Platinum did something the Pokémon TCG hadn’t done in a while: it began a brand-new series. Released in February 2009 as the lead set of the Platinum series, its 133 cards drew on the third-version Sinnoh game, Pokémon Platinum — and they carried a mechanic that would reshape competitive play for the next two years.
That mechanic was Pokémon SP: special Basic Pokémon owned by specific characters, marked with their trainer’s portrait. The first wave — Team Galactic’s “Pokémon G” — arrived alongside a suite of “Team Galactic’s Invention” Trainer cards built to support them. Add six Pokémon LV.X, the debut of the Lost Zone, and the newly discovered Shaymin and Giratina, and Platinum amounted to a genuine reset button.
Let’s start with the idea that changed everything.
New Worlds, New Battles!
The Platinum expansion swept the world of Pokémon Platinum onto the tabletop — introducing Pokémon SP and the villains of Team Galactic, reviving Pokémon LV.X, unveiling the newly discovered Shaymin and Giratina, and opening the door to the mysterious Lost Zone, a place from which cards can never return.
— the Platinum expansion premise
The Dawn of Pokémon SP
Pokémon SP were Basic Pokémon that belonged to a specific character — you could tell at a glance from the little portrait tucked into the card’s frame. The first group, “Pokémon G,” belonged to the villainous Team Galactic, and their flagship was Dialga G LV.X (122). Its Time Crystal Poké-Body switched off every non-SP Pokémon’s Poké-Body, while Remove Lost stripped Energy straight into the Lost Zone — a taste of the disruptive, resource-denying style SP decks would come to be known for.
If one card defined the SP era, though, it was Crobat G (47). Its Flash Bite Poké-Power did something deceptively simple: the moment you played Crobat G onto your Bench, you could drop a damage counter on any of your opponent’s Pokémon — for free, with no Energy and no attack. For years afterward, decks of every stripe ran a Crobat G or two purely to nudge Pokémon into KO range. Few cards have ever been so quietly universal.
Backing them up were the Team Galactic’s Invention Trainers, and the most feared was Power Spray (117). Held in hand and sprung during your opponent’s turn, it could cancel a Poké-Power the instant it was used — a brutal piece of interruption in a format increasingly built on Poké-Power engines.
Dialga G LV.X (122/127)
The flagship of Team Galactic’s Pokémon G. Time Crystal shuts off every non-SP Poké-Body, and Remove Lost peels Energy off the Defending Pokémon and banishes it to the Lost Zone.
Crobat G (47/127)
The most universal card of its era. Flash Bite drops a free damage counter on any opposing Pokémon the moment Crobat G hits your Bench — no Energy, no attack, just constant KO-range pressure.
Power Spray (117/127)
A Team Galactic’s Invention that turned games on their head. Played from hand during the opponent’s turn, it cancels a Poké-Power the instant it’s used — punishing the Poké-Power engines the format was built on.
Print Versions
Platinum shipped in four booster arts, led by the box legendaries Giratina, Dialga and Palkia alongside the newly discovered Shaymin. Every pack was a chance at one of the set’s six Pokémon LV.X — or, deeper still, a retro secret rare or a Shiny.

Six Pokémon LV.X
Platinum brought Pokémon LV.X back in force, with six of them — Dialga G, Drapion, Giratina, Palkia G and two versions of Shaymin. Two in particular showed off the set’s new toys.
Giratina LV.X (124) was the face of the Lost Zone. Its Invisible Tentacles Poké-Body forced your opponent to discard a card every time they wanted to attack — and if they couldn’t, they simply couldn’t attack — while Darkness Lost spread 30 damage across their whole team and banished anything it Knocked Out to the Lost Zone, gone for good.
Shaymin LV.X (126), in its Land Forme, took the opposite tack. Its Thankfulness Poké-Body handed every one of your Grass Pokémon a 40-HP cushion, and Seed Flare let you pour Grass Energy out of your hand and onto your team as it attacked — a build-around engine for green decks.
Giratina LV.X (124/127)
The face of the Lost Zone. Invisible Tentacles taxes every enemy attack a card from hand, and Darkness Lost hits the whole Bench for 30 — sending anything it Knocks Out to the Lost Zone, never to return.
Shaymin LV.X (126/127)
Land Forme Shaymin, and a Grass-deck cornerstone. Thankfulness gives all your Grass Pokémon +40 HP, while Seed Flare loads Energy from your hand as it attacks.
Base Set Returns, and More Shinies
Following the trail Stormfront blazed, Platinum tucked another round of Base Set tributes into its secret slots — Electabuzz, Hitmonchan and Scyther (128–130), redrawn with their classic Ken Sugimori artwork. Hitmonchan (129) is a near-perfect throwback, right down to its 20-damage Jab and its Special Punch.
And the Shiny Pokémon subset carried on too. Numbered SH4 through SH6, alternate-coloured Lotad, Swablu and Vulpix continued the run Stormfront had begun at SH1 — the rarest and most quietly coveted pulls in the set.
Hitmonchan (129/127)
A secret-rare love letter to the 1999 Base Set classic, redrawn in a modern frame but keeping the original Ken Sugimori art and its familiar Jab and Special Punch.
Shiny Vulpix (SH6)
One of three Shiny secret cards — alternate-coloured Lotad, Swablu and Vulpix — extending the Shiny subset that began in Stormfront. A shiny-hunter’s dream pull.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Platinum’s value is anchored by its six Lv.X cards, led by the iconic Shaymin Lv.X Sky Forme (#127), the set’s marquee chase. Three throwback secret rares (Electabuzz, Hitmonchan, Scyther, #128-130) cap the set. Raw copies stay cheap, but scarce PSA 10 Lv.X gems reach four and five figures.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
Platinum reshaped 2009 Modified by introducing Pokemon SP and the ‘SP toolbox’ Trainers that powered the format’s dominant SP archetypes (DialgaChomp, then Luxchomp). Cheap, reusable engine and disruption cards made SP decks the most consistent option for years.
Trivia
- Platinum was the first set of the Platinum series; the English release drew from Japan’s “Galactic’s Conquest.”
- It introduced Pokémon SP — special Basic Pokémon owned by characters — beginning with Team Galactic’s Pokémon G.
- The set debuted the Lost Zone, a new out-of-play area from which cards can never return.
- Crobat G’s free damage counter made it one of the most widely played cards of its entire era.
- Its secret rares — Electabuzz, Hitmonchan and Scyther — revived Base Set artwork, and three more Shiny Pokémon (SH4–SH6) continued Stormfront’s Shiny run.
