01Overview

Meet Persian

Everything you need to know about the Classy Cat Pokémon — the creature behind the number.

Persian is the Classy Cat Pokémon, the sleek evolution of Meowth from level 28 – and it knows exactly how good it looks. Tall and long-legged, it wears a pale tan coat, black-rimmed rounded ears and a gleaming red jewel in the middle of its forehead. Six bold whiskers fan out from its face, a pair of sharp fangs peeps from its upper jaw, its red eyes have narrow slit pupils, and its long tail ends in a tidy curl.

Everything about it is built for the hunt. Lithe muscles let it walk without making a sound, claws slide out of its three-toed paws, and its thick whiskers are so sensitive to air movement that it can track prey by the faintest stir. It talks in body language too: when that tail shoots straight up, it is about to pounce and bite. Grab it by the whiskers, though, and – for reasons nobody quite understands – it turns meek and docile.

“Has a vicious temperament. Beware if it raises its tail straight up. It is a signal that it is about to pounce and bite.”

Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan) & FireRed · 1996

Its personality is pure diva. Persian is haughty and fickle, lashing out with its claws at the slightest provocation, its own Trainer included, and the Pokédex warns of a barbaric streak that sees it tear prey apart on a mere whim. That makes it a nightmare to raise, yet its glossy fur and graceful, queenly walk keep the admirers coming. It is a favourite of the wealthy, fans love to argue about the size of its jewel, and hunters prize that gem. It even grooms itself in its sleep, haughty expression intact.

No Persian is more famous than Giovanni's. The Team Rocket boss is rarely seen without his cat at his side – a nod, it seems, to the James Bond villain Blofeld and his white Persian cat – and it has followed him from the anime to Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Stadium, Let's Go and Pokémon GO. Team Rocket's Meowth, forever angling to be the boss's top cat, sees it as a rival.

Since Sun and Moon, Persian has also had a pampered regional cousin: Alolan Persian, a round-faced, blue-grey Dark-type spoiled by Alola's royal family of old. Galar's Meowth goes its own way and evolves into Perrserker instead – a barbaric bruiser that refined Persian can't stand, and the feeling is mutual.

How big is Persian?

Persian silhouette
Persian1 m (3′03″)
Trainer1.60 m (5′03″)

At 1.0 m (3′03″) Persian stands about as tall as a kitchen worktop, and at 32 kg (70.5 lb) it weighs roughly as much as a big Labrador; its Alolan cousin is a touch taller and heavier, at 1.1 m and 33 kg.

EvolutionEvolves from Alolan Meowth when it levels up with high friendship.

Alolan Persian is what happens when a cat is spoiled by royalty. Generations of pampering by Alola's former monarchy gave it a plush blue-grey coat, a blue forehead jewel – made of mostly the same material as the Kantonian cat's red one – and a big, round, jowly face with lazily half-closed eyes. Its coat is said to be softer than the finest velvet, and the rippling of its fur in the heat of battle is thought beautiful in its own right. Alolans see that face as a symbol of wealth and prosperity: the bigger and plumper, the more beautiful.

Underneath all that luxury is a Dark-type with an ego to match. Alolan Persian is clever, vain and looks down on everyone but itself, so it rarely bonds with its Trainer. It may put on a refined act, but it prefers dirty tricks – sucker punches, surprise attacks and trickery – and it toys with weakened prey rather than finishing it off, though that arrogance can leave it wide open to a counter-attack. Alola guards its cats jealously: they are very well looked after, and tourists must pass strict inspections before taking one home.

Alolan Persian’s Pokédex entries

Sun2016

Its round face and smooth coat—softer than the most high-class velvet—have made this a very popular Pokémon in Alola.

Moon2016

It looks down on everyone other than itself. Its preferred tactics are sucker punches and blindside attacks.

Ultra Sun2017

In contrast to its lovely face, it's so brutal that it tortures its weakened prey rather than finishing them off.

Ultra MoonGOLegends: Z-A2017

Its round face is a symbol of wealth. Persian that have bigger, plumper faces are considered more beautiful.

Let's Go, Pikachu!Let's Go, Eevee!2018

It has the classiest coat. The rippling of its fur in the heat of battle has a beauty all its own.

Sword2019

The round face of Alolan Persian is considered to be a symbol of prosperity in the Alola region, so these Pokémon are very well cared for.

Shield2019

This Pokémon is one tough opponent. Not only does it have formidable physical abilities, but it's also not above fighting dirty.

Alolan Persian shares the 440 total and the 115 Speed, but swaps 10 points of Attack for Sp. Atk (60 Attack, 75 Sp. Atk), and also gives 2 Speed EVs.

Pokémon GO

Persian has prowled Pokémon GO since launch day, 6 July 2016, evolving from Meowth for 50 Candy, and Alolan Persian followed on 21 June 2018, using the same Meowth Candy. Shiny Alolan Persian sparkled into view on 28 June 2019 for GO's third anniversary. Persian's biggest role, though, came with Team GO Rocket: Shadow Persian appeared on 5 November 2019, with shiny Persian following two days later, and boss Giovanni always has his Shadow Persian with him – it is the only Pokémon found in every one of his line-ups. Kantonian Persian has also taken turns as a three-star raid boss, and both forms are 3 km buddies. Persian fights with Scratch or Feint Attack and charged moves such as Foul Play, Power Gem, Play Rough and Payback, while the Alolan cat swaps Power Gem for Dark Pulse and gained Trailblaze in December 2023.

Pokédex entry

Listed as No. 085 in Pokopia's Pokédex, which borrows Yellow's line about the self-glowing gem and the walk of a proud queen.

Moves

Persian started out as a pure scrapper. In Red and Blue it scratched, growled and bit its way to Fury Swipes and a sharp Slash, scattering coins with Pay Day along the way, while its TM case held a surprising jolt of Thunderbolt and Thunder. Gold and Silver made Bite a Dark-type move and added Faint Attack, Ruby and Sapphire gave it a cheeky Fake Out, and Diamond and Pearl reinvented it completely with Switcheroo, Taunt, Power Gem, Nasty Plot, Assurance and Night Slash.

X and Y handed it Play Rough, and Sun and Moon brought in Alolan Persian, a round-faced Dark-type that adds Quash, Snarl, Parting Shot and a level-69 Dark Pulse. Sword and Shield streamlined the list, making Power Gem its evolution move and bringing Pay Day back at level 12, Scarlet and Violet opened a TM case of more than 50 moves, and Legends: Z-A shook things up again with Metal Claw, Hypnosis, Charm and Mimic. Through every change, Slash (or Night Slash for the Alolan cat) has kept its claws sharp, and since Diamond and Pearl, Nasty Plot has kept its schemes sharper still.

Signature moves

NormalPay Day

Meowth's famous coin trick. Persian learns it at level 17 in Red and Blue and at 12 in Let's Go, Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet, and starts with it in Legends: Z-A. From Diamond and Pearl to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, though, a Persian only knew it if it had learned it as a Meowth.

NormalSlash

The finishing claw of its very first move list, at level 51 in Red and Blue. It has stayed on the level-up list ever since: 53 in Gold and Silver, 37 from Diamond and Pearl to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, 27 in Let's Go, 42 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet and 22 in Legends: Z-A.

NormalFake Out

The surprise slap that only works on its first turn. It arrived at level 59 in Ruby and Sapphire (55 in FireRed and LeafGreen) and was a starting move in every game from Diamond and Pearl to Scarlet and Violet; Legends: Z-A turns it into TM141.

RockPower Gem

A flash from the jewel on its forehead. It was a level-32 move from Diamond and Pearl to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and since Sword and Shield it is the move Persian learns the moment it evolves (in Legends: Z-A only Alolan Persian does; Persian gets it from TM019).

DarkNasty Plot

Pure feline scheming that sharply boosts its Special Attack: level 44 from Diamond and Pearl to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, 37 in Let's Go, 48 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet and 27 in Legends: Z-A.

FairyPlay Rough

A Fairy-type scrap that joined as a starting move in X and Y and later became the grand finale of the list: level 47 in Let's Go, 54 in Sword, Shield, Scarlet and Violet and 48 in Legends: Z-A.

Night Slash & Dark Pulse (Alolan Persian)

Dark-type claws and a Dark-type aura for the Alolan cat. In Sun and Moon it learns Night Slash at 61 and finishes with Dark Pulse at 69, and from Sword and Shield onwards Night Slash takes Slash's place at 42 (22 in Legends: Z-A).

Complete learnsets

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow9 level-up · 18 TM/HM

Outside Japan, Persian is a Blue exclusive: only Blue has Meowth to evolve, so Red and Yellow players have to trade for one. It starts out with Scratch, Growl, Bite and Screech, and because Meowth evolves at level 28, the only moves Persian picks up after evolving are Fury Swipes at 37 and a slicing Slash at 51 (Bite, Pay Day and Screech sit lower down, at 12, 17 and 24). In this generation Bite is still a Normal-type move, and every attack's category follows its type, so all of its level-up attacks are physical. Its 18 TMs hide a surprising spark: Thunderbolt and Thunder, plus BubbleBeam, Water Gun, Skull Bash and Pay Day itself as TM16. Amnesia, Hypnosis, Defense Curl, Dream Eater, Headbutt and Roar, learned in Gold, Silver or Crystal, can be carried back through the Time Capsule.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (plus Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness)11 level-up · 28 TM/HM · 6 egg · 15 tutor

Ruby, Sapphire and Pokémon Colosseum have no Persian at all. Emerald and Pokémon XD let you evolve a Meowth, and FireRed and LeafGreen have Persian wild all over the Sevii Islands, from Kindle Road and Treasure Beach to Cape Brink, Bond Bridge, Five Isle Meadow, Water Path, Ruin Valley, Canyon Entrance and Sevault Canyon. Fake Out makes its debut as the last move on Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald's list at level 59; FireRed and LeafGreen teach everything a few levels sooner, with Fake Out at 55 and Swagger as an extra finale at 61. Its 28 TMs and HMs add Water Pulse, Taunt, Dig, Shock Wave, Aerial Ace, Torment and Snatch, and Assist and Psych Up join the egg moves. Emerald's tutors teach 14 of its 15 tutor moves, FireRed and LeafGreen five, and Pokémon XD eight, including Nightmare, which only XD offers. Two rarities come from Meowth: Sing, known by the Shadow Meowth snagged and purified in Pokémon XD, and Petal Dance, from a Meowth distributed at a Japanese event.

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum have Meowth to evolve, SoulSilver has wild Persian on Route 7 and in Cerulean Cave (HeartGold players must trade), and Pal Park welcomes it in its Field area. This is where Persian's moveset was reinvented: Switcheroo and Fake Out from the start, then Fury Swipes at 14, Taunt at 25, a glittering Power Gem at 32, Slash at 37, Nasty Plot at 44, Assurance, Captivate and Night Slash at 61, with Feint at 68 added in Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver. Pay Day drops out of its own list, so a Persian only knows it if it learned it as a Meowth. The 42 TMs and HMs bring Dark Pulse, U-turn, Shadow Claw, Payback, Embargo and Giga Impact; the 11 egg moves now include Flail, Last Resort, Odor Sleuth and Punishment (Tail Whip only in HeartGold and SoulSilver); and Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver's tutors teach Gunk Shot, Knock Off, Seed Bomb and more, with Headbutt in HeartGold and SoulSilver only. Sing and Petal Dance from the Generation III Meowth can be brought along.

Black and White have no Persian, but Black 2 and White 2 let you evolve a Meowth. The list carries on from Diamond and Pearl, with two tweaks: Black 2 and White 2 add Swift at level 28, and Feint, now a 30-power jab, arrives at 68 in all four games. Hone Claws, Round, Echoed Voice, Retaliate and Work Up join its 37 TMs and HMs. Foul Play, Snatch and Iron Tail are new egg moves (Iron Tail needs a father that learned it as an egg move), and Black 2 and White 2's tutors teach 15 moves, from Covet and Dark Pulse to Foul Play, Hyper Voice and Uproar. Pay Day still has to be learned as a Meowth, and a Meowth from the Dream World could pass on Secret Power.

X and Y have no Persian, while Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire hide one on a Mirage Island north of Route 124. Play Rough, the new Fairy-type tussle, becomes a starting move, Swift is now at level 28 in every game, Feint moves up to 65, and Power Gem (now 80 power) and Assurance (60) hit harder. Its 40 TMs add Sleep Talk, Dark Pulse and Confide, with Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only. The egg moves match Black and White's, though Charm is now a Fairy-type move, and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's tutors teach 15 moves, Shock Wave and Water Pulse among them. Pay Day still comes only from Meowth.

Alola has a Persian of its own. The original Normal-type Persian can only reach Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon through Pokémon Bank, while the Dark-type Alolan Persian comes from evolving an Alolan Meowth, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon also have it in SOS Battles at Malie Garden. Swift is now the move Persian learns the moment it evolves, and the rest of the list matches X and Y's, from Bite at 6 to Feint at 65. Its 35 TMs lose Dig, Cut, Flash, Hone Claws, Retaliate and Secret Power but keep Dark Pulse, U-turn and Shadow Claw. The 13 egg moves carry on, with many more fathers able to pass on Iron Tail, Sun and Moon have no tutors, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's tutors add Throat Chop to the old favourites. Twenty-six older moves, including Dig, Hone Claws, Sing and Petal Dance, can only be brought from earlier games.

Alolan PersianDark

Alolan Persian is a pure Dark-type, so Bite, Feint Attack, Assurance and Night Slash all gain the same-type bonus. Its list matches the Kantonian one with two additions: Quash as a starting move and a Dark Pulse finale at level 69. Its 37 TMs add Quash and Snarl. Its egg moves drop Iron Tail, Last Resort, Odor Sleuth and Tail Whip in favour of Covet, Flatter and a sly Parting Shot, and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's tutors teach it the same 16 moves. Pay Day has to be learned as an Alolan Meowth, and as a brand-new form it has no moves to bring from older games.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl16 level-up · 78 TM/HM · 15 egg · 2 tutor · + Alolan Persian

In Sword and Shield, Persian comes from evolving Meowth and Alolan Persian arrives by trade, and the Expansion Pass's Dynamax Adventures feature both forms. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl let you evolve Meowth too (the Alolan form cannot be obtained there), and neither form appears in Legends: Arceus. One level-up list serves all four games: Power Gem is now the move it learns on evolving, Pay Day returns at 12, and the list runs Bite 16, Taunt 20, Assurance 24, Fury Swipes 31, Screech 36, Slash 42, Nasty Plot 48 and Play Rough 54, leaving out Night Slash, Captivate, Feint Attack and Swift. Sword and Shield's 22 TMs and 21 TRs bring Charm, Icy Wind, Body Slam, Hyper Voice and Throat Chop, while Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl return to a Sinnoh-style list of 35 TMs. Sword and Shield keep six egg moves (Covet, Flail, Hypnosis, Last Resort, Spite and Tail Whip), Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl nine, and the Expansion Pass tutors teach Lash Out and Skitter Smack. Older moves such as Night Slash, Knock Off and Sing can be brought along, though some, including Assist, Captivate, Feint Attack and Return, cannot be used in Sword and Shield.

Paldea has wild Persian in the South Province (Area Four) and the West Province (Area Three), plus 4★ Tera Raid Battles. Alolan Persian can be brought in through Pokémon HOME, and The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero lets you evolve one from an Alolan Meowth. Both forms are also in Legends: Z-A. The level-up list is Sword and Shield's, except that Power Gem is now learned only on evolving. A huge case of 53 TMs adds Take Down, Fake Tears, Agility, Trailblaze, Metal Claw, False Swipe, Thunder Wave, Helping Hand, Pain Split, Double-Edge, Endeavor and Tera Blast, and the six egg moves are Covet, Flail, Hypnosis, Last Resort, Spite and Tail Whip. Alolan PersianDark

Alolan Persian keeps its Quash and Night Slash swaps. Its 55 TMs add Confuse Ray, Smack Down, Burning Jealousy and Curse but leave out False Swipe and Pain Split. Flatter and Parting Shot replace Last Resort and Tail Whip among its egg moves, and Parting Shot has no breeding partner at all: an Alolan Persian holding a Mirror Herb has to copy it from another Pokémon.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A (Version 2.0.0 onwards, incl. Mega Dimension)15 level-up · 45 TM/HM · + Alolan Persian

Both forms joined Legends: Z-A with the Version 2.0.0 update: they can be traded in, and the Mega Dimension expansion has Persian in 3★ Normal-type wild zones and Alolan Persian in 4★ Dark-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose. Moves here have no accuracy or PP: each lists the level at which it is learned, the level at which it becomes a Plus Move, its power and its cooldown. The list is all new: Pay Day, Tail Whip and Growl to start, then Bite at 10, Taunt at 13, Metal Claw at 15, Screech at 17, Slash at 22, Nasty Plot at 27, Hypnosis at 30, Take Down at 34, Charm at 37, Fake Tears at 40, Mimic at 44 and Play Rough at 48. For once Fury Swipes is missing, and Fake Out comes from TM141 instead. Its 45 TMs include Power Gem, Spikes, Heal Block, Metronome and a 150-power Skull Bash.

Persian in the anime

Debut EP015Battle Aboard the St. Anne · First major role EP070Go West Young Meowth · Its appearances on screen, and 4 other trainers who raised one.

Persian has spent most of its anime career on the most dangerous lap in Kanto. Giovanni's Persian slinked in beside the Team Rocket Boss in Battle Aboard the St. Anne (EP015) and has been purring at his side ever since – stroked through phone calls, sprawled across his office, whisked away by helicopter when Mewtwo blew Team Rocket HQ apart. It is also the reason Team Rocket's Meowth longs to be 'top cat': the pampered pet has the one job Meowth wants most, and it never lets him forget it.

Away from the Boss's office, Persian has played the street-gang leader who took in a young Meowth (EP070), a Thunderbolt-throwing opponent floored by Ash's Squirtle on Mandarin Island (EP099) and Vivica's Persian, which ran into an enraged Meowth at the Ever Grande Conference (AG126). Alola added a Dark-type twist with Pershie, Hau'oli City's resident bully, and Kahuna Nanu's outsized Alolan Persian, which pushed Ash's Lycanroc to the limit in a grand trial (SM077).

Giovanni's Persian
Giovanni
Boss of Team Rocket and Viridian Gym Leader (villain)
Persian

First seen: EP015Battle Aboard the St. Anne
Now: Still at Giovanni's side at Team Rocket HQ

Persian was the Boss's favourite long before Jessie, James and Meowth were a team. When a talking Meowth strolled into Giovanni's office and pledged himself to Team Rocket, Persian made no secret of its jealousy as the newcomer chattered away to the Boss between mouthfuls from a bowl. It needn't have worried: Meowth kept making a hash of things – he turned up singed after one botched coffee run – and was soon packed off to partner Jessie and James (HS12).

On screen, the Classy Cat made its entrance in Battle Aboard the St. Anne, at Giovanni's side when Team Rocket reported in – and Meowth had to watch it nuzzling up to the Boss in the spot he wanted for himself (EP015). From then on it became a fixture of every call to headquarters: curled on Giovanni's lap, lounging in his office, or being stroked while the Boss decided whether his agents deserved another chance.

It even played an accidental part in the Mewtwo saga. When Team Rocket presented Giovanni with Misty's Togepi, Persian bolted out of the room and left the door open behind it, and Togepi slipped straight out (EP063). Two episodes later Mewtwo burst free and blew Team Rocket HQ apart. Giovanni made sure Persian was safe before he escaped, and the pair flew off by helicopter while the Boss snapped at the trio to try doing their jobs for once (EP065).

Persian knows exactly how to wind Meowth up. It stuck its tongue out at him during one video call (AG079), and the memory of it pulling down an eyelid to taunt him spurred Meowth into helping Jessie at the Pacifidlog Town Contest – where his appeal saw him carve an ice sculpture of Giovanni and Persian with Fury Swipes, then turn the Persian into a Meowth (AG115). In Sinnoh a Mismagius conjured up Meowth's dearest wish: an illusory Giovanni tossing Persian aside so that Meowth could be his new pet (DP043).

Through Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh the routine hardly changed. Persian was with the Boss when Team Rocket got in touch in The Fortune Hunters (EP157) and Dues and Don'ts (EP231), was stroked after a call in A Ruin with a View (AG002), stood beside Giovanni as the trio reported back on their work in Hoenn (AG132), sat on his lap for a videophone call (DP002), was fed and petted while his computer analysed the Poké Ball of a freshly caught Yanma (DP080), and lazed in his office as Matori briefed the trio on a new mission (DP191).

Then, after hundreds of episodes of looking decorative, Persian finally fought. Joining Operation Tempest in Unova, it was sensed by Pikachu and scanned by Ash's Pokédex before Giovanni sent it in with Shadow Claw. It took Pikachu's Iron Tail in its stride and, when the Boss's infrared glasses picked out the invisible Meloetta, a Power Gem took down Ash and Pikachu and shocked Meloetta out of hiding. With Ash and Pikachu trapped in a shrinking cube, Meloetta gave itself up to save them (BW096).

Since then Persian has gone back to supervising. It was at the Boss's side when Team Rocket arrived in Kalos (XY003) and when they called about Team Flare (XY107). In Alola it looked on as an Alolan Meowth caught Giovanni's eye during a video call, much to Meowth's distress (SM062), and it was still being petted by the Boss in Journeys (JN136). Team Rocket's base in Vermilion City says it all: the poster of Giovanni on its wall has had Persian torn off.

Personality

Persian is the one Pokémon Giovanni treats with anything like respect. While the rest of his team are kept out of sight in cages, it is cuddled, fed and allowed to lounge about his office – and it has the air of a cat that knows it. It is devoted to the Boss, takes part in Team Rocket operations and, on the rare occasions it battles, is a genuinely powerful opponent. Towards Meowth it is more tease than rival: it was jealous when they first met, lost interest once it saw how hopeless he was, and now settles for sticking its tongue out at him.

Key battles

Nanu's Persian
Nanu
Island Kahuna of Ula'ula Island and police officer (Sun & Moon)
Persian (Alolan Form)

First seen: SM077Guiding an Awakening!

Nanu saves his Alolan Persian for last – and it is a big one, so much larger than most that Rotom likened it to a Totem Pokémon. It closed out Ash's grand trial, in which Ash could use only Lycanroc: Power Gem knocked Lycanroc down and a barrage of Dark Pulses sent it back into its red-eyed state, but once Lycanroc and Ash had made up after a heated moment, it dodged Night Slash and struck back with a super-effective Counter. Persian's Black Hole Eclipse and Lycanroc's Continental Crush cancelled each other out, and Accelerock finished the job, earning Ash his third grand trial win and a Lycanium Z (SM077). The Classy Cat later shared its Z-Power to help restore Necrozma (SM090), hit a rampaging Guzzlord with Dark Pulse alongside the other kahunas' Pokémon (SM140) and faced Hau's Decidueye in Hau's own grand trial (SM146).

Madame's Persian
Madame
recurring character (Sun & Moon), Hau'oli City
Persian (Alolan Form), nicknamed Pershie

First seen: SM007That's Why the Litten is a Scamp!

Pershie is the pampered pet of a well-to-do Madame and a menace to every small Pokémon on the streets of Hau'oli City. It first picked on the wild Litten that would later join Ash, stealing its food and cornering it on a cliff until Pikachu's Thunderbolt sent it running; when it came back for revenge, Litten's supercharged Ember chased it off with its tail on fire (SM007). Spotting a shrunken Ash, Lillie and Sophocles, it licked its lips and gave chase – only for Mallow's Tsareena to kick it into a wall and shave the fur off its back with Magical Leaf, leaving its owner horrified (SM083). It later lured a wild Eevee with fake friendliness and gave chase until Lana's Popplio whisked it away with Aqua Jet; Lana went on to catch the Eevee as Sandy (SM099).

Red's Persian

protagonist (Pokémon Origins)
Persian

First seen: PO04File 4: Charizard

Red's Persian is a surprise addition revealed during his Pokémon League run in Pokémon Origins. In his match against Blue it defeated Exeggutor before falling to Blastoise, and afterwards it helped Red battle and catch a wild Fearow. Its only known move is Fury Swipes.

Ash & Persian

Ash has never owned a Persian, but he has met some formidable ones. His Squirtle floored a Trainer's Persian with Skull Bash on Mandarin Island (EP099), Pikachu came off worst against Giovanni's Persian during Operation Tempest (BW096), and Lycanroc beat Kahuna Nanu's Alolan Persian to win Ash his third grand trial (SM077). In Alola he and Pikachu also had to see off the bullying Pershie more than once (SM007).

Anime trivia

  • Giovanni's Persian appeared on and off for fifteen years before it used a single move: Shadow Claw and Power Gem in Meloetta and the Undersea Temple! (BW096). The same episode was the first time its Poké Ball was shown and the first time a Persian was scanned by a Pokédex in the anime.
  • Rica Matsumoto – the Japanese voice of Ash – voices Giovanni's Persian, and her performance is kept in the English dub. Persian only got an English-language voice of its own when Kate Bristol voiced Pershie in SM007; she voiced Giovanni's Persian too in Acting True to Form! (SM062).
  • Meowth loses out to a Persian twice in the first 44 episodes: first as the Boss's favourite (EP015), then as the mascot for Cassandra's miracle medicine (EP044). In the original Japanese script, Lacy says she caught that Persian rather than found it.
  • The Norwegian dub of The Problem with Paras calls Persian 'perser', the name of the Persian cat breed, because the two are spelled the same in English.

“Persian, the Classy Cat Pokémon and the evolved form of Meowth. Persian can walk silently thanks to its nimble muscles. It pounces on its prey at lightning speed.”

Persian in the movies

1 film and 1 special featuring Persian.

For a Pokémon that spends so much of the anime at the side of Team Rocket's boss, Persian has had surprisingly little to do in the cinema. Its one real film role belongs to a wild Persian in Genesect and the Legend Awakened (2013): Ash tries to shield it from the Genesect Army, and at the fiery climax a Persian's Water Pulse frees the trapped Genesect.

Giovanni's own Persian gets one telling moment in the TV special Mewtwo Returns, growing restless when angry Bug Pokémon turn on Team Rocket.

A wild Persian living in Pokémon Hills

Pokémon Hills, the big park in the middle of New Tork City (think Central Park, with wild Pokémon), is home to a Persian that gets caught up in the Genesect Army's invasion. When the Red, Fire and Ice Genesect turn on it, Ash runs between them to stop the attack, and the Water Genesect leaps in and takes the full blast for him. At the fiery climax, with the other Genesect climbing out of a pit only to be hemmed in by flames, it's a Persian's Water Pulse that sets them free.

TV specials

  • Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns (2000)
In this TV special about Giovanni's hunt for Mewtwo, his Persian gets one telling moment. When angry Bug Pokémon attack Team Rocket, Persian grows restless. In the Japanese version Giovanni asks what's wrong with it, while the English dub has him simply hush it.

06Trading Card Game · every card

Persian in the Pokémon TCG

46 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.

Persian slunk into the card game in Jungle in 1999 as a sturdy Colorless Stage 1, and it hasn't been far from Team Rocket since. The Team Rocket set gave it a shady Dark Persian, Gym Challenge made it Giovanni's own holo sidekick with a Power that calls the boss to your hand, and EX Unseen Forces turned it into Rocket's Persian ex, a secret rare. It went Darkness type there years before Alola made that official. Over the years Persian has binned cards from hands, peeked at them, poisoned, paralysed and plotted. Since Sun & Moon the Alolan form has added Dark-type cards of its own, and both forms got GX cards in 2019.

The art has grown up with the game. Kagemaru Himeno's and Ken Sugimori's early cats gave way to Sugimori's Legends Awakened Persian posed against a stock-image background, Shigenori Negishi's Castelia City scene and 5ban Graphics' glossy GX and ex renders, then to modern showpieces such as Whisker's Shrouded Fable Illustration Rare. The Rocket link keeps coming back: the 151 Persian searches out Giovanni's Charisma, and Team Rocket's Persian ex helps itself to attacks from your opponent's deck. TCG Pocket adds seven more, including a Shiny Persian in Mega Rising.

Cards to know

  • Jungle 42/64 — Persian's first card, by Kagemaru Himeno. It's printed as Level 25, three levels before Meowth would really evolve.
  • Gym Challenge 8/132 (Giovanni's Persian) — The boss's own holo cat. Its Call the Boss Power goes straight to your deck and fetches Giovanni himself.
  • Wizards Black Star Promo 17 (Dark Persian) — Ken Sugimori's art puts Giovanni in the picture. It came tucked inside Nintendo Power, and some copies were misprinted with no HP.
  • EX Unseen Forces 116/115 (Rocket's Persian ex) — A secret-rare Mitsuhiro Arita box topper, Darkness type long before Alola. From the Bench it calls Dark and Rocket's Pokémon out of your deck.
  • Cosmic Eclipse 129/236 (Alolan Persian-GX) — Its Ability is called Smug Face, and it earns the name by ignoring attacks from TAG TEAMs and Ultra Beasts.
  • Destined Rivals 150/182 (Team Rocket's Persian ex) — Haughty Order rifles through the top of your opponent's deck and steals an attack to use, a properly villainous move.

Persian in manga, books & other media

From the earliest manga to story books and songs.

In print, Persian is a henchcat through and through. Its Pokémon Adventures debut has it scraping up a racket in the back streets of Celadon City for the villainous Super Nerd Miles, and it goes on to serve two Team Rocket executives: Sham, whose three Persian try to hold off Gold and Crystal, and Sird, whose Persian snatches control of an airship with Thief. Alolan Persian arrives in 2017 with Nanu, testing a festival stage in a battle with Olivia's Lycanroc.

Giovanni's own Persian gets a touching origin story in How I Became a Pokémon Card, where a boy, hinted to be the young Giovanni, nurses it back to health. In Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters, Green's Meowth even turns into Persian and back again as a stage trick.

On the bookshelf, Scholastic's early chapter books lean into Meowth's backstory: in Meowth, the Big Mouth a Persian runs the gang of street Meowth that takes him in, and in Talent Showdown Sally's Persian gives Ash's Squirtle a tough battle. In the picture book Detective Chikorita, a Persian is the star of a detective drama. Persian is also named in the English dub's Pokérap and Japan's Pokémon Ieru Kana?.

Manga

Pokémon Pocket MonstersGreen (a Meowth that turns into Persian and back) · PM019 'Aim to be the No. 1 Pokémon!!' / volume 3 · 1997Kosaku Anakubo's slapstick comedy gives Green a Meowth with a party trick. In the contest to find the No. 1 Pokémon, Green's act opens with Meowth tossing coins to the audience; then it turns into Persian and straight back into Meowth again, and the judges love it.
Pokémon AdventuresSuper Nerd Miles · PS047 'Purrrr-sian' / volume 4 · 1998Persian's first Pokémon Adventures role is as a sneaky sidekick. Super Nerd Miles, hired by Agatha to steal Red's Pikachu, Pika, ambushes Yellow in the dark streets of Celadon City. As Marowak's Bonemerang whirls in, Persian rakes its claws down the walls of the buildings, making such a din that Yellow can't hear the bone coming. The Japanese original names the racket as Screech.
'The Injured Persian' (PW17), the How I Became a Pokémon Card story behind Jungle's Persian card
How I Became a Pokémon CardGiovanni (as a boy) · PW17 'The Injured Persian' / volume 3Kagemaru Himeno's series spins a short story out of a card illustration, and this one is the tale behind Jungle's Persian card (42/64). A boy finds a badly hurt Persian and nurses it back to health; wary at first, it slowly comes to trust him. The boy, it's strongly hinted, is a young Giovanni, which makes this an origin story of sorts for his famous Persian. In the story it uses Screech and Scratch.
Pokémon AdventuresSham (three Persian) · PS164 'Slick Slowking' / volume 13 · 2002Sham, a Team Rocket executive in Johto and one of the children the Masked Man kidnapped and raised as his servants, has had her Persian since it was a Meowth, back when she was a little girl. She sends out three Persian to buy time while the rest of Team Rocket heads for the Indigo Plateau, and Gold and Crystal find themselves surrounded by Persian and Houndoom. It doesn't last: Gold's Polibo sends all three to sleep with Hypnosis.
Pokémon AdventuresSird · PS277 'A Beastly Cold Reception' / volume 23 · 2006Sird, one of Team Rocket's Three Beasts, keeps a Persian on her main team in the FireRed & LeafGreen chapters. It has a rough time against Lorelei, whose Jynx and Slowking send it flying along with Sird's Starmie (PS280). It makes up for it aboard Team Rocket's airship (PS298): when a jolt knocks the controller out of Red's hands, Persian snatches it with Thief, so Sird can switch off the ship's stadium mode before Carr crashes it.
Pokémon Adventures (Sun & Moon chapter)Nanu (Alolan Persian) · PASM03 'Pokémon Move Specialist Professor Kukui' / Sun & Moon volume 1 · 2017Alolan Persian makes its manga debut with Nanu. Nanu and Olivia test a stage for the coming Iki Town festival with a battle, his Persian against her Lycanroc, until Olivia's Z-Move gets Nanu riled and Hala steps in to stop it. Its known moves are Nasty Plot and Dark Pulse.

Persian trivia

Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Persian such a fan favourite.

What’s in a name?

Persian takes its name from the Persian cat – or possibly the Persian leopard, which would suit its sleek, big-cat build rather better. The Japanese name ペルシアン (Perushian) is simply the same word, and France, Spain, Italy and Brazil all kept it. Its Japanese category, Shamuneko, means 'Siamese cat', while English players know it as the Classy Cat Pokémon. Other languages have had more fun: the German Snobilikat blends 'snob', the Latin nobilis (noble) and Katze (cat), the Chinese 貓老大 (Māolǎodà) means 'cat boss' – fitting for the pet of Team Rocket's boss – and the old Cantonese name 高竇貓 means 'snobbish cat'. Korea's 페르시온 (Persion) may slip a lion into the name.

Design origins

Despite its name, Persian looks far less like a fluffy Persian cat than a sleek wild cat such as a leopard or cougar, with a dash of Siamese – hence its Japanese category. The jewel on its brow recalls the Carbuncle, a creature from Latin American folklore said to wear a gem on its head. Giovanni's ever-present Persian seems to borrow from the classic film villain who strokes a cat at his side, above all Ernst Stavro Blofeld and his white Persian cat in the James Bond films. Alolan Persian takes after pampered, selectively bred house cats of the kind kept by royalty, above all the British Shorthair with its big round head and built-in 'smile'. Its grey fur and blue jewel may be a pun on the breed's famous 'British Blue' colouring, and that oversized head a visual joke about being big-headed.

  6. Let's Go, Pikachu! players can be handed a Lv. 16 Persian in Vermilion City; in Let's Go, Eevee! the same man gives away an Arcanine instead.
  7. Its Chinese name, 貓老大 (Māolǎodà), means 'cat boss' – perfect for the favourite pet of Team Rocket's boss.
  8. In Danish it is Persianer, a word that actually means a karakul pelt, while the German name Snobilikat rolls snob, noble and cat into one.
  9. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Persian runs the Felicity Bank in Pokémon Square – known in Japanese simply as the Persian Bank.
  10. In Pokémon Conquest, Meowth evolves into Persian once its Speed stat reaches 96.
