01Overview

Meet Victreebel

Everything you need to know about the Flycatcher Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Meet Victreebel, the Flycatcher Pokémon – a Grass- and Poison-type pitcher plant that has turned waiting for dinner into an art form. Its yellow body is shaped like a great bell, dotted with dark green spots and flanked by a broad green leaf on each side. A huge mouth with a swollen pink lip and two sharp teeth on the lower jaw takes up most of its front, with its half-moon eyes tucked just below, while a leaf arches over the top like a lid and sprouts a long brown vine with a yellow tip.

That vine is the bait. Victreebel flicks it about so that it looks like a small living creature, while a sweet, honey-like scent drifts from its mouth to draw curious prey closer. Anything that wanders too near is swallowed whole and left to the acid pooled inside, which can melt even the hardest object into nothing. The cleverest twist: acid that has dissolved plenty of meals turns sweeter still, so every catch makes the next one easier.

“Lures prey into its mouth with a honeylike aroma. The helpless prey is melted with a dissolving fluid.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996

As the final stage of the Bellsprout family, Victreebel only appears when a Weepinbell is exposed to a Leaf Stone, so it is a rare sight in the wild. That has not stopped the rumours – Victreebel are said to live in huge colonies deep in the jungle, though nobody who has gone looking has ever come back to confirm it. Pokémon Sleep reveals a sillier side: even while dozing it keeps its mouth wide open in case a snack drifts by, and very occasionally it forgets the plan altogether and sleeps face down.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A gave the Flycatcher Pokémon a dramatic upgrade in 2025. Mega Victreebel swells to 4.5 metres, its body so bloated with acid that it wraps its own vine around its throat to stop the stuff sloshing out. Gone is the patient ambush, too: Mega Victreebel bounds after opponents and body-tackles them, using the leaves over its head to fan a dizzyingly sweet scent that stops foes in their tracks.

Victreebel has had a colourful career outside the wild as well. In the West it was a Pokémon Blue exclusive, and it opens Erika's Celadon Gym battle in Red and Blue. In the anime it was James's partner from The Breeding Center Secret to Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid, greeting its Trainer by clamping its mouth over his head whenever it popped out of its Poké Ball – which James took as a sign of loyalty.

How big is Victreebel?

Victreebel silhouette
Victreebel1.7 m (5′07″)
Trainer1.60 m (5′03″)

At 1.7 m (5′07″) Victreebel stands about as tall as an adult, yet at 15.5 kg (34.2 lb) it weighs roughly what an average four-year-old does – while Mega Victreebel balloons to 4.5 m and 125.5 kg, about the height of a double-decker bus.

In Generation I Victreebel had a single Special stat of 100. When Gold and Silver split Special in two, it became Sp. Atk 100 and Sp. Def 60, giving 80/105/65/100/60/70 (a total of 480) through Generation V. Generation VI raised its Sp. Def to 70, for today's total of 490 – Attack (105) is its strongest suit. Mega Victreebel adds exactly 100 points – 80/125/85/135/95/70, a total of 590 – pouring the extra power into Attack, Defense and both special stats while HP and Speed stay put. Base experience yield was 191 in Generations I–IV and 216 in Generations V–VI, and is 221 today. Base friendship was 70 in Generations II–VII and is 50 today. It gives 3 Attack EVs and, on the Medium Slow curve, needs 1,059,860 Exp. Points to reach level 100. In the Pokéathlon of HeartGold and SoulSilver it is a powerhouse rather than a sprinter: four stars for Power and Stamina, but a single star for Speed.

Spin-offs & cameos

Pokémon GO

Victreebel has been setting its sweet-smelling traps in Pokémon GO since launch day, 6 July 2016. Weepinbell evolves into it for 100 Bellsprout Candy, and a buddy from the family earns Candy every 3 km. It appeared as a four-star raid boss from 4 November 2017, gained Leaf Tornado and Acid Spray as Charged Attacks on 19 March 2019, and joined the Shadow Pokémon on 7 November 2019. Shiny Victreebel debuted on 17 July 2020 with the GO Fest 2020 Weekly Challenge: Friendship, and the family got its own spotlight on Bellsprout Community Day, 20 April 2024, when any Weepinbell evolved during the event learned the exclusive Fast Attack Magical Leaf – a move that came back for the December 2024 Community Day. The big moment arrived on 20 February 2026, when Mega Victreebel burst onto the scene at Pokémon GO Tour: Kalos, Shiny-ready from day one and starring in Super Mega Raids. Mega Evolving it costs 300 Mega Energy the first time, lifts its Attack from 207 to 265 and its Defense from 135 to 181, and unlocks Acid Spray+, a Mega-powered take on the move. Sucker Punch joined its Fast Attacks on 8 September 2026.

Moves

Victreebel has always been a Pokémon that does its homework early. A Leaf Stone ends its levelling career, so in Red and Blue its own list stopped at level 18, below the level at which Bellsprout normally evolves, and most of its tricks were picked up as Bellsprout and Weepinbell, then topped up with TMs such as Swords Dance and SolarBeam. Gold and Silver pared it back to four level-1 moves, and FireRed and LeafGreen added Stockpile, Swallow and Spit Up: rather fitting for a plant that is mostly mouth.

Diamond and Pearl finally gave it something to level up for, a 140-power Leaf Storm at level 47, joined by Leaf Blade in Platinum and Leaf Tornado in Black and White. Sun and Moon pulled the big leaves forward to levels 32 and 44, Let's Go handed it Power Whip at level 1, and Scarlet and Violet stretch its TM list to 40. Legends: Z-A rewrites the script entirely, with Lunge, Knock Off, Toxic Spikes, Sludge Wave and Power Whip on a 17-move list, and a Mega Evolution to show them off.

Signature moves

GrassVine Whip

The lure-and-lash vine. Red and Blue made Victreebel inherit it from Bellsprout, but ever since Gold and Silver it has been a level-1 move in every game, Let's Go and Legends: Z-A included.

GrassRazor Leaf

Spinning leaf blades that have been a level-1 move since Red and Blue. Only Let's Go leaves them to Bellsprout and Weepinbell, and Legends: Z-A moves them to level 10.

GrassSleep Powder

The drowsy dusting that comes before the big gulp. Red and Blue list it twice, at levels 1 and 18, and every main-series game since has it at level 1, apart from Let's Go (where Weepinbell must teach it) and Legends: Z-A (level 13).

NormalSpit Up (with Stockpile & Swallow)

FireRed and LeafGreen handed it the full store-it, gulp-it, spit-it trio at level 1, a neat fit for a Pokémon that is mostly mouth. All three stayed on its list right up to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (Let's Go aside) and live on as Move Reminder moves in Scarlet and Violet.

GrassLeaf Storm

Its first real reward for levelling up: a 140-power blast at level 47 in Diamond and Pearl (130 power from X and Y). Sun and Moon moved it to level 32, Scarlet and Violet teach it the moment Weepinbell evolves, and it is the level-48 finale in Legends: Z-A.

GrassLeaf Blade

A sharp slice that joined Leaf Storm at level 47 in Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver. It is the level-44 finale in Sun, Moon, Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Scarlet and Violet, and in Scarlet and Violet it is the only move Victreebel learns at a numbered level above 1.

GrassPower Whip

120 power of pure vine. It first reached Victreebel as an egg move in Black and White, then became a level-1 and level-54 move in Let's Go, a Move Reminder move in Scarlet and Violet, and the level-44 heavy hitter in Legends: Z-A.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow7 level-up · 16 TM/HM

Victreebel is missing from Red, so Red players have to trade for one; in Blue and Yellow you evolve Weepinbell with a Leaf Stone. One level column covers all four games. Its own list stops at level 18, below the level 21 at which Bellsprout normally evolves, so in practice its moves are taught to Bellsprout or Weepinbell before the stone, or come from TMs. Move categories in Generations I–III follow the move's type (Grass and Psychic are special; Normal, Poison and Bug are physical), and non-damaging moves are listed as Status. Move names keep the original spellings (PoisonPowder, SolarBeam). 'By transfer' lists Generation II moves a Victreebel can bring back through the Time Capsule.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor data also covers XD)7 level-up · 19 TM/HM · 7 egg · 9 tutor

Victreebel isn't found in Hoenn: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald and FireRed need a trade, while LeafGreen players can evolve Weepinbell, and in XD a Shadow Weepinbell can be snagged and evolved. FireRed and LeafGreen add Stockpile, Swallow and Spit Up at level 1 (Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald don't have them). Categories follow the move's type (Generation III split); Hidden Power's category depends on its type. Tutor games are FireRed/LeafGreen, Emerald and XD. Morning Sun comes from the Shadow Weepinbell in XD, and Teeter Dance from a Bellsprout given away in Japan's 'Egg Pokémon Present' event. Contest stats are not included.

Evolve Weepinbell in every Generation IV game. This is the first generation in which each move has its own physical or special category. Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver add Leaf Blade at level 47 alongside Leaf Storm. Tutor games: Platinum and HeartGold/SoulSilver (Worry Seed is HeartGold/SoulSilver only); Diamond and Pearl have no tutor moves for it, which is why Knock Off and Gastro Acid count as pre-evolution moves only there. Weather Ball is a HeartGold/SoulSilver-only egg move. 'By transfer' lists moves only available in Generation III.

Victreebel is not in Sword and Shield or Legends: Arceus, so Generation VIII means Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, where you evolve Weepinbell. Its level-up list now folds in the old Bellsprout and Weepinbell moves (Growth, Wrap, Poison Powder, Stun Spore, Acid, Knock Off, Gastro Acid, Poison Jab and Slam) at level 1, so nothing has to be taught before the Leaf Stone. Leaf Tornado is listed both at level 1 and on evolution. Toxic is missing from its TM list in these games. Acid Spray, Clear Smog, Leech Life and Strength Sap come from Bellsprout-family Pokémon caught in the Grand Underground, which can already know egg moves. There are no move tutors for it.

Victreebel in the anime

Debut EP026Pokémon Scent-sation! · First major role EP057The Breeding Center Secret · Its appearances on screen, and 2 other trainers who raised one.

In the anime, Victreebel means James's Victreebel. It came back from a breeding centre run by Butch and Cassidy already evolved and greeted its Trainer by swallowing his head, a gag that ran from Kanto through the Orange Islands and Johto and that James's Carnivine later took up. In between chomps it was James's main battler, armed with Sleep Powder, Razor Leaf and Vine Whip, and it lost to Ash and his friends far more often than it won.

Its exit was pure Team Rocket: traded to the Magikarp salesman for a Weepinbell, it met the Victreebel that Weepinbell became in mid-air, fell in love and went off into the forest with it. Beyond James, a group of Victreebel lives on Gym Leader Ramos's ranch in Kalos, a wild one gives Meowth a nasty bite on Honey Island, Red's takes on Giovanni in Pokémon Origins, Green's swings her across Cerulean Cave in Pokémon Evolutions, and Mega Victreebel made its animated debut in a Pokémon Horizons Mega Evolution corner.

Now: Went off into the forest with James's second Victreebel after the pair fell in love in mid-air (EP261)

James's Victreebel started out as a Weepinbell that he caught off-screen during Team Rocket's travels through Kanto. He left it at a Pokémon breeding centre to be looked after, never suspecting that the place was run by Butch and Cassidy. When he went to collect it during the escape in The Breeding Center Secret (EP057), a Victreebel came out instead, and James had barely started celebrating before it latched on to his head. The reunion ended behind bars: Butch and Cassidy framed everyone for burglary, and while Misty got Ash, Brock and Todd cleared, Team Rocket stayed in jail.

Its next outing was a firefighting fiasco. When Meowth caught fire, James ordered Victreebel to swallow him and smother the flames. The flames kept burning anyway, Victreebel ended up ablaze too and chased Team Rocket around until Ash's Squirtle doused the lot of them (EP074).

In the Orange Islands, Victreebel took over from Weezing as James's usual partner, fighting alongside Jessie's Arbok or Lickitung. Butch and Cassidy's Drowzee hypnotised it into turning on its own Trainers until Pikachu wrecked their machine (EP086), it went after the Crystal Onix with Arbok (EP087) and it showed off Razor Leaf against a Gastly that the leaves could not touch (EP095). When Team Rocket kidnapped two lovestruck Nidoran, Victreebel trapped Tony until Maria freed him, and the pair's improvised Double Kick bowled over Arbok and Victreebel together (EP100).

Sleep Powder became its secret weapon. Victreebel sent Ash's camp to sleep for a night-time raid, a plan that fell apart only because Snorlax was too heavy to haul away (EP098). At Professor Oak's Laboratory it tried to swallow Ash's Muk, spat it out in disgust and then put it to sleep, before Gary's Nidoqueen Mega Punched Victreebel straight back into Team Rocket (EP115). In between, Misty's Goldeen juggled it with Fury Attack when James and Meowth tried to take a Poliwag that could lead them to the Salveyo weed Jessie needed to cure her paralysis (EP110).

In Johto, Victreebel became James's main battler, and the opposition queued up to beat it. Brock's Onix was put to sleep, but Misty's Poliwag slapped it silly (EP120); Pikachu and Bailey's Bellossom saw off its Take Down and Wrap (EP122); Mariah's Oddish kicked it, Stun Spored it and kicked it again (EP137); Zane's Ninetales and Suzie's Vulpix burnt up its Razor Leaf (EP169); and a festival crasher's Machoke finished it with Seismic Toss when Team Rocket stood up for the Wobbuffet villagers (EP173).

It had its moments, though. In The Fortune Hunters (EP157), a fortune-telling book had James convinced he could not lose. Dressed in a Moltres costume, he kept Victreebel off his head for once, and it beat Cassidy's Raticate. Then Butch and Cassidy revealed that the book was another of their scams, James's confidence collapsed, and Butch's Primeape blasted Team Rocket away.

The Grass Route (EP178) gave Victreebel a tournament of its own. With a haul of Leaf Stones up for grabs at a competition for Grass types only, James entered as 'Mr. Semaj', only to go out in the first round to Ephraim's Skiploom, Skippy, whose Leech Seed and Double Team left Victreebel drained and dizzy. Ash and Bulbasaur made it all the way to the final, where the same Skiploom beat them too.

Victreebel was also there when Jessie and James did the right thing. While Butch and Cassidy were trying to capture a parent Lugia, Jessie and James worked to free it, and Victreebel's Vine Whip cut short Butch's Hitmontop and struck a support of the energy barrier holding Lugia (EP222). When Team Rocket netted a lonely Ninetales, James sent Victreebel hurtling at Brock, but Ninetales knocked him clear, and Bayleef Tackled Victreebel back to the balloon (EP232). Its last battle against Ash's group came at the Coastline Gym, where Misty's furious Psyduck shrugged off a Razor Leaf and answered with Confusion and Psychic (EP256).

The end came in Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid (EP261). After Team Rocket crash-landed on the Magikarp salesman, he offered them a Weepinbell that knew Sweet Scent, and the trio decided who to trade by elimination. Meowth was the brains, Weezing had Smokescreen, Wobbuffet had Counter and Jessie had owned Arbok for too long, so Victreebel, with its habit of latching on to James's head, was the one to go. James was heartbroken. The new Weepinbell knocked out Ash's Phanpy with Vine Whip, then evolved in the middle of the battle and promptly swallowed Jessie; once she was free, Jessie had Arbok send it flying.

Meanwhile the original Victreebel had tried to eat the salesman, who kicked it away. The two Victreebel met in mid-air, fell in love and went off into the forest together, and James was left without either of them. After that, Victreebel lived on in James's memories. His Carnivine took up the head-biting habit (DP002), and in the English dub James even compares it to Victreebel. When Gardenia offered him a Victreebel in exchange for Carnivine, he drifted off into a memory of his old partner before turning her down (DP031), and Victreebel appears once more in a Team Rocket fantasy in Rocket Revengers! (JN145).

Personality

For a Pokémon that lures its prey with a sweet-smelling vine, James's Victreebel was a big softie. Its way of saying hello was to swallow James's head the moment it left its Poké Ball, which James took as a sign of loyalty, even if the habit often handed the first move in battle to the other side. Now and then it picked a different victim: it went after Meowth (EP095, EP173), chomped Jessie's Arbok (EP104) and, in Roll On, Pokémon!, engulfed James twice, the second time by accident (EP120). Its cry was a piercing shriek rather than its own name, and it was loud enough to give away Team Rocket's plant disguises at the Azalea Gym (EP144).

Key battles

Ramos
Gym Leader (Coumarine City)
Victreebel (several)

First seen: XY057Thawing an Icy Panic!

Coumarine City's Gym Leader keeps a whole group of Victreebel in a pasture for Grass-type Pokémon on his hillside ranch. When Clemont's Easy-Peasy Mountain Climber misfired and sent him crashing through the gate, the angry Victreebel went for him until Ramos rode up on his Gogoat and stepped in. Once he had heard the group's explanation, Ramos let them take a shortcut across the ranch to the Pokémon Center (XY057).

Ash & Victreebel

Ash has never owned a Victreebel, but he spent years on the wrong end of James's. Its Sleep Powder put his Muk to sleep at Professor Oak's Laboratory (EP115), while his Bulbasaur sent it flying with a single Vine Whip (EP104). Ash and James even entered the same Grass Tournament: Victreebel went out in the first round, while Ash and Bulbasaur reached the final (EP178).

Anime trivia

  • James never saw his Weepinbell evolve. He left it at a breeding centre that turned out to be run by Butch and Cassidy and came back to find a Victreebel (EP057).
  • Victreebel's habit of swallowing James's head started his long-running gag of being attacked by his own Pokémon. Carnivine picked up the habit in Two Degrees of Separation! (DP002), and in the English dub James even compares it to Victreebel.
  • In its debut, Eric Stuart voiced Victreebel in the English dub, saying 'Bel' and 'Victreebel'. From All Fired Up! (EP074) onwards the dub kept its original Japanese cry, a high-pitched shriek.
  • For the Grass Tournament, James signed up under the alias 'Mr. Semaj', which is his own name spelt backwards (EP178).
  • James's second Victreebel evolved from Weepinbell in the middle of a battle, without the Leaf Stone that Weepinbell needs in the games (EP261).
  • Victreebel cannot learn Tackle in the games, yet James's used it from Pikachu Re-Volts (EP086) onwards, and in The Grass Route it was drained by Leech Seed, a move Grass types are immune to in the games (EP178).
  • In Bound for Trouble, Victreebel skipped its usual greeting and chomped Jessie's Arbok instead of James (EP104).

Victreebel in the movies

featuring Victreebel.

For a Pokémon with such a famous TV career, Victreebel has never had a real part in a Pokémon film. James's Victreebel, star of so many Team Rocket mishaps on TV, never followed him to the cinema, and none of the films or Pikachu shorts gives the species a scene of its own. For Victreebel stories away from the TV series, try the manga and the bookshelf instead.

Victreebel in the Pokémon TCG

19 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Victreebel has been setting traps in the card game since Japan's Jungle expansion in March 1997, which reached English players in 1999 with Ken Sugimori's art and an attack called Lure. The idea stuck: most Victreebel cards since have had some way of dragging a Benched Pokémon into the open or pinning it in place, from the Fragrance Trap power that Erika's Victreebel introduced in Gym Heroes to Nectar Pod, Burning Scent and Tangling Tendrils. Then come the sweet scents and acids, which Burn, Poison and Confuse, melt away Energy, switch off Abilities and, on the 151 card, keep working a turn later. Erika brought her Victreebel back for Ascended Heroes in 2026.

The look has grown up with the card game. Sugimori's clean official pictures set the tone, Miki Tanaka drew Victreebel for Aquapolis and again for Celestial Storm in 2018, on a card modelled on the first, and Midori Harada put a Leaf Stone, the item that turns Weepinbell into Victreebel, into the Triumphant art. Since then Sanosuke Sakuma, TOKIYA, Anesaki Dynamic, Tika Matsuno and Jerky have each had a turn, and Takashi Shiraishi brought Erika's Victreebel into the Mega Evolution era. On the screen it has starred twice in TCG Pocket, with Sumiyoshi Kizuki's EX Legend Maker art in Genetic Apex and a Shiny Victreebel by MAHOU in Mega Rising.

Cards to know

  • Jungle 14/64 — Ken Sugimori's original Victreebel, whose Lure attack drags a Benched Pokémon into the open, and early Unlimited holos went out without their Jungle symbol.
  • Gym Heroes 26/132 — Erika's Victreebel brought Fragrance Trap to the card game.
  • Celestial Storm 3/168 — Modelled on the Aquapolis Victreebel and drawn by the same artist, Miki Tanaka, with Fragrance Trap and Corrosive Acid back.
  • Unbroken Bonds 15/214 — Reactive Poison does 190 damage for a single Grass Energy against a target that is Burned, Poisoned and Confused.
  • 151 071/165 — Slow-Acting Acid hits now and then delivers 12 more damage counters a turn later, Victreebel's slow digestion in card form.
  • Ascended Heroes 006/217 — Erika's Victreebel blooms again, hitting harder for every Erika's Pokémon in play.

Every English-language card

Victreebel — Jungle · 14/64 · 1999 (Level 42. The original Victreebel card does exactly what the Pokédex says: Lure, for a single Grass Energy, drags one of your opponent's Benched Pokémon into the Active spot, and Acid (20) can stop it running away on your opponent's next turn. Like the rest of Jungle it came in 1st Edition and Unlimited prints, and the earliest Unlimited holos were printed without the Jungle set symbol, a slip fixed later in the run. In Japan it was holo only.)
Jungle · 14/64 · 1999Rare Holo · Illus. Ken Sugimori
Victreebel — Jungle · 30/64 · 1999 (The non-holo version of the Jungle card, with the same picture and attacks. It was an English-only extra: the Japanese Jungle Victreebel was holo only.)
Jungle · 30/64 · 1999Rare · Illus. Ken Sugimori · Reprint of Jungle 14/64
Victreebel — Base Set 2 · 32/130 · 2000 (A straight reprint of the non-holo Jungle Victreebel in the Base Set 2 compilation.)
Base Set 2 · 32/130 · 2000Rare · Illus. Ken Sugimori · Reprint of Jungle 14/64
Erika's Victreebel — Gym Heroes · 26/132 · 2000 (Level 37. Celadon City's Gym Leader gets her own Victreebel, and it brought a new trick: Fragrance Trap, a Pokémon Power that flips a coin once a turn and, on heads, pulls one of your opponent's Benched Pokémon into the Active spot. Then Razor Leaf slices it for 50, the same move Erika's Victreebel knows in Pokémon Red and Blue. Japan first released it in the Tamamushi City Gym theme deck (Tamamushi is Celadon's Japanese name) before reprinting it in Leaders' Stadium.)
Erika's Victreebel · Gym Heroes · 26/132 · 2000Rare · Illus. Ken Sugimori
Victreebel — Aquapolis · H30/H32 · 2003 (Fragrance Trap returns as a Poké-Power, still swapping one of your opponent's Benched Pokémon into the firing line on heads, and Corrosive Acid (40) can leave the victim Burned. It also carries an e-Reader dot-code strip (card ID D-57) whose Pokédex entry, from Pokémon Crystal, says that even the hardest object melts away once Victreebel swallows it.)
Aquapolis · H30/H32 · 2003Rare Holo · Illus. Miki Tanaka
Victreebel — Aquapolis · 42/147 · 2003 (The non-holo version of the Aquapolis Victreebel, with the same art and text. In Japan it had its own number in Wind from the Sea, right next to the holo.)
Aquapolis · 42/147 · 2003Rare · Illus. Miki Tanaka · Reprint of Aquapolis H30/H32
Victreebel — EX FireRed & LeafGreen · 17/112 · 2004 (Made for the Kanto remakes. While Victreebel is your Active Pokémon, its Acid Sampler Poké-Body drips 1 damage counter onto the Defending Pokémon between every turn, and Acid (50) stops the victim retreating, so it simply has to sit there and take it.)
EX FireRed & LeafGreen · 17/112 · 2004Rare Holo · Illus. Tomokazu Komiya
Victreebel — EX Legend Maker · 13/92 · 2006 (A picky eater: its Nectar Pod Poké-Power can only lure out one of your opponent's Benched Stage 2 Pokémon, so it goes straight for the big evolved threats. Sleep Poison leaves the target Asleep and Poisoned for two Energy, and Sharp Leaf hits for 40, or 70 on heads. Sumiyoshi Kizuki's picture was used again for TCG Pocket's Genetic Apex Victreebel in 2024.)
EX Legend Maker · 13/92 · 2006Rare Holo · Illus. Sumiyoshi Kizuki
Victreebel — Legends Awakened · 44/146 · 2008 (Level 40. Burning Scent lets you first swap one of your opponent's Benched Pokémon into the Active spot, then leaves the Defending Pokémon both Burned and Poisoned. Energy Dissolve hits for 60, and at the end of your opponent's next turn one Energy attached to the Defending Pokémon melts away.)
Legends Awakened · 44/146 · 2008Rare · Illus. Kouki Saitou
Victreebel — Triumphant · 12/102 · 2010 (While Victreebel is your Active Pokémon, Tangling Tendrils makes your opponent's Active Pokémon cost two more Energy to retreat. Acidic Drain then Burns and Poisons it for two Energy and removes 3 damage counters from Victreebel. Midori Harada's picture includes a Leaf Stone, the item that evolves Weepinbell into Victreebel.)
Triumphant · 12/102 · 2010Rare Holo · Illus. Midori Harada
Victreebel — Furious Fists · 3/111 · 2014 (Wafting Scent lets you discard a Grass Energy from Victreebel once a turn to leave your opponent's Active Pokémon Confused and Poisoned, and Spiral Drain hits for 60 while healing 30. A non-holo print was only available in the Enchanted Echo theme deck.)
Furious Fists · 3/111 · 2014Rare Holo · Illus. Sanosuke Sakuma
Victreebel — Guardians Rising · 3/145 · 2017 (Pollen Hazard is a triple whammy for just one Grass Energy: 20 damage and the target is Burned, Confused and Poisoned all at once. Stick and Absorb follows up with 80 damage, heals 20 and stops the Defending Pokémon retreating. Japan also gave it a Mirror Holo print in the Facing a New Trial collection (003/049).)
Guardians Rising · 3/145 · 2017Rare · Illus. TOKIYA
Victreebel — Celestial Storm · 3/168 · 2018 (Modelled on the Aquapolis holo and drawn by the same artist, Miki Tanaka. Fragrance Trap comes back as an Ability, still flipping a coin to haul one of your opponent's Benched Pokémon into the Active spot, and Corrosive Acid now hits for 80 with a chance to Burn.)
Celestial Storm · 3/168 · 2018Rare Holo · Illus. Miki Tanaka
Victreebel — Unbroken Bonds · 15/214 · 2019 (Reactive Poison does 10 damage plus 60 more for each Special Condition on your opponent's Active Pokémon, so a target that is Burned, Poisoned and Confused takes 190 for a single Grass Energy. Gastro Acid (90), a move Victreebel can learn in the games, switches off the Defending Pokémon's Abilities until the end of your next turn.)
Unbroken Bonds · 15/214 · 2019Rare · Illus. Anesaki Dynamic
Victreebel — Battle Styles · 003/163 · 2021 (Panic Vine (40) leaves your opponent's Active Pokémon Confused and unable to retreat on their next turn, and Solar Beam blasts it for 120.)
Battle Styles · 003/163 · 2021Rare · Illus. Tika Matsuno
Victreebel — 151 · 071/165 · 2023 (Part of the set that celebrates the original 151 Pokémon. Slow-Acting Acid hits for 120, and if the Defending Pokémon is still around at the end of your opponent's next turn it gets 12 more damage counters, the slow digestion of the Pokédex turned into an attack. Spit Up does 50 for one Grass Energy.)
151 · 071/165 · 2023Uncommon · Illus. Jerky
Erika's Victreebel — Ascended Heroes · 006/217 · 2026 (Erika's Victreebel is back. Flower Garden Rondo does 40 damage for each of your Erika's Pokémon in play, so a full garden hits hard, and Solar Beam does 130. Its Pokédex entry comes from Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Ascended Heroes also has two Mirror Holo versions, one with a Grass Energy pattern and one with a Poké Ball pattern.)

Victreebel in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

Victreebel's best stories away from the TV series are on paper, and plenty of them involve someone nearly becoming lunch. Pokémon Adventures introduced it in 1997 with a wild Safari Zone Victreebel snatching Red by the ankles, before Red escaped and caught one of his own. Later, in the Gold, Silver & Crystal arc, Crystal catches one on Route 30 that tries to use Chikorita as a shield. In 2000 and 2001 James's Victreebel was all over Scholastic's chapter books: it swallows its Trainer in Raichu Shows Off and Talent Showdown (where it gulps down a Pokémon-controlling flute too), attacks Jessie in Nidoran's New Friend and beats Brock's Onix in Go West, Young Ash. More recently, the 2025 guide Pokécology gave Victreebel colonies an illustration of their own.

Manga

Pokémon Adventures PS021, 'Long Live the Nidoking!': Victreebel's manga debut
Pokémon AdventuresRed (caught in the Safari Zone) · PS021 'Long Live the Nidoking!' / volume 2 · 1997Victreebel's Pokémon Adventures debut plays like a jungle horror film. In the Safari Zone a wild Victreebel lassoes Red by the ankles, hoists him into the air and bares its teeth, and the chapter ends with Red seemingly gone. In 'A Hollow Victreebel' (PS022) it turns out he has braced himself, arms and legs outstretched, above the pool of acid inside it. He is carried off to a gathering of Bellsprout, Weepinbell and Victreebel holding an evolution ritual, with Red hanging upside down on the menu. A Poké Doll decoy gets him free, and he turns the tables: he catches a Victreebel in a Safari Ball, then uses its vines and Poison Powder to help him catch a Nidoking.
Pokémon Adventures PS118, 'Three Cheers for Chikorita': Crystal catches a Victreebel
Pokémon AdventuresCrystal · PS118 'Three Cheers for Chikorita' / volume 10 · 2001On Route 30, Crystal is trying to catch a Victreebel when the Chikorita that has followed her from Professor Elm's lab jumps in front of her Arcanine's Ember. The cornered Victreebel grabs Chikorita and holds him up as a shield, but Chumee the Smoochum's Mean Look seals the deal and Crystal makes the catch. She plans to send the Victreebel to Professor Oak, though Chikorita refuses to go with it.
Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl PDP01, 'Newcomer Trainer, Dawn'
Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl (Takayuki Sakai)PDP01 'Newcomer Trainer, Dawn' / volume 1 · 2008In the first chapter of Takayuki Sakai's manga based on the Diamond & Pearl anime, Dawn has just failed for the second time to catch a Pikachu when a Victreebel snares her with Vine Whip. The Pikachu turns out to be Ash's: Dawn ends up pretending to faint, and it hops right over her into Ash's arms.

Victreebel trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Victreebel such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Victreebel's English name most likely bundles victory, tree and bell into one word. Count the letters and you get exactly ten, with a single L in 'bell' – the longest an English Pokémon name could be before Generation VI. The Japanese name, Utsubot, comes from utsubokazura – the Japanese name for the pitcher plant – possibly with a cheeky 'pot' tacked on the end, which suits a Pokémon that is basically a cooking pot with a lid. Other languages took different angles: French Empiflor joins empiffrer (to stuff oneself) and flore (flora), German Sarzenia borrows from Sarracenia, a genus of real pitcher plants, and in Chinese it is Dàshíhuā, a 'big-appetite flower'.

Design origins

Atsuko Nishida designed Victreebel and the rest of the Bellsprout family, and the inspiration is easy to spot: Victreebel is a carnivorous pitcher plant come to life, all bell-shaped trap, lid-like leaf and sweet-smelling bait. Even its Shiny colours may be in on the joke – the blue lips could nod to the way a real pitcher plant's rim turns blue under ultraviolet light. Mega Victreebel takes the idea further. Its bloated, acid-filled body looks to the Nepenthes genus in particular, whose larger lower traps sit on the ground, and the vine coiled around its throat echoes the twining tendrils of species such as Nepenthes mirabilis. Some see other things in its swollen shape, too: a calabash or bottle gourd, a waterskin or wineskin, or a mizu yo-yo – the water-balloon yo-yos children hook out of tubs in the Japanese festival game yo-yo tsuri. Mega Victreebel was teased in a short video, 'The Case of the Sweet Scent Incident', released on the official Pokémon YouTube channel on 21 August 2025.
