01Overview

Meet Arcanine

Everything you need to know about the Legendary Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Arcanine's official title is the Legendary Pokémon – which is quite a claim for a Pokémon you can raise from a puppy. Touch a Growlithe with a Fire Stone and it grows into this magnificent great dog: an orange coat slashed with jagged black stripes, a shaggy cream mane spilling over its head, muzzle and chest, feathery tufts at its elbows and ankles, and a billowing tail with a kink in the middle. Two pointed fangs peek out from its upper jaw, and its paws end in three toes and soft pink pads.

What really sets it apart is speed. A fire blazes wildly inside its body, and that flame is the fuel for its legendary stamina: it is said to cover 10,000 km (6,200 miles) in a single day and night – roughly a quarter of the way around the Earth – running so lightly and gracefully that it seems to have wings. It roams open prairies, and it has been spotted bounding around active volcanoes too. Then there is the voice: its bark carries such majesty that anyone who hears it can't help but grovel.

“A Pokémon that is described in Chinese legends. It is said to race at an unbelievable speed.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996

Arcanine is fiercely brave and loyal, and people have been charmed by it for centuries. Its Pokédex entries read like a book of myths – a legendary Pokémon of China, a star of ancient Eastern folklore, captured on an ancient picture scroll racing through the prairies, even said to have fought alongside a general and conquered a whole country. Ultra Moon cheekily points out that for all the tales, there are far more Arcanine around than you'd expect.

In ancient Hisui the breed took a rockier path. Hisuian Arcanine is a Fire/Rock powerhouse with a grey, stony mane and a horn on its brow, and the noblest of them all – Lord Arcanine, the Lord of the Isles – presides over Firespit Island in Legends: Arceus as one of the region's revered noble Pokémon.

Fans have adored Arcanine since 1996. It is the ace of Blaine's Cinnabar Gym, the loyal partner of Gary Oak in the anime and the owner of Extreme Speed, its signature move in Generation II. It is also the perfect canine counterpart to Ninetales: two Fire Stone evolutions, a dog and a fox, forever split across rival game versions.

EvolutionEvolves from Hisuian Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone.

Long ago, Arcanine in Hisui made their homes on volcanic coastal mountainsides – and the landscape left its mark. Its coat burns a deeper red-orange, while its mane, muzzle, eyebrows, tail and the tufts at its elbows and ankles have turned grey, the fur toughened with igneous rock – fitting for its Fire/Rock typing. A large horn juts from the middle of its head with three little ones beside it, its cheek fur curls, its ankle tufts and tail billow like plumes of smoke, and its elbow fur sweeps back like wings. For all that bulk it moves like a dancer, feinting every which way and leading foes on a merry chase before snapping at them with fangs wreathed in flame.

One Hisuian Arcanine stands above the rest: Lord Arcanine, the Lord of the Isles, a noble Pokémon worshipped by the people of Hisui. He makes his home on Firespit Island in the Cobalt Coastlands under the eye of Palina, the Pearl Clan's Warden. His father, the old lord, lost his life at sea saving his Growlithe pup from drowning; the pup grew up to take his place, only for lightning from the space-time rift to drive him into a frenzy. Calm him at the Molten Arena with Volcano Balms, made from his favourite food, and you earn the Flame Plate.

Base stats total 555. In Generation I Arcanine had a single Special stat of 80; when Gold and Silver split Special in two, Sp. Def kept the 80 but Sp. Atk rose to 100, turning it into a genuine mixed attacker. Its other stats (90 HP, 110 Attack, 80 Defense, 95 Speed) have never changed. Hisuian Arcanine has the same 555 total but shifts five points each into HP and Attack (95 and 115) at the expense of Sp. Atk and Speed (95 and 90). Base friendship was 70 in Generations II–VII and has been 50 since Generation VIII; base experience yield was 213 in Generations I–IV and is 194 today. Spin-offs & cameos

Super Smash Bros.

Arcanine has never been a fighter, Poké Ball Pokémon or trophy, but it finally made it into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as spirit #435: a two-star (Advanced-class) support spirit that takes up two slots and grants Mouthful of Curry, the fire-breathing effect of Superspicy Curry. Its spirit battle is a lovely bit of casting – you face a giant, faster-than-normal Duck Hunt, dog and all, on the Battlefield form of Gaur Plain, with a lava floor nodding to Arcanine's fiery habitat. It can also be won on the Spirit Board or bought from the Vault shop for 1,000 gold.

Pokémon GO

Arcanine has been in Pokémon GO since launch in July 2016: catch a Growlithe, feed it Candy and you have one of the game's classic Fire-type attackers, with the line earning Candy every 3 km as a buddy. Its moves have been reshuffled over the years – in February 2017 Bite, Bulldoze and Flamethrower made way for Snarl, Wild Charge and Crunch alongside the ever-present Fire Fang and Fire Blast; Thunder Fang arrived in September 2019, Flamethrower returned that December, and Psychic Fangs (September 2022) and Scorching Sands (September 2023) followed – and Shadow and Purified Arcanine join the pack through Team GO Rocket. Hisuian Growlithe made its GO debut in 7 km Eggs during the Hisuian Discoveries event (27 July – 2 August 2022), opening the way to Fire/Rock Hisuian Arcanine, which hits a touch harder (232 Attack to the original's 227) and adds Rock Smash and Rock Slide to the family's moves. Shiny Hisuian Growlithe followed in the Out to Play event (27 September – 2 October 2023). The Growlithe family has yet to headline a Community Day.

Pokédex entry

Arcanine is #089 in the Pokopia Pokédex, which repeats the tale of an ancient picture scroll showing it racing through the prairies.

Moves

Arcanine began life in Red and Blue with four moves and nothing more to learn: Roar, Ember, Leer and Take Down, with Growlithe's Flamethrower lost for good if the Fire Stone came out too early. Gold and Silver gave it ExtremeSpeed at level 50, the dash that has defined it ever since. Later games nudged that move ever earlier and added new toys: Fire Fang and Thunder Fang in Diamond and Pearl, Flare Blitz as an egg move, Wild Charge and Snarl as TMs in Black and White, and Burn Up in Sun and Moon.

Sword and Shield flipped the script, handing Arcanine 18 moves at level 1 and Extreme Speed the moment it evolves, and Scarlet and Violet added Flamethrower at level 5 and 49 TMs. Meanwhile Legends: Arceus introduced the Fire- and Rock-type Hisuian Arcanine, which goes on a rampage with Raging Fury and, in Scarlet and Violet, swaps Play Rough for Rock Slide and Rock Throw and can hurl Stone Edge and Stealth Rock.

Signature moves

NormalExtreme Speed

Arcanine's calling card, a blur of a dash that strikes before almost anything else can move. It arrived at level 50 in Gold and Silver, crept down to 34 by Black 2 and White 2, and since Sword and Shield Arcanine learns it the moment it evolves; only Let's Go and Legends: Arceus leave it out.

FireFlare Blitz

A full-body fireball of a tackle. It debuted as an egg move in Diamond and Pearl, came with the Battle Series 2009 and North American International Championships 2017 event Arcanine, and has been a level 1 move since Sword and Shield.

FireFlamethrower

In Red and Blue only Growlithe could learn it, so trainers who reached for the Fire Stone too early missed out for good. Crystal's tutor fixed that, it was a TM from Ruby and Sapphire onwards, and in Scarlet and Violet Arcanine learns it at level 5.

FireFire Fang

A burning bite that has been one of Arcanine's starting moves in every generation since Diamond and Pearl (Let's Go aside), alongside a crackling Thunder Fang until Sword and Shield turned that into a TM.

FireBurn Up

The most dramatic move in the kit: an all-out blaze that burns away Arcanine's own Fire type. It was an egg move in Sun and Moon and a level 1 move in Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but Scarlet and Violet took it away.

FireRaging Fury (Hisuian Arcanine)

Hisuian Arcanine's fiery rampage, learned at level 29 in Legends: Arceus and level 64 in Scarlet and Violet, where an ordinary Arcanine can pick it up through breeding.

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow4 level-up · 18 TM/HM

Outside Japan, Growlithe only lives in Red and Yellow, so Blue players have to trade for an Arcanine; in Red, Yellow and the Japanese Blue you simply give a Growlithe a Fire Stone. Arcanine arrives knowing Roar, Ember, Leer and Take Down and never learns another move by levelling up, so Growlithe's Bite, Agility and Flamethrower have to be learned before the stone comes out. In Generations I to III a move's type decides whether it is physical or special, which makes every Fire move special and Normal moves such as Take Down physical.

Gold and Crystal have Growlithe to evolve, while Silver players have to trade. Flame Wheel replaces Ember among the starting moves, and ExtremeSpeed, the lightning dash that would become Arcanine's calling card, arrives at level 50. Breeding brings Crunch, Fire Spin, Safeguard, Thrash and Body Slam (which needs chain breeding), and Crystal's move tutor teaches Flamethrower directly. Bite, Ember and Agility can still only come from Growlithe, as can Flamethrower in Gold and Silver.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (plus Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness)5 level-up · 22 TM/HM · 7 egg · 9 tutor

There is no Arcanine to be found in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, LeafGreen or Pokémon Colosseum, but FireRed lets you evolve a Growlithe, and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness has a Shadow Growlithe to snag, purify and evolve. Bite, Ember and Odor Sleuth join Roar as starting moves and ExtremeSpeed slips to level 49. Flamethrower and Overheat become TMs, Torkoal can pass on Heat Wave, and the move tutors of FireRed, LeafGreen, Emerald and Pokémon XD add Body Slam, Double-Edge, Swagger and more. Charm is the curiosity: only the purified Shadow Growlithe from Pokémon XD knows it.

Diamond, Pearl, Platinum and HeartGold all have Growlithe to evolve, while SoulSilver players must trade. This is the first generation in which every move has its own physical, special or status category. Thunder Fang and Fire Fang join the starting moves and ExtremeSpeed drops to level 39. Flare Blitz debuts as an egg move, Espeon can pass on Morning Sun in HeartGold and SoulSilver, and the move tutors of Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver add Heat Wave, Helping Hand, Iron Head, Mud-Slap, Snore and Swift, plus Headbutt in HeartGold and SoulSilver. The Battle Series 2009 Arcanine handed out in South Korea came with Crunch and Flare Blitz.

Black and White have no Arcanine at all, but Black 2 and White 2 let you evolve a Growlithe. The level-up list stays the same apart from ExtremeSpeed, which comes at level 39 in Black and White and at 34 in Black 2 and White 2, hence the two level columns. New TMs include Flame Charge, Incinerate, Retaliate, Wild Charge and Snarl; Close Combat, Covet and Double Kick join the egg moves (Iron Tail needs chain breeding); and Black 2 and White 2's move tutors add Outrage, Dragon Pulse, Iron Head and Iron Tail. A Growlithe from the Dream World could bring Endure along.

Every Alolan game lets you evolve a Growlithe. The level-up list matches X and Y's, while the TM list loses Dig, Incinerate, Retaliate, Rock Smash, Secret Power and Strength, which now have to come from older games or, in Retaliate's case, from Growlithe. Burn Up, a blaze so fierce that it burns away Arcanine's own Fire type, joins the egg moves via the Cyndaquil family, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's tutors add Laser Focus. The North American International Championships 2017 Arcanine came with Flare Blitz.

Let's Go keeps things short and sweet: Arcanine's level-up list is just Double-Edge, Bite, Roar, Ember and Leer, all at level 1, so Take Down, Agility, Heat Wave, Crunch and Flare Blitz have to be learned as Growlithe. There is no breeding and there are no move tutors. Its 20 TMs include Superpower, Play Rough, Outrage and a Solar Beam that hits for a whopping 200 power in these games.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl19 level-up · 73 TM/HM · 18 egg · 1 tutor

One level-up list serves Sword, Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and it is generous: 18 moves at level 1, from Bite and Howl to Burn Up, Play Rough and Flare Blitz, with Extreme Speed learned the moment Arcanine evolves. Sword and Shield teach moves through 23 TMs and 21 TRs, Psychic Fangs and Close Combat among them, and the Expansion Pass tutor adds Scorching Sands; Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have their own list of 29 TMs. Breeding differs too, with five egg moves in Sword and Shield and thirteen in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, where Burn Up can be passed down. A few old moves, such as Odor Sleuth, Return and Hidden Power, cannot be used in Sword and Shield even by an Arcanine brought over from an older game.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Only Hisuian Arcanine appears in Legends: Arceus; the familiar Fire-type Arcanine cannot be obtained there.

Hisuian ArcanineFireRock

Hisuian Arcanine is part Rock type, and its moves in Hisui show it: Rock Slide at level 21 and the rampaging Raging Fury at 29, before Double-Edge at 37 and Flare Blitz at 47. Moves work differently here: each is learned at one level and mastered at a higher one, after which it can be used in strong or agile style, so power is listed for normal, strong and agile style and accuracy for normal and strong style. There are no TMs or breeding; the move tutor teaches 18 moves, including Stone Edge, Play Rough and Wild Charge.

Scarlet and Violet keep Sword and Shield's generous approach: 15 moves at level 1, Extreme Speed on evolving and Flamethrower at level 5, though Burn Up has gone. Raging Fury can now be inherited from Hisuian Arcanine or Infernape, and the 49 TMs bring Temper Flare, Heat Crash, Scorching Sands, Tera Blast and even Charm. Arcanine in the anime

Debut EP063The Battle Of The Badge · Its appearances on screen, and 7 other trainers who raised one.

Arcanine has never been one of Ash's Pokémon, yet for nearly three decades it has been the anime's shorthand for a Trainer who means business. It burst onto the screen as Gary's prized partner at the Viridian Gym, torching Giovanni's Kingler before Mewtwo swatted it aside (EP063), and it went on to test Ash at the Indigo Plateau, the Silver Conference and the Battle Dome, where Frontier Brain Tucker paired it with Swampert (AG153).

Away from the battlefield it is the loyal workhorse of the Pokémon world: couriers ride it across Johto, Sinnoh's Officer Jennys take it on patrol, and Drew and May once chased a wild Arcanine through the Kanto countryside only to find it had three Growlithe pups to feed (AG139). Gary's Arcanine later returned for a raid on Articuno (JN102), and Pokémon Horizons has given the species a starring role as the faithful partner of Liko's grandmother Diana, the great dog that carries her from one adventure to the next.

Other trainers’ Arcanine

Gary's Arcanine
Gary
rival (Indigo League to Journeys)
Arcanine

First seen: EP063The Battle Of The Badge

Gary's Arcanine made a dazzling entrance at the Viridian Gym, shrugging off a type disadvantage to beat Giovanni's Kingler with Take Down, Fire Spin and Fire Blast, only for the Gym Leader's armoured Mewtwo to fling it about with Psychic and leave Gary baffled (EP063). In Johto it towed Gary's skateboard through the Extreme Pokémon Race and blasted Team Rocket away with Flame Wheel, though Ash and Bayleef pipped them in a photo finish (EP228), and at the Silver Conference it fell to a Hyper Beam from Ash's Snorlax (EP270). When Gary turned researcher it stayed behind with his grandfather, but it was back by his side in Journeys, the last Pokémon standing after Articuno's Blizzard until Sheer Cold finally froze it (JN102).

Diana's Arcanine
Diana
Liko's grandmother, veteran adventurer (Pokémon Horizons)
Growlithe → Arcanine

First seen: HZ003For Sure! 'Cause Sprigatito's with Me!

Liko's grandmother Diana is a seasoned adventurer, and Arcanine is her long-time partner: it was a Growlithe when she was young and evolved on her travels. It is the first to greet Liko at the ancient castle where she finally finds her grandmother (HZ024), holds off the Explorers and carries Diana in one mighty leap onto the Brave Olivine's wing deck (HZ025), and doubles as a fearsome sparring partner for the Rising Volt Tacklers. Liko and Roy needed every trick just to land a single Scratch on it (HZ033), and Liko's Terastallized Floragato finally beat it (HZ074), but alongside Wash Rotom it took down Meowscarada and Charcadet together (HZ108). In the final push into Laqua it carried Diana, Liko, Ann and Captain Pikachu towards the heart of Laqua (HZ133).

Tucker's Arcanine
Tucker
Frontier Brain (Battle Dome, Battle Frontier)
Arcanine

First seen: AG153Tactics Theatrics!!

Tucker, the Battle Dome's crowd-pleasing Frontier Brain, built his Double Battle with Ash around Arcanine's speed and Swampert's sturdiness. Swampert shielded its partner with Protect while Arcanine darted about with Extreme Speed and even used Aerial Ace without a wing to its name, and Swampert's Water Pulse and Arcanine's Fire Blast combined into the spectacular fusion of fire and water promised by the Japanese title. It still wasn't enough: Swellow dodged so that Arcanine slammed into its own teammate, and a Crabhammer and an Aerial Ace landing at the same moment knocked out both of Tucker's Pokémon, winning Ash the Tactics Symbol (AG153). Arcanine later popped up again in flashbacks (AG182, DP128).

Keegan and Ramona
courier siblings (The Johto League Champions)
Arcanine (three, including Keegan's Arcky)

First seen: EP190The Stolen Stones!

Ramona and her younger brother Keegan run a courier service on Arcanine-back, and their pack of three, Keegan's Arcky among them, first gallops in to rescue Ash, Misty and Brock from a rockslide on the road to Olivine City. They were carrying Fire Stones to a Fire-type Pokémon contest when Team Rocket stole the stones, and soon Pikachu too. Keegan taught Ash to ride and to treat his Arcanine as a partner, and that night Ash's mount followed Pikachu's scent straight to Team Rocket's camp. The Arcanine then charged up Onix like a ramp to set the villains' balloon alight, and the Fire Stones arrived just in time (EP190).

Pete Pebbleman
Indigo Plateau Conference competitor (Indigo League)
Arcanine

First seen: EP076Fire and Ice

Pete Pebbleman was Ash's third-round opponent at the Indigo Plateau, and his Arcanine had a plan for the Ice Field. It sidestepped Kingler's Bubble and caught it in an icy twister of Dragon Rage, then fired Fire Blast after Fire Blast at a nimble Pikachu, not to hit it but to melt the ice. The trick backfired: Pikachu dived into the meltwater and a Thunderbolt through the water knocked Arcanine out, sending Ash through to the fourth round (EP076).

Officer Jenny
recurring character (Diamond and Pearl)
Arcanine

First seen: DP020Mutiny in the Bounty!

Officer Jenny is usually seen with a Growlithe, but in Sinnoh some Jennys have graduated to Arcanine. One Jenny and her Arcanine went after Pokémon Hunter J only to arrive too late, and when Jenny moved to arrest the hunter, J's Salamence blasted through Arcanine's Flamethrower with Hyper Beam and knocked it out (DP020). Another Jenny's Arcanine turns up in Marble's memories, stepping in to stop a crook when Luxray's electric attack failed, which left Luxray thoroughly put out (DP059).

Marley's Arcanine
Marley
guest character (Sinnoh League Victors)
Arcanine

First seen: DP168Keeping In Top Forme!

Dreamy, softly spoken Marley spent Keeping In Top Forme! escorting a Shaymin on the run from Team Rocket to the Gracidea Flower Garden, and her Arcanine was the muscle behind the quiet. Flashbacks show it sending Team Rocket blasting off with Flamethrower the first time they came after Shaymin, and helping Marley give them the slip when they caught up with her again (DP168).

Ash & Arcanine

Ash has never caught an Arcanine, but he has faced some formidable ones. Pete Pebbleman's Arcanine tried to melt the Ice Field out from under him at the Indigo Plateau before Pikachu won (EP076), Snorlax flattened Gary's with Hyper Beam at the Silver Conference (EP270) and Corphish and Swellow outlasted Tucker's at the Battle Dome (AG153). His warmest moment with one came in Johto, when he learned to ride one of Keegan and Ramona's courier Arcanine and it tracked Pikachu down by scent (EP190).

Featured episodes

  • AG139On Cloud ArcanineDrew and May both set their hearts on a speedy wild Arcanine that had started coming down from the mountains near a Kanto town, but it left Flygon and Combusken standing with Extreme Speed and sent Squirtle packing with Roar. When they finally tracked it down they found it feeding three Growlithe pups, and after Flygon freed the whole family from Team Rocket's nets, the rivals agreed to let the parent go.

Anime trivia

  • Arcanine is the Who's That Pokémon? in its debut episode, The Battle Of The Badge (EP063), but only in Japan: English-speaking viewers were quizzed on Mr. Mime instead. The same thing happened in The Stolen Stones! (EP190), where the dub used Gloom.
  • In its first battle, Gary's Arcanine used Fire Spin, a move Arcanine could not learn in the games until Generation II.
  • In the Japanese version of The Battle Of The Badge, Gary sends Arcanine out with a fond 'my honey', a line the English dub dropped.
  • Ash's Pokédex introduces Arcanine as 'a Legendary Pokémon', a nod to its official category, the Legendary Pokémon, even though Arcanine is not a Legendary at all.
  • Diana's Arcanine has the Hidden Ability Justified, which kicked in when Liko's Floragato hit it with the Dark-type Sucker Punch (HZ074).

“Arcanine, a Legendary Pokémon. The evolved form of Growlithe. Arcanine is known for its bravery and fierce loyalty. Growlithe evolves into Arcanine through its use of a Fire Stone.”

Arcanine in the movies

2 films and 1 special featuring Arcanine.

Arcanine has never had a film to itself, but it has a knack for memorable walk-ons. Gary's Arcanine makes its big-screen debut in Mewtwo Strikes Back (1998) as one of the challengers Mewtwo flattens at the Viridian Gym, and the 2019 CGI remake, Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, brings the moment back in 3D. Its oddest outing is the 2006 special The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, in which Dr. Yung's Mirage Mewtwo turns its own hand into a fire-breathing Arcanine head and aims a Flamethrower at Professor Oak.

Gary's Arcanine (with his Nidoking)

Arcanine's big-screen debut is brief but memorable. In the flashback to Mewtwo's days as Giovanni's armoured enforcer, the Viridian Gym becomes a place where challengers go to lose, and Gary is one of them: his Arcanine and Nidoking are brushed aside by Mewtwo's psychic power. The scene replays Gary's Gym battle from The Battle of the Badge (EP063) from Mewtwo's side, redrawn so that only its eyes glow when it uses Psychic, while Giovanni never gets out of his chair.

Gary's Arcanine (with his Nidoking)

The CGI remake keeps the moment. Gary once again sends Arcanine and Nidoking against Giovanni's Gym, and once again Mewtwo's psychic power overwhelms them. It is still only a glimpse from Mewtwo's point of view, but this time Gary's partner arrives in full 3D.

TV specials

  • The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon (2006)
Arcanine's strangest screen role isn't really an Arcanine at all. Right after bidding Professor Oak goodbye, Dr. Yung has his Mirage Mewtwo morph its hand into an Arcanine's head, which breathes a Flamethrower straight at the professor. The special aired in the US first, five and a half months before its Japanese broadcast.

06Trading Card Game · every card

Arcanine in the Pokémon TCG

56 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Arcanine has been charging across the card table since the very beginning. It was in Japan's first Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reached English players in Base Set in January 1999: a hefty 100 HP Stage 1 that hit hard and singed itself doing it. That reckless streak has never gone away. Blaine's Arcanine hit for 120 in Gym Challenge, and Heat Tackle, the self-damaging charge it introduced, keeps coming back. In between came the soft-hearted Light Arcanine, e-Reader cards in Aquapolis and Skyridge, an EX-era Arcanine ex, Team Galactic's Arcanine G and a promo-only Arcanine BREAK. Then in 2022 Hisuian Arcanine arrived as a Fighting-type bruiser with a Pokémon V of its own, and Scarlet & Violet brought back Arcanine ex as a 280 HP Terastallised giant. Arcanine has never had a GX, VMAX or Mega card, but the family tree is plenty big without them.

The art tells its own story. Ken Sugimori drew four of the early cards, including the very first, and the late 1990s and early 2000s brought in Kagemaru Himeno, Atsuko Nishida, Kyoko Umemoto and Aya Kusube. Later came 5ban Graphics' glossy CGI for the BREAK, V and ex cards, and MPC Film's photorealistic Arcanine for the Detective Pikachu set. Modern illustrators put Arcanine in real places: Shin Nagasawa set it against Cinnabar Island, You Iribi put the Hisuian form beside Rei on Firespit Island, and REND's artwork won the 2022 Illustration Contest outright. Pokémon TCG Pocket keeps the legend running, giving classic pieces by kodama, match and Yuu Nishida a second life and adding PLANETA Saito's Arcanine ex, the card guaranteed to new players who open a Pikachu pack first.

  • Gym Challenge 1/132 (Blaine's Arcanine) — Firestorm hits for 120 damage, a huge number for its time.
  • EX Sandstorm 15/100 — One of 46 Sandstorm cards that reached English players before Japan.
  • SWSH304 — Fan art made official: REND's painting won the Grand Prize in the 2022 Illustration Contest.

Arcanine in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

In print, Arcanine is everybody's loyal heavyweight. In Pokémon Adventures, Archy, the Extreme Speed sprinter that once ran wild on Mt. Mortar, becomes Crystal's hot-headed steed, while Blaine, Blue, Marley and a young Trainer called Evan all keep one too. In The Electric Tale of Pikachu it is Gary's ride of choice, and in Pokémon Zensho and Pocket Monsters it fights for Blaine, not always successfully.

On the bookshelf, Gary's Arcanine trades embers with Ash's Charizard in Scholastic's Talent Showdown, and a wild one poses for Todd's camera in the Pokémon Snap novel. Arcanine also races beside Ash and Pikachu in the anime's first opening and gets a name-check in the Pokérap.

Manga

Pokémon Adventures PS026, 'Holy Moltres': Arcanine's debut in the series
Pokémon AdventuresBlaine · PS026 'Holy Moltres' / volume 2 · 1997Arcanine arrives in Pokémon Adventures at full gallop: on the coast near Cinnabar Island it bounds into battle beside Blaine's Rapidash to take on a gang of Team Rocket Grunts. It's a brief appearance, and its moves are never revealed.
Pokémon Adventures PS064, 'Putting It on the Line...Against Arcanine'
Pokémon AdventuresEvan · PS064 'Putting It on the Line…Against Arcanine' / volume 5 · 1999In the Yellow chapters, a young Trainer called Evan is target-practising on a bridge near Cinnabar Island: his Haunter hurls stones and his Arcanine fires Ember at them. The practice is really training for Blaine's hidden Mewtwo, as an unseen force keeps knocking the stones aside and the bald man watching turns out to be Blaine himself.
Pokémon Adventures PS116, 'Rock, Paper...Scizor', in which Blue catches his Arcanine
Pokémon AdventuresBlue · PS116 'Rock, Paper…Scizor' / volume 9 · 2001When League music blaring from a Pokémon Association van's radio sends a pack of wild Pokémon on a rampage and sets off an earthquake, Blue rounds them all up: Exeggutor, Alakazam, Rhydon and an Arcanine. The newcomers are kept at his Viridian Gym, and by The Last Battle XIV (PS180) the Arcanine, a little quick-tempered by nature, has reached level 71.
Pokémon AdventuresCrystal (Archy) · PS117 'Slugging It Out with Slugma' / volume 10 · 2001Archy is Crystal's hot-headed speedster and main ride, with Extreme Speed to match. 'Lively Larvitar' (PS135) tells how they met: a wild Arcanine, maddened by an injured eye, once attacked Crystal on Mt. Mortar and left her arms in splints, until a friendly Parasect numbed the wound with spores and its fury melted away. Archy later carries Bonee into the chase for Suicune (PS131), and when the Larvitar that injured it comes back to attack its blind right side, Crystal catches the culprit.
Pokémon Adventures PS417, 'Leaping Past Lopunny', where Marley's Arcanine debuts
Pokémon AdventuresMarley · PS417 'Leaping Past Lopunny' / volume 38 · 2011Marley debuts at the Battleground in the Survival Area, ordering a Flare Blitz from her Arcanine against Buck's Claydol. The battle never gets a result, because Buck spots Looker spying on them and gives chase, much to Marley's annoyance. Her Arcanine later takes on Jupiter's Tangrowth in the Distortion World.
Pokémon Pocket Monsters PM024, 'Fierce Competition at the Pokémon Quiz Battle!!'
Pokémon Pocket MonstersBlaine; later Red · PM024 'Fierce Competition at the Pokémon Quiz Battle!!' / volume 4 · 1998In Kosaku Anakubo's comedy series, Arcanine first turns up on Blaine's side: he sends one out when his Pokémon Quiz Battle reaches its battle round. Much later, 'The Pokémon Banana League (Part 1)' (PM054, volume 8) reveals that Red has caught an Arcanine of his own.
Pokémon Zensho PZ08: Blaine's Arcanine takes on Satoshi's Charmeleon at the Cinnabar Gym
Pokémon ZenshoBlaine · PZ08 / volume 1 · 1998Satomi Nakamura's series makes Arcanine Blaine's main battler, and it meets its match in the Cinnabar Gym. Blaine is puzzled that Satoshi hasn't brought a Water type, but Arcanine's Fire Spin does nothing to Satoshi's Charmeleon, which wins with a single blow, earns the Volcano Badge and evolves into Charizard on the spot.
The Electric Tale of Pikachu ET19, 'Side Story: Ash vs. Gary'
The Electric Tale of PikachuGary · ET19 'Side Story: Ash vs. Gary' / volume 4Toshihiro Ono's Gary relies on Arcanine, mostly as his ride. In this side story it helps him try to catch a giant Slowpoke and then tracks down Team Rocket after they steal it, but taking on the Slowpoke goes badly: Arcanine ends up frozen solid by an Ice Beam.

Pokémon Snap (Pathways to Adventure, book 2)novelSybex · 1999This 101-page retelling of the photo-safari game weaves playing tips into Todd's story. Armed with Pester Balls, Todd heads back to the Volcano and finally gets pictures of Growlithe, Arcanine and Charizard.
Talent Showdown (Pokémon Chapter Book, #14)chapter bookScholastic · 2000Published in November 2000, this one gives Gary's Arcanine a proper fight on the page. Gary sends it out against Ash's Charizard, which won't battle until it's provoked; on Gary's orders Arcanine showers it with burning embers, but just before Charizard's flames can engulf it, Gary calls Arcanine back and sends out Alakazam instead.

Arcanine trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Arcanine such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Arcanine most likely fuses 'arcane' – ancient, mysterious, the stuff of legend – with 'canine', a neat summary of a dog that Pokédex after Pokédex places in old Chinese tales. Its Japanese name, Windie (ウインディ), comes from 'wind' or 'windy' and is all about its speed: this is the Pokémon that can cross 10,000 km in a day and night, and Extreme Speed was its signature move in Generation II. Other languages run with both ideas – the Chinese 風速狗 Fēngsùgǒu means 'wind-speed dog', while the German Arkani blends 'arcane', the Latin canis (dog) and Vulkan (volcano). Back in development, its English name was going to be Blaze.

Design origins

Ken Sugimori designed Arcanine, and a 1990 sprite sheet from the days when the games were still called Capsule Monsters shows an early version with no stripes – and hooves instead of paws. The finished creature looks to the guardian lion-dogs of East Asia: the Ryukyuan shisa and the Japanese komainu, part lion and part dog, often given dragon-like touches, whose statues stand in pairs to welcome good spirits and keep evil ones out. Since its earliest Pokédex entries place it in China, the Chinese guardian lion may be the most direct ancestor of all. Its striped orange coat recalls a tiger, and brindle, 'tiger-striped' dog breeds such as the Kai Ken may have played a part too. Hisuian Arcanine, designed by Megumi Mizutani along with Hisuian Growlithe, leans even further into those temple guardians: its Rock type and craggy grey mane echo stone komainu statues, while its curling ankle fur and tail look like plumes of smoke.

Did you know?

  1. Despite its official category, the Legendary Pokémon, Arcanine isn't a true Legendary – though the anime's second episode, Pokémon Emergency!, shows it in an engraving of 'Legendary Pokémon' alongside Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres.
  2. Arcanine is Ninetales's mirror image: both are pure Fire-type final evolutions from Generation I that evolve with a Fire Stone, can have Flash Fire, belong to the Field Egg Group and have a regional form – and Arcanine is 75% male where Ninetales is 75% female.
  3. The pair are version rivals too: Growlithe has been the pick of Red, Gold, FireRed, HeartGold, Let's Go, Pikachu! and Brilliant Diamond, while Vulpix lives in their partner versions.
  4. Arcanine's very first Pokédex entry, in the Japanese Red and Green, describes it as a creature of Chinese legend – and many later entries kept the link, from Yellow's 'legendary Pokémon in China' to Sun's 'ancient Eastern folklore'.
  5. Ultra Moon's entry gently teases its reputation: there are so many old tales about Arcanine that they're called legendary Pokémon, 'but there are way more of them around than you'd expect.'
  6. Its 10,000 km a day works out at an average of more than 400 km/h, around the clock.
  7. During development of Red and Green, Arcanine's English name was 'Blaze'.
  8. An early 1990 sprite sheet shows Arcanine with hooves and no stripes.
  9. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus's internal data, Hisuian Arcanine's Hidden Ability is listed as Justified rather than Rock Head.
  10. The Japanese printing of its Base Set card misspells its name as ウィンディ, with a small ィ in place of イ – a slip repeated in Japan's Game Boy card games.
  11. In Legends: Arceus, the late noble Arcanine – who died at sea saving his pup – has a grave at Veilstone Cape.
  12. In Pokémon Sleep, an Arcanine that finds a supremely comfortable spot is said to sleep like an innocent child.
  13. Before Generation VII, Cantonese media called it 奉神犬 – roughly 'the dog that serves a deity'.
