01Overview
Meet Machamp
Everything you need to know about the Superpower Pokémon — the creature behind the number.
Machamp is the Superpower Pokémon, the final stage of the Machop line – and, like its counterpart Alakazam, it only arrives when a Machoke is traded (or, in Legends: Arceus, touched by a Linking Cord). It stands 1.6 metres tall and weighs a solid 130 kilograms, with bluish-grey skin, red eyes, big pale-yellow lips and three brown ridges across its brow. Then there are the arms: four of them, one pair where you'd expect and a second sprouting from the tops of its shoulders. Black markings like wrestling trunks and a gold power-save belt, styled after a championship belt, complete the look.
Its Pokédex entries read like a fight poster. One arm alone can move mountains, a single punch can knock a train flying, it hefts dump trucks with ease and it can fire off 1,000 punches in two seconds. It is said to have mastered every martial art in the world, and its four arms react faster than it can think, so it can attack and defend at the same time. Once all four arms take hold, the battle is all but over: the foe is twisted up in an intricate hold people call 'the Machamp special', then hurled over the horizon.
“Its four ruggedly developed arms can launch a flurry of 1,000 punches in just two seconds.”
Pokédex · Pokémon Red (Japan), Green (Japan), FireRed & X · 1996
All that muscle comes with a catch. Machamp's fingers are clumsy, so fiddly work leaves its arms in a hopeless tangle, and it tends to leap into action before it thinks. The belt matters, too – it keeps that enormous strength in check. Away from battle Machamp is a born labourer: Alola's Machamp Shove carries Trainers in its arms while shoving huge boulders aside. It is also a surprisingly good swimmer, its four arms powering it through the water as fast as any aquatic Pokémon.
Gigantamax Machamp takes it all to giant extremes. Towering past 25 metres, it gains almost limitless strength: its eyes blaze yellow, its fists turn a deep orange and three red clouds swirl around its waist. Gigantamax energy courses through its arms so that every punch lands like a bomb blast, and one is said to have lifted a large ship in trouble and carried it safely to port.
Machamp has been throwing its weight around since Red and Green, where it was the last and strongest Pokémon of Elite Four member Bruno – his signature partner ever since, right up to their sync pair in Pokémon Masters EX. Bea made a Gigantamax-capable Machamp her ace in Sword, and the four-armed brawler has stepped into the ring as a Power-style fighter in Pokkén Tournament, an All-Rounder in Pokémon UNITE's launch line-up and a Max Battle boss in Pokémon GO.
How big is Machamp?

At 1.6 m (5′03″) Machamp is no taller than many adults, but its 130 kg (286.6 lb) of muscle weighs about as much as two average grown-ups put together. Gigantamax Machamp shoots up past 25 m – roughly the height of an eight-storey building.

Spin-offs & cameos
Super Smash Bros.
Machamp isn't a fighter in Super Smash Bros., but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018) gave it a place on the Spirit Board. It is a two-star, Grab-type primary spirit with three support slots, and its spirit battle is a cheeky bit of casting: you face two giant Captain Falcons who mostly stick to neutral attacks, with their punches and elbow strikes powered up, on the Wrecking Crew stage – a pair of fist-first brawlers standing in for a Pokémon with fists to spare. Miss it on the Spirit Board and it can be bought from the Vault Shop for 1,000 gold.
Pokémon GO
Machamp has been flexing in Pokémon GO since launch day on 6 July 2016, evolving from Machoke for 100 Machop Candy – or for no Candy at all if that Machoke came to you in a trade, a neat nod to the main series. It was a three-star raid boss from 23 June to 4 November 2017, Shiny Machamp arrived with Battle Showdown 2019 on 5 March 2019 and Shadow Machamp followed on 10 June 2020. Machop Community Day on 16 January 2021 taught any Machoke evolved during the event the exclusive Charged Attack Payback, a move that has returned at later Community Days, and the Steeled Resolve event (21–26 January 2025) brought back the legacy Fast Attack Karate Chop in the same way. Dynamax Machamp became available on 3 December 2024, and Gigantamax Machamp stormed into six-star Max Battles on its own Max Battle Day, 25 May 2025 – Shiny from the start and armed with G-Max Chi Strike. A Machamp in a Modern Jacket costume joined the line-up in 2026, and whatever it wears, its Buddy distance is a short 3 km.
It never appears on the tables by itself – evolve a Machoke you've caught to fill in its Pokédex slot.
Machamp is one of Bruno's six Pokémon in the Gym Leader Castle, and its Stadium Pokédex entry describes a four-armed volley of uppercut, hook, straight and Karate Chop.
Bruno now leads with Machamp, which holds a Scope Lens in Round 1 and a Quick Claw in Round 2.
As on the original tables, evolving a Machoke is the only way to register it.
A Rare piece that turns up in Phobos Walker, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den.
Evolve a Machoke to get one – its friend area is Mt. Discipline, and it boasts, "Can you even see my flurry of punches?"
Browser #082, found in Krokka Tunnel. Once captured, its Crush field move (power 3) pulverises boulders in your path.
Waits on the Rock, Steel and Pit floors of Aegis Cave.
Browser #163, found in the Oil Field Hideout; once captured it lends a Fighting Poké Assist and smashes obstacles with Crush.
Still found in Aegis Cave in the expanded Explorers adventure.
Comes to play in the Cavern Zone, where its favourite attraction is Blaziken's Boulder Bash.
A Machoke evolves once its link reaches 60% and it knocks out an enemy warrior's Pokémon in a way that lets you recruit them. Its move is Cross Chop, and Isa, Masatoshi and Tadatsune can form a perfect link with it.
A reward from the Wonder Area's Go Big or Go Home!, and it also appears in Melodious Woodland's A Lively Concert.
Found on Mondays in Stage 2 of the Safari Jungle; its Power of Six skill boosts the damage when you match six Pokémon.
Its Eject skill removes one non-Support icon without fail, and it headlined the 'Machamp Appears' Great Challenge event.
A Power-style Battle Pokémon with 660 HP in every version of the game – arcade, Wii U and Pokkén Tournament DX. It grabs straight through blocks with Submission, pumps itself up with Bulk Up and unleashes the Burst Attack Dynamic Fury.
Joins once your Expedition Rank reaches Bronze at the Pokémon Nexus – and boasts, "I can throw tons of punches in a matter of seconds! Take that!"
In the game since launch, with Payback from Machop Community Day (2021) and Gigantamax Machamp Max Battles since 2025.
A melee bruiser with moves such as Cross Chop, Close Combat and Dynamic Punch – and here Machoke evolves into it at level 36, no trade needed.
A two-star Grab-type spirit, won by beating two giant Captain Falcons with souped-up punches and elbows on the Wrecking Crew stage.
Shows up in seven seas, from the Snorlax, Gengar and Aegislash Seas to the Lugia, Bulbasaur, Arceus and Charizard Seas.
Bruno & Machamp have been in the sync pair scout since launch – a Strike pair whose sync move is Trained-to-the-Max Dynamic Punch, with a 'Hoo Hah!' move named after Bruno's battle cry. They gained a 6★ EX upgrade on 25 February 2024.
Found on Mt. Faraway's first nine floors and deep inside the Buried Relic, as well as in Mystery Houses on Mt. Faraway.
Photodex #089, spotted by day at Blushing Beach and Maricopia Reef – fitting for a Pokémon whose entry praises its swimming.
A melee All-Rounder from the launch line-up: it starts as Machop, evolves at levels 5 and 9, and its Unite Move Barrage Blow is a four-armed combo with a huge final blow.
Pokopia Pokédex #158, reusing Moon's line about a Pokémon that can heft dump trucks but can't manage precision work.
Moves
Red and Blue's Machamp was a brawler with a short, punchy list: Karate Chop, Low Kick and Leer from the start, then Focus Energy, Seismic Toss and a level-52 Submission, with Earthquake, Rock Slide and even Fissure waiting in the TM case. Gold and Silver made Karate Chop a true Fighting move, added Vital Throw and the critical-hit-happy Cross Chop, and brought DynamicPunch as TM01; Ruby and Sapphire then made that wild, confusing punch the grand finale of its level-up list, a spot it held until Sword and Shield.
Later games kept piling on the muscle. Diamond and Pearl added Wake-Up Slap and egg moves such as Close Combat and Bullet Punch, Black and White gave it Wide Guard to shield its team, and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire slotted in Knock Off, Dual Chop and Bulk Up. Sword and Shield dropped Karate Chop and ended the list with a level-66 Double-Edge, Legends: Arceus taught it Mach Punch and Drain Punch, and although Machamp sits out Scarlet and Violet, Legends: Z-A hands it Brutal Swing, Detect and Heavy Slam along with 36 TMs.
Signature moves
Machamp's original opening chop. It was a level-1 move in Red and Blue, where it still counted as Normal-type, turned Fighting in Gold and Silver, and stayed in the level-up list all the way to Ultra Sun, Ultra Moon and Let's Go before Sword and Shield retired it.
The recoil-heavy takedown that closed Machamp's Red and Blue list at level 52 and was TM17 too. It kept a level-up slot until Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (and at 26 in Let's Go), then became an egg move in Sword and Shield.
The wrestler's throw that deals damage equal to Machamp's level. Learnt at 44 in Red and Blue, it is in every level-up list from there to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: 12 in Let's Go, 48 in Sword and Shield.
A crossed double chop with a high critical-hit ratio, new at level 43 in Gold and Silver. Every level-up list from then to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl has it except Let's Go, and Sword and Shield save it for level 60.
The 50%-accurate haymaker that confuses whatever it hits. TM01 in Gold and Silver, it became the grand finale of the level-up list in Ruby and Sapphire (59) and is still learnt at 54 in Sword, Shield and Legends: Z-A; the Pokémon EXPO Gym event Machamp knew it too.
The muscle-flexing boost to Attack and Defence. A TM since Ruby and Sapphire, it joined the level-up list at 43 in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and turns up at 25 in Legends: Arceus and 20 in Legends: Z-A.
An all-out flurry of blows that drops Machamp's own guard. An egg move since Diamond and Pearl, a TR in Sword and Shield, the level-43 finale in Legends: Arceus and a TM in Legends: Z-A.

Generation I · Red, Green, Blue & Yellow8 level-up · 24 TM/HM
Machamp is never found in the wild in Red, Green, Blue or Yellow: a Machoke evolves into it when traded, and in Yellow an in-game trade in the Underground Path between Routes 5 and 6 swaps a Cubone for a Machoke that evolves on arrival. One level list covers all four games. Machamp starts with Karate Chop, Low Kick and Leer, picks Low Kick and Leer up again at 20 and 25, then learns Focus Energy at 36, Seismic Toss at 44 and Submission at 52. Karate Chop is still a Normal-type move here, and in Generations I to III a move's type decides whether it is physical or special. 'Transfer' lists moves from Gold, Silver and Crystal that a Machamp can bring back through the Time Capsule.

Generation III · Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed & LeafGreen (tutor data also covers XD)13 level-up · 24 TM/HM · 7 egg · 19 tutor
Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen: trade a Machoke to evolve it. Machamp can't be caught in Pokémon Colosseum or XD: Gale of Darkness, but one traded in can use XD's tutors. The levels are the same in all five games: Revenge arrives at 25, Submission now comes at 41 and Cross Chop at 46, and DynamicPunch now closes the list at 59. Focus Punch (TM01), Bulk Up (TM08), Brick Break, Rock Tomb and Flamethrower join the TM case. Counter and SmellingSalt are new egg moves, and Rock Slide can only be chain-bred through Spinda. Tutor games are FireRed/LeafGreen, Emerald and XD: Emerald teaches all 19 moves on the list, including DynamicPunch and the elemental punches.

Generation IV · Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver14 level-up · 38 TM/HM · 13 egg · 11 tutor
Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver: trade a Machoke to evolve it. From this generation every move has its own physical or special category, so Focus Blast (TM52) and the tutor move Vacuum Wave give Machamp rare special Fighting attacks. Wake-Up Slap joins the level list at 36 and DynamicPunch moves up to 51. New TMs include Stone Edge, Poison Jab, Payback and Giga Impact, plus the field move Rock Climb (HM08). Bullet Punch, Close Combat and the elemental punches can now be bred in, with Power Trick a HeartGold and SoulSilver extra. Platinum's tutors teach Superpower, Vacuum Wave, Helping Hand and the elemental punches, and HeartGold and SoulSilver add Headbutt, Low Kick and Role Play. 'Transfer' lists Generation III tutor moves.

Generation V · Black, White, Black 2 & White 217 level-up · 39 TM/HM · 14 egg · 11 tutor
White lets you evolve a Machoke into Machamp; in Black, Black 2 and White 2 it has to be traded in from another game. The levels are the same in all four games. The list now opens with Wide Guard, which shields Machamp's side from moves that hit several Pokémon at once, Low Sweep arrives at 13, and Scary Face (51) and DynamicPunch (55) close it. TMs add Smack Down, Low Sweep, Incinerate, Retaliate, Bulldoze and Work Up. Heavy Slam, Knock Off and Tickle are new egg moves. Black 2 and White 2's tutors teach 11 moves, among them Dual Chop, Knock Off and Superpower, while in Black and White Helping Hand comes from a Machop met in the Dream World. 'Transfer' lists moves from Generations III and IV.

Generation VI · X, Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire20 level-up · 43 TM/HM · 15 egg · 11 tutor · 1 event
X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: trade a Machoke to evolve it. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire speed the list up and slot in Knock Off (21), Dual Chop (33) and Bulk Up (43), so there are two level columns: Dynamic Punch, for example, is learnt at 55 in X and Y but at 57 in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Move names lose their old squashed spellings, so DynamicPunch becomes Dynamic Punch and ThunderPunch Thunder Punch. Power-Up Punch arrives as TM98; TM94 is Rock Smash in X and Y but Secret Power in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Rock Smash becomes HM06. Quick Guard is a new egg move, and all 11 tutor moves, Focus Punch included, are Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire only. An event Machamp from the Pokémon EXPO Gym came knowing Dynamic Punch.

Generation VII · Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon22 level-up · 36 TM/HM · 15 egg · 13 tutor · 2 event
Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: trade a Machoke to evolve it. One level list covers all four games and follows Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, with one addition: Strength is listed among the level-1 moves and is also learnt the moment Machamp evolves. Dig is no longer a TM. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon's tutors teach 13 moves, adding Stomping Tantrum and Throat Chop, and Pangoro joins the Bullet Punch parents. Saori Yoshida's Machamp, a Nintendo Network distribution in Japan, came with Double-Edge and Quick Guard. The transfer list now reaches back to Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal, whose Virtual Console releases can send Pokémon forward.

Generation VIII · Sword & Shield (incl. Expansion Pass), Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl16 level-up · 91 TM/HM · 18 egg · 1 tutor
Sword and Shield: Machamp wanders the Wild Area near the Giant's Mirror and turns up in Max Raid Battles at the Dusty Bowl, Lake Miloch, the Rolling Fields and the Stony Wilderness, and The Crown Tundra adds more raid dens; Sword's raids can also hold Gigantamax Machamp, which keeps the same moves but turns its Fighting-type attacks into G-Max Chi Strike. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: trade a Machoke to evolve it. One level-up list serves both pairs: Revenge is now a starting move, Strength comes at 31, Seismic Toss at 48, Dynamic Punch at 54 and Cross Chop at 60, and Double-Edge is the new level-66 finale. TMs, TRs and egg moves are marked SwSh or BDSP; TRs are Sword and Shield's single-use Technical Records, among them Close Combat, Reversal, Darkest Lariat and High Horsepower. Coaching comes from the Expansion Pass move tutor. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Submission has to be chain-bred through the Chimchar line, and Tickle can only come from a Machop-line parent that already knows it. The transfer list gathers older moves that only arrive with a Machamp moved up from an earlier generation; several, such as Return, Hidden Power and Secret Power, can't be used in Sword and Shield.

Machamp in the anime
Debut EP029The Punchy Pokémon · First major role EP063The Battle of the Badge · Its appearances on screen, and 7 other trainers who raised one.
Machamp has never travelled with Ash, yet the four-armed Superpower Pokémon turns up whenever the anime needs serious muscle. It made its debut among the fighters of the P1 Grand Prix, and its first real role came on loan from Giovanni, pummelling Ash's Squirtle with Karate Chop while Team Rocket ran the Viridian Gym. Since then it has lost a sumo semi-final to Snorlax's belly, hunted a runaway Psyduck for its Trainer and returned from the mountains to challenge Hawlucha for the title of Forest Champion.
Galar gave it a starring role. Bea's Machamp, the ace of the Stow-on-Side Gym Leader, Gigantamaxed against Ash's Mega Lucario in the World Coronation Series and threw G-Max Chi Strike before Steel Beam brought it down. Away from the battlefield, its strength has made it a favourite with bridge builders, police clean-up crews and even a television crew, where one Machamp films a quiz show with a camera in each arm.
Other trainers’ Machamp

First seen: JN034Solitary and Menacing!
Korrina calls Machamp Bea's true ace, and it lives up to the billing in her World Coronation Series battle with Ash: its Bullet Punch twice overpowers Lucario's Force Palm, and it holds Lucario in its grip under a hail of blows until Lucario refuses Ash's panicked attempt to Mega Evolve and headbutts its way free (JN085). When the battle resumes, Lucario breaks free of its Strength, and once Sirfetch'd catches it with Fury Cutter, Bea recalls it, only to bring it back later and Gigantamax it against Mega Lucario. Max Steelspike, Max Strike and G-Max Chi Strike all follow, but an Aura Sphere to the face shrinks Machamp back to normal size, and Lucario's Force Palm turns into Steel Beam to finish it and win Ash the match (JN086). Later it trains with Bea and Hop in the Wild Area, sparring with Hop's Wooloo (JN136).

First seen: EP063The Battle of the Badge
Giovanni puts Jessie, James and Meowth in charge of the Viridian Gym and lends them Machamp, Kingler and Rhydon to see off challengers. Jessie sets Machamp on Ash's Squirtle, and its Karate Chops land again and again, painfully for Ash too, because Team Rocket's rigged battle box makes him feel every blow his Pokémon takes. Ash recalls Squirtle, and later a Thunderbolt from Pikachu aimed at all three borrowed Pokémon sends them fleeing. Ash walks away with the Earth Badge, his eighth (EP063).

In The Sinnoh Iceberg Race!, Meowth's golden charm sets the Rocket Prize Master going, and a turn of the crank produces a Machamp for Jessie alongside a Beartic. Jessie sends Machamp out to stop Ash and Goh wrecking Team Rocket's plan to steal Pokémon from the Pokémon Iceberg Race, but Pikachu's Thunderbolt blasts the trio off, borrowed Pokémon and all (JN008). Prize Master Pokémon are only ever on temporary loan to Team Rocket.

Gavin from Ganga Town pairs Machamp with Marowak against Morrison's Growlithe and Gligar in a Double Battle qualifier at the Ever Grande Conference. Machamp meets Gligar's Guillotine with Karate Chop and lands Dynamic Punch and Cross Chop, but a string of Steel Wings wears it down and a final Guillotine knocks it out. Marowak beats Growlithe, yet Gligar takes the one-on-one with Iron Tail and Morrison moves on (AG127).

Emily keeps a Superpower trio of Machop, Machoke and Machamp, and sends them after her runaway Psyduck. Ash's Phanpy blocks Machamp's attack with Defense Curl and bowls it over with Rollout, and Pikachu's Thunderbolt chases the trio off. They make up for it when Team Rocket try to fly off with Psyduck and Phanpy: Machamp and Machoke stop the balloon, and their Cross Chops knock Jessie and James back aboard just before it explodes (AG140).

Ash & Machamp
Ash has never caught a Machamp, but he has had to get past plenty of them. A Machamp lent to Team Rocket pummelled his Squirtle with Karate Chop at the Viridian Gym (EP063), and his Snorlax bounced another out of the Sumo Conference semi-finals (EP194). Years later his Mega Lucario brought down Bea's Gigantamax Machamp in the World Coronation Series (JN086).
Gigantamax Machamp on screen
Machamp has no Mega Evolution. Gigantamax Machamp made its anime debut as Bea's ace in the World Coronation Series, trading Max Moves with Ash's Mega Lucario in a showdown of Mega Evolution against Gigantamax.
- JN086A Battle of Mega Versus Max!Bea Gigantamaxes Machamp with her Dynamax Band to face Ash's Mega Lucario. Its Max Steelspike cancels out Aura Sphere, Max Strike knocks Lucario back and G-Max Chi Strike hits with fists of orange energy, but Lucario endures, runs up Machamp's arm and lands an Aura Sphere on its face. Machamp shrinks back to normal size and falls to Steel Beam soon after.

Anime trivia
- Machamp's anime Pokédex entry comes from Goh's Rotom Phone, when he scans Bea's Machamp in Battle Three With Bea! (JN085).
- Bea's lines before she Gigantamaxes Machamp and calls for G-Max Chi Strike in JN086 are taken straight from her first battle with the player in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
- In the original release of Mewtwo Strikes Back, Raymond's Machamp comes out of its Poké Ball twice. The slip was fixed in the digitally remastered version.
- In Ring Masters (EP194), the semi-finalist Machamp is drawn with a dark-grey jaw instead of its cream one, and with fangs.
- In From Brags to Riches (AG127), the Japanese commentator calls the Guillotine that knocks out Gavin's Machamp a critical hit, which is impossible for a one-hit knockout move. The English dub corrected the line.
- In Japan, Machamp starred in the Professor Oak's Pokémon Lecture shown after EP202, complete with a senryū urging Kairiky, as it is known in Japanese, to show off its strength.
- The Japanese version of A Battle of Mega Versus Max! (JN086) also features Machamp in its 'Get Inspired! Let's Solve a Pokémon Riddle!!' segment.
“Machamp, the Superpower Pokémon. A Fighting type. Machamp's four arms move reflexively, which makes it very fast and allows it to deliver rapid-fire punches.”

Machamp in the movies
4 films featuring Machamp.
Machamp's film career is more cameo than starring role, but it has been there since the very beginning. In Mewtwo Strikes Back the Trainer Raymond sends a Machamp against Ash's Squirtle, and a single Bubble Beam sweeps it aside; the 2019 CGI remake replays the moment almost shot for shot. In The Power of Us a Machamp becomes one more hanger-on in Harriet's ever-growing Pokémon entourage. One memorable big-screen scene, though, belongs to an impostor: in Detective Pikachu the shape-shifting Ditto Ms. Norman turns into a four-armed Machamp and pummels Tim halfway out of a window.

Raymond's Machamp
Machamp was in the very first Pokémon film, even if its stay was short. Ash and his friends are sitting down to lunch when the Trainer Raymond marches up and demands a battle. His Machamp squares up to Ash's Squirtle and is quickly swept aside by a Bubble Beam. In the original cut Raymond's Machamp comes out of its Poké Ball twice, a slip that was tidied up in the remastered version.

A Machamp that starts following Harriet
On the second day of Fula City's Wind Festival, Toren promises Harriet that he'll find a fix for her problem once his presentation is done, and right on cue a Machamp starts following her. It's one more recruit to an entourage that keeps on growing: back at the lab a Smoochum tags along too, and the next morning Harriet wakes up on her porch surrounded by a Heracross and a Tyrogue.

Ms. Norman, a shape-shifting Ditto, in Machamp form; other Machamp around Ryme City
Machamp's live-action big moment comes with a twist. In the showdown in Howard's office, Ms. Norman is unmasked as a Ditto and runs through a string of disguises: a Loudred, then Lucy, then a four-armed Machamp that pummels Tim until he's left hanging out of the office window. She has to switch to a Cubone to make him lose his grip.

Raymond's Machamp
The CGI remake keeps Machamp's cameo. Raymond challenges Ash at the start of the film and once again Squirtle's Bubble Beam overwhelms his Machamp, this time in glossy 3D.

Machamp in the Pokémon TCG
59 cards since 1999, oldest first. Tap any card to see it full size.
Machamp has been throwing its weight around the card game from the very start. It debuted in Japan's first Expansion Pack in October 1996 and reached English players in 1999 as the holo of the 2-Player Starter Set, which is why every Base Set Machamp carries a 1st Edition stamp. Japan even turned trade evolution into a postal campaign: send in a Machoke card, get a holo Machamp back. Since then it has fought for almost everyone, from Team Rocket, Giovanni and Bruno to Neo Destiny's Light Pokémon and Maylene, whose Machamp GL brought the Veilstone Gym along. Stormfront's Take Out made Machamp decks a staple from 2008 to 2011, especially against Basic Pokémon SP, and the modern era added Pokémon-EX, BREAK, GX, a TAG TEAM with Marshadow, V and a Gigantamax VMAX with G-Max Chi Strike. TCG Pocket added a Machamp ex.
Its look has bulked up just as much. Ken Sugimori's clean official pictures set the tone on Base Set and Giovanni's Machamp, while Mitsuhiro Arita, Shin-ichi Yoshida, Naoyo Kimura, Hajime Kusajima and Kouki Saitou each gave it their own take in the years that followed. Later the backgrounds became real places, from Marshal's room in the Unova League to the Fighting Stadium shared by a whole Furious Fists scene and Stow-on-Side on the Machamp V Alternate Art, while 5ban Graphics, PLANETA and N-DESIGN brought computer-rendered muscle and Detective Pikachu turned a still from the film into a card. A Machamp statue modelled on the Discobolus even sneaks into the 2019 Champions Festival art, and TCG Pocket keeps the story going with pictures by Hitoshi Ariga, Kouki Saitou, Masakazu Fukuda, Naoki Saito and Shin Nagasawa.

- Detective Pikachu 13/18 — The live-action film's CGI Machamp, with an attack called Directing Traffic.
- Astral Radiance 073/189 — Gigantamax Machamp brings G-Max Chi Strike to the card game: 330 HP and 240 damage.

Machamp in manga, books & other media
From the earliest manga to story books and songs.
Machamp gets far more to do on paper than on the big screen. Its manga debut came in Kosaku Anakubo's Pocket Monsters, where a Machoke leading a robbery loses its temper, evolves on the spot and is caught by Red. Pokémon Adventures has handed Machamp to Blue, Bruno, Chuck and Bea, plus a whole Team Galactic army that stacks itself into a pyramid to grab Azelf. Pokémon Zensho gave Giovanni a childhood Machamp whose death left him bitter, and Magical Pokémon Journey turned one into a shy romantic pining for a Vaporeon. In 2015 it even got its own web manga as a police officer. On the bookshelf it battles Ash at the Viridian Gym in Team Rocket Blasts Off! and fights a Hitmonchan for a Clefable's heart in Raichu Shows Off. Elsewhere it drums the beat of the Pokémon Ondo, catches a falling car in Ed Sheeran's Celestial video, and in 2017 became the face of 'MaChamps', an underwear range that existed only on April Fools' Day.

Machamp trivia
Name origins, design secrets and the facts that make Machamp such a fan favourite.
What’s in a name?
Machamp flexes two words at once: macho – Spanish and Portuguese for 'male', and a byword for swaggering manliness – and champ, the title its championship-style belt seems to claim. Its Japanese name, Kairiky, comes from 怪力 kairiki, 'superhuman strength', which doubles as its Japanese category and sounds like the Japanese name of the move Strength. Translators kept the muscle theme going: French Mackogneur blends macho with cogneur ('bruiser'), German Machomei may come from the Greek máchomai ('I fight') or from Macho plus Meister ('master'), and Korean Goeryeokmon tacks 'monster' onto goeryeok, the same 'superhuman strength'. In Chinese it is simply 怪力 – 'monstrous strength' – the very same name as the move Strength.
Design origins
Machamp is a bodybuilder or professional wrestler come to life – all bulging muscle, black markings like wrestling trunks and a gold power-save belt modelled on a championship belt. Its extra pair of arms and bluish skin may draw on the Hindu gods Shiva or Vishnu, while its muscular build, head crests and big lips may tip a hat to the wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Gigantamax Machamp borrows from the giants of the Ultra series, particularly in its eyes and head ornaments: those heroes defend the universe but can only stay enormous for a limited time, much like a Dynamaxed Pokémon. Early in the development of Red and Green, its working English name was 'Judoh', a twist on judo.

Did you know?
- Machamp's Japanese name, Kairiky, sounds like the Japanese name of the move Strength – and in Mandarin and Cantonese, Machamp and Strength share exactly the same name, 怪力.
- While Red and Green were in development, Machamp's English name was 'Judoh' – a play on judo.
- Machamp and Alakazam mirror each other: trade-evolved final stages of three-stage lines, with a 3:1 male-to-female ratio, the Human-Like Egg Group and Medium Slow growth – one an Attack powerhouse, the other a Sp. Atk specialist.
- Their lines sit side by side in the National Pokédex, a girl in Oreburgh City trades her Abra for a Machop – and while Alakazam got a Mega Evolution, Machamp got a Gigantamax form.
- Machamp and Gengar make a neat Galar double act: both evolve by trade, both can Gigantamax and both are weak to Psychic moves – and Bea uses Machamp in Sword where Allister uses Gengar in Shield.
- Unova's Conkeldurr is Machamp's near twin: pure Fighting type, Guts, a 3:1 gender ratio, the Human-Like Egg Group, a 505 base stat total, 227 base experience, 3 Attack EVs – and a trade-only final stage.
- Machamp and Conkeldurr are also familiar faces on construction sites in their home regions.
- Bruno's strongest Pokémon is always his signature Machamp – the last Pokémon he sends out in every core-series Elite Four battle, from Red and Green to Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!
- In Pokémon Yellow, the Machoke you get for a Cubone in the Underground Path evolves into Machamp the moment the trade finishes.
- Trade a Machamp from Red or Blue into Gold or Silver and it arrives holding a Bitter Berry.
- In the Pokéathlon, Machamp boasts a perfect five-star Power rating – but just one star of Speed, two at most.
- Pokkén Tournament's Burst Attack Dynamic Fury echoes Dynamic Punch, a Machamp favourite because No Guard lets it land the normally inaccurate move every time.
- One of Machamp's Pokkén Tournament entrance animations has it tossing what look like two Iron Balls into the air.
- That card's Pokémon Power, Strikes Back, is called 'Counterattack' in Japanese – the same name as a skill Pokémon Shuffle introduced years later.
- G-Max Chi Strike raises the critical-hit ratio of Machamp and its allies, and the boost stacks with Focus Energy and with repeated use.
