pao ex paired with Baxcalibur to create an explosive Water engine, the starter trio of Meowscarada ex, Skeledirge ex and Quaquaval ex gave every type a headline attacker, and the Supporter Iono became a defining piece of disruption played in nearly every deck.

For collectors, Paldea Evolved is remembered for its deep Special Illustration Rare line-up — above all the Iono SIR, which became one of the most iconic and valuable Trainer cards of the whole era — alongside full-art ex Pokémon and gold Hyper Rares.

Command a Rousing Performance! Energy surges as new powers awaken and perilous legends are revealed! First partners Meowscarada ex, Skeledirge ex, and Quaquaval ex have evolved to take the stage with mesmerizing magic, song, and dance.

Set Highlights: The Format Takes Shape

Paldea Evolved is where the Scarlet & Violet era found its footing. It continued the Pokémon ex and Tera Pokémon mechanics from the base set and delivered the cards that would anchor competitive play for a year — while giving collectors one of the era’s deepest secret-rare runs.

Chien-Pao ex & the Baxcalibur Engine

Chien-Pao ex (61/193) and Baxcalibur (60/193) formed the defining archetype of the set. Baxcalibur’s Super Cold Ability accelerates Water Energy from hand onto your Pokémon, while Chien-Pao ex’s Hail Blade discards that Energy to hit for enormous, scaling damage — an explosive combo that dominated the competitive metagame.

The Treasures of Ruin & Starter ex Trio

Paldea Evolved introduced the legendary Treasures of Ruin as ex cards — Chien-Pao, Ting-Lu ex, Wo-Chien ex and Chi-Yu ex — and completed the Paldean starters with Meowscarada ex, Skeledirge ex and Quaquaval ex, giving Grass, Fire and Water decks a marquee ex apiece.

Iono & the Full-Art Chase

The set’s collecting story is led by Iono — a best-in-class disruption Supporter whose Special Illustration Rare (269/193) became one of the most sought-after and valuable Trainer cards of the era. She is joined by SIRs of every ex and a full slate of full-art Supporters.

Paldea Evolved launched with the full Scarlet & Violet retail line-up. Booster packs held 10 cards and came in five wrappers — the starter trio Meowscarada, Skeledirge and Quaquaval, plus Chien-Pao and Ting-Lu — sold in booster boxes of 36. Two Elite Trainer Boxes (Chien-Pao and Ting-Lu), Build & Battle Boxes and Stadiums, and later premium collections rounded out the range.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

The English Paldea Evolved is an unusually large set drawn from three Japanese releases — Snow Hazard (sv2P), fronted by Chien-Pao ex, and Clay Burst (sv2D), fronted by Ting-Lu ex, which launched together on 14 April 2023, plus the earlier special subset Triplet Beat (sv1a) from March 2023. The English release merges all three, folds in extra promo cards, and renumbers everything into one 193-card run.

As always, the Japanese boosters hold fewer cards per pack and the two sets were sold separately, so collectors after the original printings chase all three.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Paldea Evolved is a chase-heavy set with a deep Special Illustration Rare and Hyper Rare run. Approximate near-mint raw prices are a guide only — the market moves constantly.

Iono — 269/193 (Special Illustration Rare)

Iono — 269/193 (Special Illustration Rare)

The undisputed crown jewel of the set and one of the most iconic Trainer cards of the entire Scarlet & Violet era. Its gorgeous full-scene Special Illustration Rare of Iono made it a runaway grail — and, as a genuinely great competitive card, one people chased twice over.

Chien-Pao ex — 261/193 (Special Illustration Rare)

Chien-Pao ex — 261/193 (Special Illustration Rare)

The face of the set’s best deck given a sweeping icy SIR. A top chase for players and collectors alike.

Meowscarada ex — 256/193 (Special Illustration Rare)

Meowscarada ex — 256/193 (Special Illustration Rare)

The Grass starter’s Special Illustration Rare — a fan-favourite illustration and one of the most popular pulls in the set.

Boss’s Orders (Ghetsis) — 265/193 (Special Illustration Rare)

Boss’s Orders (Ghetsis) — 265/193 (Special Illustration Rare)

A striking full-scene SIR of the returning villain Ghetsis on the era’s most-played gust effect — a standout among the full-art Trainers.

Chien-Pao ex — 274/193 (Hyper Rare)

Chien-Pao ex — 274/193 (Hyper Rare)

The gold, etched Hyper Rare of the format’s signature attacker — the top-end chase for players completing the numbered run.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Paldea Evolved built the era’s first tier-one decks; several of its cards defined the competitive Standard format for the better part of a year.

Chien-Pao ex — 61/193

Chien-Pao ex — 61/193

The centrepiece of the format’s dominant Water deck. Hail Blade discards Water Energy from your Pokémon to deal 60 damage per Energy — huge, flexible damage that, paired with Baxcalibur, could threaten knockouts from turn two.

Baxcalibur — 60/193

Baxcalibur — 60/193

The engine behind Chien-Pao. Its Super Cold Ability attaches a Water Energy from hand to each of your Pokémon every turn, fuelling explosive, consistent boards.

Iono — 185/193

Iono — 185/193

One of the best Supporters of the era. It shuffles both players’ hands away and draws new cards equal to their remaining Prizes — a devastating disruption-and-draw effect that saw play in almost every deck.

Meowscarada ex — 15/193

Meowscarada ex — 15/193

A fast, efficient Grass attacker whose Grass Whistle and cheap costs made it a strong, popular pick throughout the format.
