01Overview
Meet Wartortle
Everything you need to know about the Turtle Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Every great adventure has a middle chapter, and in the Squirtle family that chapter has fluffy ears. Wartortle, the Turtle Pokémon and #0008 in the National Pokédex, appears when a Squirtle reaches level 16 and stays by its Trainer's side until it becomes the cannon-toting Blastoise at level 36. A pure Water type, it has been around since the very first games, Red and Green, in 1996.
It is easy to pick out of a crowd. Its body is indigo, two small fangs poke out from its upper jaw, and a pair of feather-like ears covered in pale blue fur sweep back from its head. Its shell, brown on top and pale yellow beneath with a thick white rim, is bigger than Squirtle's, which makes getting about on land more of an effort. The real showstopper is the tail: big, thick and wavy, and so fluffy that it can never be fully tucked away inside the shell.
“This Pokémon is very popular as a pet. Its fur-covered tail is a symbol of its longevity.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996
All that fur has a job to do. In the water Wartortle uses its ears and tail as rudders and balancing rods, so it stays steady at speed, and it traps air in its fur before long dives. It is happiest in freshwater ponds and lakes, where it lurks beneath the surface to ambush unwary prey. It can be a little shy, too: tap it on the head and it pulls in, though its tail still sticks out. Even asleep, snug inside its shell, it leaves that tail poking out, perhaps to feel what is going on around it.
Above all, Wartortle is a living symbol of long life. It is said to live for 10,000 years, its tail fur grows deeper in colour as it ages, and a truly old one may carry algae or moss on its shell, along with scratches that prove how tough it is in battle. No wonder its tail is seen as a lucky charm, or that it is a firm favourite with older people and is popular as a pet.
Squeezed between cute little Squirtle and the heavy-hitting Blastoise, Wartortle is easy to overlook, yet it has plenty of fans who love its swept-back ears and curly tail. Players of the original games know it as the rival's partner on the S.S. Anne if they picked Charmander, and its anime debut gave it a whole island colony of its own.
How big is Wartortle?

At 1.0 m (3′03″) Wartortle stands about as tall as a four-year-old child, and at 22.5 kg (49.6 lb) it would only just sneak under the usual 23 kg limit for a checked airline suitcase – tail fluff included.

Its base experience yield was 143 in Generations I–IV and 142 from Generation V, and its base friendship dropped from 70 to 50 in Generation VIII. Its 405 total is exactly the same as Ivysaur's and Charmeleon's, the other two Kanto middle stages.

Sprites through the ages
Spin-offs & cameos
Super Smash Bros.
Wartortle has never made it into Super Smash Bros. in person – no fighter slot, no Poké Ball role, no trophy of its own – but it does get name-checked. Squirtle's trophy in Melee notes that it evolves into Wartortle and then Blastoise, and its Brawl trophy mentions Wartortle again. The rest of the family has done rather better. Squirtle turned up in Melee as the very first of the Poké Floats, then became a fighter in Brawl as one third of the Pokémon Trainer's team alongside Ivysaur and Charizard, squirting Water Gun, sliding about with Withdraw and joining the Triple Finish Final Smash; it went back to being a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U before rejoining the Trainer in Ultimate. Blastoise has burst out of a Poké Ball to join the fray, and Mega Blastoise earned a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Since the Trainer's Squirtle never evolves mid-match, Wartortle is still waiting for its call-up.
Pokémon GO
Wartortle has been in Pokémon GO since launch day in July 2016. A Squirtle evolves into it for 25 Candy, it takes another 100 to reach Blastoise, and as a buddy it earns Candy every 3 km. Its big day came on 8 July 2018, when Squirtle's first Community Day debuted Shiny Squirtle, Wartortle and Blastoise, and the event's sunglasses-wearing Squirtle kept its shades as it evolved, giving Wartortle a cool new look. A Community Day Classic on 9 July 2023 brought those shades back. Wartortle has also worn a party hat and a Pikachu visor, it battles with Water Gun or Bite and charged attacks such as Aqua Jet, Ice Beam and Hydro Pump, and it can be found as a Shadow Pokémon – purify one and it can learn Return. Further up the family tree, Mega Blastoise arrived with Mega Evolution on 27 August 2020, and Gigantamax Blastoise later joined Max Battles.
There is no wild Wartortle on the tables: bag a Squirtle first, then evolve it to add Wartortle to your Pokédex.
Bring your own Wartortle over from Red, Blue or Yellow, and Stadium's Pokédex reveals how it stores air in its fur before long dives.
Its Pokédex text depends on the cartridge you plug in: Gold's line about algae-covered shells, or Silver's about its clever swimming balance.
A rare piece, turning up on Endless Levels 56 and 65, Forever Level 6 and in Mr. Who's Den.
Wild Wartortle roam Northwind Field (27F–29F). Recruit one and it settles in the Turtleshell Pond friend area – and likes to remind you that it lives a long time.
Fiore Browser #077 lives in Lyra Forest and fires globs of water; once captured, it lends a hand with its Soak field move.
Waiting to be recruited deep in Lake Afar (B9F–B16F).
Almia Browser #012, found in Vien Forest, attacks by squirting water from its mouth and helps out with Soak.
The expanded Explorers adventure still has Wartortle waiting in Lake Afar.
One of the Pokémon Pikachu can meet in the chilly Iceberg Zone.
Found in Rainbow Park Stage 57 and Blau Salon Stage 411; its Stabilize skill can sweep one of the opponent's disruptions off the board.
Lives at Pearl Lake in Pearl Marsh, where it can even appear as the boss guarding the entrance.
Have a chat with the Wartortle in Capim Town to recruit it. Its secret to a long life? 'Taking good care of my tail.'
In from launch day. Evolve Squirtle for 25 Candy, chase its Shiny and sunglasses-wearing forms from Squirtle's Community Days, or catch it as a Shadow Pokémon.
Pops up in the tutorial and across many Seas, from the Charizard and Gengar Seas to the Mewtwo and Bulbasaur Seas.
Hatch a Squirtle from an Egg to pair it with your own player character, and it can grow into Wartortle.
The Switch remake keeps Wartortle in Northwind Field, now from 20F to 29F.
Blastoise, a Defender, starts each match as Squirtle and spends the early game as Wartortle – and even its holowear, like the Sacred and Pokébuki Styles, has a Wartortle version.
A Slumbering-type ingredient specialist that brings back Moomoo Milk, Soothing Cacao and Bean Sausage. It sleeps tucked into its shell, with its long, furry tail poking out.
It is drawn to hydrated tall grass and humid spots, has a taste for spicy flavours, and loves lots of water, cleanliness, healing, exercise and hard stuff.
Moves
Wartortle has always been the patient middle shell. In Red and Green it knew the same eight moves as Squirtle – Tackle, Tail Whip, Bubble, Water Gun, Bite, Withdraw, Skull Bash and Hydro Pump – but made trainers wait longer for each one, holding Hydro Pump back until level 47. Gold and Silver taught it Rapid Spin, Protect and Rain Dance, even as Hydro Pump slipped to a lofty 53, and Diamond and Pearl added Water Pulse and Aqua Tail, with Iron Defense joining from Platinum.
The modern games are far less stingy. Since Sword and Shield, Wartortle starts with Water Gun and Withdraw and picks up a new move every five levels from 20, including the daring Shell Smash at 35, and Scarlet and Violet swap its closing Skull Bash for a 120-power Wave Crash. Legends: Z-A goes its own way with Bubble Beam, Icy Wind, Aqua Ring, Aqua Jet and Liquidation. And for collectors, a Wartortle evolved from one of Generation V's event Squirtle can know Hydro Cannon – a move no ordinary Wartortle can touch.
Signature moves
The classic duck into the shell. A level-31 move in Red and Blue, it dropped to level 10 in Gold and Silver and has been part of Wartortle's starting kit since Sword and Shield; only Legends: Z-A leaves it out of the level-up list.
Those little fangs mean business: Bite is in every Wartortle level-up list ever made, from Red and Green to Legends: Z-A. It started out as a Normal-type move and turned Dark-type in Gold and Silver.
Wartortle's spinning-top trick arrived at level 25 in Gold and Silver as a feeble 20-power move; Sword and Shield moved it to level 9 and boosted it to 50 power.
A head-first charge learned at level 39 in Red and Blue. It grew from 100 to 130 power in X and Y, closed the level-up list in Let's Go (59) and Sword and Shield (50), and returns as a 150-power TM in Legends: Z-A.
The grand finale of every level-up list from Red and Blue to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, arriving anywhere from level 44 in Diamond and Pearl to a lofty 53 in Gold, Silver, Ruby and Sapphire. It now comes at 45, and Legends: Z-A makes it a TM-only move.
Sword and Shield's daring new trick at level 35: Wartortle cracks open its own defences for a big boost to power and speed, and it still arrives at 35 in Scarlet and Violet.
No Wartortle can learn the ultimate Water-type attack on its own, but one evolved from a Generation V event Squirtle – the Sticker Promotional Egg in Japan or the Korean Egg – keeps it for good.

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow9 level-up · 24 TM/HM
Wartortle only turns up by evolving Squirtle at level 16. Squirtle is one of the three first partners from Professor Oak in Red, Green and Blue, and in Yellow Officer Jenny hands one over in Vermilion City once you have the Thunder Badge – and in Red and Blue, picking Charmander means your rival's Squirtle grows into a Wartortle too. It knows the same eight moves as Squirtle, plus a second helping of Bubble from the start, but from Bite onwards everything arrives later: Hydro Pump waits until level 47 rather than 42. In this generation a move's category follows its type, so Bite (still a Normal-type move) is physical and every Water attack is special. The transfer list shows Generation II moves a Wartortle can carry back to Red, Blue or Yellow through the Time Capsule.

Generation II · Gold, Silver & Crystal13 level-up · 29 TM/HM · 6 egg · 1 tutor · 1 event
No Wartortle lives in Gold, Silver or Crystal: bring one over from the Kanto games through the Time Capsule, or evolve an event Squirtle. Bite becomes a Dark-type move, and Rapid Spin, Protect and Rain Dance join the level-up list – though Hydro Pump now waits until a lofty level 53. Crystal's move tutor teaches Ice Beam, and a Squirtle from the Pokémon Center New York event keeps its Zap Cannon after evolving. Breeding brings the first Egg Moves; Flail and Foresight have to be chain-bred, passed down from a father that inherited them itself.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor list also covers XD)13 level-up · 24 TM/HM · 8 egg · 18 tutor
Evolve the Squirtle Professor Oak offers in Pallet Town in FireRed or LeafGreen (as in Red and Blue, a rival who takes Squirtle ends up with a Wartortle too); Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald only get Wartortle by trade or by evolving an event Squirtle. The level-up list is the same as in Gold and Silver, categories still follow the move's type (so Dive and Waterfall count as special attacks), and the tutor list covers FireRed and LeafGreen, Emerald and Pokémon XD.

Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver16 level-up · 34 TM/HM · 13 egg · 10 tutor
In HeartGold and SoulSilver you can evolve the Squirtle Professor Oak gives you in Pallet Town after you defeat Red. Diamond, Pearl and Platinum have no Wartortle of their own; one migrated from a Game Boy Advance game turns up in Pal Park's Pond area. Every move now has its own physical or special category. Water Pulse and Aqua Tail join the level-up list, and Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver slot in Iron Defense at level 40, pushing Rain Dance and Hydro Pump back four levels each. Whirlpool is HM05 in HeartGold and SoulSilver only, and Water Spout is an Egg Move there only, chain-bred through Remoraid. The transfer list shows tutor moves that can only be brought over from Generation III.

Wartortle reaches Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 through Poké Transfer, or by evolving an event Squirtle. The level-up list matches Platinum's, Water Pledge is taught in all four games, and Black 2 and White 2 add a long list of tutor moves. A Wartortle evolved from the Sticker Promotional Egg or Korean Egg Squirtle keeps False Swipe, Block, Follow Me and Hydro Cannon – the ultimate Water-type attack, which no ordinary Wartortle can learn.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon16 level-up · 26 TM/HM · 16 egg · 11 tutor
Sun and Moon have no Wartortle of their own, but in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon you can evolve a Squirtle found through Island Scan in Seaward Cave on Mondays. Curiously, from Bite onwards every level-up move arrives one level later than in X and Y, so Hydro Pump now lands at 49. Water Pledge is taught in all four games; the other tutor moves are Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon only. The transfer list gathers moves from Generations I to VI that Wartortle can no longer learn here.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl14 level-up · 70 TM/HM · 22 egg · 2 tutor
In Sword and Shield (from Version 1.2.0) Wartortle appears in Wild Area News raids or arrives by trade, The Crown Tundra's Max Lair hosts it in Dynamax Adventures, and you can also evolve a Squirtle, such as the one with the Gigantamax Factor from the Master Dojo in the Expansion Pass. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, evolve a Squirtle from the Grand Underground once you have the National Pokédex. One level-up list covers both pairs of games: Wartortle now starts with Water Gun and Withdraw, Bubble is gone, Rapid Spin hits for 50, and from level 20 a new move arrives every five levels, from Protect to Shell Smash at 35 and Skull Bash at 50. Water Pledge is a Sword and Shield tutor move, and Flip Turn comes from the Expansion Pass tutor. Wartortle does not appear in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Generation IX · Scarlet & Violet (Version 3.0.0+ / The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero)14 level-up · 36 TM/HM · 9 egg
Wartortle arrives in Scarlet and Violet by trade from Version 3.0.0, or by evolving a Squirtle from the Canyon Biome in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero once the Terarium Club has boosted biodiversity there. The level-up list follows Sword and Shield, except that the 120-power Wave Crash takes Skull Bash's place as the level-50 finale. There are no move tutors in these games, and Water Spout has no breeding partner here: it can only be passed on with a Mirror Herb.

Evolve the Squirtle that Mable gives you at the Pokémon Research Lab in the Vert District during Side Mission 22, or one from Wild Zone 20 (Centrico Plaza); in the Mega Dimension expansion, wild Wartortle also live in the 3★ and 4★ Water-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose. Battles work differently here, so the tables show the level at which a move is learnt, the level at which it becomes a Plus Move, its power and its cooldown instead of accuracy and PP. Wartortle's list matches Squirtle's level for level, from Water Gun at 3 to Liquidation at 45, while Hydro Pump is a TM only and Skull Bash returns as a 150-power TM. No breeding or tutors.

Wartortle in the anime
Debut EP060Beach Blank-Out Blastoise · Its appearances on screen, and 4 other trainers who raised one.
Wartortle may be the middle child of the Squirtle family, but its anime career has been anything but quiet. A frantic wild Wartortle kicked things off in Beach Blank-Out Blastoise (EP060), dragging Ash's gang to a sleepy island to rouse a Blastoise king. From the Orange Islands on, Captain Aidan's Team Wartortle – led by a whistling Wartortle in a yellow bandana – became the yardstick for Ash's Squirtle, first as training partners and then as the champions it had to beat in the Fire and Rescue Grand Prix.
Ash never caught one, so Wartortle's biggest moments have gone to his friends. May's timid Squirtle came back from Johto as a confident Wartortle to dazzle the Wallace Cup, Tierno's dancing partner passed through the stage on its way to Blastoise, and a would-be referee called Jimmy watched his Wartortle evolve to save the day on Bomba Island. Since then it has popped up everywhere from Journeys to Horizons – and even landed a POKÉTOON short of its own.

First seen: AG133The Right Place and the Right Mime
Evolved: DP077Staging a Heroes' Welcome!
One of Professor Oak's young Squirtle took such a shine to May in Pallet Town that the Professor let her leave in May's Poké Ball instead of his (AG133). Shy and quick to cry – one Steel Wing from Drew's Flygon reduced her to tears (AG139) – she turned out to be a natural on the Contest stage, freezing Harley's Ariados's webs with Ice Beam and riding them to victory in the Saffron Contest final (AG144), then beating Jessie's borrowed Banette in sudden death at Mulberry (AG175). She evolved off-screen while May was exploring Johto, and the bolder, tear-free Wartortle made her entrance at Sinnoh's Wallace Cup: Rapid Spin sent her skimming across the water field before a brand-new Aqua Tail swept the whole stadium, winning special praise from Wallace himself and a place in the Battle Stage for May (DP077).

First seen: XY039Summer of Discovery!
Evolved: XY065Good Friends, Great Training!
Tierno's first partner from Professor Sycamore battles the way its Trainer dances, copying his moves step for step. It had quietly become a Wartortle by Good Friends, Great Training! (XY065), where it showed off its new look in a dance routine – only to be scooped into a Team Rocket cage with Tierno's Raichu and Ash's Sliggoo. Wartortle soaked Jessie and James with Water Gun, helped Sliggoo shift a giant boulder once the three were free, and then spun, Hydro Pumped and Skull Bashed its way through a Double Battle until the newly evolved Goodra caught its Skull Bash and hurled it into Raichu, and Pikachu's Thunderbolt finished it off. By Tag Team Battle Inspiration! (XY090) it was a Blastoise that had kept all its footwork, and at the Lumiose Conference it sank Sawyer's Slurpuff with Hydro Cannon before Sceptile's Frenzy Plant ended its run (XY126).

First seen: EP106The Pokémon Water War
Captain Aidan sorts his squad by evolution: Team Blastoise for the biggest blazes, Team Squirtle for tight spaces and Team Wartortle as the all-rounders, led by a whistling Wartortle in a yellow bandana. After watching them tame a warehouse fire on Ascorbia Island, Ash talked Aidan into letting Squirtle train with them; it matched the leader stride for stride and shot for shot, escaped Team Rocket's net beside it, and the pair saved a child from a burning apartment block, each rescuing the other along the way (EP106). Team Wartortle came back as reigning champions of the Fire and Rescue Grand Prix, only to lose the final race to the Squirtle Squad, led by Ash's Squirtle, in a neck-and-neck race – 3:53:00 to Team Wartortle's 3:54:02 – before saluting the winners (EP147).

First seen: AG092Judgment Day!
Evolved: AG092Judgment Day!
Jimmy was learning to referee at the Pokémon Battle Judge Training Institute on Bomba Island, with a team straight out of Kanto: Wartortle – his first partner, once a Squirtle – plus Charmeleon and Ivysaur. When Team Rocket's mecha snatched all three in the night, Jimmy was thrown aside trying to save them; determined to break free, Wartortle evolved into Blastoise, burst its cage simply by outgrowing it and freed the others with Hydro Pump. Hydro Pump, Flamethrower and Razor Leaf then blasted the trio away, and Jimmy, now sure he'd make a better Trainer than a judge, sailed back to Lilycove to restart his journey (AG092).

Ash & Wartortle
Ash has never owned a Wartortle – his Squirtle has stayed a Squirtle all along. Its closest brush with the next stage came in the Orange Islands, when it trained shoulder to shoulder with Captain Aidan's Team Wartortle (EP106) and later led the Squirtle Squad to beat them in the Fire and Rescue Grand Prix (EP147). Years later in Kalos, Ash's Pikachu and Goodra knocked out Tierno's Wartortle in a Double Battle (XY065).
Featured episodes
- EP060Beach Blank-Out BlastoiseA frantic wild Wartortle collides with Ash's group as they dash for the last ferry off Cinnabar Island and leads them to a shell-shaped island, where a colony of Squirtle and Wartortle has hidden in their shells because their Blastoise king lies on the beach and won't wake up. When Team Rocket's Gyarados sub hauls Blastoise away and starts to sink, the colony tows it back to the island, and the Turtle Pokémon's Water attacks finally wash the villains out to sea.

Anime trivia
- Before the first real Wartortle turned up, the species starred in a riddle about long life: in the Japanese version of The Ultimate Test (EP056), an exam question asked whether Ninetales live for 1,000 years and Wartortle for 10,000 – a play on the old Japanese saying that turtles live for ten thousand years. The English dub replaced it with a question about Vulpix and the Fire Stone.
- Beach Blank-Out Blastoise (EP060) completed the anime's set of every Kanto first partner and its evolutions – the quickest any generation's first partner lines have all made it on screen.
- Dub viewers met Wartortle a little early: it was the Who's That Pokémon? in The Purr-fect Hero (EP053), seven episodes before the species turned up in the story.
- Wartortle's Japanese name, Kameil, shows up in Japanese episode titles: The Pokémon Water War (EP106) is 'Firefighting Showdown! Zenigame VS Kameil', and the Japanese title of Good Friends, Great Training! (XY065) opens with 'Kameil'.
- Wartortle knows how to disappear: after May's showed up at the Wallace Cup (DP077) the species wasn't seen again for 321 episodes, until Tierno's in XY065 – and after that it vanished for another 223 episodes, returning in Legend? Go! Friends? Go! (JN002).
- May's Wartortle made history of a sort: its reveal at the Wallace Cup (DP077) marked the first time a first partner Pokémon owned by a main character had evolved off-screen.
- The two great rivals' Wartortle have never really been seen: Gary's Squirtle went all the way to Blastoise off-screen (revealed in The Ties That Bind, EP269), and in Pokémon Origins the camera cuts away just as Blue sends his Wartortle out.
- Team Wartortle's leader has trouble with its bandana: it vanishes in one shot of The Pokémon Water War (EP106) and turns burnt orange instead of yellow at the end of The Fire-ing Squad! (EP147).
“Wartortle, the Turtle Pokémon. The evolved form of Squirtle. Its long furry tail is a symbol of its age and wisdom.”

Wartortle in the movies
2 films, 2 Pikachu shorts featuring Wartortle.
Wartortle has never headlined a Pokémon film, but it has been a familiar face in the background since the very beginning. A Wartortle was at the theme park in Pikachu's Vacation, the short that opened for the first movie in 1998. Wild Wartortle feel the world going wrong in The Power of One, a racer's Wartortle lines up for the Tour de Alto Mare in Pokémon Heroes, and Trainers' Wartortle drop by in I Choose You! and Secrets of the Jungle. Its real moment in the spotlight came in 2026, when the POKÉTOON short Kameil and the Continuation of Summer cast a moss-covered, very old Wartortle as a summer friend to three generations of the same family.

Wartortle's Alto Mare outing is a sporting one. A rival racer's Wartortle is in the field for the Tour de Alto Mare, the city's annual water chariot race, in which Trainers ride floating platforms pulled by Water-type Pokémon through the canals. The glory goes elsewhere, though: Ash and Totodile crash out, and Misty's Corsola wins by the tip of its horn.

It turns out to be very old indeed, with moss growing on its shell, and long ago it played with Rikuto's father, Gaku, and his grandmother, Shuri, when they were children. That's quite a story for a Pokémon whose tail is a symbol of long life, and the credits sign off with a Wartortle-themed 30th-anniversary logo.

Wartortle in the Pokémon TCG
41 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Wartortle has been splashing about in the Pokémon TCG since the very beginning. It was in Japan's first Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reached English players in Base Set in January 1999: a 70 HP Stage 1 by Ken Sugimori that could hide in its shell with Withdraw or nip for 40 with Bite. It has never had an ex, EX, GX or V card of its own, and has no Mega form to borrow, but it has picked up some real personalities along the way. Team Rocket's Dark Wartortle sulks in its shell and hits back with Mirror Shell, the Southern Islands card is one third of a beach panorama, and the EX FireRed & LeafGreen card was that set's Prerelease promo. In 2019 Unbroken Bonds finally gave it an Ability, Solid Shell, and its HP has crept up from 60 to 100.
The artwork reads like a who's who of Pokémon illustrators. Sugimori drew it three times, including a rare e-Reader sample card for Nintendo Space World 2001, and his Base Set art came back in foil for Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic in 2023. Mitsuhiro Arita painted the FireRed & LeafGreen card and, nineteen years later, a full-art Illustration Rare for 151, while Atsuko Nishida, Midori Harada, Mizue and kantaro each added their own take. Japan has a handful of extras the rest of the world never saw, from the 1999 Intro Pack to a 2012 Gym Challenge promo, and Pokémon TCG Pocket keeps the line going with Nelnal's Genetic Apex card, a Shiny by Nisota Niso and Taiga Kasai's Crimson Blaze Wartortle, which can't be hurt by attacks while it sits on the Bench.
Cards to know
- Base Set 42/102 — Ken Sugimori's original 70 HP Wartortle. Collectors hunt the short Unlimited run whose evolution box shows Wartortle itself where Squirtle should be.
- Team Rocket 46/82 (Dark Wartortle) — A grumpy shell-dweller whose Mirror Shell pays back every point of damage it takes, even after it has been Knocked Out.
- Southern Islands 15/18 — One piece of a seaside jigsaw: put it next to Exeggutor and Slowking and the three cards become a single beach panorama.
- EX FireRed & LeafGreen 50/112 — Mitsuhiro Arita's Wartortle was the set's Prerelease card and went on to feature in a 2006 World Championships Deck.
- Unbroken Bonds 34/214 — Twenty years in, Wartortle finally got an Ability: Solid Shell knocks 20 off every attack that hits it.
- 151 171/165 — Mitsuhiro Arita came back in 2023 for a full-art Illustration Rare, nineteen years after his FireRed & LeafGreen card.

Wartortle in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
Wartortle's manga career began on the wrong side of the law. In Pokémon Adventures' 'Wartortle Wars' (1997) it is the getaway turtle for Green, who swindles Red and pinches his Badges; nicknamed Blasty, it has stayed on her team ever since as a Blastoise. Elsewhere it is Shu's mischievous catch in Yeah! I Got Pokémon!, Kamena the exam-setting big sister in Magical Pokémon Journey and Shigeru's partner in Pokémon Zensho. On the bookshelf it turns up in Scholastic's Pop Quiz, Pack Pals, Element Pokédex and chapter book ranges, and it is name-checked in both the English Pokérap and Japan's Pokémon Ieru Kana?. Its oddest outing was probably hanging around the Trevi Fountain for Google's April Fools' Pokémon hunt in 2014. And for some reason people keep getting its famous ears wrong: a quiz book and a Norwegian Pokérap CD both printed them in the wrong colour.

Wartortle trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Wartortle such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Wartortle's English name packs a lot into three syllables. There is 'water' and 'war' (or 'warrior') for a tough aquatic battler, then 'tortoise' and 'turtle' to finish it off. The Japanese name, Kamēru (trademarked as Kameil), is neater still: it joins 亀 kame, the Japanese word for a turtle or tortoise, with the English word 'tail' – the very feature that makes Wartortle famous. Several other languages play the same game: the French Carabaffe pairs a shell (carapace) with a smack (baffe), and the German Schillok mixes Schildkröte (turtle) with 'shock'.
Design origins
Wartortle was designed by Atsuko Nishida, who also created Squirtle. At heart it is a stylised turtle, but its flowing tail points to something older: the minogame, or 'straw-raincoat turtle', of Japanese legend – a turtle said to live for 10,000 years, so old that a long cloak of seaweed trails from its shell. That neatly explains Wartortle's reputation for longevity, and echoes the old Japanese saying that cranes live a thousand years and turtles ten thousand. Its habit of storing air in the fur near its tail may nod to real turtles that can take in oxygen through the cloaca, close to the base of the tail, while the curling shape of the tail itself resembles wind-blown waves.

- Wartortle, Ivysaur and Charmeleon all have a base stat total of exactly 405 – the three Kanto middle stages are perfectly matched, even if the numbers are spread differently.
- Wartortle's anime debut in Beach Blank-Out Blastoise completed the set: from that episode on, every stage of all three Kanto first-partner families had appeared in the anime.
- In Beach Blank-Out Blastoise, Misty points out that people have searched for Wartortle breeding grounds for years, and the island the heroes find may be one.
- Its 'said to live 10,000 years' Pokédex entry is its most recycled, appearing in ten games from Diamond and Pearl to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
- The Yellow entry about it pulling its head in when tapped has had a long life too: X reused it, Let's Go reworded it, and Legends: Z-A brought it back.
- In one piece of promotional art for the original anime series, Wartortle's feathery ears were mistakenly coloured the same as its skin.
- In Generation II, the Squirtle family were the only Pokémon that learned Skull Bash by levelling up; every other Pokémon had to pick it up through breeding.
- A Wartortle traded from Red, Blue or Yellow into Gold, Silver or Crystal always arrives holding a Bitter Berry.
- Wartortle is name-checked in Super Smash Bros.: Squirtle's Melee trophy explains that it evolves into Wartortle and then Blastoise.
- In Pokémon Origins, Blue is about to send out his Wartortle in File 2, but the scene cuts away before it leaves its Poké Ball – and by File 4 it has become Blastoise.
- The Orange Islands anime Pokédex calls Wartortle a highly sought-after Pokémon, because its fur-covered tail is said to bring good luck.
- Its first card, Base Set Wartortle, was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, and both of its attacks, Withdraw and Bite, are moves Wartortle can learn in the games.
- Base Set Wartortle was printed in the prototype Trainer Deck B before the Base Set itself was released.
- In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, Wartortle puts its long life down to one thing: taking good care of its tail.
- In Pokémon Sleep it dozes tucked inside its shell but leaves its fluffy tail sticking out, perhaps to feel out its surroundings while it rests.
- Pokémon Pokopia reveals its tastes: humid habitats, spicy flavours, and a love of lots of water, cleanliness, healing, exercise and hard stuff.
- In a POKÉTOON short, an elderly Wartortle with moss on its shell turns out to have known two of the characters since they were children.
