EX Holon Phantoms is the thirteenth expansion of the EX Series, released on May 3rd, 2006 and known in Japan as Holon Phantom. An 111-card set, it takes one last, deep trip into the mysterious Holon region — and, under its moody tagline “Where shadows fall, phantoms dwell,” it hides some of the most coveted cards the hobby has ever seen.
The set keeps the δ Delta Species idea rolling — off-type Pokémon born of Holon’s experiments — alongside the dual-purpose Holon’s Pokémon that double as Energy. A small line of Pokémon-ex (Crawdaunt ex, Mew ex and Mightyena ex) rounds out the top end.
But the reason collectors still chase Holon Phantoms boxes today is its Gold Stars: this single set is home to a shiny Pikachu Star, a shiny Mewtwo Star and a shiny Gyarados Star — three of the most famous chase cards of the entire era.
Two theme decks shipped alongside it, FireMist (Fire/Fighting) and FloodRush (Water/Psychic). It’s a set defined less by its commons and more by the phantoms glittering somewhere deep in the box — so let’s talk about those.
Where shadows fall, phantoms dwell.
Venture into the Holon region and uncover its rarest secrets — if you can find them.
— Original Pokémon USA promotional copy, 2006
Gold Star Grails: Home of Pikachu ★ and Mewtwo ★
By 2006, the EX era had a signature ultra-rarity: the Gold Star. Marked with a small gold ★ beside the name, these were shiny, alternate-coloured versions of familiar Pokémon — the card game’s answer to running into a shiny in the video games. They were brutally scarce, roughly one per booster box, and their partial, border-breaking artwork made them instantly desirable. For a lot of collectors, Gold Stars are the chase of the whole EX run.
And EX Holon Phantoms is arguably their high-water mark. It doesn’t just have Gold Stars — it has two of the most iconic ever printed. Pikachu Star (104) is a shiny black-and-gold take on the franchise mascot, a genuine grail that collectors spend years hunting. Right alongside it sits Mewtwo Star (103), the shiny genetic legendary, every bit as coveted. Add the striking red Gyarados Star (102) and you have three of the era’s most-wanted cards in a single expansion.
It’s the perfect fit for a set called Phantoms. Pull a whole box and you might never see one; crack the right pack and a shiny apparition slides out, border-to-border foil catching the light. That thrill — the ghost in the box you can hunt but rarely catch — is exactly what makes Holon Phantoms one of the most exciting vintage boxes to open, even now.
Print Versions & Collectors Info
Boosters came in four artwork variants — Mewtwo, Gyarados, Kabutops and Zangoose — each holding nine cards. Two theme decks, FireMist and FloodRush, rounded out the release, with the famous Gold Stars falling at roughly one per booster box.

Other Cards
Beyond the headline chase, the set’s Holon machinery is on show — including the clever cards that blur the line between Pokémon and Energy.
Holon’s Castform (44/110)
One of the “Holon’s Pokémon” that can be played as either a Pokémon or an Energy — a flexible little building block that let Delta Species decks squeeze extra value out of every card slot.
Mew (111/110)
An extra Mew tucked right at the end of the checklist — a lovely, low-key grab that ties this Holon set back to the Mew mystery of the expansion before it.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
This is one of the great chase sets of the era — three iconic Gold Stars leading a compact but desirable line-up.
Pikachu Star (104/110)
A grail. The shiny black-and-gold mascot is one of the most famous — and most hunted — Gold Stars ever printed, and comfortably the card of the set.
Mewtwo Star (103/110)
The shiny genetic legendary as a Gold Star — every bit as coveted as its Pikachu stablemate and a centrepiece of any EX-era collection.
Gyarados Star (102/110)
A striking red shiny Gyarados, the third of the set’s Gold Stars and a stunning display card in its own right.
Mew ex (100/110)
The mythical returns as an ex, peeking at your opponent’s hand from the Bench — the pick of the set’s small ex line.
Crawdaunt ex (99/110)
A disruptive Water ex that bounces your opponent’s Bench back to their hand — a characterful and collectable card.
Mightyena ex (101/110)
The Dark hound as an ex, rounding out the trio of Pokémon-ex at the top of the set.
Mewtwo δ (24/110)
A Delta Species Mewtwo in an off-type — a popular non-Star Mewtwo that also appeared as a special stamped promo.
Deoxys (3/110)
The DNA Pokémon appears again in Holon, one of several Deoxys cards keeping the region’s legendary presence alive.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
For a chase-driven set, Holon Phantoms still packed some genuine disruption and tempo tools.
Mew ex (100/110)
Psychic Vision lets it scout your opponent’s hand from the Bench, and Devo Crush strips Energy on the attack — a flexible psychic with real utility.
Crawdaunt ex (99/110)
Splash Back returns an opponent’s Benched Pokémon — and everything on it — to their hand, undoing a careful set-up in a single move.
Mewtwo Star (103/110)
Not just a collector’s piece: it refuels from the discard and its Psychic Star can strip an Evolved Pokémon of all its Energy in one hit.
Gyarados Star (102/110)
Spiral Growth loads Energy straight from the discard on a coin-flip chain, powering up a big All-out Blast — a shiny that could actually swing games.
Trivia
- The set is home to three of the era’s most iconic Gold Stars: the shiny Pikachu Star, Mewtwo Star and Gyarados Star — with Pikachu Star among the most sought-after cards in all of vintage Pokémon.
- Gold Stars fell at roughly one per booster box, making a complete Holon Phantoms Gold Star run a serious collecting feat.
- It continues the δ Delta Species and Holon storyline, including the dual-purpose Holon’s Pokémon that can be played as a Pokémon or an Energy.
- Its atmospheric tagline — “Where shadows fall, phantoms dwell” — leans into the mysterious, ghost-in-the-box feel of hunting its rarest cards.
- In Japan the set was titled simply Holon Phantom, and it was one of the smaller Japanese releases at just 52 cards.
- Two theme decks shipped alongside it: FireMist (Fire/Fighting) and FloodRush (Water/Psychic).
