Synopsis
Passing a flower garden on the way to Floaroma Town, the friends see a Salamence fly overhead carrying a rider, and Dawn’s Pokédex identifies her as the notorious Pokémon Hunter J. J has come for the Gardevoir of a gardener named Melodi: her Ariados ties Melodi to a tree with String Shot, Gardevoir teleports away, and J tracks it with heat-sensing goggles before turning it to stone with the gun on her arm so that her henchmen can load it onto a lorry. While Brock and Dawn free Melodi, Ash and Pikachu cut the lorry off on a mountain road. J takes an interest in Pikachu, sends out Drapion, which dodges Volt Tackle, and has Ariados bind Ash to a boulder before she petrifies Pikachu and drives off with it.
Team Rocket decide to rob the robber, but J’s Salamence repels them with Hyper Beam, J petrifies the talking Meowth for her collection, and she escapes in an enormous airship. Dawn’s Pachirisu frees Ash with Spark, and Officer Jenny arrives with her Arcanine to explain J’s crimes. Brock suggests predicting J’s next target, and Melodi’s Kirlia uses Future Sight to reveal a waterwheel house by the river. Jenny’s officers surround the site and catch J stealing an Absol, but Salamence’s Hyper Beam defeats Arcanine and J escapes again. Ash clings to the underside of one of her vehicles, discovers Jessie and James hiding there too, and rides with them into J’s base, while aboard the ship Meowth, unfrozen, pretends he wants to join J’s crew.
Inside, Ash, Jessie, James and Aipom split up. Aipom finds Meowth and fetches Ash, but J realises there are intruders, refreezes Meowth and catches Ash with Drapion. Aipom’s Fury Swipes free him, but Drapion shrugs off Swift and Razor Leaf and hits Aipom and Turtwig with Cross Poison. Fleeing through the air vents, with Turtwig’s Razor Leaf picking off the henchmen, they reach the room holding Meowth, Pikachu and Gardevoir and free them. Pikachu’s Volt Tackle and Thunderbolt defeat a henchman’s Golbat and blow out the airlock, and Ash sends Staravia to fetch Jenny. J jettisons the pod carrying Ash, Pikachu and Team Rocket, but Gardevoir’s Teleport brings everyone safely to the ground, including the captured Absol and several henchmen, whom Jenny arrests. Team Rocket flee, and the friends watch the sunset, hoping J will one day be caught.
