Guardians Rising booster box

If the Sun & Moon Base Set was the era finding its feet, Guardians Rising is where it hit its stride. Released in May 2017 as the second Sun & Moon expansion, it took the still-new GX mechanic and stacked the set with a genuinely deep, playable line-up — and it dropped in one card that would quietly become the most important printing of the entire era.

The theme is the Tapu, Alola’s four island-guardian deities, who arrive in the TCG here for the first time. Chief among them is Tapu Lele-GX, a card so useful that it wormed its way into very nearly every competitive deck for years — the kind of card players stopped thinking of as a choice and started treating as a cost of doing business. More on why below.

Around it sits a strong supporting cast: Metagross-GX and its self-fuelling metal engine, the gusting menace of Lycanroc-GX, the toolbox tricks of Sylveon-GX, and a full rainbow-rare ladder topped by some of the era’s most admired art. For collectors there are Full Art GX and Supporters, Rainbow “Hyper” Rares, and gold secret Trainers and Energy to chase.

Reception was warm and has aged well: Guardians Rising is widely remembered as one of the stronger, more consequential Sun & Moon sets — the point where the era’s competitive identity really clicked into place.

Set Highlights: The Island Guardians Arrive

Tapu Koko-GX 47/145Tapu Lele-GX 60/145

Alola’s guardian deities arrive. Guardians Rising takes its name from the island guardians of the Sun & Moon games, and it brought the first two — Tapu Koko-GX (47/145) and Tapu Lele-GX (60/145) — to the Pokémon TCG as Pokémon-GX. (Tapu Bulu and Tapu Fini would arrive in later Sun & Moon expansions to complete the quartet.) As the first main set to follow the Sun & Moon Base Set, it leaned hard into the Alola setting the 2016 games had introduced.

Tapu Lele-GX was the card of the era. If you played competitively in 2017, Tapu Lele-GX (60/145) was the card — arguably the most format-warping single of the entire Sun & Moon run. Its Wonder Tag Ability let you search your deck for any Supporter the instant it hit the Bench, turning what used to be a gamble into a guarantee. It slotted into virtually every serious deck for years, quietly bending deckbuilding around itself, and stayed a pricey chase single long after it rotated out.

A deep set beyond the guardians. Guardians Rising also delivered Gardevoir-GX, which anchored one of 2017’s premier decks, alongside Metagross-GX, Lycanroc-GX and a stunning Rainbow-rare Sylveon-GX. Its Elite Trainer Box and the Tapu-themed collection boxes were hot pickups as players raced to add the new guardians to their decks.

Collector spotlight: the Island Guardians-GX Premium Collection. No product captured this era’s love of the Tapus quite like the later Island Guardians-GX Premium Collection — a lavish box that bundled promo versions of all four guardians (Tapu Koko, Lele, Bulu and Fini) with a matching set of collector pins. It isn’t strictly a Guardians Rising product, but it’s the definitive shelf-piece for anyone who fell for the deities this set introduced.

Guardians Rising Tapu Koko Elite Trainer Box

Guardians Rising boosters held the standard ten cards (plus a code card for the online game), and the English set shipped with four booster wrapper artworks — Tapu Koko, Lycanroc, Alolan Ninetales and Kommo-o. A 36-pack booster box sat at the top of the range, with a Tapu Koko Elite Trainer Box (eight packs, 65 matching sleeves, 45 Energy, dice, markers and a player’s guide) as the collector-friendly option.

Two theme decks gave newcomers a way in: Steel Sun, built around Metagross and Solgaleo, and Hidden Moon, a Psychic/Fire brew. As a modern set there’s no “1st Edition” stamp — every copy is unlimited print — and while it’s long gone from shelves, singles remain easy to track down on the secondary market.

Variations between the Japanese and English language releases

Like every main Sun & Moon expansion, the English Guardians Rising is a merger rather than a translation. In Japan it arrived on 17 March 2017 — nearly two months ahead of the West — as a pair of 50-card “dual” sets, Islands Await You (SM2K) and Alolan Moonlight (SM2L), topped up with cards from the Japanese “Sun & Moon” subset and the Rockruff-GX starter deck.

The Pokémon Company folded all of that into one larger English set of 145 cards (169 with secret rares), against roughly 124 across the Japanese releases. As always the numbering doesn’t line up between regions, and the English set is the bigger of the two.

Set List

The 169-card checklist runs 1–145 for the main set (Full Arts occupy 131–145), then 146–169 for the secret rares — the Rainbow Rares and gold Trainer/Energy cards. Trainer and Energy cards carry no Energy type.

Other Cards

Plenty of Guardians Rising-era cards live outside the numbered set:

Promos. The island-guardian theme spilled into a run of SM Black Star Promos: the chase Tapu Koko (SM30 / SM31) from the Tapu Koko Figure Collection and Pin Collection, plus Tapu Koko-GX (SM33) and Tapu Bulu-GX (SM32) in the Island Guardians tins. Around them sat prerelease promos Alolan Sandslash (SM18), Oricorio (SM19), Mudsdale (SM20) and Drampa (SM21), and blister promos Lurantis (SM25), Tsareena (SM26), Turtonator (SM27) and Vikavolt (SM28). None carry a /145 number.

Theme-deck cards. The two theme decks — Steel Sun (Metal/Psychic) and Hidden Moon (Psychic/Fire) — were mostly base-set reprints, each headlined by an alternate-art holo Solgaleo or Lunala, with Dhelmise and Mimikyu as deck standouts.

Japanese-only cards. Because the English set is a superset of Islands Await You and Alolan Moonlight (plus subset cards), the regions never line up card-for-card — a handful of Japanese prints landed in the West only in later Sun & Moon sets.

For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards

Two different value stories run through this set: the card everyone wants, and the cards that happen to be rarest. They don’t perfectly overlap, so we’ll separate them — and as always, values move, so check live sold and graded comps for the exact card and variant.

Tapu Lele-GX (60 / FA 137 / Rainbow 155)

Tapu Lele-GX (60 / FA 137 / Rainbow 155)

The most famous card in the set by a mile, wanted in every finish — regular, Full Art and Rainbow. Because it saw play in almost everything (see below), demand has stayed remarkably durable. If a collector says “Guardians Rising,” this is usually the card they picture.

Sylveon-GX — Rainbow Secret Rare (158)

Sylveon-GX — Rainbow Secret Rare (158)

On pure price, the rainbow Sylveon-GX is often the set’s top card — an Eeveelution, a striking Fairy-type rainbow finish, and a perennial collector target. Its Full Art (134) is a strong secondary chase.

Metagross-GX

Metagross-GX

A mid-tier chase that punches above its weight thanks to its tournament pedigree. The Full Art and Rainbow versions are the ones to want; the regular is affordable and still a great-looking holo.

Condition is everything on the rainbow and full-art cards — the textured foil shows whitening and scratches readily, so clean high grades are scarcer than the print run suggests.

Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)

Tapu Lele-GX (60/145) — the card that defined an era

Tapu Lele-GX (60/145) — the card that defined an era

It’s hard to overstate this one. Tapu Lele-GX’s Wonder Tag Ability — not a GX attack, note, but an Ability — let you search your deck for any Supporter and put it into your hand the moment you benched it. With the previous consistency engine (Shaymin-EX) newly rotated out, that on-demand tutoring filled the gap and then some: need the perfect N, a Guzma or a Professor Sycamore right now? Bench a Tapu Lele-GX. Its colourless Energy Drive attack meant it could even swing in a pinch in any deck. The verdict of the day summed it up: there’s no deck that can’t play Tapu Lele-GX. It became a near-universal one-or-two-of for its entire legality window.

Metagross-GX (85/145)

Metagross-GX (85/145)

A genuine top-tier deck on its own. Geotech System attached a Metal Energy from hand every turn (and healed Metagross when it did), giving the Metagross/Solgaleo-GX archetype a self-contained acceleration-and-healing engine that ground opponents down.

Lycanroc-GX (74/145)

Lycanroc-GX (74/145)

The gust artist. Bloodthirsty Eyes dragged a Benched Pokémon into the Active spot on evolution, letting you pick off the target you wanted — a backbone of the Lycanroc-GX / Zoroark-GX and Lycanroc / Buzzwole decks that ruled 2017–18.

Sylveon-GX (92/145)

Sylveon-GX (92/145)

A control-leaning toolbox. Magical Ribbon dug three cards out of your deck for a single Fairy Energy, while the Plea-GX attack bounced two of the opponent’s Benched Pokémon — and everything on them — back to hand, a brutal tempo swing.

Honourable mention to the non-GX Vikavolt, whose Strong Charge Ability accelerated Grass and Lightning Energy and powered the Vikavolt / Tapu Bulu-GX decks.

One card to keep straight: the famous splashable Tapu Koko that spread damage across the whole Bench is the SM30 promo, handed out around the same time — not part of this set. Guardians Rising contains Tapu Koko-GX (#47), a different, chunkier card.

Trivia & Pop Culture

Where the era clicked. Collectors and players alike tend to rate Guardians Rising well above the base set that preceded it. The base set introduced GX; Guardians Rising is where the mechanic got the deck-defining cards that made the format sing.

The Shaymin-EX vacuum. Tapu Lele-GX didn’t arrive in a bubble — it landed just as the old draw-engine Shaymin-EX rotated out of Standard. It slotted straight into that hole and quietly became the most format-defining card of the Sun & Moon years.

Guardians of Alola. The set leans hard into the island-guardian mythology, and it’s a clean hook: four regional deities, one very good Psychic fairy, and a lot of binder-worthy rainbow art. Most of the era’s GX renders, Tapu Lele-GX included, came from the digital studio 5ban Graphics.

The next set, Burning Shadows, would keep the momentum going with Gardevoir-GX and a certain fire-breathing chase card.
