Diamond & Pearl booster packDiamond & Pearl is the base set of a brand-new era, released on May 23rd, 2007 and known in Japan as Space-Time Creation. It’s a genuine fresh start: the first set of the Diamond & Pearl Series, the debut of Generation IV and the Sinnoh region in the card game, and a top-to-bottom redesign under the tagline “New Pokémon, new adventures!”

Almost everything is new. The card frames were completely redrawn, the sprawling EX era’s Pokémon-ex were retired, and this 130-card set introduced the mechanic that would define the next few years: Pokémon LV.X. The chase is led by the Sinnoh starters’ final forms as Level-Up cards — Empoleon LV.X, Infernape LV.X and Torterra LV.X.

Beneath the headliners sits a strong cast of new Sinnoh favourites — Lucario, Luxray, Garchomp’s cousins and the space legends Dialga and Palkia — plus a full slate of freshly designed Trainers like Professor Rowan and Rival.

Three theme decks launched the era: Terra Firma, Inferno Zone and Royal Frost. After four years of the EX era, Diamond & Pearl is the clean slate that reset the game — and the mechanic below is the reason.

New Pokémon, new adventures!

Discover the Sinnoh region and power up your team with the all-new Pokémon LV.X.

— Original Pokémon USA promotional copy, 2007

Level Up: Pokémon LV.X Arrives

Every era needs a signature idea, and Diamond & Pearl launched with a big one: Pokémon LV.X. Where the previous era ended with Pokémon-ex in EX Power Keepers, this set swept them away and introduced a completely different way to power up. A LV.X card isn’t an Evolution — it’s a “Level-Up” card you place directly on top of a Pokémon already in play.

The beauty of it was that nothing was lost. Level up your Pokémon and it keeps all its Energy, damage and attachments — it just gains more HP and a powerful new attack or Poké-Power, and can still use everything from its lower level. It made your best Pokémon suddenly, dramatically better mid-battle, without the risk of starting over. Crucially, LV.X could only be played on a Pokémon already on your side of the field, so you had to earn the upgrade.

The set debuts the mechanic on the three Sinnoh starters’ final forms: Empoleon LV.X, whose Supreme Command swipes cards from your opponent’s hand; Infernape LV.X, digging through your deck for what you need; and Torterra LV.X, dragging your opponent’s Bench into the open when you’re ahead. Level X would go on to headline the entire Diamond & Pearl era — and it all starts here.

Trivia

  • Diamond & Pearl launched a brand-new era: the first Generation IV / Sinnoh set in the TCG, with completely redesigned card frames.
  • It introduced Pokémon LV.X — “Level-Up” cards you place on a Pokémon already in play to power it up — debuting on the three Sinnoh starters, Empoleon, Infernape and Torterra.
  • The set retired Pokémon-ex, closing the door on the mechanic that had defined the previous era (which ended with EX Power Keepers).
  • A quiet rules change: Poison-type Pokémon moved from the Grass type to the Psychic type in the card game.
  • Its Japanese release, Space-Time Creation, came as two decks — the Diamond Collection and the Pearl Collection.
  • Three theme decks launched the era: Terra Firma, Inferno Zone and Royal Frost.
