Black & White—Dragons Exalted, released on August 15, 2012, made history: it introduced the Dragon type to the Pokémon TCG. For years, Pokémon like Dragonite, Salamence and Rayquaza had been shoehorned into Colorless or other types on their cards. Dragons Exalted finally gave them a category of their own — a whole new type, arriving with a roar. (The site files this set under the spelling “Exhalted,” but its official name is Dragons Exalted.)
At 128 cards, the set was a showcase for its new stars, packing six Pokémon-EX and a horde of Dragon-type Pokémon, plus new Special Energy and Trainer cards built to support them. And it arrived with one of the era’s most beloved competitive decks in tow — following straight on from Dark Explorers.
The dragons had arrived.
The Time of Dragons Is Now! Can You Command Them?
The might of dragons is yours to control in a way that can change your game forever—as a brand-new Energy type! Rayquaza, Giratina, Hydreigon. Few Pokémon inspire awe and wonder like Dragon-type Pokémon, and in the Dragons Exalted expansion, they come ready to rule the game! And with a grand mix of all-new Pokémon-EX and a horde of Dragon-type Pokémon to take to the skies and take the battlefield by storm, plus new Trainer cards and new Special Energy cards, you’ll be ready for the roar of dragons and the glory of battle!
— official Dragons Exalted expansion blurb
The Dragon Type Arrives
The Dragon type’s debut came with a clever twist. Unlike every other type in the game, Dragon Pokémon had no Energy of their own — there was no “Dragon Energy” to attach. Instead, Dragon-type attacks were paid for with combinations of other types’ Energy, a design quirk that made Dragon decks inherently multi-coloured and gave the set’s new Special Energy cards a real reason to exist.
The type’s flagship was Rayquaza-EX (85), a 170-HP Dragon whose Dragon Burst attack discarded all of one basic Energy type attached to it and dealt a colossal 60 damage for each card discarded. Loaded up with Energy and then unleashed, it could hit for numbers few Pokémon could survive — the heart of the famous “RayEels” deck, which used Eelektrik’s Dynamotor to pile Lightning Energy onto Rayquaza before letting it rip.
Fittingly, Rayquaza-EX also headlined the set’s Full Art secret rares (123), one of the signature chase cards of the format.
Rayquaza-EX (85/124)
The Dragon type’s flagship. Celestial Roar digs Energy off the top of your deck, then Dragon Burst discards all of one basic Energy type for a huge 60 damage each — the engine of the beloved “RayEels” deck.
Rayquaza-EX — Full Art (123/124)
The ultra-rare Full Art print of the set’s star Dragon — edge-to-edge sky-serpent art, and one of the most coveted chase cards of the era.
Dragon Engines
Two more Dragons anchored the set’s best strategies. Hydreigon (97) wasn’t an attacker so much as an engine: its Dark Trance Ability let you move Darkness Energy freely between your Pokémon, as often as you liked, each turn. Paired with the previous set’s Darkrai-EX, it created “Darkrai/Hydreigon” — a deck that could shuttle Energy around the board and attack from anywhere.
Giratina-EX (92), a beefy 180-HP Dragon, brought raw power. Its Shred attack dealt 90 that ignored any protective effects on the target — cutting straight through the defensive tools of the day — while Dragon Pulse hit for 130. It was a reliable, hard-to-block heavy hitter.
Hydreigon (97/124)
The Darkness engine on a Dragon. Dark Trance moves Darkness Energy between your Pokémon as often as you like — the heart of “Darkrai/Hydreigon,” a deck that could attack from anywhere.
Giratina-EX (92/124)
A hard-to-block 180-HP Dragon. Shred deals 90 that ignores any effects protecting the Defending Pokémon, and Dragon Pulse follows up for 130 — reliable, unstoppable power.
Garbodor’s Ability Lock
One of Dragons Exalted’s most influential cards had nothing to do with dragons. Garbodor (54) carried the Garbotoxin Ability: “If this Pokémon has a Pokémon Tool card attached to it, each Pokémon in play, in each player’s hand, and in each player’s discard pile has no Abilities (except for Garbotoxin).” Attach a single Tool, and every Ability in the game — yours excepted — simply switched off.
In a format increasingly built on powerful Abilities like Dark Trance and Eelektrik’s Dynamotor, that was devastating. Garbodor became the great equaliser: a tech card that could gut an opponent’s entire engine in a single move, and a fixture of the competitive scene for years.
Garbodor (54/124)
The great equaliser. Attach any Pokémon Tool and Garbotoxin switches off every other Ability in the game — a single card that could shut down an opponent’s whole engine.
More Pokémon-EX
Beyond the dragons, the set’s Pokémon-EX offered wildly different tools. Mew-EX (46) was the ultimate toolbox: its Versatile Ability let it use the attacks of any Pokémon in play — yours or your opponent’s — turning a single 120-HP Basic into a copy of whatever the board offered.
Terrakion-EX (71), a 180-HP Fighting powerhouse, combined offence with acceleration — Pump-up Smash hit for 90 and attached two Energy from your hand to your Bench, building your next threat while it attacked. Alongside Ho-Oh-EX and Registeel-EX, the set’s EX lineup gave nearly every deck something to reach for.
Mew-EX (46/124)
The ultimate toolbox. Versatile lets Mew-EX use the attacks of any Pokémon in play — yours or your opponent’s — so one small Basic can become a copy of whatever the battlefield offers.
Terrakion-EX (71/124)
Offence with acceleration. Rock Tumble ignores Resistance, and Pump-up Smash hits for 90 while attaching two Energy from your hand to your Bench — powering up your next attacker as it strikes.
Print Versions
Dragons Exalted came in four booster arts — Rayquaza, Giratina, Terrakion and Gyarados. Every pack was a shot at one of the six Pokémon-EX, a Full Art version, a Dragon-type Pokémon, or the set’s spectacular secret-rare Rayquaza.

The Secret Rayquaza
The set saved its most beautiful card for last. Rayquaza (128) — a non-EX, secret-rare print numbered 128/124 — sat beyond the end of the set as an Ultra Rare Secret, its serpentine body coiling across a full-art holographic frame. It has remained one of the most iconic and collectible cards of the entire Black & White era.
Deeper in the set, a pair of practical new cards rounded things out: the two Blend Energy cards each provided four different types of Energy for attacks — perfect for the multi-coloured Dragon decks — while Tool Scrapper let you discard Pokémon Tools from play, a direct answer to Garbodor’s Garbotoxin and the era’s defensive Tools.
Rayquaza (128/124)
The set’s crown jewel: a non-EX secret-rare Rayquaza, its serpentine body coiling across a full-art holographic frame. One of the most iconic collector cards of the Black & White era.
For Collectors: Most Valuable Cards
Released August 2012, Dragons Exalted (BW6) reintroduced Dragon-type Pokémon to the English TCG, and its EX and Full Art chases stay among the most collected Black & White cards. Rayquaza-EX headlines the set, with low-population gem-mint copies commanding five-figure premiums.
Most Powerful Cards (Competitive Play)
In the 2012-2013 Modified format, Dragons Exalted reshaped competitive play, delivering the era’s best attacker in Rayquaza-EX plus pillars like Hydreigon, Garbodor, and Bouffalant, whose speed, Ability disruption, and single-prize efficiency touched nearly every top deck.
Trivia
- Black & White—Dragons Exalted, released in August 2012, introduced the Dragon type to the Pokémon TCG.
- Dragon-type Pokémon have no Energy of their own; their attacks are paid with combinations of other types’ Energy.
- Rayquaza-EX anchored the popular “RayEels” deck, pairing its Dragon Burst with Eelektrik’s Energy acceleration.
- Garbodor’s Garbotoxin Ability could switch off every other Ability in play with a single Pokémon Tool attached.
- Its secret-rare Rayquaza (128/124) is one of the most sought-after collector cards of the Black & White era.
