Rising Rivals, the second set of the Platinum series, arrived in May 2009 and turned the spotlight onto people. Where Platinum had introduced Team Galactic’s Pokémon SP, Rising Rivals handed the SP treatment to the heroes and rivals of the Sinnoh League — the region’s Gym Leaders and its Elite Four.
The result was a 120-card set threaded with famous trainers: Pokémon GL (a Gym Leader’s Pokémon) and Pokémon 4 (an Elite Four member’s), backed by a run of Supporter cards named for the trainers themselves. Add nine Pokémon LV.X, most of the Eevee family, and a trio of collectible Pikachu, and Rising Rivals lived up to its name.
It starts, appropriately, with the trainers who gave the set its identity.
The Greater Your Power, the Greater Your Rivals!
Capture awesome Pokémon LV.X… Challenge Gym Leaders… Rise to the level of the Elite Four… and discover the elite Trainer in yourself! The Pokémon TCG: Platinum—Rising Rivals expansion brings powerful Trainers and amazing Pokémon together in new and exciting ways, expanding your game play strategies. By pitting Trainer against Trainer and Pokémon against Pokémon in battles that will rival even your most exciting encounters, Rising Rivals will raise you to the top of your game!
— official Rising Rivals expansion blurb
Gym Leaders and the Elite Four
Rising Rivals split its Pokémon SP into two new families. Pokémon GL cards belonged to Sinnoh’s Gym Leaders; Pokémon 4 cards belonged to the four members of the Elite Four. Alongside them came a set of Supporters — Volkner’s Philosophy, Flint’s Willpower, Lucian’s Assignment, Bertha’s Warmth and Aaron’s Collection — each named for the trainer who inspired it, so you could quite literally build a deck around your favourite League opponent.
The undisputed star was Luxray GL LV.X (109), Gym Leader Volkner’s signature Pokémon. Its Bright Look Poké-Power let it reach across the table and drag one of your opponent’s Benched Pokémon into the Active spot the moment it levelled up — pulling a defenceless target into the open to be Knocked Out. Bright Look went on to define the SP-dominated metagame for years, anchoring the famous “LuxChomp” decks.
The Elite Four answered with Infernape 4 LV.X (108), Flint’s fiery bruiser. Its Intimidating Roar forced your opponent to shuffle their own Active Pokémon back and send up a Benched one, scrambling their board, before Fire Spin came down for a hard 100 damage.
Luxray GL LV.X (109/111)
Gym Leader Volkner’s signature Pokémon, and the card that defined the SP era. Bright Look drags a Benched Pokémon into the Active spot the instant it levels up — the free “gust” at the heart of LuxChomp.
Infernape 4 LV.X (108/111)
Elite Four Flint’s ace. Intimidating Roar forces your opponent to switch their own Active Pokémon, scrambling their plan, and Fire Spin follows up for a heavy 100 damage.
Print Versions
Rising Rivals shipped in four booster arts — Houndoom, Leafeon, Scizor and Rotom. Every pack was a shot at one of the set’s nine Pokémon LV.X, or, rarer still, one of the three Pikachu hidden in its secret slots.

If that player searched his or her deck, the player shuffles his or her deck afterward. |

Nine Pokémon LV.X
Nine Pokémon LV.X is a generous haul for a single set, and Rising Rivals used them to show off both raw power and clever tech.
Flygon LV.X (105) was a specialist. Its Wind Erosion Poké-Body quietly milled a card off the top of your opponent’s deck every turn it stayed Active, while Extreme Attack reached out to deal a flat 150 damage to any of your opponent’s Pokémon LV.X — enough to erase most of them in a single blow, a pointed answer to the LV.X-heavy decks of the day.
Gallade 4 LV.X (106), with the Elite Four’s Lucian at the helm, played a spread game. Blade Storm sprinkled a damage counter onto every one of your opponent’s Pokémon the moment it levelled up, and Aimed Cut then hit for 40 plus 10 more for each counter already on the target — softening the whole board, then cashing in.
Flygon LV.X (105/111)
A precision counter. Wind Erosion mills the opponent’s deck each turn, and Extreme Attack deals a flat 150 to any Pokémon LV.X — a clean answer to the era’s LV.X-heavy decks.
Gallade 4 LV.X (106/111)
Elite Four Lucian’s blade. Blade Storm drops a damage counter on every opposing Pokémon on level-up, and Aimed Cut hits for 40 plus 10 per counter already there.
The Eevee Family and Three Pikachu
Rising Rivals is a set collectors remember fondly, and not only for its LV.X. Six members of the Eevee family turn up across the set — Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Glaceon and Leafeon — leaving only Umbreon on the sidelines, alongside Eevee itself. For anyone chasing the whole evolutionary fan, it was an unusually rich single set.
And tucked into the very last slots were three secret-rare Pikachu: a standard Pikachu (112) plus the fan-favourite Flying Pikachu (113) and Surfing Pikachu (114), nostalgic nods to two of the most beloved special Pikachu in the game’s history. They remain among the set’s most sought-after pulls.
Leafeon (45/111)
One of six Eeveelutions gathered in Rising Rivals — the Grass-type evolution introduced in the Sinnoh games. Only Umbreon is missing from the family here.
Surfing Pikachu (114/111)
A secret-rare revival of one of the most beloved special Pikachu ever printed, riding a wave at the very end of the set — a pure collector’s trophy.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Rising Rivals is defined by its nine Lv.X chase cards (#103-111), the tail end of the beloved Platinum ‘SP’ era. Luxray GL Lv.X is the signature pull, but scarce, notoriously hard-to-grade Flygon and Snorlax Lv.X actually top it in PSA 10. Secret-rare Rotom formes round out collector demand.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Rising Rivals arrived at the peak of the SP archetype and its cards shaped the 2009-2010 Modified metagame. Its Lv.X SP Pokemon powered LuxChomp and LuxApe, decks that dominated Nationals and Worlds, all fueled by the format-warping SP Energy.
Luxray GL Lv.X (LuxChomp backbone / Bright Look)
Its Bright Look Poke-Power dragged a benched Pokemon into the Active spot to be picked off, making it the gust engine at the heart of the dominant LuxChomp and LuxApe decks.
SP Energy (Universal SP fuel engine)
This special energy supplied any type for Pokemon SP, letting toolbox SP decks run wildly different attackers off one energy line-the glue that held the entire format together.
Infernape 4 Lv.X (LuxApe attacker / Flare Blitz)
Paired with Luxray in LuxApe, it acted as the hard-hitting Fire finisher, using Flare Blitz for big energy-accelerated damage to close out prize races.
Gallade 4 Lv.X (SP heavy hitter / Psychic Cut)
A splashable SP attacker whose Psychic Cut struck for a hefty 100, teching into LuxChomp and Gallade SP builds to punish high-HP threats.
Flygon Lv.X (Flygon spread deck anchor)
Its passive spread damage anchored the Flygon/Dusknoir ‘spread’ archetype, chipping the opponent’s whole board toward simultaneous knockouts.
