Meet Clefable

Everything you need to know about the Fairy Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Meet Clefable, the Fairy Pokémon: a tall, pink, vaguely star-shaped creature with long, brown-tipped ears, a curl of fur over its forehead, a tightly coiled tail and a pair of small, three-pointed wings. It is the grand finale of the Cleffa family, blossoming from Clefairy at the touch of a Moon Stone, and it has been in the Pokédex since the very first games in 1996.

Those ears are its superpower. Clefable's hearing is so sharp that it can pick out a pin dropping more than half a mile away – which is exactly why it can't stand noise. It makes its home in quiet, remote mountains, keeps well clear of crowds and is very protective of its peaceful little world. Its wings are not much use for real flight, but they help it skip along so lightly that it seems to float, and its bouncy step even carries it across the surface of water.

“It has an acute sense of hearing. It can easily hear a pin being dropped nearly 1,100 yards away.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed & Violet · 1996

Shy to the core and most active at night, Clefable is one of the rarest Pokémon around: sense a human nearby and it is gone. Its deepest bond is with the Moon. On quiet, moonlit nights it strolls across deserted lakes, and when the moon is full it stares upwards so intently that some scientists suspect it is homesick – one legend even says it listens for the voices of its kin living up there. Folklore has a sweeter side too: spot a pair of Clefable skipping by and a happy marriage is said to follow.

For five generations Clefable was filed as a Normal type, until X & Y reclassified the family as Fairy – a type that finally matched the category it had carried since 1996 – and gave its Special Attack a boost. It is also prized for Magic Guard, an Ability that shields it from every kind of damage except direct attacks. Then, in 2025, Pokémon Legends: Z-A handed it a dazzling Mega Evolution: Mega Clefable, a Fairy/Flying type with butterfly-like wings that levitates by bending gravity with moonlight.

To many fans Clefable is the quiet charmer of the Kanto roster: gentle, a little mysterious and secretly tougher than it looks. Whether it is Lusamine's devoted companion in Alola, Whitney's surprise pick for her HeartGold and SoulSilver rematch or Jacinthe's trusty partner in Lumiose City, Clefable always brings a little starlight with it.

How big is Clefable?

Clefable silhouette
Clefable1.3 m (4′03″)
Trainer1.60 m (5′03″)

At 1.3 m (4′03″) Clefable is about as tall as an eight-year-old, and at 40.0 kg (88.2 lb) it weighs roughly as much as a big German Shepherd – impressive for something that skips so lightly it can walk on water.

Spin-offs & cameos

Super Smash Bros.

Clefable itself has never stepped into a Super Smash Bros. arena, but its pre-evolution has been a tiny agent of chaos. In the original Super Smash Bros., Clefairy hops out of a Poké Ball and uses Metronome to copy the attack of a random Poké Ball Pokémon – Mew included – and anyone who bumps into it takes 12% damage. Melee rewired Metronome into four random effects: a gust of wind, flames along the floor, a towering geyser or an Explosion-style blast. Clefairy also cameos in Melee's opening movie and earned a trophy that calls it a very cute Pokémon and a popular pet. Ultimate brought it back as a Novice-class spirit, fought on Magicant against a white Jigglypuff while the screen keeps flipping – a nod to Metronome's unpredictability.

Pokémon GO

Clefable has been part of Pokémon GO since launch in July 2016: evolving a Clefairy costs 50 Candy, and as a buddy the family earns Candy every 1 km. Shiny hunters once had to hatch a Shiny Cleffa and evolve it twice, until Shiny Clefairy began appearing in the wild during the Solstice-themed event of 19–24 June 2020. Its moves have been reshuffled over the years: Pound gave way to Charge Beam in February 2017, the Steel-type Meteor Mash arrived in February 2019, Charm in July 2019, Fairy Wind in June 2023 and Swift in June 2024, alongside Moonblast, Dazzling Gleam, Psychic and Draining Kiss. With 216 Stamina, 178 Attack and 162 Defense, it is a sturdy, friendly face for any team.

Battler (Mega Evolution)

The Clefablite is sold in the Frontier Shop for 2,000 VP, so Clefable can Mega Evolve in this online battle game.

Moves

For most of its history Clefable has been a Pokémon of very few level-up moves. In Red and Blue, the Moon Stone froze its list at four starting moves (Sing, DoubleSlap, Minimize and Metronome), so smart trainers taught Clefairy everything they wanted first and then leant on a TM case stuffed with Thunderbolt, Ice Beam and Psychic. Gold and Silver slipped in Moonlight, the Game Boy Advance games added Meteor Mash and a stack of move tutors, and X and Y turned Clefable into a Fairy type with Disarming Voice and, for Clefairy, the brand-new Moonblast.

Sword and Shield finally opened the floodgates with 22 moves at level 1, every Cleffa and Clefairy trick included, plus the new Life Dew. Scarlet and Violet trimmed that to four headline moves (Metronome, Meteor Mash, Moonblast and Life Dew) and sent the rest to the Move Reminder. The two Legends games went the other way and gave Clefable proper levelling curves for once, and Legends: Z-A hands it Air Slash and Dual Wingbeat, which hit even harder once Clefable Mega Evolves.

Signature moves

NormalMetronome

The finger-wag that could unleash any move at all. Clefable knows it from the moment it evolves in every game from Red and Blue to Scarlet and Violet (Let's Go even teaches it twice), and it doubles as TM35 in Red and Blue, TR14 in Sword and Shield and TM080 in Scarlet and Violet. Legends: Arceus is the only game where Clefable can't use it.

FairyMoonblast

The Fairy-type finisher that arrived with X and Y. At first only a Clefairy could learn it, so evolving too early meant missing out; since Sword and Shield Clefable has it from the start, and the Legends games make it a late reward at level 37 in Arceus and 48 in Z-A.

NormalMoonlight

A moonlit heal that came with Gold and Silver as one of Clefable's four starting moves. After five generations as a move Clefairy had to learn first (turning Fairy-type in X and Y along the way), it is back on Clefable's own list in Sword and Shield.

NormalSing

Clefable's lullaby is a starting move in every game from Red and Blue to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Scarlet and Violet tuck it away at the Move Reminder, and Legends: Z-A turns it into TM111.

SteelMeteor Mash

A Steel-type punch with a suitably cosmic name, learned by Clefairy since the Game Boy Advance games. For years Clefable could only get it by learning it before evolving; Sword and Shield finally put it on Clefable's own starting list, and it stays there in Scarlet and Violet.

PsychicCalm Mind

Raises Special Attack and Special Defense together, and pairs beautifully with Moonblast. Clefable has been able to learn it in every game since Ruby and Sapphire: TM04 up to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (and again in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl), TR49 in Sword and Shield, TM129 in Scarlet and Violet, level 21 in Legends: Arceus and TM006 in Legends: Z-A.

WaterLife Dew

A Water-type sprinkle that heals Clefable and its allies. Sword and Shield added it to the starting list, and it is one of only four moves Clefable learns outright in Scarlet and Violet.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow4 level-up · 34 TM/HM

In Red, Blue and Yellow, Clefable only appears when a Moon Stone touches a Clefairy (the original Japanese Blue also sold it as a Rocket Game Corner prize). Evolving freezes its level-up list at four moves, all known from the start: Sing, DoubleSlap, Minimize and Metronome. Pound, Growl, Defense Curl and Light Screen have to be learned as a Clefairy before the stone comes out. The TM case does the heavy lifting, with Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Psychic, Fire Blast and a second helping of Metronome on TM35. In this era every Normal attack is physical and every Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ice and Psychic attack special, and moves keep their old spellings (DoubleSlap, BubbleBeam, SolarBeam). The transfer list shows Generation II moves a Clefable can carry back through the Time Capsule.

There are still no wild Clefable in Gold, Silver or Crystal, so the Moon Stone remains the only way in. Moonlight joins Sing, DoubleSlap and Metronome as a starting move, while Minimize drops off the list (a Clefable from Red, Blue or Yellow can still bring it across). Cleffa's debut opens up breeding: the Egg Moves include Belly Drum, Present, Splash and Metronome, with Amnesia, Belly Drum and Present needing chain breeding and Mimic only passed on by a parent that learned it in Red, Blue or Yellow. Cleffa also hands over Charm and Sweet Kiss, the Icy Wind TM that Clefable itself can't use, and Dizzy Punch from Crystal's Odd Egg, while event Cleffa arrived with Petal Dance, Scary Face or Swift. Crystal's move tutor teaches Flamethrower, Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. Curse is ???-type, and Hidden Power's type and category depend on the individual Pokémon.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor data also covers XD)4 level-up · 35 TM/HM · 8 egg · 25 tutor

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald have no Clefairy family to catch, so Clefable has to be traded in, while FireRed and LeafGreen bring back the Moon Stone route. The classic starting four return (Sing, DoubleSlap, Minimize and Metronome), and Clefairy now picks up Follow Me, Cosmic Power and the Steel-type Meteor Mash, all of which Clefable can only get by learning them before evolving. The tutors are the big story: 25 moves across FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald and Pokémon XD, including Softboiled, Body Slam, Double-Edge, Seismic Toss and the three elemental punches. TM04 Calm Mind makes its debut, and Wish (from Togetic) and Substitute join the Egg Moves. Categories still follow type. There is no transfer list, because nothing can be brought forward from Generations I and II.

Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver stick with the Moon Stone, and Clefable migrated from the Game Boy Advance games turn up in Pal Park's mountain area. This is the first generation where every move has its own physical or special category, which is why Hyper Beam now counts as special. Clefairy adds Wake-Up Slap, Lucky Chant and Healing Wish to the moves worth grabbing before evolving, and Cleffa can learn Uproar from the Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver tutors. Those tutors teach Clefable 20 moves of its own, among them Heal Bell, Zen Headbutt, Knock Off and (in HeartGold and SoulSilver only) Gravity. Aromatherapy (HeartGold and SoulSilver only), Covet and Fake Tears are new Egg Moves. The transfer list holds Generation III tutor moves that no Generation IV game teaches.

Black and White finally put Clefable in the wild: it hides in rustling grass in the Giant Chasm, in Black 2 and White 2 as well. Its own level-up list is unchanged, but Black 2 and White 2 bring a huge tutor roster of 27 moves, from Hyper Voice and Drain Punch to Stealth Rock and Wonder Room. Stored Power (from Clefairy) and Tickle are new Egg Moves. Before evolving, Clefairy can learn Bestow and Stored Power (and Body Slam in Black 2 and White 2), and a Dream World Cleffa in Black and White could arrive knowing Sleep Talk.

X and Y change everything: Clefable is now a pure Fairy type, and Disarming Voice joins Sing, Double Slap, Minimize and Metronome at the start. Moonlight, Charm and Sweet Kiss become Fairy moves, and Clefairy learns the brand-new Moonblast, which Clefable can only get by learning it before evolving. In X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire it still evolves from Clefairy with a Moon Stone. TM99 Dazzling Gleam is the new Fairy TM. TM94 is Rock Smash in X and Y but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Rock Smash moves to HM06. All 29 tutor moves are Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only, and Heal Pulse and Misty Terrain are new Egg Moves. The squashed old names are gone (Double Slap, Solar Beam, Thunder Punch, Soft-Boiled), and Thunderbolt, Ice Beam and Flamethrower drop to 90 power.

Spotlight joins the starting line-up in Sun and Moon, giving Clefable six level-1 moves, and it still evolves from Clefairy with a Moon Stone in all four Alola games. There are 43 TMs and no HMs any more. The Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon tutors teach 31 moves, now including Laser Focus and Telekinesis, and Cleffa can learn Uproar from them before evolving. Gravity and After You only need to be learned as a Clefairy in Sun and Moon, because the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon tutors teach them to Clefable directly. The transfer list now reaches all the way back to Red and Blue, with 35 moves from older games.

In Sword and Shield, Clefable wanders the Motostoke Riverbank and turns up in Max Raid Battles on Bridge Field, Hammerlocke Hills, Lake of Outrage and Rolling Fields; the Expansion Pass adds more spots on the Isle of Armor and in the Crown Tundra, plus Dynamax Adventures in the Max Lair. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl it evolves from Clefairy with a Moon Stone. Both pairs share one enormous starting list of 22 level-1 moves, which covers everything Cleffa and Clefairy learn plus the new Life Dew, so nothing has to be learned before evolving any more. Sword and Shield offer 36 TMs and 33 TRs; Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have 47 TMs. Egg Moves are listed separately for Sword and Shield (5) and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (14). The Expansion Pass move tutor teaches Dual Wingbeat, Meteor Beam and Misty Explosion. Moves in the transfer list flagged as unusable can't be used in Sword and Shield.

In Legends: Arceus, Clefable lives at the Fabled Spring in the Coronet Highlands, where an Alpha also appears, and it turns up in massive mass outbreaks. Moves work differently here: each has a level at which it is learned and a higher level at which it is mastered, unlocking strong and agile styles, and PP totals are lower. Clefable finally gets a real levelling curve, from Tackle and Fairy Wind up to Moonblast at 37 and Double-Edge at 47, and the move tutor offers 27 more, including Dazzling Gleam, Play Rough and Mystical Fire. There are no TMs and no breeding. Power is listed for normal, strong and agile style, and accuracy for normal and strong style.

Clefable is not part of the original Paldea line-up: from Version 2.0.1 it can be traded into Scarlet and Violet, and The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero adds it to 4★ and 6★ Tera Raid Battles. Only four moves are learned outright, all at level 1 (Metronome, Meteor Mash, Moonblast and Life Dew); the other 17 old favourites, Sing included, now wait at the Move Reminder. The 76 TMs run from Calm Mind and Dazzling Gleam to Alluring Voice, Future Sight and Meteor Beam. Present and Tickle need chain breeding, while Heal Pulse and Wish can only be copied with a Mirror Herb. There are no move tutors.

In Legends: Z-A, Clefable lives in Wild Zone 20 in Centrico Plaza, Alpha included, and the Mega Dimension expansion adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose's 4★ Fairy-type hyperspace wild zones. This is also the game that introduces Mega Clefable, which is part Flying, so Air Slash and Dual Wingbeat gain a same-type boost once Clefable Mega Evolves. It gets its fullest levelling curve yet, 16 moves up to Double-Edge at 55, and Sing becomes TM111 rather than a starting move. Moves follow this game's real-time rules: each has a level at which it is learned and a later level at which it becomes a Plus Move, and a cooldown instead of PP; accuracy isn't listed. Some powers differ from the main series, such as Dual Wingbeat (45) and Tri Attack (40). There is no breeding and no move tutor.

Clefable in the anime

Debut EP006Clefairy and the Moon Stone · Its appearances on screen, and 2 other trainers who raised one.

Clefable's anime career began with a little magic. In only the sixth episode, chips of a giant Moon Stone fell on the dancing Clefairy of Mt. Moon and turned several of them into Clefable, the first stone evolution the series had ever shown. Ever since, the species has been tied to moonlight and ritual: the Mt. Moon family returned for another dance around the Moon Stone in Advanced Generation, and in Journeys, Professor Cerise watched six Clefairy evolve and leap towards the moon, led by a Clefable he was sure was the Clefairy he had befriended as a boy.

Ash has never owned one, so Clefable's starring role belongs to Lusamine. Her Clefable, raised from a Cleffa as Lillie's childhood playmate, was turned against Lillie by Nihilego before a hug brought it back, then settled down as the cheerful caretaker of the Ultra Guardians' base, where it handed out Beast Balls and kept a herd of hungry Meltan in line. Add a showboat star, Contest entrants, Green's ill-fated lead in Pokémon Evolutions and a Unite Battle in Horizons, and it is a gentle but surprisingly varied career.

Other trainers’ Clefable

Lusamine's Clefable
Lusamine
President of the Aether Foundation, mother of Lillie and Gladion (Sun & Moon)
Cleffa → Clefairy → Clefable (female)

First seen: SM050Faba's Revenge!
Evolved: SM044A Dream Encounter!
Now: Caretaker of the Ultra Guardians' base beneath the Pokémon School in Alola

Long before Ash arrived in Alola, Clefable was Lusamine's Cleffa, and it spent the early years of Lillie and Gladion's lives as their playmate. A photo of the little Cleffa sits in Lillie's home (SM008, SM027), and a flashback shows it as a Clefairy romping with young Lillie (SM049).

That Clefairy did not stay a Clefairy for long. When Lusamine visits her daughter in A Dream Encounter! (SM044), Lillie is still cross that her mother evolved the Clefairy she loved, since she thought it was much cuter that way. Lusamine's answer is simple: it was her Pokémon, so it was hers to evolve. A fantasy shows the Moon Stone doing its work.

Clefable finally appeared in person in Faba's Revenge! (SM050). When Faba's scheme brought Nihilego through an Ultra Wormhole, Lusamine sent Clefable to attack the Ultra Beast, but it was simply overpowered, and soon Lusamine herself had fallen under the creature's control.

Its toughest moment came in Rescuing the Unwilling! (SM053). In the Ultra Deep Sea, the possessed Lusamine set Clefable on Ash and Lillie. Lillie insisted on facing it herself, calling Clefable her best friend, while Ash's Lycanroc blocked its Moonblast and Dazzling Gleam and Snowy's Powder Snow and Lycanroc's Rock Throw knocked it back. Then Lillie held out a Poké Doll, reminding Clefable of their happy times together. As it charged one more Dazzling Gleam, she told Lycanroc and Snowy to stand down and hugged Clefable as the light engulfed her, and her old friend came back to itself with a smile.

Back on its own side, Clefable proved its worth straight away. In 10,000,000 Reasons to Fight! (SM054) it carried Lillie and Snowy across a lake of poison, its Magic Guard keeping it from harm, then helped Lillie and Gladion pull Lusamine free of Nihilego. A happier occasion followed when Clefable attended Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet's wedding (SM055).

From A Mission of Ultra Urgency! (SM061) onwards, Lusamine stationed Clefable at the Ultra Guardians' secret base under the Pokémon School. It greets the team when they arrive and points them to the monitor for their briefings from Lusamine, Wicke and Professor Burnet. It brought out the Beast Balls Ash used to catch Poipole (SM067) and, when the lights suddenly went out at the base, switched on the backup power (SM078).

Its last big storyline was a domestic one. In Show Me the Metal! (SM111) a group of Meltan wandered into the base while Clefable was cleaning and began nibbling the equipment, so it chased them around the headquarters. By Got Meltan? (SM112) it was worn out, until it noticed one Meltan staring at a piece of metal in its hand. Clefable worked out what they wanted, tamed the whole group with scraps of metal and led them to Professor Kukui's class to show off a routine of acrobatic stunts.

Clefable was still in charge of its little metal herd in Pikachu's Exciting Adventure! (SM126), rewarding the Meltan's good behaviour with a big bowl of hex nuts and telling Pikachu it had not seen Ash. That episode was its final physical appearance in the English dub.

Personality

Friendly, playful and endlessly helpful, Lusamine's Clefable is happiest looking after other people. Its bond with Lillie runs deepest of all, built up over years of childhood games, and it keeps the Ultra Guardians' base spotless. It is the kind of Pokémon that brings Professor Burnet a cup of coffee after a long research session.

Frustrated, she challenges Elaine anyway and leads with Clefable. Elaine's Pikachu dodges its Moonblast and knocks it out with a single Zippy Zap, the start of a defeat that ends with Green handing over her Mega Stones.

Ash & Clefable

Ash has never caught a Clefable, but he was there when the very first ones evolved at Mt. Moon (EP006). His closest brush came in Alola: under an Ultra Beast's control, Lusamine's Clefable turned on him and Lillie, and his Lycanroc had to block its Moonblast and Dazzling Gleam until Lillie could reach her old friend (SM053). Later, as caretaker of the Ultra Guardians' base, the same Clefable handed Ash the Beast Balls he used to catch Poipole (SM067).

Anime trivia

  • Clefable's debut in Clefairy and the Moon Stone (EP006) was also the first time the anime showed a Pokémon evolving with an evolution stone.
  • The Italian dub of EP006 renamed Clefable 'Cleferian'.
  • A Real Cleffa-Hanger (AG134) revisits the Mt. Moon Clefairy family eight years later, adding Cleffa to the group; in Japanese, the dance around the Moon Stone even reuses the music from EP006.
  • Lusamine's Clefable is voiced in Japanese by Megumi Hayashibara, Jessie's Japanese voice. In English the role passed from Kate Bristol to Sarah Natochenny, the voice of Ash, from SM085.
  • The anime has shown Magic Guard in action: Lusamine's Clefable waded through a lake of poison without a scratch while carrying Lillie and Snowy (SM054).
  • Clefable was the dub's Who's That Pokémon? in Show Me the Metal! (SM111), and the Japanese version's in the very next episode, Got Meltan? (SM112).
  • In its Unite Battle (HZ141), Clefable's Moonlight heals a teammate, just as the move does for Clefable in Pokémon UNITE, rather than restoring the user's own HP as in the main games.
  • The Meltan that Ash eventually caught and evolved into Melmetal came into his life after being chased out of the Ultra Guardians' base by Lusamine's Clefable (SM111).

“Clefable, an advanced form of Clefairy. These unique creatures are among the rarest Pokémon in the world.”

Clefable in the movies

1 film, 2 Pikachu shorts featuring Clefable.

Clefable has never had a starring role at the cinema, but it has been there from the start. Its first big-screen outing was Pikachu's Vacation, the 1998 short that opened for Mewtwo Strikes Back, where one enjoys a day out at the Pokémon Theme Park. It then waited almost twenty years for a feature film: in I Choose You! (2017) a Trainer's Clefable heads out of a Pokémon Center with everyone else when Entei is spotted nearby. It sits out Detective Pikachu, Secrets of the Jungle and the TV specials, but in 2025 it turned up in the audience of a POKÉTOON short.

A Trainer's Clefable

In this retelling of Ash's first journey, Ash is phoning his mum from a Pokémon Center when a Trainer bursts in, claiming to have just run into Entei. A Trainer's Clefable is among the Pokémon in the Center, and it heads off with its Trainer when Ash and the others rush out to look for the Legendary Pokémon.

Pikachu shorts

  • PK01Pikachu's Vacation (1998) · A Clefable at the Pokémon Theme Park
A Clefable is one of the holidaymakers at the Pokémon Theme Park, the Pokémon-only playground where Pikachu and friends spend their day off, and it pops up again in the animation for the short's Japanese closing song, Pika Pika Massaichu. The short opened for Mewtwo Strikes Back, so this was Clefable's first trip to the cinema.
  • PT19Another Day with Gardevoir (POKÉTOON) (2025) · A Clefable in a stadium crowd (cameo)
In this POKÉTOON web short, an overworked delivery driver called Yugo dreams of his old battles alongside Gardevoir, and a Clefable is watching from the stands during one of those flashback battles.

Clefable in the Pokémon TCG

40 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Clefable tiptoed into the card game in Jungle, a gleaming holo by Mitsuhiro Arita that waggled a finger and borrowed your opponent's best attack with Metronome. Erika's Clefable in Gym Heroes added Moon Impact, and that attack has stuck around for more than two decades, turning up again on Clefable ex in EX FireRed & LeafGreen and on later Clefable cards in HeartGold & SoulSilver, Call of Legends, Plasma Storm, Hidden Fates and Lost Origin. Along the way the fairy has worn three different types: Colorless until 2013, Fairy from Furious Fists in 2014, and Psychic since Rebel Clash in 2020, after the Fairy type left the card game.

The modern era has given Clefable a much bigger part. Clefable ex returned in Obsidian Flames with 260 HP and free retreats for your Psychic team, and in 2026 Perfect Order crowned it Mega Clefable ex, a 320 HP showpiece whose Special Illustration Rare by Cona Nitanda joins up with a matching Clefairy. The art has followed the hobby's changing tastes, from Arita's and Kagemaru Himeno's gentle, storybook early cards to glossy computer-rendered work and full-art Mega showpieces. Pokémon TCG Pocket brought back favourite illustrations from BREAKpoint, Hidden Fates, Rebel Clash and 151, plus a brand-new shiny Clefable. Players of the Japanese Game Boy sequel even met a Dark Clefable that was never printed on cardboard.

Cards to know

  • Jungle 1/64 — Where it all began: Mitsuhiro Arita's Clefable waggles a finger and borrows your opponent's best attack with Metronome. Early Unlimited holos even forgot the Jungle set symbol.
  • Gym Heroes 3/132 (Erika's Clefable) — Erika's elegant fairy can whisk your whole team back into your hand with Fairy Power, and it gave the card game Moon Impact, an attack Clefable keeps coming back to.
  • EX FireRed & LeafGreen 106/112 (Clefable ex) — Clefable's first ex, again by Arita: a two-Energy Metronome that copies any attack your opponent has, however costly.
  • Furious Fists 71/111 — The first Fairy-type Clefable, and fittingly the first to fire off Moonblast.
  • Obsidian Flames 082/197 (Clefable ex) — A 260 HP comeback whose Lunar Zone lets your whole Psychic team retreat for free, while Wondrous Moon hits for 170 and lets you rearrange your Psychic Energy.
  • Perfect Order 119/088 (Mega Clefable ex) — Cona Nitanda's Special Illustration Rare joins up with the Illustration Rare Clefairy to make one picture, a pair made to sit side by side in a binder.

Clefable in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

Clefable's manga debut is one of its loveliest moments. In The Electric Tale of Pikachu (1997), Ash, Bill and a Clefairy-costumed Professor Oak watch a moonlit evolution ceremony on Mt. Moon, and three new Clefable soar off into the night sky. Pokémon Adventures gives one to Green: Clefy evolves in the burning Silph Co. building, holds off the fused legendary birds with Metronome and later gets a chapter of its own, 'Clefabulous Clefable'. Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters plays it for laughs, with Red's Clefairy finally evolving and then turning back after scoffing too many Moon Stones, and Whitney's Clefable as a childhood friend who fell out with him over a bowl of noodles. In picture books Clefable wants Farfetch'd to conduct its music class and goes to Diglett's birthday party. It's also in the English Pokérap and Japan's Pokémon Ieru Kana?, and it was a Bandai Pokémon Kids figure back in 1997.

Manga

The Electric Tale of Pikachu ET03, 'Clefairy Tale' (1997): Clefable's manga debut
The Electric Tale of PikachuWild (the Mt. Moon Clefairy colony) · ET03 'Clefairy Tale' / volume 1 · 1997In Toshihiro Ono's manga Ash stumbles on a colony of Clefairy on Mt. Moon, where Professor Oak has been living in a Clefairy costume for three months. Under the full moon the colony holds an evolution ceremony: Bill and then Ash each use a Moon Stone, and three newly evolved Clefable soar off into the night sky while the humans cheer them on, close to tears. Only the bravest Clefairy evolve, Bill explains, because leaving the mountain means facing predators they've never met.
Pokémon Adventures PS033, 'The Winged Legends': Clefy evolves into Clefable
Pokémon AdventuresGreen (Clefy) · PS033 'The Winged Legends' / volume 3 · 1998Green's Clefairy, Clefy, evolves in the middle of the Silph Co. showdown. With the building ablaze and the fused bird Thu-Fi-Zer bearing down, Red spots the moon through a hole in the wall, remembers the Moon Stone Green had been after and uses it on Clefy, which hits back with a barrage of Metronome attacks, all the stronger for its evolution. Later it hears a familiar voice from inside its Poké Ball just before Team Rocket's Lt. Surge, Koga and Sabrina show up (PS069), and it gets a chapter named after it, 'Clefabulous Clefable' (PS084), in which it shrinks with Minimize to steal Lorelei's voodoo dolls until it trips and smashes them. Crystal (PS121) and an Idol (PS418) also own a Clefable in the series.
Pokémon AdventuresLusamine · PASM13 'Unleashing the Incredible Z-Move' / Sun & Moon volume 2Lusamine's Clefable first appears at Aether Paradise while a new Aether Foundation commercial is being filmed. In 'Darkness!! The Mysterious Claws of Necrozma!' (PASM29) it fights alongside the rest of her team against a Naganadel that the Ultra Recon Squad had befriended, which Lusamine wants to catch, and the Naganadel's poison knocks it out.
Pocket Monsters PM023, 'Clefairy Evolves... At Last?!'
Pokémon Pocket MonstersRed (his Clefairy, temporarily evolved) · PM023 'Clefairy Evolves… At Last?!' / volume 4 · 1998Kosaku Anakubo's slapstick Clefairy finally evolves on Cinnabar Island. Outmatched by a Vaporeon that has turned into a Flareon by touching a Fire Stone, it catches a Moon Stone thrown by Red, becomes a Clefable, and finishes Flareon with Flash and a slap nobody can identify. The glory doesn't last: after gobbling several more Moon Stones and looking very silly, it turns back into a Clefairy.
Pocket Monsters PM084, 'Fierce Battle Between Clefairy and Clefable'
Pokémon Pocket MonstersWhitney · PM084 'Fierce Battle Between Clefairy and Clefable' / volume 11 · 2001In Johto's Girls Town, Whitney sends out a Clefable that turns out to be Clefairy's childhood buddy. The two fell out years ago when Clefairy refused to share a bowl of noodles, and their rematch is pure Anakubo: they trade identical moves until both fall asleep, keep fighting as ghosts, and Clefairy wins by eating Clefable's ghost. Red leaves with the Plain Badge.
Pocket Monsters DP PMDP16, 'Clefairy's Surprising Great Evolution!'
Pocket Monsters DPWild · PMDP16 'Clefairy's Surprising Great Evolution!' / volume 2In the Diamond and Pearl sequel, a blinding flash of light from a Clefable sends Clefairy, Pikachu and Tyrogue tumbling off a cliff. The chapter title promises a great evolution, but the Clefable, Raichu and Hitmontop turn out to be wild Pokémon, not Red's team all grown up.

Clefable trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Clefable such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Clefable most likely blends 'clef', the musical symbol that opens a stave, with 'fable' – music and storybook magic rolled into one, and a neat echo of Clefairy's own 'clef' and 'fairy'. Its Japanese name is simpler still: ピクシー (Pikushī), officially written Pixy, borrowed from the pixie of folklore, a fitting step up from Clefairy's Japanese name, Pippi. Germany went the same way with Pixi, while France chose Mélodelfe, a blend of mélodie (melody) and elfe (elf) that keeps the musical theme. Before release, its working English name was 'Ariala'.

Design origins

Clefable looks like it skipped straight out of a storybook: a playful, magical, humanoid little being with wings, drawn from the fairies and pixies of European folklore. Its vaguely star-shaped body and the rumours of a home among the stars hint at an alien visitor, while its big ears, its moonlit habits and its Moon Stone evolution suggest the Moon rabbit of East Asian legend. Mega Clefable, added in Legends: Z-A, leans into the fairy tale: its curl becomes a beret- or crown-like hat, its eyes change colour and big butterfly-like wings shed sparkles like fairy dust – a transformation that feels straight out of a magical-girl anime. Its pink-to-yellow wing gradient and dark ear tips may even be a nod to Valerie, Kalos's Fairy-type Gym Leader.

  16. In Pokémon UNITE its Unite Move, Wonder Wish, hands out a random move – anything from a useless Splash to a full-blown Explosion or Hyper Beam.
