Fusion Strike booster pack

Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield—Fusion Strike launched on 12 November 2021 as the eighth main Sword & Shield expansion — and, at 264 cards in the base set (284 including secret rares), the largest single English set the series had produced to that point. It is built around a brand-new idea, the Fusion Strike Battle Style, and its face card — the heart of the whole set — is Mew VMAX.

Fusion Strike joined the Single Strike and Rapid Strike styles introduced earlier in 2021’s Battle Styles, completing the trio. Where those two were about raw power and spread damage, Fusion Strike is about flexibility and synergy — decks that grow stronger and more consistent the more Fusion Strike pieces you assemble. The set also marked a milestone off the table: Fusion Strike booster packs were the first English packs to include a code card for the Pokémon TCG Live app. The Japanese counterpart, Fusion Arts (S8), had arrived on 24 September 2021.

Styles Combine in a New Strategy! The road ahead reveals limitless potential as the new Fusion Strike style emerges to harness the unbound spirit of Pokémon and Trainers alike—led by adaptable new Pokémon like Genesect V, Hoopa V, and Mew VMAX!

Set Highlights: The Mew Set

If one card defines Fusion Strike, it is Mew VMAX. It fronts the Elite Trainer Box, a booster wrapper and the set’s whole marketing campaign — and its alternate-art secret (269/264) became one of the most beloved chase cards of the era. Alongside it, the set is stacked with gorgeous alternate-art secret rares, headlined by the Gengar VMAX (271/264), the single most valuable card in the set.

The Fusion Strike Battle Style

Fusion Strike is the third and final Battle Style of the Sword & Shield era. A Fusion Strike Pokémon is not defined by one signature trick the way Single Strike (big single hits) or Rapid Strike (spread damage) are — instead, the style rewards building your whole deck around it, with pieces that scale up as your Fusion Strike board grows.

The glue is Fusion Strike Energy, a Special Energy that provides one Energy of any type and makes the Pokémon it is attached to immune to the effects of your opponent’s Abilities — quietly one of the most important lines of text in the format, switching off the disruptive abilities that would otherwise wreck the deck. Power Tablet, an Item, adds +30 damage to a Fusion Strike attack with no limit on how many you play in a turn, so four of them means +120.

Two cards turned all of this into the defining deck of the set. Genesect V‘s “Fusion Strike System” Ability lets you draw cards until your hand equals the number of Fusion Strike Pokémon you have in play — a draw engine that scales with your board and can be fired from every Genesect V you have out. Mew VMAX‘s “Cross Fusion Strike” copies the attack of any of your Benched Fusion Strike Pokémon, so a bulky, zero-retreat Mew VMAX can unleash Genesect V’s 210-damage Techno Blast while the fragile Genesect sit safely on the Bench. Add Power Tablets to punch past knockout thresholds, and you have the deck players simply called “Mew box”.

Fusion Strike was a standard main-set release — booster packs, a booster box, an Elite Trainer Box and a Build & Battle Box — rather than the collection-box-heavy lineup of a special set. Every pack holds 10 cards plus a basic Energy and, for the first time in an English set, a Pokémon TCG Live code card, and shipped in four different wrapper artworks.

The Elite Trainer Box was Mew-themed; a Build & Battle Box (later bundled two-to-a-box as a Build & Battle Stadium) gave players a prerelease-style experience. A year later the set’s signature deck returned as the ready-to-play Mew VMAX League Battle Deck.

English version vs. Japanese Variations

Fusion Strike’s Japanese counterpart, Fusion Arts (S8), released on 24 September 2021 — a roughly 100-card set (about 128 with secret rares) sold in boxes of 30 five-card packs. As usual for the era, the English Fusion Strike combined Fusion Arts with additional content to reach its huge 264-card base set. Both share the same chase cards, with Japan’s “SA” (Special Art) Mew VMAX, Mew V and Genesect V mirroring the English alternate arts.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Fusion Strike is a set where the value is concentrated almost entirely in its alternate-art secret rares — the full-body “character rare”-style illustrations numbered above the base set. These four are the cards collectors chase.

Gengar VMAX — Alternate Art (271/264)

Gengar VMAX — Alternate Art (271/264)

The crown jewel of Fusion Strike and one of the most valuable modern Pokémon cards, period. This full-body alternate art shows Gengar looming over a moonlit street, and gem-mint copies have traded well into the hundreds — and, graded, the thousands — of dollars. It is the card that defines the set’s reputation as a chase-heavy expansion.

Mew VMAX — Alternate Art (269/264)

Mew VMAX — Alternate Art (269/264)

The set’s most iconic pull. Mew VMAX’s alternate art places a playful Mew in a soft pink dreamscape, and as the face of the whole set it is the card most people picture when they think of Fusion Strike. A perennial favourite that has held its value strongly.

Mew V — Alternate Art (251/264)

Mew V — Alternate Art (251/264)

A beloved “character rare” that pairs Mew with a young Trainer in a quiet, storybook scene. Unusually for a headline chase card it sits inside the main set rather than the secret range, and it remains one of the most recognisable illustrations of the era.

Espeon VMAX — Alternate Art (270/264)

Espeon VMAX — Alternate Art (270/264)

Rounding out the set’s most-wanted quartet, the Espeon VMAX alternate art is a serene, sunlit illustration that is a firm favourite among Eeveelution collectors and a strong chase card in its own right.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Fusion Strike did not just introduce a mechanic — it produced “Mew box”, one of the most consistent and enduring decks in the game’s history. Three cards did the heavy lifting.

Mew VMAX (114/264) — the attacker

Mew VMAX (114/264) — the attacker

The centrepiece of the deck. “Cross Fusion Strike” copies the attack of any of your Benched Fusion Strike Pokémon — almost always Genesect V’s 210-damage Techno Blast — from a bulky, zero-retreat body. Mew VMAX soaks up hits and keeps swinging while the fragile Genesect stay safe on the Bench.

Genesect V (185/264) — the engine

Genesect V (185/264) — the engine

The draw engine that made the whole thing tick. “Fusion Strike System” lets you draw cards until your hand equals the number of Fusion Strike Pokémon you have in play, and because you can fire it from every Genesect V on your board, it is one of the strongest, most reliable consistency engines the format ever saw.

Power Tablet (236/264) — the finisher

Power Tablet (236/264) — the finisher

Each Power Tablet adds +30 damage to a Fusion Strike attack, with no limit on how many you play in a turn. That extra reach — three or four Tablets stacked onto a copied Techno Blast — is what let Mew VMAX punch straight through an opposing VMAX in a single turn.

Trivia

  • At 264 base cards (284 with secret rares), Fusion Strike was the largest single English Sword & Shield expansion released to that point.
  • Its booster packs were the first English packs to carry a code card for the then-new Pokémon TCG Live app.
  • Fusion Strike completed the trio of Battle Styles, joining Single Strike and Rapid Strike from the earlier Battle Styles set.
  • The Gengar VMAX alternate art (271/264) is the set’s most valuable card; the Mew VMAX alternate art (269/264) is its most iconic.
  • Fusion Strike Energy’s ability-immunity clause made it a defensive staple in decks well beyond the Mew archetype.
  • The Mew VMAX / Genesect V deck was popular enough that it returned a year later as an official Mew VMAX League Battle Deck (November 2022).
